To resize an image, first check the pixel dimensions required by its destination, then enter the target width or height while preserving the image’s proportions. Save the resized version as a separate copy. If you need a particular print size, adjust print resolution as well—but remember that resampling changes pixel data and cannot reliably add detail to a small original.
Choose the right kind of resize
Image width and height in pixels describe how much pixel data a picture contains. The destination matters: a website, social post, upload form, or printer may specify its own requirements. Use those requirements when available rather than relying on a generic size.
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. Keep it locked to avoid stretching. If the target frame has a different ratio, you must choose between leaving space, cropping part of the image, or distorting it. Microsoft’s PowerToys Image Resizer labels these choices Fit, Fill, and Stretch: Fit preserves the whole image without cropping, Fill crops as needed, and Stretch changes proportions to fill the target. Resampling changes the number of pixels and therefore the image data. Adobe cautions that resampling can degrade quality to some extent, particularly when enlarging an image with limited source detail. It is safer to retain the original and export a resized copy than to overwrite your only version. Adobe’s Photoshop resizing guide describes the relationship between image size and resampling.

Resize images on a Mac with Preview
- Open the image in Preview.
- Choose Tools > Adjust Size.
- Enter the desired width and height, or choose a fit size. Keep Scale proportionally enabled unless you intentionally want to change the image’s proportions.
- Consider the Resample image control. Whether pixel data changes depends on this setting and the change you are making; do not treat disabling it as a general guarantee of unchanged visual quality for every output.
- Save a separate resized copy so the original remains available.
Preview can resize multiple images together: open them in the same window, select the images in the sidebar, and choose Tools > Adjust Size. See Apple’s Preview instructions.
Resize a batch in Windows with PowerToys
- Install Microsoft PowerToys.
- In File Explorer, select one or more image files, right-click, and choose Resize with Image Resizer.
- Choose or configure a size preset. PowerToys supports pixels, percentages, inches, and centimeters; leaving one dimension empty lets it calculate the other proportionally.
- Choose the fit behavior deliberately: Fit keeps the whole image, Fill crops to fill the target, and Stretch fills the target by changing proportions.
- Apply the resize and check the resulting files before using them.
PowerToys Image Resizer is a File Explorer shell extension intended for resizing selected files, including in bulk. Details are in Microsoft’s documentation.

Use Photoshop for pixel and print controls
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size.
- Enter the target dimensions and units. Keep the constrain-aspect-ratio control enabled when you want proportional scaling.
- Set the resolution if the physical print size is part of the job. Turn on Resample when you need to change the pixel count; changing resolution without resampling changes the represented physical print size, not the amount of image detail.
- Review the resulting dimensions and save a separate copy.
Adobe’s guide gives 72–96 PPI as typical guidance for screen or web use and 300 PPI for print quality. These are general recommendations, not universal requirements: follow the receiving service’s pixel specifications or the printer’s actual instructions when provided. Pixel dimensions and print resolution describe different things. Pixel dimensions are the image’s width and height in pixels. Resolution, commonly expressed as pixels per inch (PPI), relates those pixels to a physical print size. If you change PPI without resampling, the same pixel data is assigned to a different physical size. If you resample, the pixel count changes. Neither operation can recover fine detail that was absent from the source image. Adobe provides an explanation of this relationship in its Photoshop image-resizing guide.

Check the result before using it
- Confirm the output’s pixel dimensions match the destination’s requirements.
- Check that the subject is not unexpectedly cropped or stretched.
- Inspect the image at the size it will be displayed or printed, especially if you enlarged it.
- Keep an untouched original. Resizing does not guarantee a smaller file: format, image content, pixel count, and encoding settings all affect file size.
