To turn a horizontal video ad into a vertical ad without losing its message, create a sequence for the exact destination, change the canvas to that placement’s required ratio, and then reframe every shot so the product, people, text, and action stay visible. Automatic subject tracking is a useful first pass, not a finished edit. Watch the complete result, correct the framing with position, scale, rotation, and keyframes, keep essential information inside the placement’s safe area, and check the exported file in the platform’s own preview before publishing.
“Vertical” is not one universal specification. Google Ads and TikTok use different minimums and provide placement-specific safe-zone guidance. The campaign type, caption length, interactive add-ons, and device interface can all change the usable area. The workflow below treats those requirements as the starting point rather than forcing one crop onto every platform.
Choose the destination before you touch the crop
The ad’s destination determines the sequence shape, output dimensions, and the area in which text and calls to action can safely appear. Identify the platform, the paid placement, and any format-specific feature such as captions, buttons, stickers, or other interactive add-ons. A feed ad and a full-screen placement may both appear on a phone but expose different portions of the image to interface controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Current vertical specifications to use as starting points
| Destination or guidance | Recommended vertical format | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads, recommended 1080p vertical output | 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 pixels | Google also lists 16:9 at 1920 × 1080 and 1:1 at 1080 × 1080. A 4:5 vertical ratio is listed as an accepted alternative. These are Google Ads specifications, not universal rules for every service. |
| TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads | 9:16 at 540 × 960 pixels or higher | Horizontal 16:9 and square 1:1 are also supported. The recommended vertical minimum applies to this ad placement. |
| TikTok for Business creative guidance | 9:16, at least 720p | This is a creative starting point. TikTok recommends staying within the interface safe zone and testing because results vary by campaign. |
Requirements can change, so check the current specification for the actual campaign immediately before export. In particular, do not assume that a 1080 × 1920 file is automatically correct for every TikTok or Google placement, or that an accepted ratio is the preferred one.

Resizing and reframing solve different problems
Resizing changes the sequence or output canvas. It tells the editor whether the finished frame is 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, or another supported shape. When you change a 1920 × 1080 sequence to a 1080 × 1920 sequence, you create a tall window with a much narrower horizontal field of view.
Reframing decides what part of the original image appears inside that new window. A crop can remove people at the edge of a group, a product held to one side, a logo, or text that was designed for a wide frame. Reframing is therefore a shot-by-shot composition task, not simply a resize command. The same source clip may need different horizontal positions at different moments.
Preserve the original edit and create a duplicate sequence for each materially different destination. This lets you return to the wide composition, compare versions, and make a platform-specific change without damaging the master.

Prepare the project for a controlled vertical conversion
- Record the delivery target. Write down the platform, paid placement, ratio, pixel dimensions, minimum quality, caption treatment, and any add-ons that will appear over the ad.
- Download the matching safe-zone file. Use the platform’s template for the placement and dimensions you selected. Keep it available as an overlay while you edit; do not substitute a generic “top and bottom percentage” guide.
- Duplicate the edit. Preserve the original sequence, audio, captions, graphics, and timing. Name the copy for its destination, such as a vertical feed version, so it cannot be confused with the master.
- Set the target canvas. For a common full-height vertical delivery, start with 9:16, then enter the exact pixel dimensions required by the destination. If the placement specifies 540 × 960, 1080 × 1920, 4:5, or another size, use that requirement instead.
- Check every graphic. A title, logo, lower third, legal line, or end card designed for a wide frame may be too small or too close to an edge after the canvas changes. Plan to reposition or rebuild graphics rather than merely scaling the entire layer.
Use automatic reframing as a first pass in Premiere Pro
Adobe Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can create a starting composition for a clip or a complete sequence and target vertical, square, or other ratios. It is most useful when the footage has a clear subject and the editor then inspects the result manually.

