Respec at the Lantern after the Salt Mines and before the mine-cart section’s Sphinx encounter. For the most forgiving setup, reach level 20 or higher, keep Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage strong, equip the Saber with Dominatus II and Volatile End, and carry Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. Use parries to fill the Sphinx’s posture meter, cash in the critical opening, then use a Blunderbuss to shoot its exposed head in phase two. Add a Cleansing Vial if Stasis buildup is repeatedly ending your attempts.
What to change before the Sphinx fight
The Sphinx is a Chapter IV: Dark Descent boss in the Caverns. The encounter follows the Salt Mines and appears after the mine-cart section, so the nearby Lantern is your preparation point. Rest there before entering rather than trying to adjust your build inside the arena.
At any Lantern, you can upgrade skills and respec your character for a small fee. The available guidance does not publish a numeric Catalyst cost, so make sure you have enough currency for the menu’s displayed charge before confirming the reset. A respec changes your skill allocation; it does not replace the need to upgrade or equip the weapons, Ambers and consumables listed below.
The recommended level-20-plus Sphinx loadout
| Slot | Recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Character level | 20 or higher | The Sphinx setup is published as a minimum-level-20-plus recommendation. |
| Primary weapon | Saber | A practical melee option for blocking, parrying and punishing recovery windows. |
| Boss Ambers | Dominatus II and Volatile End | Dominatus converts posture buildup into a powerful critical hit; Volatile End increases damage while a weak point is visible in phase two. |
| Grenades | Hand Grenades and Oil Grenades | They provide ranged damage and fire-support options when a melee approach is unsafe. |
| Firearm ammunition | Special Rounds | Keep a ranged option available for openings and the second phase. |
| Ferrofluid | At least five Ferrofluid Flasks | The published preparation checklist calls for five or more. |
| Secondary firearm | Blunderbuss | Use it to hit the exposed head during phase two. |
| Quick-item safety option | Cleansing Vial | Useful when Stasis buildup is repeatedly interrupting or killing you. |
Dominatus II and Volatile End are the core of the recommendation. Dominatus rewards the patient play this fight demands: build posture with controlled defense, then take the critical attack instead of trading blows. Volatile End matters later, when the Sphinx exposes a weak point. If you are choosing between extra general damage and these boss-specific effects, the two Ambers above are the intended priority for this encounter.

How to respec at the Lantern
- Reach the Lantern near the Sphinx route. The preparation point is after the Salt Mines and around the mine-cart section that leads to the Caverns encounter.
- Rest and open the Lantern’s character or skills menu. The game allows skill upgrades and respecs from Lanterns rather than requiring a separate trainer.
- Select the respec option shown in that menu. Confirm only after checking the displayed fee; the available guide material describes it only as a small fee, not a fixed number.
- Spend the returned points on survivability and defense first. Use the allocation template below if you are using the Saber and do not already have a specialised plan.
- Equip the two boss Ambers. Put on Dominatus II and Volatile End before leaving the Lantern.
- Upgrade and equip your weapons. Set the Saber as your primary weapon and place the Blunderbuss where you can reach it for phase-two head shots.
- Restock consumables. Carry Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and five or more Ferrofluid Flasks. Add a Cleansing Vial if Stasis has been the reason for recent deaths.
Because the respec fee is not specified, avoid repeatedly resetting for one-point experiments at the last minute. Decide whether you are using the general Saber plan or the parry-focused Rapier plan, then make one deliberate allocation.
A dependable skill allocation for a Saber user
The broader level-21 build recommendation provides a useful baseline for this boss. It is not a claim that every player must have exactly level 21; the Sphinx-specific guide sets a minimum of level 20 or higher. Use the following ranks as a priority order when your available points are close to that level.
| Skill | Suggested investment | Purpose in this fight |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Health | 4/4 | Gives you more room to survive a mistimed parry, a jump attack or a Stasis mistake. |
| Maximum Endurance | 4/4 | Supports repeated blocks, dodges and repositioning without exhausting your resource at the wrong moment. |
| Blocking | 4/4 | Makes the block-and-parry plan more forgiving while you learn the three-swipe and tail timings. |
| Melee Damage | 4/4 | Improves Saber punishment during recovery windows and after a posture break. |
| Airborne Aiming | 1/1 | Provides the recommended single rank for handling ranged opportunities while moving or jumping. |
| Headshot Damage | 2/4 | Improves firearm damage against the exposed head in the second phase. |
| Ferrofluid Flask Refill | 1/1 | Supports the five-plus-flask preparation and gives more recovery capacity over repeated attempts. |
This spread keeps the four defensive and melee categories high while retaining enough ranged and resource support to exploit the Sphinx’s openings. If your existing character already has these areas covered, do not strip survivability simply to add a small amount of damage. The fight punishes empty stamina, missed defensive timing and uncontrolled Stasis more severely than it rewards constant aggression.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen a Rapier respec is better
A Rapier plan is viable if you are already comfortable with perfect parries. The published guidance reports that a perfect Rapier parry deals 150 posture damage and that three such parries can fill the Sphinx’s reported 350-point posture pool. Treat those figures as guide data rather than independently verified developer specifications; the practical lesson is that accurate Rapier parries can create a very fast critical opening.
For this version, replace the firearm-oriented investment in Headshot Damage with Parrying Impact, as recommended for a parry-focused Rapier user. Keep Dominatus II equipped: the Rapier’s posture pressure and the Amber’s critical-hit payoff reinforce the same win condition.

Choose the Rapier plan if
- You can consistently recognise the timing of the Sphinx’s blockable swipes.
- You are willing to wait for a clean parry instead of attacking through an uncertain animation.
- You prefer a shorter, more technical fight over the Saber’s larger defensive margin.
Stay with the Saber plan if
- Your parries are inconsistent and you often lose attempts while learning the moveset.
- You need the extra comfort of stronger blocking, endurance and health investment.
- You want to mix melee punishment, grenades and firearm damage without relying on perfect timing.
Understand the Sphinx’s reported numbers
AllThingsHow’s 2026 guide reports the following encounter values. They are useful for planning, but they are guide figures rather than published developer specifications.
| Value | Reported figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 2,000 HP | Plan for several controlled damage cycles instead of expecting one burst to end the fight. |
| Posture pool | 350 | Parries and heavy attacks are a route to the critical opening. |
| Critical attack damage | 300 | Use the critical as soon as the posture break is available rather than saving it while the boss recovers. |
| Perfect Rapier parry | 150 posture damage | Three are reported as enough to fill the posture pool, subject to the guide-data qualification. |
| Stasis gauge | Five segments | Watch the gauge instead of continuing to attack blindly as it fills. |
| Catalyst reward | 20,000 Catalysts | This is the reported reward for defeating the Sphinx. |
Phase one: build posture without forcing damage
The first phase rewards patience. Your objective is to read the attack, defend cleanly and accumulate posture pressure until Dominatus can convert the break into a critical attack.
Three-swipe sequence
Stay close enough to see the claw movement and either block or parry the three-swipe sequence. Do not begin a long attack string while the final swipe is still possible. A successful defense gives you the recovery window for a short Saber punish, a posture-building heavy attack or a controlled application of Fire Transmutation.
Tail sequences
Use the same disciplined approach against the tail attacks: block or parry the attacks you can read, then take only the recovery window you have actually earned. Backing away too early can leave you out of range for a punish; standing in front of the boss and trading damage removes the advantage of the defensive build.
Unblockable jump
Dodge the unblockable jump rather than trying to absorb it with the Saber. Preserve enough Endurance to move, and do not spend your entire resource bar on an attack immediately before the jump is likely.

Crow projectile
Sidestep the crow projectile. The guide’s instruction is to move off its line rather than attempt to block it. After the projectile passes, return to a position where you can read the next melee animation.
Recommended Free Tools
Stasis shockwave
Jump over the purple Stasis shockwave. A ground dodge that leaves you in the wave can add unnecessary buildup, so watch for the pulse and use a clean jump with enough space to land safely.
Fire Transmutation windows
Use Fire Transmutation between melee openings, not during an active claw or tail sequence. Fire is a damage tool that complements the posture plan; it is not a reason to remain in front of the boss while an attack is still live.
Convert the posture break immediately
When the posture meter breaks, trigger the critical attack as soon as the opening appears. Dominatus is selected specifically for this conversion, and the reported critical attack deals 300 damage. Delaying the critical to throw another grenade or begin a long combo risks allowing the Sphinx to recover and wastes the posture work that made the opening possible.
After the critical, reset your position rather than assuming the boss is harmless. Refill your defensive rhythm, watch the Stasis gauge and prepare for the transition into the second phase.

