To respec in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, speak with High Factotum Janris Danrok aboard your flagship and select his respecialization dialogue option. The normal respec rebuilds skills and talents chosen while leveling, but it does not change your character’s Archetype or a companion’s preselected Archetype.
Each use costs Profit Factor, and the guide documenting the route says the cost increases over time. A Fellowship of the Void vendor discount can reduce the cost, but no reliable current price schedule is established. Some major updates also granted a one-time free respecialization to party members in existing saves; that historical benefit should not be treated as a permanent recurring allowance.
What respec means in Rogue Trader
Rogue Trader separates a character’s build into choices made during level-up and a broader Archetype path. The built-in respecialization system lets you revisit the first category. It is therefore a rebuild of skills and talents, not a return to the character-creation screen.
This distinction matters when a build feels ineffective. You can correct many poor level-up decisions, change how a character spends future points, and rebuild a companion around a different role within the same Archetype. You cannot use the ordinary dialogue to replace the Archetype already selected for the protagonist or for a companion.

- Reset by the vanilla system: skills and talents selected during leveling.
- Not reset by the vanilla system: the character’s Archetype.
- Companions: they can use the same respecialization route for level-up choices, but their preselected Archetypes remain in place.
- Payment: Profit Factor, with later respecs costing more according to the documented guide.
If your goal is to replace an Archetype or recreate a character from level 0, the standard in-game option does not provide that depth. The optional ToyBox mod lists a separate level-0 respec feature, discussed below.
How to respec your player character or a companion
The procedure is performed on the flagship through a named NPC, rather than from the character sheet. Use this sequence for either the protagonist or a companion.
- Return to your flagship. The documented respecialization route is available aboard the ship.
- Find High Factotum Janris Danrok. He is the NPC identified as the normal in-game respec contact.
- Start his conversation. Look for the dialogue choice referring to respecialization.
- Select the character to rebuild. Apply the option to your own character or choose the companion whose level-up choices you want to revise.
- Review the rebuild before confirming. Check the replacement skills and talents carefully, since the ordinary system does not alter the selected Archetype.
- Confirm the respec and its Profit Factor cost. The game uses Profit Factor for this service, and the documented guide says the charge rises with successive uses.
There is no separate companion-only station described for this process. If you are looking for a “level 1” or “level 0” button, remember that the ordinary dialogue is a level-up rebuild rather than a complete character-creation reset.
What happens to Archetypes
An Archetype is the major progression choice that structures a character’s advancement. The available vanilla respec documentation explicitly excludes it from the reset. That rule applies to the main character and to companions.
Player character
You can redistribute the skills and talents selected while leveling, but the respec does not let you select a different Archetype. Plan around the existing Archetype when choosing replacement options; selecting talents that belong to a different progression concept will not turn the character into that Archetype.

Companions
Companions have their own preselected Archetypes. Respecialization can revise their level-up skills and talents while leaving those underlying choices intact. This is useful when a companion’s role is close to what you need but the earlier point spending no longer fits your party.
When the Archetype is the problem
If the reason for rebuilding is specifically the Archetype, the normal Janris Danrok dialogue cannot solve it. You must either keep the existing Archetype and redesign the available level-up choices or consider a modded route that advertises a deeper reset. The latter is outside the vanilla rules and has separate compatibility considerations.

Profit Factor is the game’s trading currency and the payment used for respecialization. The guide describing the service states that each respec costs more Profit Factor than the previous one. Because no dependable current numerical schedule is established, do not rely on a fixed price or an online formula unless it has been verified for your exact game version.
A Fellowship of the Void vendor discount affects the respec cost, according to Owlcat’s notes. Treat that as a discount to the charge shown by the game, not as evidence of a universal free respec.
- Check the displayed cost before confirming the dialogue.
- Keep enough Profit Factor available for the rebuild and your other trading decisions.
- Use a respec for a meaningful correction rather than repeatedly testing minor changes, because the documented cost increases with use.
- Expect the amount to depend on the game’s current rules and any applicable Fellowship of the Void discount.
The absence of a published, reliable price table means the in-game amount is the authoritative figure for your save.

Historical free respecs after major updates
Owlcat has used free respecialization as a migration tool when a major update changed game mechanics. The official Rogue Trader 1.1.28 and 1.2.0.25 patch notes describe a one-time free respecialization ability for party members in existing saves. The ability was intended to help players adapt to the update and lasted until the party gained access to the usual respecialization method.

