On a Galaxy phone, you add and manage widgets from the Home screen editor: touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose an app and widget style, then tap Add. To resize an existing widget, touch and hold it and drag the resize handle that appears. The handle may be a center dot or a corner, depending on your One UI version. For appearance and content controls, touch and hold the widget and tap Settings. The controls are widget-specific, so one widget may offer color and transparency while another has no customization at all.
Samsung notes that labels and screens vary by phone model, software version, and service provider. If a widget cannot be added, moved, resized, or removed, check the Home screen layout lock and whether that particular app still supports the widget.
Before you change a Galaxy widget
Widgets are Home screen panels supplied by an app. They show information or expose quick actions without opening the full app. A calendar, weather, clock, music, or device-control widget can therefore be useful in a small space, but its size, data, and appearance are controlled by the widget developer and by Samsung’s Home screen software.
Expect differences between Galaxy phones
Samsung’s support instructions are not identical across One UI releases. The general Galaxy guide describes a resize dot in the middle of a widget’s outline, while the One UI 7 guide describes dragging a corner after a long press. Treat the control visible on your phone as authoritative rather than trying to force one set of gestures onto every model.

Make room before adding
A widget can be placed only where the Home screen has enough open grid space. If the selected style is too large for the current panel, move icons or widgets, use another Home screen panel, or select a smaller style from the widget picker. A widget’s available sizes and layouts come from the app, so two apps may offer completely different choices.
How to add a widget
- Go to the Home screen panel where you want the widget.
- Touch and hold an empty part of the Home screen until the editing controls appear.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll through the app list or use the search field if your software provides one. Tap the app whose widget you want.
- Swipe through the offered widget styles or sizes. The preview indicates the shape and amount of information each option can show.
- Tap Add. If the widget asks for an account, location, calendar, folder, or another preference, complete that setup.
- Drag the widget to its final position if the editor leaves it floating, then tap outside the editor to finish.
The number of widget types and the controls shown in the picker depend on the app. Samsung documents this workflow in Add, customize, and use widgets on Galaxy phones. A widget may be placed on a different Home screen panel when the current panel has no suitable space.
If the app is installed but absent from Widgets
Open the app once, install any available app and phone updates, and check the other Home screen panels in case the widget was moved or placed in a stack. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking whether the app’s widget is supported on that device and whether a work profile or administrator has restricted it. Hidden apps and device conditions can affect what appears in the picker. See Samsung’s widget troubleshooting page for those checks.
How to resize a widget
- Touch and hold the widget on the Home screen.
- Look for a resize outline, dot, or corner handle. A handle appears only when that widget and its current placement support resizing.
- Drag the visible handle. Drag outward to occupy more grid cells or inward to make the widget smaller.
- Watch the preview while dragging. Some widgets change the amount of text, number of rows, or available controls at different dimensions.
- Release when the outline fits the space you want, then tap outside the editor.
Samsung’s US support article states, “Widgets that can be resized will have a dot in the center of the outline.” That description applies to the interface documented there; One UI 7 documentation instead shows a corner-drag gesture. If neither control appears, the widget is probably fixed-size, the Home screen is locked, or the app does not expose resizing.

When resizing does not work
- No handle: Try another style of the same widget from the Widgets picker. A small, medium, or wide style may be a separate widget rather than a freely resizable one.
- Layout is locked: Turn off the Home screen layout lock, described in the next section.
- There is not enough space: Move nearby icons or place the widget on another panel before dragging.
- The widget becomes blank or clipped: Return it to a supported size, open its settings, and update or restart the app. A widget can expose fewer fields at smaller dimensions.
- Instructions do not match: Follow the handle drawn on your screen. Samsung changes labels and gestures between models and One UI releases.
How to customize a widget’s appearance and information
- Touch and hold the widget.
- Tap Settings, or the similarly named control shown by your software.
- Adjust only the options offered for that widget, then return to the Home screen.
Depending on the widget, settings may include background color, transparency, light or dark treatment, displayed information, a selected account, a city, a calendar, or the actions shown in the panel. Samsung gives color and transparency as examples, not as universal controls. A widget with no Settings entry may have no additional customization beyond its preset sizes.
Color, transparency, and readability
Use transparency when you want wallpaper to remain visible, but check text contrast against both light and dark parts of the wallpaper. If the widget offers a background color or theme, choose the most legible combination rather than assuming the phone’s system theme will control every widget. Third-party widgets may implement their own appearance controls and may not follow the same design as Samsung apps.
Changing what the widget displays
Information settings are separate from resizing. A calendar widget can let you choose a calendar or event category; a weather widget may require a location; a clock can offer different faces. If a setting is not listed, the widget does not expose it through the Home screen. Open the full app when a choice is managed there instead.

