If you entered your crypto wallet’s seed phrase on a fake site, treat the wallet as compromised. The phrase cannot be made secret again: create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase on a separate, trusted device or browser profile, then move any remaining assets if it is safe to do so. Do not send more funds to the old wallet to pay transaction fees if an attacker may be sweeping it.
What to do first
- Stop using the fake site. Close it, do not enter the phrase again, and do not follow its links or contact details. Do not trust unsolicited messages offering support or recovery.
- Set up a clean replacement wallet. Use a separate browser profile or device and generate a brand-new recovery phrase. If the Google or Apple account on that device may also be compromised, use a different account or device. For a hardware wallet, follow the manufacturer’s official setup instructions and generate the new phrase on the device. Never restore the replacement wallet from the exposed phrase.
- Secure the new phrase. Keep it private and store it securely offline. Never enter it on a website or share it with a support agent, recovery service, or anyone else.
- Move remaining assets only if safe and feasible. Transfer them from the compromised wallet accounts to the new wallet. MetaMask cautions that a sweeper script may take funds sent to the old wallet; do not add ETH, tokens, or other funds just to pay fees if a sweeper may be active. The official guide describes this as damage limitation, not guaranteed rescue: MetaMask’s hacked-or-scammed account guidance.
- Stop using the exposed wallet. After moving what you safely can, discontinue the old phrase and accounts derived from it. Review browser history and scan the device for further compromise, as MetaMask recommends.
Why the old wallet is no longer safe
A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase or—in MetaMask— a Secret Recovery Phrase, can be used to derive the wallet’s private keys. Someone who obtains it may be able to control the associated accounts and assets. MetaMask’s guidance is direct: “You should never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on any website, regardless of how convincing it is.” Its guide to verifying the real MetaMask wallet says that entering the phrase on a fraudulent site compromises the wallet. This is MetaMask-specific guidance; for another wallet, use its independently located official website and support resources.
Changing a password, deleting the fake site, or removing the wallet app does not revoke the exposed phrase. A fresh wallet must have a newly generated phrase. A hardware wallet can be used to create and protect a new wallet, but buying one does not reverse a transfer or restore the old phrase’s secrecy.

Phrase theft and malicious approvals are different
Entering a phrase gives an attacker a route to the wallet’s keys, so replacing the wallet is necessary. A token approval or malicious signature is different: it may authorize a contract to move specified assets or perform a particular action. In that case, reviewing and revoking suspicious permissions may help limit the authorization, but revocation does not secure an exposed phrase. Both attacks can occur in the same incident.

If you connected a wallet or signed something but did not disclose the phrase, review the transaction and permissions using a trustworthy, chain-specific tool. Ethereum.org explains approval revocation and other response steps in its scam help and reporting guidance. Do not treat approval revocation as a substitute for replacing a wallet whose phrase was exposed.
Can stolen crypto be recovered?
There is no guaranteed way to reverse a completed self-custodial transaction. MetaMask says it cannot reverse transactions or restore missing funds. If you can safely transfer assets that remain, focus on containing further loss. If stolen funds appear to reach a centralized exchange, contact that exchange promptly with the relevant transaction details; it may investigate, but recovery is not assured.

Be especially wary of people who claim they can retrieve stolen crypto for an upfront payment, or who ask for your phrase or private key. Ethereum.org warns about fake recovery experts, and Coinbase’s technical-support and impersonation scam guidance explains why credential requests and unsolicited demands to move funds should not be treated as legitimate support.

Keep transaction hashes, wallet addresses, timestamps, screenshots, the fake site’s URL, and relevant messages. Share these details with your wallet provider and appropriate local authorities, but never share the seed phrase or private key. Reporting options depend on where you live:
