To resize an image for Instagram, choose the placement first, then crop or fit the image to a matching frame. Buffer recommends 1080 × 1080 pixels for a square feed post, 1080 × 1350 for portrait, 1080 × 566 for landscape, and 1080 × 1920 for a Story or Reel. These are Buffer’s recommendations—not a complete statement of Instagram’s current official upload rules.
Buffer’s free Instagram image resizer can resize an existing image in your browser. The guidance below helps you pick a frame, preserve the content that matters, and distinguish those recommendations from limits documented for publishing through Buffer.
Choose an Instagram image size
These dimensions come from Buffer’s current resizer page and its March 17, 2026 size guide. Use them as practical starting points for composition, not as a guarantee that every Instagram upload route applies identical requirements.

Buffer says profile-grid previews display at 3:4. If the image will also appear on your profile, place faces, logos, and text where they remain visible in that preview. See Buffer’s Instagram post size guide for its placement guidance.

How to resize an image without losing what matters
- Pick the destination. Decide whether the image is for a feed post, Story, or Reel before changing its dimensions.
- Set the target frame. Choose the corresponding size above so you can judge the crop against its intended shape.
- Choose crop or fit. Crop-to-fill uses the full frame but can cut off edges. Fit preserves the whole image, usually leaving empty space or requiring a border treatment.
- Check the crop at the target ratio. Look at the edges and center, including any text, faces, or logos. For a 3:4 profile-grid preview, keep critical content toward the center.
- Download and inspect the final file. Check that the saved image looks right before you publish it.
Buffer says its resizer processes images in the browser and that images stay on your device. Its page lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP inputs up to 10 MB, and says the first five images can be resized without an account. Those details apply to Buffer’s tool; they should not be assumed for other resizers.
Why image-size limits can differ
Recommended dimensions and upload limits are different kinds of guidance. Buffer’s resizer page gives one set of accepted formats and limits, while Buffer Support describes requirements for posting through Buffer’s API. Neither should be presented as a universal statement of Instagram’s current official rules.

- Buffer’s resizer page: lists JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC; an 8 MB maximum; dimensions from 320 to 1440 pixels wide, with a minimum image size of 150 × 150; and a supported aspect-ratio range of 4:5 to 1.91:1 or square.
- Buffer Support for API publishing: lists an 8 MB limit and a range of 3:4 to 1.91:1 or square. This lower portrait boundary differs from the resizer page’s 4:5 listing.
Because the two Buffer sources differ on the lower portrait ratio and describe different contexts, don’t merge their limits into a single rule. Check current Instagram Help guidance for the upload route you use if an exact platform requirement matters.

Native Instagram posting versus Buffer publishing
A third-party scheduler can impose constraints that are specific to its publishing route. Buffer Support’s guidance applies to posting through Buffer’s API, not automatically to every image uploaded directly in Instagram.

For Buffer-published carousels, Buffer Support says the first selected photo or video sets the cropping standard for the rest. Choose that first item with the whole carousel’s framing in mind; do not assume the same behavior applies to every native Instagram workflow.
Buffer’s support article also says its API supports sRGB and recommends saving in sRGB to reduce color shifts. It notes that Buffer converts files over 8 MB for publishing. These are Buffer publishing details, not evidence that resizing universally prevents compression or improves image quality.

What resizing can—and cannot—do
Matching the image to a chosen frame gives you more control over composition before upload. It does not establish a universal image-quality advantage or guarantee that Instagram will display every pixel as intended: cropping, previews, interface overlays, and the publishing route can all affect what viewers see.
