A Prisma Client resolution error in a pnpm monorepo usually points to one of three boundaries: the client was not generated or emitted, the consuming app does not depend on the package that owns it, or that package’s public entry point targets a missing file. First identify the Prisma major version: Prisma 6 and 7 use generated-client workflows, while Prisma’s current Prisma 8 workspace guide uses contract emission. The right repair depends on that distinction and on the exact unresolved import.

Start with versions and the exact failure

Before changing dependencies or exports, record the versions, where the command runs, and the full import path that fails. Prisma’s documented monorepo workflows differ by major version, so applying a generation command from a different workflow can send debugging in the wrong direction.

  • Run pnpm --version and note the result.
  • Check the installed Prisma CLI and client versions in the workspace package manifests and lockfile.
  • Record the command that fails and its working directory.
  • Capture the complete unresolved module path and whether the failure occurs during TypeScript resolution, build, or runtime loading.

The official guides describe version-specific setups but cannot identify a particular repository’s cause without its error and package manifests. Use the checks below to narrow the failure before changing configuration.

Check which workspace package owns Prisma

Choose one package as the clear owner of the schema and Prisma integration. In Prisma 7, that is typically a dedicated database package that contains the schema and generated client. In Prisma 8’s current pnpm guide, the shared package contains the contract, emitted contract artifacts, and runtime client. The consuming app should declare the owner as a workspace dependency and import through that package’s public entry point, rather than reaching into another package’s internal generated files.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Confirm the schema (Prisma 6/7) or contract (Prisma 8 setup) is in the intended shared package.
  • Confirm each consuming app lists that package in its own dependencies, for example "database": "workspace:*".
  • Install workspace dependencies from the workspace root as appropriate for the project’s setup.

See Prisma’s Prisma 7 workspace guide and current Prisma 8 pnpm workspace guide for their respective package structures.

Declare runtime dependencies in the package that uses them

Under pnpm’s isolated dependency layout, code should not depend on a package being available only because some other workspace package or the repository root happens to declare it. Ensure the package whose code imports Prisma runtime modules declares the required direct dependency. Prisma’s current workspace guide says its package resolves direct dependencies without requiring hoisting configuration; do not add hoisting as a default fix for an undeclared dependency.

Prisma 6: configure and verify the generated output

Prisma’s v6 guidance recommends setting a custom generator output path and running prisma generate after schema changes. In a shared package, verify that the configured output is appropriate for that package’s build and exports; do not assume the default node_modules/.prisma/client location will suit a package-level export.

Prisma 7: generate in the schema-owning package

Check the generator’s output directory, confirm generation actually created its files, and make the shared package’s entry module and exports map point to an existing entry point that imports those files. Prisma’s example re-exports the Prisma instance and generated types from the database package. Run pnpm prisma generate in the schema-owning package, and run it again after schema changes. Ensure build or development scripts generate the client before the app needs it.

Prisma documents this package arrangement in its Prisma 7 workspace guide; its client generation guidance explains generation behavior.

Prisma 8: emit the contract rather than expecting a Prisma 7 generated directory

In Prisma’s current Prisma 8 pnpm guide, the shared package contains the contract, emitted contract.json and contract.d.ts artifacts, and runtime client. Follow that guide’s contract-and-client package layout and export the package entry point used by the app. After contract changes, run pnpm prisma contract emit in the package that owns the contract. This documented workflow is not the Prisma 7-style prisma generate step and generated-client directory.

Use the pnpm workaround only for the documented Prisma 8 defect

The current Prisma 8 pnpm guide specifies Node.js 24 or later and pnpm 10.26 or later for its setup. It identifies pnpm 12.0 through 12.4.0 as affected by a CLI-engine link defect and says pnpm 12.4.1 or later fixes that issue. These boundaries apply to the defect described by that guide, not to every unresolved Prisma import.

If the workspace uses the affected range and exhibits that documented setup failure, the guide recommends running pnpm dedupe, then emitting the contract with pnpm prisma contract emit. Do not treat deduplication as a general-purpose fix when the installed pnpm version or error does not match.

Check ESM format when the error is a module-loading failure

If Prisma 8 fails while loading generated JSON in Node’s ESM loader, inspect the importing package’s module format. The guide’s JSON import uses an import attribute and expects the package to use "type": "module"; it says to change a CommonJS package to module format for that setup. This is relevant to ESM loading errors, not a general remedy for TypeScript path resolution or missing files.

Trace the import from app to file

  1. Open the consuming app’s manifest and confirm it declares the database workspace package.
  2. Open the shared package manifest and inspect its exports map and entry-point paths.
  3. Follow the exported path to confirm the target file exists after the matching generate or contract-emission command.
  4. Inspect the entry module’s imports and re-exports for paths that match the actual output directory and module format.
  5. Run the relevant command from the schema- or contract-owning package, then retry the original failing command.

If the export targets a nonexistent file, fix the output/export alignment. If the file exists but the app cannot resolve the package, verify its workspace dependency and package entry point. If the failure concerns runtime ESM loading, check module format. These checks distinguish package-boundary problems from generation or emission problems without assuming one cause in advance.
