If your Samsung Galaxy is frozen, hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together for at least seven seconds, then release when it restarts. If the phone appears completely dead, charge it with an undamaged Samsung-certified charger and cable before trying again. A Galaxy stuck on its logo or caught in a restart loop needs a different path: check Safe mode, install available updates, or use Smart Switch emergency recovery only when a software update has failed.

Choose the right recovery path first

The symptom determines the safest next step. A button-controlled force restart is appropriate for a temporary freeze; it cannot repair a failed battery, charging port, display, or other hardware. Charging is the priority when the battery may be empty. Safe mode and software-update tools apply when the phone can start partway, while Smart Switch emergency recovery is intended for a failed update rather than every no-boot condition.

What you see First action What the phone must be able to do Data risk
Screen is frozen or taps do nothing Hold Side/Power + Volume Down for at least seven seconds Buttons respond even if Android is unresponsive A forced restart is not a factory reset
Blank screen and no obvious activity Inspect the phone, charger and cable, then charge with a compatible Samsung-certified setup Battery and charging hardware must accept power Charging does not erase data
Samsung logo remains or the phone repeatedly reboots Try a restart; if it reaches Android, test Safe mode and check for updates Phone must boot far enough for Android settings or Safe mode Removing an app or installing an update is different from wiping the phone
Update failed and an emergency-recovery screen appears Use Smart Switch: MORE → Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization Windows or Mac computer, USB connection and Smart Switch Follow the recovery prompts; do not select a wipe/reset option casually
Visible damage or no response after charging and restart Stop troubleshooting and arrange Samsung or authorized service Professional inspection Service staff can explain any data implications before repair

Samsung notes that button names, menus and screens vary by Galaxy model, software version and mobile provider. Use the support page for your region and exact model when a screen differs from the descriptions below.

Before pressing buttons, make the situation safe

  • Remove a case or accessory that could prevent the Side/Power or Volume Down button from being fully pressed.
  • Look for a cracked display, bent frame, liquid exposure, a damaged USB-C port, frayed cable or distorted battery area. Do not continue charging visibly damaged equipment.
  • Use a compatible, Samsung-certified charger and cable. Samsung warns that incompatible, worn or damaged charging accessories can cause injury or damage; connector and device compatibility must be checked for the particular Galaxy model.
  • If the phone became hot, swollen, wet or physically damaged, disconnect it and seek service rather than repeatedly attempting to boot it.

Do not open the phone or attempt an unsupported firmware flash. The procedures below are designed for normal user troubleshooting and do not replace a hardware inspection.

When the Galaxy is frozen or the screen will not respond

Perform a forced restart

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button at the same time.
  2. Keep both buttons held for at least seven seconds. Samsung Australia describes the interval as more than seven seconds, so continue holding until the phone actually begins to restart rather than releasing early.
  3. Release the buttons when the Samsung logo or startup animation appears, and wait for the lock screen.

Samsung’s current regional guidance for this procedure is available from Samsung India and Samsung Australia. Both button names and the physical layout can differ slightly by model, but the simultaneous Side/Power and Volume Down hold is the documented first response for an unresponsive Galaxy.

A correctly performed forced restart is not the same operation as a factory reset. Samsung Philippines states: “If performed correctly, a forced restart will not erase any information from the phone.” That statement, from a page updated April 29, 2024, applies to the forced-restart action only; it does not promise that a reset, wipe, or other recovery-menu choice will preserve files.

If nothing happens

Check that both buttons were pressed together and that a case is not blocking them. Try the hold once more after removing the case. If the phone remains completely inert, move to the charging checks rather than repeatedly forcing the buttons. A force restart cannot create power when the battery is empty or repair a failed circuit.

When the phone appears completely off

Check for a depleted battery

  1. Inspect the phone, charger and cable for visible damage.
  2. Connect the Galaxy to a Samsung-certified charger and compatible cable.
  3. Leave it connected even if no battery icon or charging animation appears immediately. A fully drained battery may need time before the display shows a charging indication.
  4. If charging still seems suspect, try another compatible charger and data cable that are known to work.
  5. After the phone has had time to charge, press the Side/Power button to attempt a normal startup. If it is still frozen after power is available, use the forced-restart procedure.

Samsung does not specify one universal number of charging minutes for every Galaxy model and battery condition, so a fixed time promise would be misleading. The relevant test is whether the phone eventually shows charging activity or can start, not whether an icon appears immediately.

When a blank screen may be hardware-related

Samsung lists a temporary software freeze, a fully drained battery, a system malfunction and, in some cases, a hardware issue involving the device’s circuitry as possible causes of a phone that will not turn on. A damaged port, battery, display or internal circuit can therefore produce the same blank-screen symptom as an empty battery. If a known-good compatible charger makes no difference and the phone has damage or unusual heat, arrange an inspection through Samsung Support rather than applying more force or opening the handset.

When the Galaxy is stuck on the Samsung logo or keeps restarting

A logo loop means the phone is receiving enough power to begin startup but is not completing the Android boot process. Samsung’s boot-loop guidance recommends checking for damage, trying a restart, charging, updating software and using Smart Switch update options where available.

Try the restart and inspect the hardware

Start with the seven-second Side/Power plus Volume Down hold. Before repeating it, inspect the phone for impact, liquid or port damage. A restart can clear a temporary system lockup, but it will not correct a physically failed component.