Phase two: exploit the exposed head
Phase two changes the priority from general melee pressure to weak-point damage. When the Sphinx exposes its head, use the Blunderbuss and keep Volatile End active; that Amber increases damage while the weak point is visible.
Head-shot sequence
- Wait for the head to become exposed instead of firing at the body during a protected animation.
- Draw the Blunderbuss and fire into the exposed head.
- Use Special Rounds when that is the ammunition you have prepared for the ranged opening.
- Return to defense immediately after the shot; do not stay planted for a second attack if the weak point closes.
Continue using fire and burn-support consumables where the recovery window is safe. Oil Grenades can support the fire plan, while Hand Grenades give you a way to deal damage without standing in claw range. The goal is repeated, reliable openings rather than one risky burst.
Beam attack
Sidestep the beam. Keep your movement lateral and avoid committing to a slow attack while the beam is active. Once it has passed, reassess the head exposure and your Stasis level before choosing between a shot, a grenade or repositioning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control Stasis before it controls the attempt
The Sphinx has no Stasis resistance according to AllThingsHow, but its Stasis gauge is reported to have five segments. That means Stasis effects can be useful while still creating a serious risk if you let the meter build unchecked.
- Read the gauge: if it is already high, prioritise movement and a safe reset over another attack.
- Jump the purple pulse: the phase-one shockwave is specifically handled by jumping.
- Avoid damage trades: being hit while the gauge is high can turn a recoverable mistake into a death.
- Equip a Cleansing Vial when necessary: put one in your quick items if repeated Stasis buildup, rather than ordinary health loss, is ending attempts.
- Keep Fire Transmutation: it remains the primary damage recommendation even when you add a Cleansing Vial.
Stasis Transmutation is an optional control tool, not a requirement for the recommended build. Use it only if you understand how it affects your own gauge management and can still preserve the fire damage plan.

Consumable and recovery checklist
Before entering the arena
- Restock Hand Grenades.
- Restock Oil Grenades.
- Load Special Rounds.
- Carry at least five Ferrofluid Flasks.
- Add a Cleansing Vial if Stasis buildup has caused recent deaths.
- Confirm that Dominatus II and Volatile End are equipped.
- Verify the Saber or Rapier is upgraded and selected, with the Blunderbuss available for phase two.
During an attempt
- Spend recovery resources after a safe disengagement, not in front of an active combo.
- Use grenades during recovery windows or while creating distance.
- Do not empty every ranged resource in phase one if you still need Blunderbuss shots for exposed heads.
- When Stasis is high, use the Cleansing Vial or reset your position instead of forcing a final hit.
Common respec mistakes and fixes
Putting every point into damage
A pure damage reset leaves you with too little Endurance or Blocking to survive the three-swipe, tail and jump patterns. Move points back into Maximum Health, Maximum Endurance and Blocking before adding marginal damage.
Choosing Volatile End without a ranged plan
Volatile End pays off when a weak point is visible. If you cannot reach the exposed head with a Blunderbuss or another prepared firearm option, make sure you have corrected your weapon and ammunition setup before entering.
Parrying before learning the timing
The Rapier route is powerful only when your perfect parries are reliable. If you are missing several in a row, use the Saber allocation with stronger blocking and take safer punish windows while you learn the animations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring the shockwave
The purple Stasis pulse is not a normal melee hit. Jump it, watch the gauge and avoid continuing an attack string that leaves you grounded in the wave.
Saving the critical opening
The posture break is the reason you invested in Dominatus and parry pressure. Trigger the critical attack promptly, then return to defense instead of trying to extend the opening with an unsafe combo.
A concise decision path
- Need the safest learning setup? Respec toward Health 4/4, Endurance 4/4, Blocking 4/4 and Melee Damage 4/4, then use the Saber.
- Already landing perfect parries? Use the Rapier, shift Headshot Damage into Parrying Impact and use the reported 150-posture parry value to pressure the 350-point pool.
- Stasis is the problem? Keep Fire Transmutation, add a Cleansing Vial and treat the five-segment gauge as a resource you must actively manage.
- Phase two is taking too long? Make sure Volatile End is equipped and use the Blunderbuss on every safe exposed-head window.
The practical win condition is consistent rather than exotic: defend the first phase, build posture, take the Dominatus critical, then combine fire, grenades and exposed-head Blunderbuss shots while sidestepping the beam and controlling Stasis.
