Start by determining whether the failure is limited to one app or affects the entire Android device. Restart, install available Android and app updates, and check storage before attempting anything that can erase data. If the phone still freezes, restarts, or runs slowly, use safe mode as a diagnostic test: it temporarily disables downloaded apps and shows whether one of them is involved.
Do not begin with a factory reset. Clearing app data and resetting the phone can remove information, and a Google Account restore may not bring back every app or its associated data. The sequence below moves from reversible checks to higher-risk actions and includes separate branches for connectivity, charging, and startup symptoms.
First decide what is actually failing
The symptom’s scope determines the safest troubleshooting path. A single app that crashes or will not open usually needs app-level steps. A phone that freezes, restarts, or becomes slow requires device-level checks and a safe-mode test. If several online services fail together, investigate the connection before treating an individual app as defective.

| What you observe | Start here | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app crashes, will not open, or stops responding | Use the app sequence in this guide, restarting after each step | If every other app works, the app or its data is the likely scope; contact its developer if the problem remains |
| The whole phone freezes, restarts, or is persistently slow | Check storage and updates, then test in safe mode | If the fault disappears in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely involved |
| Multiple apps cannot reach online services | Compare Wi‑Fi with mobile data | A difference between the two points toward a network path rather than one app |
| The device will not charge or turn on | Follow power and startup checks | The cause may be the outlet, adapter, cable, port, display, or hardware rather than Android software |
Android settings are not identical across manufacturers or Android versions. The menu paths below are examples; if a label is different, use your device maker’s equivalent setting or support instructions.

Use the least-destructive checks first
These actions are reversible and establish a baseline. Record what changed after each one instead of performing several changes at once.
- Restart the device. A restart closes processes that may be stuck and gives you a clear point for comparison. Google’s app and device guidance recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step.
- Install Android updates. Open Settings and look for System, Software update, or a similarly named option. Download and install any offered update, then restart.
- Update apps. In the Play Store, open your profile menu and choose Manage apps & device, then install available updates. A menu label can vary by Play Store version.
- Check free storage. In Settings, look for Storage. Google Android Help states: “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” Treat this as Google’s troubleshooting threshold, not a universal engineering law. Remove or move material you no longer need, then restart and test again.
Do not clear app data or reset the phone merely because storage is low. First identify large downloads, videos, or unused apps and preserve anything you still need.
Fix one app that crashes or will not open
Use this sequence when the rest of the phone behaves normally. Test the app after every step; if it starts working, stop rather than making additional changes.
1. Restart, then update both layers
Restart the phone. Check for an Android update and then an update for the affected app. An app compiled for a newer Android release, or an Android component that is behind, can fail before the app’s own settings are involved. Follow the update paths in the previous section and restart again after installing updates.
2. Force stop the app
Open Settings and choose Apps, Apps & notifications, or the equivalent list. Select the affected app, choose Force stop, confirm, and open it again. This ends the app’s current process without deleting its stored information.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
3. Clear only the cache
On the app’s information screen, open Storage or Storage & cache, then choose Clear cache. Google describes this as freeing space temporarily; cached data can build up again, so it is not a permanent repair guarantee. Reopen the app after clearing it. The exact labels and location vary by device.
4. Consider clearing app data only when you accept the consequence
Clear storage, Clear data, or an equivalent command removes information held by that app. It may sign you out, delete downloaded content, reset preferences, or erase data that the app has not synchronized. Confirm that you know how to sign back in and that important information is stored elsewhere before using it. If you proceed, clear the data, restart the phone, and test the app as a fresh installation.

Uninstall the app, restart the phone, and install it again from the Play Store. Reinstallation can replace damaged program files, but it does not guarantee recovery of unsynchronized app data. Do not remove a system app or a work-managed app unless the device administrator’s instructions allow it.
6. Escalate to the right support channel
If one app remains the only failure after these steps, contact that app’s developer with the phone model, Android version, app version, exact error, and the steps that reproduce it. Google directs problems involving Google apps or Play updates to its Android app troubleshooting guidance and the appropriate Google Play support channel. A developer can know about an outage or account-specific defect that local cache changes cannot fix.
Diagnose a phone that freezes, restarts, or runs slowly
When the symptom affects the interface, several apps, or the entire device, use device-level checks before deleting anything.

Check storage against Google’s 10% warning
Open Settings > Storage (or the manufacturer’s equivalent). If less than 10% is free, the condition matches Google’s warning that the phone can start having issues. Remove unneeded files, uninstall apps you no longer use, and clear large offline downloads. Keep personal files you may need; do not treat a factory reset as a storage-cleanup shortcut.
Install system and app updates
Install available Android updates, update apps in the Play Store, restart, and observe whether the same freeze or restart returns. If the device cannot stay on long enough to complete an update, note that fact and move to safe-mode testing or manufacturer support rather than repeatedly interrupting the update.
Use safe mode as a controlled diagnostic test
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. It is not a repair by itself, and the entry method differs by manufacturer and model. Follow the device maker’s instructions for entering safe mode; the phone normally displays a safe-mode indication when the test is active.
- Back out of any unsaved work, then enter safe mode using the manufacturer’s documented procedure.
- Use the phone long enough to reproduce the freeze, restart, or slowdown. Test the same screen or action that normally fails.
- If the problem disappears, return to normal mode and remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restart and test after each removal.
- If the problem remains in safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Keep the apps installed for now and proceed to support or carefully considered reset guidance.
Removing several apps simultaneously destroys the diagnostic trail. Work backward from the time the problem began and test one recent installation at a time. A problem that returns only after normal mode is restored strengthens the case for a downloaded app, while a problem that also occurs in safe mode points to another cause.
For the official safe-mode explanation and manufacturer-dependent instructions, see Google’s Android safe-mode guide. Google’s device guidance also covers freezing and non-response at this support page, and restarting or crashing at this page.

