If someone shared your dating profile without permission, save evidence first, report the post to the service hosting it, and report the conduct to the dating app if it came from your profile. If the post includes an intimate photo or video, use the specialized intimate-image reporting route; an ordinary profile screenshot does not qualify for that process just because it was shared without consent.

The right next step depends on what was shared and where it appeared. A copied profile screenshot, an intimate image, and a threat to publish an image are not all the same situation. Preserve a record and report the content accurately; then use the specific intimate-image process only if the material meets that description. If there are threats, ongoing harassment, blackmail, or an immediate safety concern, consider local authorities and support services as well as platform reporting.

First, preserve evidence before it disappears

Before reporting, blocking, or asking someone to delete the post, make a clear record of what happened. The eSafety Commissioner recommends collecting information about the incident and where it occurred so it can support reports to a platform, eSafety, or police. See eSafety’s online dating guidance.

Try to make the record useful to someone who has not seen the post. Capture the material itself, its location, and the details that help identify the account or people involved. A screenshot without context may not show which service or account posted it; a link alone may not preserve what the post said. Where possible, keep both the image of the post and the location or account details.

  • Capture screenshots that show the post and enough surrounding context to identify it.
  • Save the post’s URL or other location details, such as the group or page name.
  • Record the account name or other identifiers of the person who posted it.
  • Keep related messages, including threats or conversations about the post.
  • Note when you found the content and preserve original files where possible; do not edit your only copy.

Keep the elements together so you can refer to the same incident consistently when contacting the hosting service, the dating app, or authorities. Note what you know and avoid treating guesses as facts. If you do not have a URL, record the location as clearly as you can—for example, the service and the group or page where you encountered it. If the content appears in more than one place, preserve the location details for each one.

Store the record somewhere you can access safely. If the post is deleted later, your saved record can still help you explain what happened and when. Evidence collection is not a substitute for reporting, but it can help you describe what you are asking a service or authority to review. If preserving or revisiting the material would put your safety at risk, prioritize safety and seek help from a local support service.

Report the post to the service hosting it

Use the website, social network, forum, or other service where the material appeared. Select the closest accurate reporting reason available, such as harassment, privacy, impersonation, or nonconsensual intimate imagery if an intimate image was shared. Explain what was posted and why you are reporting it, and ask for review or removal. Save the confirmation or case number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the report factual and specific. Identify the post or account using the location details you recorded, explain that the material is your dating profile or image, and say what action you are asking the service to take. If the report form offers a category that fits what happened, choose it rather than labeling an ordinary profile screenshot as intimate imagery. If the first category seems imperfect, use the closest accurate option available and explain the situation in the description field if there is one.

If the post appears in several locations on the same service, include the details for each location that you can identify. If it appears on different services, report it to each relevant host. The practical reason to separate the reports is that each service controls its own site or app; a report to one host is not a report to every other place the material may appear. Keep any confirmation or case number with your evidence so you can refer to the report later.

If the content was taken from a dating profile, separately report the conduct or account to the dating app. eSafety advises reporting abusive profiles or messages through the dating service’s app or website. The relevant reporting categories and the platform’s response vary by service, so a report does not guarantee removal or an account ban.

These are two distinct reporting steps: the hosting service can review the post on its own service, while the dating app can review the account or conduct connected to its service. Explain the connection without assuming the dating app can remove material posted elsewhere. If you do not know who made the post, you can still report the content and provide the information you have; do not wait to identify the person before contacting the host.

Know whether the post is an intimate image

An ordinary screenshot of your dating profile, profile text, or a non-intimate photo is not automatically covered by the specialized U.S. intimate-image process. The Federal Trade Commission describes image-based abuse as creating, sharing, or threatening to share an intimate photo or video without permission. Its guidance includes real, digitally altered, and AI-generated intimate images. See the FTC’s Image-Based Abuse: What To Know and Do.

That distinction matters when you choose a reporting route. A profile screenshot may still be something you want a service to review under its policies, and you should report it to the host and dating app as appropriate. But the Take It Down Act process is not a general takedown route for any personal information shared without permission. Use the intimate-image process when what was shared is an intimate photo or video within the FTC guidance, including covered digitally altered or AI-generated material—not merely because the post identifies you or came from a dating profile.

