Prepare a wallpaper at the pixel dimensions and aspect ratio of the desktop area where it will be shown, then decide explicitly whether to crop, pad, or stretch when the artwork and display do not match. Export a raster file, apply it in the target desktop, and inspect the result using that desktop’s own positioning mode. There is no single Linux-wide wallpaper size: the correct canvas is determined by the display or combined desktop layout you intend to cover.
1. Start with the desktop area you actually need to cover
Wallpaper preparation begins with the screen geometry, not with a standard Linux preset. Check the active display’s pixel resolution and orientation in the system’s display settings. Record the width and height as a pair, such as 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440, and note whether the desktop is landscape or portrait. Raster artwork should be designed and exported in pixels so the file maps predictably to that rectangle.
Single display
Use the width and height of the display that will show the image. Keep the same aspect ratio in the artwork when possible; a 16:9 canvas is a natural match for a 16:9 display, while a 16:10, 4:3, or portrait display requires a different composition if you want to avoid cropping or empty margins.
Multiple displays
Decide first whether one image should span the whole desktop or whether each monitor should receive its own image. For a spanning layout, establish the combined arrangement and total canvas before exporting. GNOME documents a “spanned” rendering choice, but the cited documentation does not define every multi-monitor geometry edge case, such as monitors with different resolutions, scaling factors, or offsets. Treat the combined dimensions as a layout-specific target and verify the result on the actual desktop.

Allow for desktop scaling and panels
The wallpaper normally sits behind panels, docks, icons, and windows. Those interface elements do not change the image file’s pixel dimensions, but they can hide important details. Keep a focal subject away from extreme edges when the image may later be zoomed or cropped. This is a composition safeguard rather than a guarantee about how every desktop will render an image.
2. Calculate the target aspect ratio
Divide the target width by its height to obtain the display ratio. Compare that value with the artwork’s ratio. If they are equal, an aspect-preserving resize can fill the canvas without cutting edges or adding a border. If they differ, no resize operation can simultaneously fill every target pixel, preserve the artwork’s proportions, and retain every original edge. You must choose which property matters most.

For a planned crop, mark a safe area around faces, text, logos, or other subjects before exporting. A desktop’s zoom or crop behavior can remove more edge content than a static editor preview suggests.

Crop to fill the canvas
Crop-to-fill preserves the artwork’s proportions and fills every pixel of the target rectangle. The cost is lost edge content. The crop can be aligned to the center or biased toward a focal area. ImageMagick’s ratio-based geometry and gravity controls provide a command-line way to express both the crop size and its placement.
- Use this when a full-bleed image is more important than retaining every edge.
- Place important subjects inside the area that will remain after the crop.
- Check both the exported file and the desktop’s own zoom or crop mode.
Fit and pad
Fit-and-pad scales the entire artwork until it fits within the target rectangle, then fills the unused area with a background color. ImageMagick documents this approach by resizing to fit, centering the result on a black canvas, and extending the canvas to the target dimensions. You can select a color that belongs in the composition instead of black.
- Use this when no original edge may be lost, such as with diagrams, posters, or artwork containing edge-to-edge text.
- Choose a background color that does not create a distracting frame around the image.
- Check whether the desktop’s positioning mode adds another fit or crop after your padding.
Stretch to the rectangle
Stretching independently changes the artwork’s proportions. Circles become ovals and people or buildings can look unnaturally wide or narrow. GNOME lists “stretched” as a rendering mode, so this may be available as a desktop presentation choice, but it should be selected only when distortion is acceptable or deliberately desired.

4. Resize and export from an editor-neutral workflow
The title does not specify an editor, so the safest graphical workflow is expressed in operations rather than application-specific menu names. Work on a copy of the original layered artwork. Set the document or export canvas to the target pixel dimensions, choose an aspect-ratio-preserving scale for the artwork, and then implement the crop or padding decision. If the editor offers separate image-size and canvas-size controls, use image size for proportional scaling and canvas size for the final rectangle.

- Set the target rectangle. Enter the display width and height in pixels. Do not substitute a generic “Linux wallpaper” size.
- Resolve the ratio. Select crop-to-fill, fit-and-pad, or stretch according to the composition and the table above.
- Position the composition. Center it or move the crop toward the focal subject. Keep important details inside the safe area.
- Inspect at 100 percent. Look for clipped text, halos at the crop boundary, unexpected transparency, and resampling artifacts.
- Export a new raster file. Use the editor’s export command rather than overwriting the source document. Record the pixel dimensions in the file’s properties.
- Apply it on the target desktop. Select a positioning mode, then inspect the live desktop rather than relying only on the editor preview.
If you need several monitor targets, repeat the process from the preserved source for each canvas. Do not repeatedly resize an already-resized export; each additional resampling step can alter fine details.
5. A documented ImageMagick command-line example
ImageMagick’s command-line documentation gives this pattern for fitting a JPEG to an 800 × 600 display, centering it on a black fixed canvas, and writing a JPEG with quality set to 92:
magick input.jpg -resize 800x600 -background black -compose Copy -gravity center -extent 800x600 -quality 92 output.jpgThe command’s documented intent is fit-and-pad: -resize 800x600 scales the image to fit within the requested geometry while preserving its ratio; -background black supplies the canvas color; -gravity center centers the fitted image; and -extent 800x600 makes the final canvas exactly 800 × 600. The example’s dimensions and quality value are documentation values, not universal wallpaper recommendations.
Adapt the command to another target
Replace both occurrences of 800x600 with the intended width and height, change the background color if needed, and choose an output extension that matches the format you have decided to use. For example, a 2560 × 1440 fit-and-pad operation would use 2560x1440 in both places. Confirm the command syntax against the ImageMagick version installed on your Linux system before using it in a script.