Move, stack, and remove widgets
Move a widget
Touch and hold the widget, then drag it to another open position or to the edge of the screen to move it to another Home screen panel. Wait for the panel to change, position the widget, and release. The destination must have enough grid space for the widget’s current dimensions.

Create or edit a widget stack
Supported Galaxy software lets compatible widgets share one Home screen area as a stack. Swipe through the stack to view each widget. Samsung Canada’s instructions describe using the stack’s add control to include another widget: open the stack, tap its add option, and choose a compatible widget. Stacking is not available for every widget or on every model; if no stack control appears, use separate Home screen spaces instead. See Samsung Canada’s widget guide.
Remove a widget without deleting the app
Touch and hold the widget and tap Remove. This removes the panel from the Home screen only; it does not uninstall the app or erase the app’s data. You can add the widget again later from Widgets, provided the app still supports it.
Turn off Home screen layout lock
A locked layout prevents adding, removing, or moving widgets. To unlock it, open Settings, tap Home screen, and turn off the option labeled Lock Home screen layout (wording can vary). Return to the Home screen and try the widget action again. Samsung’s regional support pages document this setting, while noting that exact labels depend on software and region.

Fix widgets that disappear or do not work
The widget vanished after an update or restart
- Check every Home screen panel and any widget stacks.
- Open the Widgets picker and search for the app again.
- Confirm that the app is installed, not disabled, and visible if your phone hides apps.
- Install available updates for the app and the phone.
- Check whether a managed work profile has removed or restricted the widget.
Samsung lists unsupported widgets, hidden apps, updates, and managed-device restrictions among the causes of missing widgets. Its troubleshooting steps are at Widgets disappear or do not work on Galaxy phone or tablet.
The widget is present but shows no data
Open the widget’s settings and verify its account, location, calendar, or other data source. Open the full app to confirm that the underlying service works and that you are signed in. Check for app and system updates, then restart the phone. If the app works normally and is up to date but the widget still fails, Samsung directs users to the app developer because the widget’s code and data connection belong to that app.
You cannot add, move, or remove anything
Check Settings > Home screen and disable the layout lock. If editing remains unavailable, a work or school administrator may control the Home screen, or the phone may be showing a different launcher. Samsung warns that screens and settings vary by provider, model, and software version; use the labels displayed on your device.

The widget looks different after changing size
That is usually intentional. Widget layouts can switch from a detailed view to a compact view as grid dimensions change. Resize it back, choose another offered style, or use its settings to reduce the information shown. A widget cannot be made to display controls its developer did not design for that size.

Widgets on a Galaxy Z Cover screen
Supported Galaxy Z models can offer widgets on the external Cover screen in addition to the main Home screen. Availability depends on the model and One UI version. If your phone provides Cover screen widget controls, use the phone’s Settings path for that feature and follow the same principle: select only widgets listed as supported, then use the visible add, arrange, or settings controls. A widget available on the main Home screen is not automatically available on the Cover screen.
Because Samsung changes Cover screen behavior by device generation, consult the support instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that a main-screen gesture will work there. A practical layout workflow
For a clean setup, start with the information you check most often and give it the largest readable widget style. Place secondary widgets on another panel or in a stack if your phone supports stacking. Resize only after deciding which fields you actually need; reducing a widget can hide labels or controls, while enlarging one consumes space that could hold app shortcuts.

- Move it to a panel with enough room and unlock the layout if necessary.
- Resize using the handle shown by your phone.
- Open Settings on the widget and remove unnecessary information or select the correct account and location.
- Adjust color or transparency only if those controls are offered and the resulting text remains readable.
- Test the widget after a restart and after switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data if it depends on an online service.
- Lock the Home screen layout when the arrangement is finished.
This process separates three different issues: placement is controlled by the Home screen, dimensions are controlled by the widget’s resize support, and data or appearance are controlled by the widget’s own settings. Knowing which layer is responsible makes troubleshooting faster.
When menus do not match this guide
Samsung publishes regional and version-specific instructions, and it explicitly cautions that screens and settings can vary by service provider, software version, and model. The US general guide, One UI 7 guide, Canada guide, and Japan support page may therefore show different labels or gestures. Use the current label on your phone, look for the visible resize handle, and check support documentation for your exact model and software release:

The essential rule remains consistent: add from Widgets, resize only when a handle appears, use the widget’s own Settings for supported customization, and unlock the Home screen when editing is blocked.
