To reset a Terraria server world, stop the server, force a final save, and make a backup. Then choose one of three approaches: delete the world files for a permanent reset, rename them so the old world can be restored, or change the configured world name so Terraria generates a separate new world. Renaming and changing the world name are the safer choices because the original world remains recoverable.
Choose the reset method before touching any files
A Terraria server loads the .wld file specified by its startup configuration. A new world is generated only when Terraria cannot find a world file matching that configuration. Your choice determines whether the existing map can be recovered.

| Method | What you change | Can you recover the old world? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete files | Remove the world files from the Worlds folder | No; deletion is permanent unless you have a separate backup | A confirmed, irreversible wipe |
| Rename files | Add a suffix such as .old to the world and backup filenames |
Yes; reverse the rename | A temporary reset or cautious test |
| Change world name | Edit world= and, where present, worldname= in serverconfig.txt |
Yes; the original file remains under its old name | Keeping the old map while starting a separate campaign |
Vanilla Terraria worlds normally use a .wld file. tModLoader worlds can also have a matching .twld file, so a tModLoader reset must account for both extensions.
Prepare the server and create a backup
Stop the server cleanly
Do not delete or rename a world while the server process is running. A live process can keep files open, write a newer copy after you make changes, or leave a partially saved world. In a hosting panel, use the panel’s Stop control and wait until the status clearly shows that the process has exited. On a self-hosted console, issue the normal shutdown command or close the server only after it has finished saving.

Force a final save
From the Terraria server console, type save. The official Terraria Wiki documents this command as a way to force a save. Terraria also saves automatically at dawn, approximately every 24 minutes according to the Fandom guide, but waiting for an automatic cycle is less reliable than explicitly saving before shutdown.
Back up the complete world set
Copy the world files to a different folder, drive, or download location before resetting. Give the backup a date and identify whether it came from vanilla Terraria or tModLoader. For a world named MyWorld, the important files may include:
MyWorld.wld— the main world file.MyWorld.wld.bak— Terraria’s backup copy, when present.MyWorld.twld— tModLoader’s companion data file, when present.
Do not treat .wld.bak as a substitute for an independent backup. It is stored beside the active world and can be removed or overwritten during later operations.
Method A: Delete the Terraria world files
Deleting the matching files makes the configured world unavailable. On the next start, Terraria creates a new world if the server is configured to generate one. This is the shortest method, but it is irreversible from the server’s point of view.
- Stop the server and complete the backup steps above.
- Open the server’s Worlds folder in the hosting panel’s file manager or in your self-hosted installation.
- Identify the exact filename named by the server configuration. Remove the corresponding
.wldfile and its.wld.bakfile if one exists. - If the server uses tModLoader, remove the matching
.twldfile as well. Leaving mod-specific world data behind can create confusion when diagnosing the next launch. - Start the server. With no matching world found, Terraria generates a new world according to the configured creation settings.
Wabbanode’s tModLoader instructions specifically list the .wld, .twld, and .wld.bak files and warn that deleting them cannot be undone. Treat a delete as final even if your panel has a recycle bin; retention and recovery behavior depends on the host.

When deletion does not generate a world
If the server stops with a missing-world error instead of creating one, inspect serverconfig.txt. The configuration may point to a path that is not writable, may specify a fixed world= file while world creation options are absent, or may be using a different Worlds folder than the one you edited. Correct the path or use the name-switch method below.
Method B: Rename the old world instead of deleting it
Renaming makes the old files invisible to the configured world name while preserving them in the same folder. Nodecraft’s procedure adds .old to the end of the world filename. Because the server no longer sees the expected filename, it can generate a replacement.
- Stop the server and make an independent backup.
- In the Worlds folder, rename
WorldName.wldtoWorldName.wld.old. - Rename
WorldName.wld.baktoWorldName.wld.bak.oldif that backup exists. - For tModLoader, rename the matching
WorldName.twldtoo, for example toWorldName.twld.old. - Start the server and confirm that a new
WorldName.wldis created.
The suffix can be different, but it must change the filename enough that it no longer exactly matches the configured world path. Keep the original names in your notes. To restore the old map, stop the server, move the newly generated files elsewhere, remove the .old suffix from the original files, and start the server again.
Why both the active and backup names matter
Renaming only the active .wld while leaving a same-named backup can produce an ambiguous recovery situation. Rename every file belonging to that world as a set, including the tModLoader companion file when applicable.
Method C: Start a new world by changing the configured name
Changing the world name is usually the safest reset because the old map is not altered. Akliz recommends changing the world and worldname values to something other than the existing value, such as world. Nodecraft notes that the world loaded at startup is controlled by lines 4 and 5 of serverconfig.txt; exact line positions can vary if your file has been customized, so edit the key names rather than relying only on line numbers.