The 1.1.28 notes state: “Due to the massive changes to the mechanics, all members of the current party in existing saves will receive a special ability, allowing them to perform a one-time free respecialization.” — Owlcat Games, Rogue Trader 1.1.28 Patch Notes.
These notes document update-specific assistance, not a permanent entitlement for every player. A newly created save, a different game version, or a save made after the relevant update may not present the same ability. If your party has such an option, use it as the one-time update accommodation described by the patch notes; otherwise, use Janris Danrok and the normal Profit Factor payment.
Vanilla respec versus the ToyBox level-0 option
ToyBox is a community mod whose listing documents an option to make respec start from level 0 for the player and companions. That is a deeper reset than the documented vanilla behavior. It is not part of the base game, and the available information does not establish a complete current compatibility matrix for every game version or platform.

Choose the vanilla route when you only need to repair level-up choices and want the supported, built-in procedure. Consider ToyBox only when you specifically need a level-0-style rebuild and accept the maintenance and compatibility work associated with a mod.

Using the modded level-0 route safely
The listing for ToyBox identifies the deeper respec feature, but it does not establish that the same steps work unchanged across all releases. Treat the following as a preparation checklist rather than a guaranteed universal menu path.
- Confirm the need for a deeper reset. If changing skills and talents is sufficient, the vanilla service avoids mod-related variables.
- Read the live ToyBox listing. Check the feature description, supported game versions, platform notes, and any installation requirements before downloading.
- Back up your saves. Keep an unmodified copy before enabling a tool that changes character progression.
- Install only the version intended for your game. Compatibility can change after a game patch, and the available information does not provide a permanent version matrix.
- Enable the level-0 respec feature as documented by the current listing. The exact control name and location may change between mod releases.
- Test on a disposable or backed-up save first. Verify that the player and companions rebuild as expected before continuing your main campaign.
- Remove or update the mod only according to its current instructions. Do not assume that disabling a progression mod is harmless in a save that already contains its changes.
ToyBox is digital software, not a separate game mode or official Owlcat service. If the mod does not load, the feature is missing, or a patch has just been released, consult the live listing’s compatibility information rather than assuming the vanilla dialogue is broken.

You chose the wrong talents or skills
Use Janris Danrok. This is exactly the kind of correction covered by the vanilla reset, and it preserves the character’s established Archetype.
You want to rebuild a companion’s role
Use the same flagship dialogue and select that companion. Rework the level-up choices around the companion’s fixed Archetype instead of expecting a new Archetype selection.
You want to start from level 1 or level 0
The vanilla documentation describes a reset of leveling choices, not a complete level-0 character-creation state. ToyBox lists a level-0 option, but it requires checking current mod compatibility.

You are trying to change an Archetype
The ordinary respec cannot do that. Decide whether an Archetype-preserving rebuild is enough; the supplied vanilla rules provide no supported Archetype swap.
You received a free respec after an update
Use it as the one-time update-related ability described in the applicable patch notes. Do not plan a recurring free cycle around it.
You are short on Profit Factor
Delay optional experimentation, inspect the displayed charge, and check whether the Fellowship of the Void discount applies. The documented material does not establish an exact price formula, so the amount shown in your save is the figure to use.
Troubleshooting the respec dialogue
Janris Danrok does not show a respecialization option
- Make sure you are aboard the flagship and speaking with High Factotum Janris Danrok, the documented NPC for the service.
- Check whether you are relying on a historical free-respec ability from a major update rather than the normal dialogue route.
- Confirm that the game has not been altered by a mod that changes progression or conversation behavior.
The displayed cost is higher than expected
The guide says successive respecs cost more Profit Factor. Check the amount shown in the current conversation and whether a Fellowship of the Void vendor discount is active. No fixed universal schedule is established.
A companion still has the same Archetype
That is expected under the vanilla rules. Respec changes level-up skills and talents; companions retain their preselected Archetypes.
The ToyBox option is missing or unstable
Review the live listing’s version and platform notes, restore your backup save if necessary, and test without the mod to separate a compatibility issue from the built-in respec route. The available documentation does not guarantee that one ToyBox release works with every current game build.