A threat to share an intimate image is also relevant: the FTC describes image-based abuse as including threats to share. Preserve the messages and report them to the service. If the threat involves blackmail, ongoing harassment, or concern for your safety, consider contacting local authorities or a support service. Do not assume that the specialized platform-removal process for an image is the only support or reporting option for a threat.

If an intimate photo or video was shared in the United States

Ask the platform hosting the image to remove it through its request process. Under the FTC’s current guidance, covered platforms must provide a way to submit valid removal requests and remove covered intimate images and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request. The FTC states that enforcement of the Take It Down Act began May 19, 2026, the date by which covered platforms had to provide the request process and meet the 48-hour removal requirement.

Start with the service that hosts the image because the FTC says platforms—not the FTC—are the ones that can take down intimate photos and videos shared without consent. Use the host’s request process and provide the information it asks for to make a valid request. Keep a record of when you submitted it and any confirmation. The 48-hour period described by the FTC applies after a valid request; it is not a promise that every report, including a request about a non-intimate screenshot, will be removed within that time.

If the platform does not remove the image within 48 hours of a valid request, or it has no working request process, report the platform through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC says adults may also use StopNCII.org to help limit the spread of intimate images. For minors, the FTC points to National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reporting and Take It Down resources.

The FTC’s role in this route is to receive a report about a platform that fails to act or lacks a working request process. Submitting a report to the FTC is not itself a direct request for the FTC to remove the image from a website. Report to the hosting platform first, then use TakeItDown.ftc.gov if the platform does not meet the stated requirement or does not provide a working process.

This is a specific route for covered intimate images and known identical copies—not a general guarantee that a dating-profile screenshot, text, or other non-intimate content will be removed. The FTC emphasizes that only platforms can take down intimate photos and videos shared without consent; use the service hosting the content rather than treating the FTC report as a direct takedown request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC’s announcement says enforcement began May 19, 2026. That date is tied to the Act’s deadline for covered platforms to have a request process and remove covered images and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. Do not apply those terms to every website, every kind of post, or every content-removal request: the guidance is specifically about covered intimate images and covered platforms.

Reduce further exposure and plan before blocking

Review the dating app’s privacy and safety settings, including who can see your profile and location. eSafety recommends limiting identifying details such as your full name, workplace, or location, and avoiding photos reused from social media when possible because those can make cross-platform identification easier. These steps may reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that someone will not copy or share profile material.

Consider what information in the profile could connect it to other parts of your life. A full name, workplace, or location can make you easier to identify; a photo already used on social media can make cross-platform identification easier. You can review your profile and adjust what it reveals, as well as check who can see it and what location controls are available. The eSafety advice is about reducing exposure, not a promise that privacy settings can prevent copying or eliminate risk.

After saving evidence and making reports, blocking or muting the person may help stop contact. Think about the order of those actions: blocking or muting can change what you can see or how you can communicate, so make a record first if it is safe to do so. Report the conduct through the relevant services as appropriate, then consider whether cutting off contact is helpful for your situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the situation involves family, domestic, or sexual violence, or coercive control, eSafety cautions that it can be important to make an online safety plan before reporting and blocking. In those circumstances, the safest course may depend on your situation; a local specialist support service can help you consider the risks before changing access or contact. If you believe your physical safety is at risk, contact local emergency or police services.

Escalate serious threats, ongoing harassment, image-based abuse, blackmail, or immediate safety concerns beyond a routine platform report. The relevant authority depends on where you are. In Australia, eSafety advises contacting police if personal safety is at risk or a crime has been committed. Elsewhere, contact the appropriate local police, emergency service, online-safety authority, or support service. If danger is immediate, use your local emergency channel.

What the law and platform rules do—and do not—establish

There is no universal legal rule established here for every reposted dating profile. Whether sharing ordinary profile text or a non-intimate photo violates a law or platform policy depends on your location and the facts, including what was shared, how it was obtained, how it was used, and the relevant service’s policies. For advice about a specific dispute, consult a local legal professional or an appropriate local support service.

