Use Settings > System > Restart for a normal reboot when Google TV responds. If the screen is frozen, unplug the device for one minute, reconnect it, and press Power on the remote. A factory reset is different: it erases the device’s data and requires setup and app downloads again. Use it only after less destructive troubleshooting, or when you are deliberately clearing the device.

Choose the right reset method first

Google TV devices have three different recovery actions. A menu restart reloads the operating system without intentionally removing your installed data. A power cycle cuts and restores power when the interface cannot accept commands. A factory reset returns the device to its setup state and removes local device data. Selecting the wrong action can turn a simple freeze into an unnecessary setup job, so start with the device’s symptoms.

Method Use it when How to start Data impact
Restart from Settings The home screen and menus respond normally, or you want a routine reboot. Settings > System > Restart Designed as a reboot, not a deliberate wipe.
One-minute power cycle The device is frozen, stuck on a screen, or ignores the remote. Unplug power for one minute, reconnect, then press Power. It is a restart procedure, not a factory reset.
Factory reset from Settings Persistent problems remain after troubleshooting, or you want to set the device up from scratch. Settings > System > About > Factory reset Erases device data; setup, apps, and content downloads are required again.
Physical-button factory reset The model-specific button procedure is required, usually because menus are inaccessible. Hold the reset button for the model’s specified time and watch the LED. Also destructive and cannot be undone.

Menu names and locations can vary on televisions made by different manufacturers or with different software versions. The paths below are Google’s general Google TV instructions; if an item is missing, identify the exact model and use its current device instructions rather than guessing at a button combination.

Restart a responsive Google TV from the Settings menu

This is the safest first action when Google TV still displays the home screen and accepts remote input. It reloads the system and is appropriate after a temporary slowdown, an app that has stopped responding, or ordinary maintenance.

  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Restart.
  4. Confirm the restart if an on-screen prompt appears, then wait for the Google TV start-up screen and home screen to return.

Do not remove power while the device is shutting down unless it has become unresponsive. A normal restart gives the system an orderly chance to close running processes. If the Restart command is not shown, check that you are in the device’s system settings rather than an individual app’s settings, and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that model and software release.

When a normal restart is enough

Use this route for a one-off freeze that clears after the menus become available, brief interface lag, or a recently installed app that behaves incorrectly. A restart does not replace app or system updates, so continue troubleshooting if the same symptom returns.

Power-cycle a frozen or unresponsive device

When the remote does nothing, the screen is stuck, or you cannot reach Settings, Google recommends removing power temporarily. This procedure is deliberately simple and applies to a Google TV streaming device that has a separate power cable. It is not the same as selecting Factory reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the Google TV device’s power cable from the device or power source.
  2. Leave it completely unplugged for one minute. A short disconnect may not clear the condition.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and wait for the device to begin starting.
  4. Press Power on the remote when the device has power again.

Allow several minutes for the boot sequence before pressing buttons repeatedly. The television may briefly show no signal while the streamer restarts; that alone does not indicate data loss. If the device returns to the same frozen screen, use the troubleshooting checks below before escalating to a factory reset.

What this power cycle does not do

Unplugging and reconnecting power does not intentionally erase apps, accounts, preferences, or downloaded content. It also cannot correct every cause of a freeze. A failing power supply, overheating, a damaged cable, network trouble, or a software problem that returns at boot can require model-specific support after the cycle.

Factory-reset Google TV through Settings

A factory reset is a destructive setup operation. Google advises trying other troubleshooting first. Once confirmed, the reset clears data on the device, cannot be undone, and leaves you to complete initial setup and download the apps and content you use again.

Use the general Google TV menu path

  1. Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open About.
  4. Choose Factory reset.
  5. Read the warning, verify that you intend to wipe the device, and confirm. Do not disconnect power while the reset is running.

The exact wording can differ by model, and a television with a manufacturer’s customized interface may put the command elsewhere. If you cannot find About or Factory reset, stop rather than selecting an unrelated reset option; check the model’s support instructions.

What you should expect after confirmation

The device reboots and returns to its out-of-box setup flow. You will need to reconnect it to the television and network as prompted, complete the displayed setup steps, and download the apps and content you want again. Google specifically warns that apps and content must be downloaded again after a reset. Keep the remote available and make sure you can complete account sign-in and network setup before starting.

Use the physical reset button only for the correct model

Physical-button instructions are not universal. Google documents separate procedures for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer (4K). A Google TV television from another manufacturer can use a different button, timing sequence, or recovery process. Confirm the product name printed on the device or its original documentation before holding a button.

Chromecast with Google TV

  1. Leave the Chromecast plugged into the television and powered on.
  2. Find the button on the back of the Chromecast and press and hold it.
  3. Watch the status LED. It first blinks yellow.
  4. When the LED becomes solid white, release the button.
  5. The Chromecast begins its factory-reset process. Leave it powered until the setup screen appears.

Releasing before the solid-white indication may not initiate the documented reset. Do not apply this timing to another Google TV product; the LED behavior and button location are model-specific.

Google TV Streamer (4K)

  1. Keep the Streamer plugged into the television and powered on.
  2. Press and hold the button on the back for approximately 10–12 seconds.
  3. Continue watching the LED until it starts blinking yellow.
  4. Release the button when the LED turns solid white.
  5. Wait for the reset and the return of the initial setup experience.