Use Safe mode to test third-party apps

If the phone can reach Android or remain usable long enough to access its startup controls, start it in Safe mode using the model-specific procedure in Samsung’s Safe mode guide. In Safe mode, third-party apps do not run. If the looping stops there, remove recently installed or recently updated apps, then restart normally and test again. Treat the result as a diagnostic clue: Safe mode can identify an app-related startup problem, but it does not prove that every boot failure is caused by an app.

The exact labels and entry method can vary by model and software version. Follow the screen instructions for the particular Galaxy instead of assuming that a key sequence from another model will work.

Install an available software update

If the phone boots normally or stays usable, open its Settings software-update area and check for an update. Samsung’s US troubleshooting page explains that an update may also be offered through Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC when a newer version is available. Keep the USB connection in place and follow every prompt until the update finishes; interrupting the connection can create another update failure.

Menu names and screen layouts change between Galaxy generations, Android releases and carriers. If an option is absent, use the model-specific support instructions rather than selecting an unrelated reset command.

Recovering after a failed software update with Smart Switch

Smart Switch’s Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization workflow is a targeted remedy for a software update that failed and left the device in an emergency-recovery state. Samsung does not present it as a universal solution for a phone that has never shown an update error.

  1. Disconnect the Galaxy from the computer.
  2. Close Smart Switch completely, then reopen the program.
  3. Open MORE and choose Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.
  4. Select the device shown by Smart Switch as requiring recovery.
  5. Reconnect the phone when the software requests it and follow the on-screen prompts without removing the USB cable during the recovery.

Use Samsung’s Smart Switch Phone Recovery Guide for the exact prompts shown by the current Mac or Windows version. If recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, record the emergency recovery code and use Smart Switch’s other-computer recovery option, as Samsung describes. A different computer can rule out a local Smart Switch problem; it does not repair a physically defective phone.

What to do when recovery still fails

If the Galaxy will not respond after a compatible charging attempt and a correctly performed forced restart, or if it repeatedly loops despite the software checks, treat the problem as potentially beyond a temporary freeze or discharged battery. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recognizes possible hardware causes and directs users toward inspection and service when damage is present.

  • Contact Samsung Support for the country where the phone is being used, or locate an authorized service center.
  • Describe the symptom precisely: blank screen, logo loop, repeated restarts, failed update, charging indicator absent, visible damage or unusual heat.
  • Tell the technician whether the phone contains irreplaceable data and whether you have a recent backup.
  • Do not follow random firmware-flashing instructions, install unofficial recovery images or pry open the phone. Those actions can worsen the fault and can affect service eligibility.

Service availability, repair options and data handling can differ by region, model and warranty status. A technician can determine whether the problem is the battery, port, screen, mainboard or software after inspection; the symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis.

Force restart versus reset: understand the data boundary

A forced restart simply interrupts a frozen operating session and starts the phone again. It is fundamentally different from a factory data reset, which is intended to remove user data, downloaded applications and settings. Never describe a factory reset as data-preserving, and do not choose a recovery-menu item labeled Wipe data, Factory data reset or similar unless you have deliberately backed up what you can and accepted the loss.

If the phone can start even briefly, back up photos, contacts, messages and authenticator information before attempting more invasive recovery. If it cannot start, check whether data was already synchronized to the relevant cloud account or copied elsewhere. A forced restart’s data-safety statement does not extend to Smart Switch initialization, factory reset or repair procedures that require storage replacement.

Practical symptom checks

The phone vibrates but the display stays black

Try the forced restart, then charge with a known-good compatible setup. Vibration without a visible image can indicate a display or display-connection problem, especially after a drop. If charging and the restart do not restore an image, arrange service rather than assuming Android is the only fault.

The logo appears briefly, then the phone shuts down

Charge first, because a deeply depleted battery may not sustain startup. If the behavior continues with adequate charging, try Safe mode if the handset can reach it and remove a recently added third-party app. Persistent shutdowns after those checks require professional diagnosis.

The phone restarts continuously after an update

Allow the update process to complete if a progress screen is still active. If the update clearly failed and Smart Switch identifies the device for recovery, use the Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization path. Do not treat that workflow as a general-purpose boot-loop reset when no update error occurred.

The phone was dropped or exposed to liquid

Do not keep charging a visibly damaged or wet phone. Disconnect accessories, avoid opening the device and contact Samsung or an authorized service center. A force restart cannot correct damage to the battery, port, screen or internal circuitry.

Regional and model differences to keep in mind

The core force-restart instruction is consistent across the cited Samsung regional pages, but support wording and menus are not identical. Samsung India’s page was updated July 22, 2026; Samsung Australia’s page was updated August 7, 2026; and Samsung’s Philippines page carrying the data-preservation statement was updated April 29, 2024. Use those pages as regional references, then verify the instructions against the exact Galaxy model, software version and carrier. Recovery screens, Safe mode entry and Smart Switch prompts can change even when the symptom is the same.

There are no reliable universal success rates or repair-cost figures for these procedures. Samsung’s support material is procedural guidance, not a study of failure frequency, so a phone that does not recover should be evaluated on its own symptoms and hardware condition.