ImageMagick also documents ratio-based geometry with gravity controls for cropping. In that workflow, the geometry describes the desired relationship between the image and target, while gravity determines which area is favored when content must be removed. Center gravity is a neutral starting point; use another placement when the subject is intentionally off-center. Test the result on a copy and inspect the final dimensions.

Limit operations with > and <
The documented geometry modifiers > and < limit an operation to images larger or smaller than the specified target, respectively. They are useful in batch workflows where some source files already meet the target constraint. Because option parsing and behavior can vary by installed ImageMagick version, verify the exact syntax locally and check the output dimensions after processing.
Check the result from the shell
After conversion, inspect the output file’s reported width and height with the image-information tools available on your system. The final file should match the target canvas when your workflow requires an exact fixed rectangle. If the dimensions are correct but the subject is misplaced, adjust gravity, crop coordinates, or the source composition rather than stretching the image.
6. Decide what export format and quality setting mean here
The available evidence does not establish a wallpaper-specific winner between PNG and JPEG, nor a universal quality number. Choose a format that your desktop can open and that suits the artwork and your storage or delivery requirements. ImageMagick’s example writes JPEG and sets -quality 92; that demonstrates the command’s option, not a rule that every wallpaper should use 92.
- Keep the original project file separately from the exported wallpaper.
- Use the export format’s own options deliberately instead of accepting an accidental default.
- After export, reopen the file and check dimensions, orientation, color appearance, and any visible compression or transparency behavior.
- If a desktop refuses to display the file, export a conventional raster variant and test that file before troubleshooting the wallpaper settings.
Do not infer a format recommendation from the fact that one command-line example uses JPEG. That example documents a fit-and-pad operation and a quality parameter, not a cross-format comparison.
7. Apply and preview the wallpaper in GNOME
Use Appearance
GNOME Help describes opening the desktop’s Appearance settings and choosing Add Picture… to select a custom image. The same documentation describes setting an image from Files or Image Viewer with a Set as Background action. Use whichever route is available in your GNOME release.
Understand the positioning choices
GNOME documentation lists rendering values including none, wallpaper, centered, scaled, stretched, zoom, and spanned. The visible labels and exact behavior can depend on the GNOME version and settings interface. Select the mode that matches the preparation decision:
- Centered: keeps the image centered without necessarily filling the display.
- Scaled: resizes the image to the available area while attempting to preserve its proportions.
- Stretched: fills the area by allowing proportions to change.
- Zoom: fills the area by enlarging and potentially cropping edges.
- Spanned: treats the wallpaper as spanning the desktop layout; verify each monitor in a multi-display setup.
- None or wallpaper: these documented values may be exposed by configuration even when a particular graphical panel presents different wording.
Preview the live desktop with the chosen mode. Check the top, bottom, and side edges, then move or hide panels if necessary to see whether important content is obscured. If the desktop crops a subject that looked safe in the editor, return to the source and reposition the composition or export a padded version.

8. Apply and preview the wallpaper in KDE Plasma
The KDE Plasma Handbook shows an image wallpaper configuration with Wallpaper Type: Image and a Positioning: Scaled control. Open the wallpaper configuration for the relevant desktop or monitor, choose the image type, select the exported file, and set the positioning control. The exact dialog arrangement can vary with Plasma releases and whether you are configuring one screen or a combined desktop.
After applying the image, inspect it at the actual desktop size. “Scaled” in the wallpaper dialog is not a substitute for checking the final crop: the source ratio, target ratio, panel placement, and monitor arrangement all affect what you see. If edges are lost, prepare a crop with a safer focal area or use fit-and-pad with a deliberate background color.

The image has empty bars
This usually means the image was fit without filling the target ratio, or the desktop is using a centered or scaled presentation. If the full composition must remain visible, keep the bars and choose a considered background color. If the wallpaper must be full-bleed, crop to the target ratio before applying it or select a zoom-style presentation that you have previewed.
The subject is cut off
A crop or zoom removed edge content. Reopen the source, move the focal subject inward, or change the crop’s gravity toward the subject. Do not solve the problem by stretching unless distortion is acceptable.
The artwork looks distorted
An independent horizontal and vertical scale was applied, either during export or by a stretched desktop mode. Re-export with aspect-ratio preservation and choose a scaled, centered, zoomed, or padded presentation instead.

Confirm that the exported dimensions are at least the target display dimensions and that you are not viewing a smaller file enlarged by the desktop. Check the source and export at 100 percent, then avoid repeated resampling from an already-compressed derivative.

Only one monitor looks correct
Recheck whether the desktop is configured for per-monitor images or a spanning image. For a span, calculate the combined layout and account for monitor order and offsets, then test the spanned presentation. The available GNOME documentation does not specify every mixed-monitor geometry case, so live verification is essential.
The file is not accepted
Confirm that the file opens in a local image viewer, has a normal raster extension, and was exported completely. Try another conventional raster export from the same source, then reapply it through the desktop’s Appearance or wallpaper settings. Keep the original project so format changes do not destroy editable content.
10. A repeatable pre-application checklist
- Target width, height, orientation, and multi-monitor layout are written down.
- Artwork and target aspect ratios have been compared.
- Crop, fit-and-pad, or stretch is an intentional choice.
- Focal subjects and edge text are inside the safe area for the chosen crop.
- The final export has the intended pixel dimensions.
- The source project is preserved separately from the wallpaper file.
- The exported file opens correctly before desktop installation.
- GNOME or KDE positioning is selected to match the composition.
- The live desktop has been checked on every relevant monitor.

The reliable workflow is therefore specific to the display arrangement: measure the target, preserve proportions unless you intentionally accept distortion, choose where cropping or padding belongs, export a verified raster canvas, and judge the final result in the desktop that will render it.