Know when a software diagnosis should stop
Persistent failure after updates, storage cleanup, and a safe-mode test is a reason to involve the manufacturer or an authorized service channel. Gather the phone model, Android version, available storage, when the symptom started, whether it occurs in safe mode, and any error message. This information prevents support from sending you back through steps you have already completed.
Do not install an unverified “cleaner” or diagnostic app to solve a system-wide problem. The built-in settings and official support paths provide the relevant tests here; adding another app can introduce a new variable, consume storage, or request unnecessary permissions.
Factory reset is a last resort, not a first fix
A factory reset removes phone data and apps. Use it only after reversible checks and safe-mode diagnosis, and only when you accept that some information may not return.
- Back up first. Copy or synchronize photos, contacts, documents, messages, and any app data you cannot replace. Verify that the backup completed rather than assuming that every app participates.
- Check what restoration can and cannot do. Google warns that restoring from a Google Account does not reinstall all apps or their associated data. Data stored only inside an app may therefore be lost even when the account restore succeeds.
- Record the evidence. Note the symptoms, safe-mode result, updates attempted, and storage condition. If the reset does not help, this record is useful to the manufacturer.
- Start the reset from the phone’s official settings. The path commonly appears under Settings > System > Reset options, but manufacturers use different labels. Follow the device maker’s current instructions and read the final confirmation screen carefully.
- After the reset, test before restoring everything. Complete the minimum setup, install updates, and check whether the original fault returns before adding all apps. If the clean device works and the fault returns after a particular app is restored, that app becomes a strong suspect.
Google’s warnings about data removal and incomplete app-data restoration are covered in its freezing-device guidance and restarting-and-crashing guidance. If you cannot make a reliable backup, pause and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel before resetting.

Separate internet problems from app defects
An app that needs an internet connection may appear broken when the network path is the real problem. First restart the phone and test the same service on Wi‑Fi and mobile data.

- Works on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi: investigate the Wi‑Fi network, router, or its internet connection. Other devices on the same network can help confirm the scope.
- Works on Wi‑Fi but not mobile data: investigate mobile coverage, the selected network, or the device’s mobile-data settings.
- Fails on both: check whether several services fail, install pending updates when possible, and contact the app developer if only that app is affected.
This comparison does not prove the cause, but it prevents you from repeatedly clearing data in an app that cannot reach its server. Google’s connection steps are available at Fix internet connection problems on Android devices.
Handle charging and power symptoms as a separate branch
A phone that will not charge or turn on may not have a software fault. Check the outlet, adapter, cable, and charging port, and try a compatible cable and charger. Look for debris or visible damage without forcing anything into the port.
If the phone rings or vibrates while the screen remains blank, the display may be the failing component. That symptom needs an authorized repair channel rather than repeated app troubleshooting. Google’s separate checklist is Fix an Android device that won’t charge or turn on.

Choose the next action by risk and diagnostic value
| Action | Reversibility | Data-loss risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | Fully reversible | None for saved data | Clears a transient stuck process and establishes a test point |
| Android or app update | Usually reversible only through manufacturer-specific procedures | Normally low, but back up important data | Corrects known compatibility or stability defects |
| Force stop | Reversible when the app is opened again | None for stored app data | Ends a hung app process |
| Clear cache | Reversible only as the cache rebuilds | Low; cached files are temporary | Removes temporary app files; not a guaranteed permanent fix |
| Clear app data | Not reliably reversible | Can erase sign-in state, settings, downloads, and unsynchronized data | Reinitializes one app after backup or confirmation |
| Remove recent apps after safe-mode testing | Reinstallable, but app data may not return | Depends on the app’s synchronization | Finds a downloaded app linked to a system-wide symptom |
| Factory reset | Not reversible | High; removes phone data and apps | Last resort after backup, diagnosis, and support consideration |
A compact decision procedure
- Ask whether one app fails or the whole device fails.
- Restart, update Android and apps, and check storage.
- For one app, force stop, clear cache, then consider data clearing or reinstalling with the stated risks.
- For whole-device symptoms, test in safe mode and remove recent downloaded apps individually only if the symptom disappears there.
- For online failures, compare Wi‑Fi and mobile data before changing app data.
- For no-charge or no-power symptoms, check the power path and screen behavior instead of treating it as an app problem.
- Back up before any factory reset, and remember that account restoration may not recover every app or its associated data.
- If the fault persists after these checks, provide the manufacturer or app developer with the exact symptom, timing, device details, and test results.
This order preserves the most information while the risk is lowest: reversible checks first, a diagnostic safe-mode comparison next, and destructive reset actions only when the evidence and backup justify them.