The 10–12-second hold applies to the Google TV Streamer (4K) procedure documented by Google. It is not a general rule for every television or streaming box that runs Google TV.

Prepare before wiping the device

Preparation prevents a reset from creating a second problem, such as being unable to reconnect the device or remember which apps you need. Use this checklist while the interface is still accessible, if possible.

  • TiVo Stream 4K is one of Time Magazine’s “2020 Best Inventions, Special Mention” and PCMag hails it as “an excellent media streamer for TV lovers.” Operating Temperature 0˚C - 40˚C
  • Confirm that a wipe is necessary. Try a normal restart, the one-minute power cycle, and the relevant app or update checks first. Google’s troubleshooting sequence places those actions before factory reset.
  • Check app updates. An app-specific failure may be fixed by updating that app rather than erasing the entire device.
  • Check for a system update. A current software update can address a known device issue without removing your setup.
  • Close or stop troublesome background apps when the menus allow it. This is a useful step for sluggish behavior and does not require a factory wipe.
  • Verify network access. Have the correct Wi-Fi details available so the device can complete setup after the reset.
  • Confirm account access. Make sure you can complete the sign-in steps shown during setup and know which account you want to use.
  • List the apps and services you need. A reset removes the local installation state, so plan to download your regular apps and content again.
  • Identify the exact hardware. A Chromecast with Google TV, a Google TV Streamer (4K), and a television with Google TV do not necessarily share the same physical reset procedure.

A reset is not a backup mechanism. Treat anything stored only on the device as subject to removal, and do not start the operation merely to cure a temporary freeze.

Complete setup after a factory reset

After the reset finishes, the device behaves like newly configured hardware. The precise screens vary, but the sequence normally requires the television connection, remote interaction, network connection, account setup, and app downloads.

  1. Turn on the television input to which the Google TV device is connected and wait for the welcome screen.
  2. Pair or reconnect the remote when the setup screen asks for it. Keep the remote close enough for the pairing process.
  3. Select the requested language, region, and network, then enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
  4. Complete the displayed Google account sign-in and any verification steps.
  5. Allow the device to check for system updates before judging its performance.
  6. Download the apps and content you actually use, rather than reinstalling everything at once if you are diagnosing a problem.
  7. Open the app that originally caused trouble and test it before changing many other settings. This makes it easier to tell whether the reset addressed that symptom.

Keep the device powered during initial updates and downloads. If setup cannot reach the network, troubleshoot the connection independently; repeating the factory reset will not substitute for a working network.

Troubleshoot when the expected option or result is missing

The Settings path does not match

Google’s general path is Settings > System > Restart for a reboot and Settings > System > About > Factory reset for a wipe. A manufacturer-customized television can rename, move, or add confirmation screens. Use the model number from the television’s settings, label, or documentation and follow that manufacturer’s current instructions. Do not infer that a menu item called “reset” is a factory reset without reading its description.

The remote is unresponsive but the device has power

First perform the one-minute power cycle. After reconnecting power, press Power once and wait for the boot sequence. If the device responds but the remote still does not, address remote batteries or pairing separately; repeatedly holding a reset button on an unidentified model risks wiping the wrong product.

The screen remains frozen after a power cycle

Repeat the sequence carefully with a full one-minute disconnection, then check whether the device reaches the home screen. If it does, install pending system and app updates and close background apps that may be causing lag. If it freezes before menus appear every time, identify the model and use its documented recovery instructions or manufacturer support. A factory reset may be appropriate only after those checks and with the data-loss consequences accepted.

The device resets but the original problem returns

Test the device before restoring every app and changing all settings. If the issue appears in the clean setup state, an app installation is unlikely to be the immediate trigger; check power, cabling, ventilation, network conditions, and model-specific support. If the issue starts only after one app is installed, update or troubleshoot that app instead of repeatedly wiping the device.

The television says “no signal” after restarting

Confirm that the television is on the HDMI input used by the Google TV device and give the streamer time to boot. A temporary blank screen during power restoration is not proof that a factory reset occurred. If no signal persists, check the device’s power connection and the HDMI connection before attempting another reset.

Google TV streamer versus a television with Google TV

“Google TV” describes the software experience, not one universal hardware design. A separate Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer (4K) has its own power cable, LED, and rear button. A television with Google TV integrates the software into the set and may use the television remote, a recessed control, or a manufacturer-specific recovery menu.

For a television, begin with its on-screen Settings path if available. If the set is completely unresponsive, do not assume the Chromecast or Streamer button procedure applies; locate the television’s exact model instructions. This distinction is especially important because holding a button on the wrong device can trigger a different function or no function at all.

  1. Can you navigate the home screen? Select Settings > System > Restart for a routine reboot.
  2. Is the device frozen or ignoring input? Unplug its power for one minute, reconnect it, and press Power.
  3. Did the problem return after updates and app troubleshooting? Consider a factory reset, but first confirm the model and your ability to complete setup again.
  4. Are you using a physical button? Follow only the documented procedure for Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer (4K); use television-specific instructions for an integrated set.
  5. Are you ready to lose local setup data? If not, stop at the restart or power-cycle stage and continue diagnosis.

Bottom line

Restart a responsive Google TV through Settings > System > Restart. For a frozen device, use the one-minute unplug-and-reconnect power cycle. Reserve Settings > System > About > Factory reset, or the verified model-specific button procedure, for a deliberate wipe after other troubleshooting. A factory reset cannot be undone and means setting the device up and downloading apps and content again.
