If you still know the current administrator password, change it in Satisfactory’s in-game Server Manager: connect to the dedicated server, open its settings, replace Admin Password, and save. If the password is forgotten, stop the server, back up its files, and delete only the port-specific ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav file (for example, ServerSettings.7777.sav). Start the server again and set a new administrator password in Server Manager.
The two procedures have different consequences. A normal change preserves the server configuration. Removing the settings file leaves the world save in place but resets the server name, player-password protection, auto-load session name, certificate, and administrator password. The Admin Password protects administrative actions; it is not the same credential as the player or client-protection password.
Choose the right procedure
Use the path that matches what you can still access. Do not delete files merely to rotate a password you already know.

What the Admin Password controls
On a dedicated server, the Admin Password limits administrator privileges to players who know it. Those privileges include loading saves, changing server options, and creating a new game. It is an authorization credential, not the password that determines whether ordinary players may join.

Admin Password versus player password protection
Satisfactory exposes a separate player or client-protection password. That credential controls access for players, while the Admin Password gates administrative operations. Changing one does not inherently mean changing the other. When you reset the settings file, however, both password settings are among the values that return to an unconfigured state, so record the player password before a reset if you intend to keep it.
Before you begin: a short preparation checklist
First decide whether this is a routine change or a recovery. If any administrator can still authenticate, use Server Manager or the API rather than deleting a file. The file reset is for a lost or unusable credential and has wider consequences.
- Write down the server’s game port, because that number identifies the settings filename.
- Record the server name, player-protection password, auto-load session name, and certificate details if you may need to recreate them.
- Confirm that you can stop and start the dedicated-server process, either directly or through a hosting control panel.
- Make a backup of both the settings area and the world-save area before deleting anything.
- Tell connected players about the maintenance window. A clean shutdown is safer than editing a live server, and the server will be unavailable while the reset is performed.
These steps do not change the password themselves; they prevent an avoidable configuration loss while you work.

This is the least disruptive method. It does not require removing the server’s settings file or rebuilding the world.
- Start Satisfactory. Use the game client that can reach the dedicated server.
- Open Server Manager. Select the saved dedicated-server entry, or add the server if it is not listed.
- Authenticate with the current Admin Password. The existing administrator credential is required to open the protected settings.
- Open the server settings. Choose the settings control for that dedicated-server entry and locate the Admin Password field.
- Enter a new non-empty password. Use the value you want administrators to supply from now on. Do not leave the field blank.
- Save the settings. Wait for Server Manager to confirm or finish saving before closing the screen.
- Reconnect administrative clients. Any tool, game client, or operator that performs administrator actions must use the new credential the next time it authenticates.
Changing the field in Server Manager is appropriate when the old password is known because it avoids resetting unrelated settings. Keep a secure record of the new value; the file-reset procedure is intended for a lost credential and deliberately has wider effects.
What to check immediately after a normal change
Open a fresh Server Manager connection and authenticate with the new value instead of relying only on an existing session. Then perform a low-risk administrative check, such as opening server options, to verify that the account has administrator privileges. If another operator receives an authentication failure, make sure that client is not still using a cached old password. The player password does not need to change unless you deliberately want to change ordinary player access as well.
Reset a forgotten Admin Password with the settings file
Use this recovery procedure when no administrator can authenticate. It requires access to the dedicated server’s files or to a control panel that exposes them.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Shut down the dedicated-server process before touching its settings. A clean stop ensures the latest configuration is written and prevents the running process from recreating, overwriting, or locking the file while you work. Do not merely close a file manager window or edit while the process is active. Wait until the control panel or process list shows that the server has fully stopped.
2. Back up the relevant directories
Make a copy of the server settings and world-save directories before deleting anything. The backup gives you a way to restore the previous configuration if you remove the wrong file or need to recover the old server name, player password, auto-load session, or certificate. Keep the backup outside the directory you are cleaning so it cannot be mistaken for the live file.