- Stop the server and back up the existing world.
- Open
serverconfig.txtin the panel editor or a text editor. - Find the
world=entry. Change it to a new path or filename, for exampleworld=WorldReset.wld, using the path format already used by your server. - Find
worldname=, if present, and change it to the same new base name, such asworldname=WorldReset. - Save the configuration and restart the server.
- Verify that a new world file is created under the new name and that players spawn in a fresh map.
Keep the old .wld, .wld.bak, and any .twld file untouched. To switch back later, stop the server and restore the original world= and worldname= values.
Find the Worlds folder on a self-hosted server
The exact location depends on the operating system and on the worldpath= setting. The official Terraria Wiki lists these common defaults:
| Platform or configuration | Location or setting |
|---|---|
| Linux default | ~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds |
| macOS default | ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds |
| Windows typical location | My GamesTerrariaWorlds |
| Custom location | The directory assigned by worldpath= in the server configuration |
For a dedicated server, the path can be relative to the directory from which the server starts, so a panel’s file manager may show a different tree from a desktop Terraria installation. Search the configuration first, then confirm that the folder contains the filename referenced by world=.
Understand the server configuration keys
The official wiki distinguishes settings used to load an existing world from settings used only when creating one:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
world=points the server to a specific.wldfile. It is the key to change when using the new-name method.worldpath=sets the directory in which world files are stored.autocreate=controls creation when no matching world is found.worldname=supplies the generated world’s name when a new world is created.seed=controls the seed used during creation.difficulty=controls the difficulty used during creation.
autocreate=, worldname=, seed=, and difficulty= do not reshape an existing world; they apply when Terraria creates a world. A forum report describes an older build misreading autocreate=2 (intended as a medium world), so check the meaning against the Terraria or tModLoader build you are actually running before relying on numeric values.

Hosting-panel procedure
Hosted Terraria services generally expose the same operations through a browser:
- Use the panel’s Stop action and wait for a fully stopped status.
- Use the panel’s console to run
savebefore stopping if the console is still available. - Download the world files or use the panel’s backup function.
- Open Files or File Manager, locate the Worlds directory, and apply either deletion, renaming, or configuration editing.
- Start the server and watch the live console for world-generation or file-path errors.
Panel labels differ by provider and may change over time. If the file manager does not show a Worlds folder, inspect the startup command or configuration path rather than creating a second folder at a guessed location.
Confirm that the reset worked
- The console reports world creation rather than loading the previous map.
- A new
.wldfile appears with the selected name and a current modification time. - For tModLoader, the corresponding
.twldfile is created when the mod environment requires it. - Joining the server places a test character in an unexplored spawn area instead of at a familiar base.
- The old world remains in its backup folder, carries the
.oldsuffix, or retains its original filename while the configuration points elsewhere.
Use a temporary test name and have one player join before inviting everyone back. This catches a wrong path or an unchanged configuration without risking additional progress on the wrong map.
Troubleshoot a reset that appears not to work
The old map still loads
Most often, the wrong file was changed or world= points to another directory. Read the complete path in serverconfig.txt, compare it with the file manager’s location, and check for duplicate Worlds folders. Also verify that the server was actually stopped before editing.
The server creates a world with an unexpected size or difficulty
Creation settings apply only to a newly generated world. Check autocreate=, difficulty=, and the build’s documented value mapping. Do not assume a numeric setting has the same interpretation across older and newer builds; the reported medium-world issue with value 2 is a reason to verify, not a universal rule.

The server cannot find the world
Check spelling, capitalization where the host filesystem is case-sensitive, the .wld extension, and the worldpath= directory. If you renamed a file, ensure the configured name no longer includes the old extension or suffix accidentally.
Players report missing modded progress
For tModLoader, restore the matching .twld file along with the .wld file. A vanilla server cannot interpret mod-specific data, and a tModLoader server may not behave correctly when only one member of the pair is restored.

Check that the server process has write permission to worldpath=, that the disk is not full, and that the path is not read-only. Run save, stop cleanly, and confirm that the new file’s modification time changes.
Restore the previous world
Restoration depends on the method used:
- After deletion: copy the independent backup back into the configured Worlds folder. Do not rely on the deleted files being recoverable.
- After renaming: stop the server, move the newly generated world aside, remove
.oldfrom every original file, and start again. - After changing the name: stop the server and set
world=andworldname=back to the original values, leaving the old files in place.
Always stop the server before replacing files. After restoration, run save and make a fresh backup so the recovered state is protected before players resume normal activity.
Which reset method should you use?
Use deletion only when you have confirmed that the old map is no longer needed and a separate backup exists. Use renaming when you want the smallest configuration change and an easy rollback. Use a new worldname when you want to preserve the old map in place, run multiple campaigns, or let players test a fresh seed without disturbing the original world. In every case, the essential sequence is the same: save, stop, back up, change only the intended files or configuration, restart, and verify the generated world before play resumes.
