If Windows 10 or Windows 11 suddenly shows a black, blank, frozen, or flickering display, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B together. Windows attempts to reset the graphics driver without restarting the computer. A short beep or a momentary screen flicker can indicate that the command was accepted.
This is a display-driver reset and wake-up attempt—not a driver update, reinstall, monitor repair, or proof that the graphics processor is failing. If the picture does not return, use the symptom-specific recovery steps below.
What Win+Ctrl+Shift+B actually does
The four-key sequence tells Windows to reset the active graphics driver. Microsoft also documents the shortcut as a way to wake a device when the screen is blank or black. It is intended for a display that has become unavailable while Windows itself may still be running.
Press the keys at the same time:
- Windows logo key
- Ctrl
- Shift
- B
Do not type the characters into a search box, Run dialog, or command prompt. Hold the modifier keys, tap B, and release them.

The command does not install a newer driver, undo a recent driver update, replace corrupted driver files, repair a damaged cable, or change the monitor’s hardware. It is a reversible first response that can restore the display session when the driver has stopped responding.
When to use the shortcut
Try it when Windows appears to be operating but the visual output is suddenly unavailable. Typical situations include:
- A screen that went black after waking from sleep.
- A blank display after connecting or disconnecting a monitor.
- A brief or persistent flicker that began while Windows was running.
- A frozen picture where keyboard input or system sounds suggest the computer is still active.
- An external monitor that stopped displaying even though the computer has not shut down.
Save work first if you can. The reset normally affects the display driver rather than closing applications, but an unstable system can still require a restart, and unsaved work is always at risk when a display failure is part of a wider system lock-up.
How to reset the graphics driver
- Keep the computer powered on and, if possible, save open documents.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B together.
- Wait several seconds. Listen for a beep and watch for a brief flicker, a momentary black screen, or the image returning.
- Move the mouse or press a normal key to check whether the desktop, sign-in screen, or application is visible again.
A beep or flicker means Windows likely received and processed the shortcut. It does not establish that the original cause has been corrected. If the same problem returns, continue with the diagnostic steps rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.

If the display is still blank
Work through these checks in order. They move from the least disruptive changes to driver maintenance.
1. Cycle the Windows display mode
Windows may be sending the desktop to a different output, especially after a projector, dock, television, or second monitor was connected. Press Windows + P, then tap P to move through the available projection modes and press Enter to select one.
Allow a few seconds after each selection. If you cannot see the menu, press the sequence deliberately and wait for the display to change before trying the next mode.
2. Check monitor power and the video connection
- Confirm that the monitor is switched on and its power indicator is lit.
- Check both ends of the HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable.
- On the monitor, select the input that matches the connected cable.
- If a dock, adapter, splitter, or receiver is in the path, reseat it and test with the simplest direct connection available.
- Disconnect external displays and unnecessary peripherals temporarily, then test the computer’s built-in screen or a direct monitor connection.
A graphics-driver reset cannot restore an unplugged cable, an incorrect monitor input, or a failed display. These checks distinguish a Windows display-session problem from a physical signal problem.

3. Restart Windows
If the shortcut and connection checks do not restore the image, restart the device. A restart reloads the graphics stack and can clear a driver state that the shortcut could not recover. Use the normal Windows restart control if it is accessible. If the screen remains unusable, use the computer’s standard power procedure only after giving the system time to respond and considering any unsaved work.
4. Restart Windows Explorer when the pointer is visible
A blank desktop with a visible mouse pointer can indicate that the shell, rather than the entire graphics subsystem, has stalled.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list. If the list is simplified, expand Task Manager to show more details.
- Select Windows Explorer and choose Restart.
The taskbar and desktop may disappear briefly while Explorer reloads. This step does not update or reinstall the graphics driver; it tests whether the Windows shell is the part that stopped responding.
How to diagnose screen flicker
For intermittent flicker, compare Task Manager with the rest of the screen. This is one of Microsoft’s recommended ways to separate a likely display-driver problem from an incompatible application.

To run the comparison, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc while the flicker is occurring. Keep its window visible for several seconds. The test is a clue, not a complete diagnosis: multiple problems can occur together, and a stable Task Manager window does not prove that every driver component is healthy.
External-monitor troubleshooting
If only an external display is blank, start with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, then use Windows + P to cycle projection modes. Check the monitor’s selected input and the entire cable path before changing drivers.
Disconnecting the external monitor and other peripherals can identify whether the failure is tied to a dock, adapter, or second display. If the built-in screen works while the external screen does not, the evidence points toward the external connection, output selection, monitor input, adapter, or cable rather than a total Windows graphics failure. If every display remains blank, continue with restart and driver checks.

Use Device Manager when the problem continues after the reset, display-mode check, power and cable checks, and restart. Driver changes are more invasive than the keyboard shortcut, so make a note of when the problem began and whether it followed a Windows or driver update.

Update the driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant graphics adapter and choose the option to update its driver.
- Complete the available Windows prompts, then restart if requested.
An update can address a known compatibility or stability issue, but it is not guaranteed to fix a hardware fault, damaged cable, failing monitor, or application conflict.
Roll back after a recent change
If flicker or blank-screen failures started immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s properties in Device Manager and use the rollback option when Windows makes it available. Rollback is appropriate only when a previous driver is present and the timing supports the connection; it is not a general substitute for updating.
Uninstall and reinstall when the driver is damaged
Microsoft also documents uninstalling and reinstalling a display driver for persistent problems. In Device Manager, select the adapter under Display adapters, choose the uninstall action, and follow Windows’ instructions. Restart the computer so Windows can reload the driver, then install the appropriate driver supplied through your normal Windows or device-manufacturer channel.
Because uninstalling changes the system’s graphics software, use it after the reversible checks. A temporary low-resolution display after restart can be expected while Windows loads a basic or newly installed driver.
Choosing the next step by symptom

What the shortcut cannot tell you
A successful beep or flicker confirms only that Windows responded to the keyboard command. It does not prove that the graphics processing unit is defective, that the driver is current, or that the monitor and cable are working correctly.
The shortcut also cannot:
- Repair a damaged HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable.
- Replace a failed monitor, dock, adapter, or graphics card.
- Install a driver update or restore an older driver.
- Remove an incompatible application.
- Reinstall Windows or recover unsaved work.
Use the result as evidence in the troubleshooting path: if the display returns and remains stable, the graphics session may simply have stalled; if it returns briefly and fails again, investigate drivers, applications, power, cables, and external-display configuration.
Safety and recovery notes
- Press the keys together; do not hold them for a long period.
- Give Windows time to respond before repeating the command or forcing a shutdown.
- Do not interpret a one-time recovery as a permanent fix when the symptom recurs.
- Record whether the problem began after a driver, Windows, application, monitor, dock, or cable change. That timing helps choose between update, rollback, application testing, and hardware checks.
- If the display fails before Windows loads, the shortcut may not help because the Windows graphics driver is not yet active. Continue with the device’s normal startup and hardware-support procedures.
The practical answer
For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 display that suddenly goes black, blank, or unstable, start with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. It is quick, reversible, and specifically intended to reset the graphics driver or wake a blank display without a full reboot. If it does not restore a stable picture, cycle display modes, verify power and cables, restart, use Task Manager to test Explorer or diagnose flicker, and then manage the display driver in Device Manager.