3. Identify the port-specific settings file
Find the file named ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav, where <PORT> is the server’s game port. For a server using port 7777, the filename is ServerSettings.7777.sav. The official FAQ describes the file as being just above the server savegame directory in the dedicated-server save/configuration location.
Use the actual game port shown in your server configuration. Do not assume that every installation uses 7777; the number in the filename must match the port for the server you are resetting. If several dedicated servers share a machine, compare each port carefully so you do not reset the wrong instance.

Remove the matching ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav file and nothing else. In particular, do not delete the world-save directory. The reset instruction targets the port-specific settings file, while the world save is a separate concern. If your file manager offers a permanent-delete option, verify the name one more time before confirming it.
5. Start the server and add it in Server Manager
Launch the dedicated server again. In Satisfactory, open Server Manager and add or reconnect to the server. Because the settings file no longer contains an Admin Password, the setup flow will let you create a new one. Use the same server port when adding the entry so Server Manager reaches the instance whose settings you reset.
6. Recreate the settings that were cleared
Set the new Admin Password, then restore the server name, player-password protection, auto-load session name, certificate, and any other settings that the deleted file held. If you made a backup, use it as a reference rather than copying the old settings file back over the newly initialized configuration. Copying the old file back would also restore the forgotten password and undo the recovery.
7. Verify the world before ending maintenance
Confirm that the intended world save is available and that the server starts with the expected session. Test an administrator connection and, separately, a normal player connection. Only remove the backup after those checks succeed; it is your recovery path if a wrong port or wrong file was selected.

Deleting the port-specific settings file is broader than changing one field in the UI. Expect these values to be reset along with the administrator credential:
- Server name: the label clients see for the dedicated server.
- Player password: the separate protection used for ordinary client access.
- Auto-load session name: the session selected for automatic loading.
- Certificate: the server’s stored certificate information.
- Admin Password: the credential used to authorize administrative actions.
The documented operation does not instruct you to remove world-save files. The practical implication is that resetting credentials this way should not be treated as a world wipe, provided you delete only the correctly named settings file. Always verify the filename and keep a backup before confirming deletion.
Plan for a short reconfiguration task rather than assuming the server will look exactly as it did before. A changed server name can make a saved Server Manager entry appear unfamiliar, and a cleared auto-load session can leave the server waiting for you to select the intended save. Those effects are configuration resets, not evidence that the world itself was deleted.

Change the password through the HTTPS API
Advanced operators who already have an authenticated administrator session can call the HTTPS API operation named SetAdminPassword. It updates the current Admin Password and requires administrator privileges.
Authentication and token rotation
The API invalidates every previously issued client and administrator authentication token when the password is changed. The token used to make the request is therefore no longer valid after a successful update. Your automation must authenticate again and store the replacement token before attempting another protected request.
Schedule the token replacement as part of the same job as the password update. Otherwise, a script may report a successful password change and then appear to fail on its next call simply because it is presenting an invalidated token. Treat both the new password and replacement token as secrets, and do not print them in job output.
API validation errors
cannot_reset_admin_passwordis returned when the proposed Admin Password is empty. The API does not provide a way to remove administrator protection by submitting an empty string.password_in_useis returned when the new Admin Password is the same as the client-protection password. Choose a distinct value for the two credentials.
When the API is a good fit
The API is useful for repeatable administration, scripted credential rotation, or an operator who cannot use the graphical Server Manager but still has a valid administrator token. It is not a lost-password recovery mechanism: without an authenticated administrator, use the stopped-server settings-file reset instead. Protect the request data and returned tokens as secrets, and avoid placing credentials in shell history, public logs, or shared scripts.
For a one-off change on a single server, Server Manager is usually easier to audit because the new value and the resulting connection can be checked interactively. For several servers, an API workflow can reduce repetitive work, but only if the automation handles token invalidation, rejects empty values, and keeps the administrator and player passwords distinct.

