To reset Instagram’s suggested content, open your profile, tap the three-bar More options icon, choose Content preferences, select Reset suggested content, review and accept the terms, then tap Reset suggested content again. The reset gives Instagram a new recommendation starting point; your choices afterward determine how the feed adapts.
Use Instagram’s built-in reset
The reset is an account setting, not a separate Explore or Reels button. Follow this path in the Instagram app:
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture or profile icon.
- Tap the three-bar More options icon.
- Tap Content preferences.
- Tap Reset suggested content.
- Read the information shown and accept the terms.
- Tap Reset suggested content a second time to confirm.
After confirmation, Instagram starts rebuilding recommendations from your later activity. Meta describes the feature as a reset of suggested content, rather than a deletion of your account, posts, messages or followed accounts.

What the reset covers
Meta says the reset applies to recommended content in Explore, Reels and Feed. That makes it broader than an Explore-only refresh. A video or post that appears because Instagram recommends it is within the scope described by Meta; the announcement does not promise that every item on Instagram will disappear or that every preference associated with your account will be erased.

The reset is best understood as a fresh starting point for recommendations. It does not permanently lock Instagram into a new set of suggestions. Meta’s official explanation says, “Your recommendations will start to personalize again over time, showing new content based on the content and accounts you interact with.” The statement appears in Meta Newsroom’s Reshape Your Instagram With a Recommendations Reset, published November 19, 2024 and updated July 14, 2025.
Prepare before you confirm
A reset is most useful when you also remove obvious sources of unwanted recommendations. Do these checks before or immediately after confirming:
- Review your following list. Meta specifically presents following-list review as part of the reset experience. Unfollow accounts whose posts no longer represent what you want to see.
- Decide what you want more of. Think in topics, formats and creators rather than trying to control one individual post. Your later interactions supply the signals Instagram uses to personalize recommendations again.
- Keep the reset’s scope in mind. It concerns suggested content. Do not assume it will remove accounts you follow, erase your own activity or change every other setting on the account.
Following-list review is a separate curation action. Meta does not describe the reset itself as an automatic unfollow operation, so check the list rather than expecting it to change on its own.

The reset only starts the process. Instagram continues to adjust suggestions according to the content and accounts you interact with afterward. Use the controls below when a recommendation is clearly useful or unwanted.
Mark a recommendation as Interested
When Instagram offers a recommendation that matches your interests, use Interested. Meta says this tells Instagram to show more of that recommended topic. It is a direct way to reinforce a subject you want to see after the reset.

Mark a recommendation as Not interested
For an unwanted recommendation, use Not interested. Meta says this reduces similar unwanted recommendations. Apply it to posts or videos that are clearly off-topic rather than using it indiscriminately on everything you have not watched.
Use Hidden Words for recurring terms
Hidden Words can hide posts containing words or phrases you choose. This is useful when recommendations repeatedly contain a particular topic or expression. It is a targeted filter, not a replacement for the broader reset.
Review followed accounts
If an account regularly produces content you no longer want, remove it from your following list. This is often more precise than relying only on recommendation feedback, because the account’s posts are part of the content you have chosen to receive.
Use lower-recommendation views when you want more control
Following Feed
Meta lists Following Feed as a way to view chronological posts from accounts you follow. Choose it when you want to catch up on followed accounts without relying as heavily on recommended posts.
Favorites
Favorites lets you prioritize selected accounts. Add the accounts whose posts matter most, then use that view when you want a more deliberate set of updates instead of a broad recommendation mix.

These views do not replace the reset. They are alternative ways to decide what to look at while Instagram continues personalizing suggested content in the background.

Reset versus smaller adjustments
Choose the least disruptive control that matches the problem. The following comparison uses the distinctions Meta gives for the reset and its other viewing and feedback tools.

A broad reset makes sense when several surfaces have drifted away from your interests. Use individual feedback when only a few recommendations are wrong. Use Following Feed or Favorites when your immediate goal is to see posts from accounts you already chose to follow.
Why your Explore page or Reels may feel wrong
Instagram recommendations change as you interact with content and accounts. After a reset, those later interactions become the basis for personalization again. Watching, opening or otherwise engaging with material you do not want can therefore influence what Instagram presents next, while using its feedback controls gives you a way to correct an unwanted direction.
The reset does not guarantee a permanent change. It creates a new starting point, but recommendations continue adapting. If the same unwanted subjects return, use Not interested, configure Hidden Words for recurring terms, and review accounts you follow instead of repeatedly resetting without changing the signals Instagram receives.

If “Reset suggested content” is missing
Meta’s announcement described the feature as being tested before a global rollout. Availability can therefore differ by account, geography or app version. A missing menu item does not necessarily mean you are following the wrong path.
- Open your profile and check More options and Content preferences again; the reset is located inside that settings path when it is available.
- Check whether the Instagram app is current on your device, because Meta identifies app version as one factor that can affect availability.
- Allow for account or regional rollout differences. Meta did not state that every account would receive the control at the same time.
- Use the available controls—Interested, Not interested, Hidden Words, Following Feed and Favorites—if the reset has not appeared.
Do not treat an absent menu item as evidence that your account is damaged. The official rollout description leaves room for staged availability.

It does not promise instant perfection
Meta says recommendations personalize again “over time,” but it does not publish a fixed relearning period. There is no official number of hours or days after which Explore or Reels should be considered fully rebuilt.
It does not promise that every followed account disappears
The announcement separately tells people to review their following list. That wording means you should manage followed accounts yourself rather than expecting the reset to remove them.
It does not promise an advertising reset
Meta describes the feature as resetting recommended content. The announcement does not say that it clears advertising preferences or removes every ad-related signal, so do not use this setting as a substitute for separate ad controls.

It does not erase your Instagram account data
The documented action is a recommendation reset. Meta does not describe it as deleting posts, messages, profile information or account history.
Practical reset plans
When almost everything feels off
- Run Reset suggested content from Content preferences.
- Review your following list and remove accounts whose content is no longer relevant.
- Use Following Feed or Favorites for immediate control over what you view.
- As new recommendations appear, mark clearly useful items Interested and unwanted ones Not interested.
- Add recurring unwanted words or phrases to Hidden Words.
When only one topic is the problem
- Use Not interested on the unwanted recommendations.
- Add distinctive recurring terms to Hidden Words.
- Check whether a followed account is responsible and unfollow it if appropriate.
A full reset is not required when a narrow adjustment addresses the problem. The smaller controls require ongoing curation, but they avoid restarting recommendation personalization across all documented surfaces.
When you mainly want posts from people you follow
- Open Following Feed for chronological posts from followed accounts.
- Add priority accounts to Favorites.
- Return to recommendation-heavy views when you want discovery, using feedback controls to refine what appears.
How to judge whether the reset helped
There is no published success-rate statistic and no fixed completion time from Meta. Judge the result by the direction of the recommendations you see over subsequent use, not by expecting an immediate, permanent transformation after tapping the confirmation button.

- Are recommended topics becoming more relevant to what you want to discover?
- Are unwanted subjects decreasing after you use Not interested?
- Are recurring terms being filtered when you configure Hidden Words?
- Can you rely on Following Feed or Favorites when you need a more controlled viewing session?
If recommendations drift again, that is consistent with Meta’s explanation that personalization resumes from later interactions. Apply the narrowest feedback control that addresses the new problem, and reserve another broad reset for a situation in which the overall recommendation mix has become unsuitable.