- Select the sequence or clips. For a complete edit, select the sequence in the project or timeline. For a partial conversion, select the clips that need the new framing.
- Open Auto Reframe. Use the sequence or clip command labeled Auto Reframe Sequence and choose the target aspect ratio, such as 9:16. Premiere creates a reframed version rather than changing the original sequence.
- Choose the motion setting that fits the footage. A moving subject, a mostly static product shot, and a fast pan do not have the same tracking needs. Treat the generated result as a draft; the setting cannot understand every editorial priority.
- Play the entire cut. Do not judge only the first frame or the crop boundary. Watch entrances, exits, camera moves, transitions, product demonstrations, text cards, and the final call to action.
- Refine position, scale, and rotation. Select the affected clip and adjust its controls so the subject and required information sit inside the new frame. If a camera angle changes, correct the composition rather than accepting a drift toward an edge.
- Add keyframes where the focal point changes. Keyframes let the crop follow a person, product, or action as it moves. Add only the changes needed to keep important content visible; excessive keyframes can create distracting, jerky motion.
- Repeat the inspection after graphics are added. A crop that works for the picture may still hide a logo, subtitle, price, disclaimer, or button graphic. Treat text and branding as part of the composition.
Adobe’s documented workflow includes manual refinement with position, scale, rotation, and keyframes. Those controls are the difference between an automatic crop that is merely centered and a vertical ad that preserves the intended story.
Reframe each type of content deliberately
People and faces
Keep the speaking person’s face and the gesture or object they are discussing in the same frame whenever the shot requires both. A centered face is not always the right choice: if the person looks or points to one side, leave enough room in that direction for the action. For a group shot, decide whether the message depends on everyone being visible. If it does, reduce scale or choose a different source shot instead of cutting people out.
Products and demonstrations
Follow the item that proves the ad’s claim, not just the largest object in the frame. A hand opening packaging, a device screen, a before-and-after area, or a control being pressed may be the critical detail. Use keyframes when the product travels across the frame, and verify that it remains large enough to identify on a phone.
Logos, labels, and legal text
Keep logos and required disclosures away from edges and interface controls. If a wide end card contains several lines, rebuild it for the narrow canvas: increase legibility, shorten wording only when legally permitted, and give each line enough contrast and duration. Never let a crop silently remove a qualification or disclaimer.

Captions and calls to action
Captions can expand or change the usable area. A long caption block may cover more of the lower frame than a short one, while a button or interactive add-on can occupy a different position altogether. Place the creative’s own text and call to action where the placement template shows clear space, then verify the combination in the platform preview.
Safe zones are placement-specific, not a universal percentage
Interface overlays, calls to action, and buttons can occupy different areas depending on the ad format, campaign, screen, and device presentation. Google Ads supplies safe-zone references and warns that overlays vary by format, campaign type, and screen. TikTok explains that its safe-zone size changes with the creative dimensions, caption length, and interactive add-ons.
Use the template that matches the exact placement and dimensions. Keep the following inside its clear area:
- Brand name and logo that must be seen for recognition.
- Product name, model, price, offer terms, and other decision-making details.
- Spoken-message captions and any legal or regulatory text.
- The action the viewer must take, including a call to action or destination cue.
- Visual evidence of the claim, such as a product screen or result in a demonstration.
Do not apply a single “safe top” or “safe bottom” rule to all vertical ads. A file can pass a generic crop check and still have its key line covered by a placement control. Preview the ad with the actual caption length and add-ons you expect to use.

Inspect the complete sequence, not just the crop boundary
A vertical conversion can fail in a transition, a fast pan, or the final seconds even when its opening shot looks correct. Use a full-sequence review with the safe-zone overlay visible, then a second review without guides to judge the ad as a viewer will see it.
- Faces: Check that eyes and mouths are not cut off and that a speaker does not leave the frame during a sentence.
- Products: Confirm that the item, relevant screen, label, and demonstration action remain identifiable.
- Text: Read every caption, headline, legal line, URL, price, and offer condition at the intended phone size.
- Branding: Make sure logos are not clipped, distorted, or hidden behind interface elements.
- Motion: Watch keyframed crops for sudden jumps, late corrections, or a subject that exits the frame.
- Transitions: Check wipes, split screens, zooms, and animated graphics because their visual focus may change faster than the tracker.
- Calls to action: Verify that the creative’s CTA remains visible when the platform adds its own button or label.
- Audio and timing: Reframing should not alter the edit’s speech, music, sound effects, or the timing of the final action.
Export for the selected placement
Export using the destination’s current dimensions and quality requirements, not whatever dimensions the source happened to use. For Google’s recommended 1080p vertical output, that means 1080 × 1920 at 9:16. For TikTok Auction In-Feed’s recommended vertical delivery, use 540 × 960 pixels or higher at 9:16; TikTok’s broader creative guidance calls for at least 720p. If a specific campaign requests another size or ratio, that campaign requirement controls.
- Confirm the sequence frame size and aspect ratio before opening the export dialog.
- Match the export frame dimensions to the placement specification and keep the image orientation vertical.
- Review scaling and cropping options so the encoder does not add an unintended letterbox, pillarbox, or second crop.
- Export a review file, then open it independently from the editing timeline. A graphic or keyframe problem can be hidden by an editor overlay.
- Upload the file to the platform’s preview tool with the intended caption, button, and add-ons. Inspect more than one device presentation when the platform offers that option.
- Only publish after the preview confirms that the critical content is both visible and legible.
Common failures and how to correct them
The automatic crop follows the wrong object
When a frame contains a person, a product, and a bright background element, tracking may favor the wrong visual feature. Override the crop with manual position and scale controls. Add keyframes around the moment the intended subject becomes important, and review the preceding and following frames for a smooth handoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe subject is visible at the start but disappears later
The crop is static or its tracking has drifted. Scrub through the whole shot, set keyframes before and after the movement, and adjust the path so the subject stays inside the frame. Leave enough margin for natural motion rather than placing the face or product against the edge.