Locating the file and handling a missing file
The filename does not match the port
If you cannot find ServerSettings.7777.sav, check the actual game port and look for ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav with that number. The port is part of the filename, so searching for a fixed example can miss the correct file.
The file is not visible
Stop the server completely and inspect the dedicated-server save/configuration area again. Documentation notes that settings may not be generated until the server has closed gracefully. A forced termination or an inspection while the process is still running can therefore leave you looking for a file that has not yet been written. Start and stop the server cleanly once, then check the location described above.
You are using a hosting control panel
Look for the panel’s file manager, backup tool, or server-save/configuration browser. The required operation is still the same: stop the instance, back up the settings and saves, delete the one port-specific settings file, then start the instance and complete setup in Server Manager. If the panel does not expose those files, its administrator must perform the reset or provide an equivalent restore operation.
Do not substitute a generic “reset server” button unless you know exactly what it removes. A full reinstall or world reset is broader than the documented credential recovery. Ask the host to target the port-specific settings file and preserve the world-save directory.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Deleting the world save directory
Symptom: the server starts as if the world never existed. Fix: stop further changes and restore the world-save backup. A password reset calls for deleting the ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav file, not the savegame directory.
Confusing the two passwords
Symptom: players can join but cannot load saves or change options, or the API rejects a password as already in use. Fix: treat the Admin Password and player/client-protection password as separate credentials. Assign and communicate each one for its intended audience.
Submitting an empty API value
Symptom: the API returns cannot_reset_admin_password. Fix: provide a non-empty administrator password. Empty input is rejected rather than disabling admin authentication.

Reusing the player password for administration
Symptom: the API returns password_in_use. Fix: choose a different Admin Password from the client-protection password.
Old tokens stop working
Symptom: an automation job receives authentication failures immediately after a successful API change. Fix: obtain a new authentication token; the password update invalidates all previously issued client and admin tokens, including the one used for the update.
Expecting the old server identity after a file reset
Symptom: the server appears with a default or new name, and automatic loading or certificate behavior is different. Fix: restore the recorded server name, auto-load session name, certificate, and player password during the post-reset setup.
Deleting a similarly named file
Symptom: the password remains unchanged or unrelated server behavior changes. Fix: stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, and confirm that the deleted filename exactly follows ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav for the intended game port. Do not guess based only on a partial filename.
Verification checklist after either method
- Connect through Server Manager using the new Admin Password.
- Confirm that an administrator can perform a controlled administrative action, such as opening server options or loading the intended save.
- Confirm that ordinary player access still matches your intended player-password setting.
- After a file reset, check the server name, auto-load session, and certificate rather than assuming they survived.
- For API automation, discard cached tokens and obtain replacement authentication before issuing further protected calls.
- Keep the backup until you have verified the world and configuration on a subsequent server start.
- Record which method was used and the date of the change so another operator knows whether a broader settings rebuild is still required.

Safely documenting the new configuration
After recovery, record the game port, the corresponding settings filename, the server name, the player-protection choice, the auto-load session, and where the latest backup is stored. Store the Admin Password separately from ordinary player credentials and limit access to the people who need administrative privileges. This record turns the next password rotation into a Server Manager change instead of an emergency file reset.

For a hosted server, keep the host’s support or control-panel procedure with that record. If you later lose both the password and filesystem access, the host will need enough information to identify the correct instance and port. A clear record also prevents an operator from deleting a similarly named settings file belonging to another server.

Will deleting ServerSettings..sav delete my Satisfactory world?
No. The documented reset targets the port-specific settings file, not the world-save directory. Back up both areas first, delete only the matching settings file, and verify the intended save after restarting.
Where is ServerSettings.7777.sav?
Look in the dedicated-server save/configuration location, just above the server savegame directory. Replace 7777 with the server’s actual game port; the port number is part of the filename.
Can I change the password without restarting the server?
