The correct recovery method depends on what “uninstalled” actually did. A built-in Windows app may still have its package on the computer but be unregistered for your account, or it may be installed and merely broken. Only a missing or damaged package needs to be obtained again from Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager (winget), and not every inbox app is available through either channel.
Use this order: identify the app and Windows version, try Repair if the app is present, use Reset only when losing that app’s data is acceptable, check whether the package still exists, re-register it for the signed-in user when necessary, and obtain a new package only if the original is absent or corrupted.
What “uninstalled” can mean in Windows
Windows separates an app package from its registration for a particular user. The package is the installed application files; registration creates the entries that let a user launch the app. Removing registration for one account does not necessarily remove the package from the device.
That distinction determines the safest fix:

Windows 10 and Windows 11 can use different Settings labels, and the list of built-in apps changes by edition, release, and device manufacturer. Do not assume that a command for one app can restore every other app.

Before changing anything
Identify the exact app
Write down the app’s display name as it appears in the Start menu or Settings. Similar names can refer to different packages—for example, a calculator, a media player, and a system component may each have a separate package family name. The package family name, package full name, and manifest path are not interchangeable.
Check the Windows account you are repairing
If the app is missing only from your account, a current-user registration is appropriate. If several accounts cannot launch it, inspect the package for all users before attempting a reinstall. Have an administrator account available for inspection, but do not use an elevated PowerShell window for the final registration intended for your own account.
Protect data that matters
Repair is the least destructive option. Reset permanently removes the app’s local preferences, cached content, and sign-in details. If the app stores unsynchronized work locally, copy or export it before resetting or reinstalling.
Try Repair when the app is still installed
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on many Windows 10 builds.
- Find the affected app, open its three-dot or advanced-options menu, and select Advanced options if that link is provided.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Launch the app from Start and test the function that previously failed.
Repair attempts to reload the MSIX app while retaining its data. It is useful when the package is present and the failure is caused by damaged runtime state, registration details, or app files that Windows can refresh. Some system components do not expose Repair; in that case, continue to the package check rather than assuming the app has been removed.
Use Reset only when deleting app data is acceptable
Reset returns an app to an initial configuration. Microsoft’s MSIX guidance distinguishes it from Repair: Reset deletes the app’s data and installs the app fresh. Expect to sign in again and recreate preferences after the operation.
- Open the app’s Advanced options page using the Settings path above.
- Read the warning, then choose Reset.
- After the reset completes, open the app and complete any first-run setup.
PowerShell also provides the Reset-AppxPackage cmdlet. Use it only after identifying the intended package; a broad reset can affect more than the app you meant to repair. A targeted example is:
Get-AppxPackage *calculator* | Reset-AppxPackageReplace the search term with a distinctive part of the target app’s package name. If the command returns no package, Reset cannot obtain a missing application; proceed to the registration or acquisition steps instead.

Check whether the package still exists
Inspect the signed-in user first
Open Windows PowerShell or PowerShell and run a targeted query, changing the search term to the app you need:
Get-AppxPackage *calculator*A result indicates that Windows can see a package registered for the current user. Note the values for Name, PackageFullName, PackageFamilyName, InstallLocation, and Status. If the package is listed, the problem may be registration or app state rather than a missing installation.
Inspect packages installed for any user
To determine whether another account or the device still has the package, open PowerShell as administrator and run:
Get-AppxPackage *calculator* -AllUsersThe elevated window is appropriate for this all-user inventory. It does not mean you should perform the subsequent current-user registration there. If the package appears only in the all-user result, it is a strong indication that the files remain on the device while your account lacks a usable registration.

If neither query finds the app, or the package status shows corruption and the install location is unusable, treat it as missing and use the acquisition route later in this guide.
Re-register an existing package for your account
Microsoft documents two registration forms: registration by package family name and registration by the package manifest. Both require the actual package identity from your computer. Do not copy the Calculator family name or a sample manifest path for a different app.
Register by package family name
First obtain the exact family name from the package information. Then close the elevated window, open a normal, non-elevated PowerShell window for the user who needs the app, and run a command in this form:

Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsCalculator_8wekyb3d8bbweThe family name in this example is illustrative. Substitute the target app’s own PackageFamilyName. Microsoft warns that an elevated prompt can register the app to the administrator account instead of the signed-in user, so elevation is a common reason an apparently successful repair does not change what the intended user sees.