In particular, the existence of a specialized intimate-image removal process should not be read as a conclusion that every repost of a dating profile is unlawful, or that every service must remove every screenshot on request. For ordinary profile material, report the content under the host’s applicable process and check its policies. For a specific legal question, the relevant details and the law where you live matter; the guidance here does not decide whether a particular repost broke a law.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC’s OkCupid/Match case is a separate matter: the FTC alleged that a dating service shared users’ personal information, including photos and location information, contrary to privacy promises. The case page was last updated March 30, 2026, and reports the matter as pending; those allegations are not a final finding and do not establish a general rule about one user reposting another person’s profile.

That case concerns allegations about a dating service’s handling of user information, not a finding about an individual who copies or reposts another user’s profile. It therefore should not be treated as a shortcut to a legal answer about your own situation. Keep the focus on the specific post, the relevant service’s reporting process, and local advice if you need help assessing legal rights or options.

Where to get help outside the United States

The Take It Down Act guidance above concerns covered platforms and intimate images in the United States. The eSafety Commissioner’s material is Australian guidance on online dating, collecting evidence, reporting to services, and safety planning. If you are elsewhere, contact the platform and seek guidance from the relevant local online-safety authority, police, or support service. Where personal safety is at risk or you believe a crime has occurred, use the appropriate local emergency or police channel.

The steps of preserving evidence and reporting to the service that hosts the material are practical starting points, but the intimate-image deadlines and reporting route described above are U.S.-specific. Likewise, eSafety’s advice is Australian guidance, not a universal statement of local law. If you are outside those jurisdictions, look for the relevant local authority or support service and ask what reporting or safety options apply where you live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are not sure whether your situation is urgent, take threats, blackmail, repeated harassment, or concerns about physical safety seriously. A platform report may be useful, but it is not a substitute for police or specialist support when you face a credible safety risk. Keep the record you saved and explain what has happened to the local service you contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Someone posted a screenshot of my dating profile. What should I do first?

Save evidence before reporting or blocking: capture the post and context, save its URL or other location details, record the account identifiers and date, and keep related messages. Then report the post to the service hosting it and report the conduct or account to the dating app if the material came from your profile.

Does an ordinary dating-profile screenshot count as an intimate image?

No. An ordinary profile screenshot, profile text, or non-intimate photo is not automatically covered by the specialized U.S. intimate-image process. The FTC guidance concerns intimate photos or videos, including real, digitally altered, and AI-generated intimate images.

What if someone threatens to post an intimate photo?

The FTC describes image-based abuse as including threats to share an intimate photo or video. Preserve the messages and report the threat to the service. If it involves blackmail, ongoing harassment, or a safety concern, consider contacting local authorities or a support service as well.

How long does a U.S. platform have to remove an intimate image?

The FTC says covered platforms must remove covered intimate images and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request. Ask the hosting platform through its request process first. If it fails to remove the image within 48 hours or has no working request process, report the platform through TakeItDown.ftc.gov.

Will reporting the post guarantee that it is removed or that the account is banned?

No. Reporting categories and outcomes vary by service. Explain what happened, select the closest accurate reason, ask for review or removal, and save the confirmation or case number. The guidance does not promise removal or an account ban for ordinary profile material.

Should I block the person who posted my profile?

Blocking or muting may help stop contact, but preserve evidence and make reports first if it is safe to do so. If the situation involves family, domestic, or sexual violence or coercive control, eSafety cautions that it may be important to make an online safety plan before reporting and blocking.

What should I do if I am outside the United States?

The Take It Down Act process described here is U.S.-specific, while eSafety’s online-dating guidance is Australian. Contact the hosting service and seek advice from the relevant local online-safety authority, police, or support service. Use local emergency services if your safety is at immediate risk.

The Bottom Line

Save a clear record first, report the post to the service hosting it, and report related conduct to the dating app. Use the U.S. Take It Down Act process only for covered intimate images—not ordinary dating-profile screenshots—and contact local authorities or support services for threats, blackmail, ongoing harassment, or safety risks.
