If Alexa stops responding, check power, Wi-Fi, and the microphone mute state, then restart the Echo by unplugging it and reconnecting it. Use a factory reset only if those steps fail, and follow the procedure for your exact model: button combinations and reset options differ, and a factory reset may erase settings or smart-home connections.
Check what has stopped responding
“Alexa is unresponsive” can mean several different things. Before resetting, identify whether the Echo has power, whether it hears voice requests, whether it can reach the internet, or whether the problem is limited to setup or a connected smart-home accessory.
- No lights or response at all: Check that the Echo is connected to power using its power adapter.
- The device is on but does not answer voice requests: Confirm it is not muted; Amazon says a red light indicates mute. On an Echo speaker, press the Action button to see whether it responds to a button press. Move it away from walls, other speakers, or background noise that could interfere with voice pickup. - Requests fail because of connectivity: Check that your internet connection works and confirm the Echo is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
- The issue occurs during setup or registration: Follow the separate Echo setup troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the device itself needs a factory reset.
Restart the Echo before resetting it
A restart disconnects and reconnects power; it is not the same as a factory reset. For the Echo (1st Generation), Amazon instructs users to unplug the power adapter from the device or outlet, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Other models’ restart directions may differ. For example, Amazon’s setup-recovery instructions call for waiting 30 seconds in that particular sequence, so use the timing given for your model and situation.

For other models, Amazon’s instructions commonly say to unplug and reconnect the device. Check the relevant model page below rather than treating one restart method or delay as universal.

Find the reset instructions for your exact model
Amazon documents different reset procedures across Echo devices. The examples below are not a complete list of every model or regional variant. Do not apply a button sequence to a device just because it looks similar; use its model-specific support instructions.

Choose the reset scope carefully
Some Echo models offer a reset that retains smart-home connections as well as a factory reset. A factory reset may erase personal information, device settings, or smart-home connections. Read your model’s instructions and the on-screen confirmation before proceeding; do not assume that every Echo offers the same choices.

Complete setup after the reset
After a button-based reset, the cited Amazon instructions say the Echo enters setup mode. Follow the prompts in the Alexa app to set it up again if asked. The Echo Spot (2024 release) displays a setup QR code after its reset procedure.

Setup or registration still fails
Check the internet connection and, where relevant, the Alexa app version. Amazon’s setup guidance recommends restarting first and resetting if the initial steps fail or registration remains a problem.

A smart-home accessory is the device that is unresponsive
If Alexa responds but a connected light, plug, or other accessory does not, troubleshoot that accessory separately. Check its compatibility and internet connection, consult the manufacturer’s app, and reconnect or re-pair it as appropriate. Amazon says that if those earlier steps fail, reset both the Alexa device and the smart-home device; follow each device’s own instructions.
The Echo still will not respond
If the correct model-specific reset does not resolve the issue, use Amazon support for that model to determine the next step. Do not repeat a reset sequence intended for a different Echo.