Register from the package manifest
If family-name registration is unavailable or fails, use the manifest inside the package’s actual installation directory. Obtain the location from Get-AppxPackage or the all-user inventory, then verify that an AppxManifest.xml file exists in that directory. In a normal PowerShell window, run:
Add-AppxPackage -Register "C:WindowsApps<the-package-install-location>AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentModeThe path shown is a command pattern, not a universal Windows path. Use the full InstallLocation reported for your package and its current version. Package folders commonly include version, architecture, publisher, and resource information, so an old path copied from another computer can fail.
What successful registration looks like
When registration succeeds, PowerShell normally returns to the prompt without a terminating error. The app should reappear in Start for that user. Restart Windows if Start still shows stale entries, then test the app. If an error names a dependency, architecture, publisher, or manifest, record it before trying another route; repeatedly registering the same incorrect path will not repair a missing dependency.
Obtain a new package when the original is absent or damaged
If targeted queries find no usable package, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager. Availability is app-dependent: not every inbox app is published through the public Store, a private Store, or winget.

- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Search for the exact app name and confirm that the publisher and description match the Windows component you need.
- Select Get or Install, then wait for the download and registration to complete.
- Launch the app and sign in again if the app requires an account.
If Store itself is unavailable, this route cannot be used until Store access is repaired. A Store listing also does not prove that the app is available on every Windows edition or in every region.

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and search before installing:

winget search <AppName>Review the identifiers returned by the search. If the result is the correct app, install that identifier rather than guessing:
winget install <AppName>The angle-bracket text is a value you supply, not a literal command argument. Use the exact name or identifier shown by your search. If winget reports no matching package, that channel cannot restore the app; do not substitute an unrelated package simply because its name looks similar.

Microsoft Store is a special case
Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation states: “Removing the Microsoft Store App is not supported.” Treat Store differently from an ordinary built-in app. Do not present a universal PowerShell removal-and-reinstall command as an official recovery method.
If Store is missing or will not open, use Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance for your Windows release, check Windows Update, verify that the Microsoft Store Install Service and related system services have not been disabled by policy, and test with the intended user account. If the Store package has been fully removed, the documented Store package may not be available locally to re-register. In that situation, repair of Windows components or assistance from the device administrator may be required rather than a routine app reinstall.

“Access is denied” or registration affects the wrong account
Check which PowerShell window you used. All-user inspection requires elevation, but current-user registration should be run non-elevated for the affected account. Sign out and back in after correcting the registration scope.
The family name does not match
Use Get-AppxPackage to copy the exact PackageFamilyName. The display name, package name, package full name, and family name can differ by punctuation and version. A family name from an example or another Windows build may point to a different package.
The manifest path is invalid
Recheck InstallLocation and the package version. WindowsApps folders are protected, and a path copied from a web example may not exist on your system. Confirm that AppxManifest.xml is present before running Add-AppxPackage.

PowerShell reports missing dependencies
The app may require framework, runtime, language, or architecture packages that are not installed. Use the exact error details to identify the dependency, then obtain the app through its supported Store or winget listing when available. Avoid downloading random MSIX files from unofficial sites.
The app is listed but still will not launch
Try Repair, then Reset if its data can be discarded. Install pending Windows updates and restart. If the failure affects multiple inbox apps, investigate system component corruption or organizational policy rather than repeatedly resetting each app.
There is no Store or winget package
That result means the normal acquisition channels do not publish the app for your system. A package that remains on the device can still be registered, but a genuinely deleted package may require Windows servicing, an administrator-managed image, or repair of the operating system installation. Microsoft’s documentation does not guarantee one command that restores every removed built-in app.
Verify the recovery
- Confirm the app appears in Start for the affected account.
- Open it from Start, not only from a PowerShell command, to test normal registration.
- Exercise the feature that originally failed, such as opening a file type or saving a setting.
- Check whether Repair preserved your data or whether Reset/reinstallation requires sign-in and configuration again.
- If multiple users need the app, test each account separately; registration is user-specific even when the package files are shared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore every built-in Windows app with one PowerShell command?
No. The correct route depends on whether the package is present, whether it is registered for the current user, the Windows version, and whether Microsoft Store or winget offers that app. Microsoft does not guarantee a universal reinstall command.
Why did running the registration command as administrator not fix my account?
An elevated PowerShell session can register the package for the administrator account rather than the signed-in standard user. Inspect packages with elevation when necessary, but run current-user registration from a non-elevated PowerShell window for the account you are repairing.
Will re-registering an app delete its settings?
Registration restores the app’s package-to-user association. Reset is the operation that deletes local app data; a Store or winget reinstall can also leave you needing to configure or sign in again.
What if the app was removed by company policy?
A device policy, security baseline, or managed Windows image can block installation or registration. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.
The Bottom Line
First determine whether the app is broken, unregistered, or genuinely missing. Repair preserves data when available; Reset removes it. Re-register an existing package from a non-elevated PowerShell session for the intended user, and use Microsoft Store or winget only when that specific app is available there. Microsoft Store removal itself is unsupported.
