For most Sony TVs running Google TV or Android TV, hold the remote’s POWER button for about five seconds, until a power-off message appears. The TV should restart automatically; give it about a minute to return. This restart does not erase saved settings. If it does not work, try the TV’s restart menu or perform a two-minute power reset. These steps apply to Google TV and Android TV models, not every Sony TV.
How to restart your Sony TV with the remote
- Turn on the TV and point the remote toward the TV’s illumination or status LED.
- Press and hold the remote’s POWER button for about five seconds, or until a power-off message appears. Some models show a Cancel or Restart screen after the button has been held for three seconds or longer; if prompted, select Restart.
- Wait about one minute for the TV to restart. If it does not turn back on by itself, press POWER once.
Sony recommends disconnecting external USB storage devices before restarting an Android TV or Google TV. This is a restart, not a factory reset: it does not erase saved settings or information. See Sony’s restart and power-reset instructions.
How to restart from the TV’s settings menu
If you can navigate the menus, look for the restart option. Labels and paths differ by model and software version; use the path that matches your TV:
- Quick Settings → Settings → System → Restart → Restart
- HOME → Settings → About → Restart → Restart
- HOME → Settings → Device Preferences → About → Restart → Restart
Not every Sony TV has all of these menu labels. If you cannot find a restart option, use the remote-button method or check the instructions for your model.

If restarting does not help: perform a power reset
A power reset interrupts power to the TV; it is different from restoring factory settings. Sony’s general procedure for Android TV and Google TV is:
- Turn the TV off.
- Unplug its power cord from the outlet.
- Leave the TV unplugged for two minutes.
- While it is still unplugged, press and release the TV’s physical POWER button. The button is commonly underneath the set or on its back; its location varies by model.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the TV on.
Some Google TV models have an alternative procedure: hold the TV’s physical POWER button for about 40 seconds, or until the TV turns off. This is model-specific, so follow the instructions for your exact set rather than assuming the option applies to every Sony TV. Restart, power reset, and factory reset are not the same

Do not choose a factory reset when you mean to restart. Sony describes factory reset as a separate procedure, and a forced factory reset is a last resort for situations such as an inaccessible menu or unavailable remote, or when Sony specifically instructs you to do one. What to do if the problem continues
A restart may help with symptoms such as sound without a picture, remote-control problems, or apps that run very slowly, but it is an initial troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed repair. Note whether the issue affects the TV menus, one particular app, or only an external input; that distinction helps direct the next troubleshooting step.

- For picture or sound problems, follow Sony’s symptom-specific checks rather than repeatedly restarting.
- For playback or app problems, use the matching app or playback troubleshooting guidance.
- If the issue persists, Sony’s instructions may point to a software update or service, depending on the symptom.