Text is technically inside the frame but covered in the preview
The safe-zone guide does not match the actual placement, or the caption and add-on combination is larger than expected. Download the current placement template, move the text into its clear area, and test the exact caption length and interactive elements in the platform preview.
The vertical version feels empty or overly zoomed
A wide shot may not contain enough central detail for a narrow crop. Try a smaller scale if the subject remains readable, use a different source shot, or rebuild the composition with a background treatment that does not hide essential information. Do not zoom solely to fill the canvas if it removes the evidence or context that makes the ad understandable.
A legal line becomes unreadable
Rebuild the graphic for the vertical canvas instead of shrinking the entire wide card. Increase type size and contrast, allow sufficient on-screen duration, and obtain approval for any wording change. If the required text cannot be both complete and legible, the shot or edit needs to change before export.

The exported file has bars or an unexpected second crop
Check that the sequence ratio, clip scaling mode, and export dimensions agree. Look for a “fit” or “fill” setting applied at the clip level and for an export preset that uses the source frame size. Re-export after confirming the file’s pixel dimensions and orientation in a media inspector.
When automatic and manual workflows make sense
| Workflow | Best use | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic reframing only | A rough proof when shots have a single, obvious subject and no important edge content. | Subject identity, movement, text visibility, and the full sequence. It is not a publish-ready review method by itself. |
| Automatic first pass plus manual correction | Most edits with moving people or products, because tracking saves setup time while keyframes handle exceptions. | Position, scale, rotation, timing, safe-zone overlap, and every transition. |
| Manual reframing from the start | Shots with several competing subjects, precise product details, dense legal text, or complex motion. | Shot-by-shot composition and a consistent visual path. This takes longer but gives direct control over the focal point. |
The relevant comparison is not which tool claims to be automatic. It is whether the workflow can set the required ratio and still permit precise corrections over time. No comparative performance benchmark is established here for competing editors, so choose the tool that gives your team reliable access to those controls and a repeatable preview process.
Worked example: converting a 16:9 ad to a full-height vertical version
Suppose the master is a 1920 × 1080 ad in which a presenter stands on the left, a product demonstration occurs on the right, and a wide end card contains the logo, offer, and disclaimer. A 9:16 conversion cannot show the full width at the original scale. Treat each section separately:
- Presenter shot: Set the vertical sequence, place the presenter’s face and the direction of the gesture in frame, and keyframe the crop if the presenter walks.
- Demonstration: Shift the crop toward the product and its screen when the proof begins. If the presenter remains relevant, use a wider scale or a cut that shows both rather than sacrificing the screen.
- End card: Rebuild the graphic for the tall canvas. Put the logo, offer, disclaimer, and CTA in the placement’s safe area; do not use the wide card as a single scaled layer if its text becomes too small.
- Preview: Upload the export with the intended caption and interactive elements. Check that the platform controls do not cover the rebuilt end card.
This approach preserves the ad’s information hierarchy while accepting that the vertical version may need different framing, graphics, and even shot choices from the horizontal master.
