To reset mods on an ARK: Survival Ascended server, stop the server, remove the numeric CurseForge mod IDs from its startup configuration, and start it again. On a managed host, a control-panel option may remove the downloaded mod files instead; that operation is normally rate-limited and causes the selected mods to download again at the next start.
This guide separates a mod reset from a world wipe, explains the configuration differences between self-hosted and managed servers, and gives checks for the common “mods not loading” failures.
What a mod reset does—and what it does not do
A mod reset changes which modifications the server loads. It is the appropriate fix when you want to remove a broken mod, replace an old version, test an unmodded configuration, or clear a mod download that is preventing startup.
It is not a map reset. Deleting an .ark world file creates a new map and is destructive to the saved world. Do not remove world files when your goal is only to change mods. Cluster-transfer data is also separate from the mod list; deleting a Clusters directory can remove transfer inventory according to one hosting provider’s guidance, so treat that directory as game data, not disposable mod cache.

ASA identifies mods with numeric CurseForge project IDs. Steam Workshop IDs used by ARK: Survival Evolved are a different identifier format and should not be pasted into an ASA startup option.
Prepare before editing the server
Confirm which kind of server you operate
- Self-hosted dedicated server: you control the launch command or service file and the configuration files.
- Managed server: the host supplies a web panel, file manager, console, or startup-parameter editor. The exact labels differ by provider.
If you are unsure, look at how the server starts. A command, batch file, shell script, service unit, or container environment usually indicates self-hosting. A browser dashboard with a Start/Stop button indicates a managed host.
Schedule downtime and make a backup
Warn players before stopping the server. Copy the current startup configuration and GameUserSettings.ini to a safe location. A configuration backup lets you restore the previous mod list if a map or total-conversion mod requires a particular dependency order.
Stop completely before changing files
Use the host’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process and wait until it has exited. A host guide warns that edits made while the process is running can be overwritten during shutdown. Do not edit a file while the server is still writing its final save.
Reset mods on a self-hosted ASA server
1. Record the current mod list
Locate the startup argument containing -mods=. The value is a comma-separated list of numeric CurseForge project IDs. Keep a copy of the original line before changing it.

Use commas without spaces unless your host explicitly documents another syntax. Do not add the mod’s display name, a Steam Workshop URL, or a CurseForge web address to the value.
2. Find the correct CurseForge project ID
Open the mod’s CurseForge project page and read the numeric value shown in its “About Project” information. The project ID is not necessarily the number in a download URL or the name displayed in-game. If the page does not clearly expose a numeric project ID, check the host’s ASA startup-parameter help or test the mod on a disposable server rather than guessing.
3. Remove the unwanted ID from the launch option
Delete only the unwanted ID and its adjacent comma. For example, change:
-mods=123456,234567,345678to:
-mods=123456,345678If you are removing the first or last item, remove the remaining extra comma as well:
-mods=234567,345678-mods=123456,234567To run an unmodded server through this setting, remove the complete -mods=... token rather than leaving an empty value such as -mods=, unless your host specifically requires an empty argument.

4. Check for a second mod list
Some ASA installations also contain an ActiveMods= entry under [ServerSettings] in GameUserSettings.ini. Reports conflict on whether this setting is used by every ASA version and server setup: some guides treat it as an additional source, while others describe it as an ARK: Survival Evolved setting that has no effect in ASA.
For a setup that already uses ActiveMods, remove the unwanted numeric ID there as well and keep the launch argument and file consistent. If your installation has never used the entry, do not add it merely because an old guide mentions it. When behavior differs between the two lists, use one clearly documented source of truth and verify the result on the live server or a disposable test instance.
5. Preserve the required order
ASA loads mods in list order. A map mod or total-conversion mod may need to be first, and one host guide describes the left-most ID as having the highest priority. Removing an item should not reorder the remaining IDs unless the mod author or your server host specifies a different dependency order.
6. Start the server and verify the result
- Save the edited startup command or configuration file.
- Start the server normally.
- Watch the console or startup log for the mod IDs being downloaded and initialized.
- Join with an administrator account and confirm that the removed mod’s content, structures, items, or engrams are no longer present.
- Have a player connect from a clean client to verify that the server advertises only the intended mod set.
Players joining a modded server are generally prompted to download missing mods automatically. A prompt for a mod you removed usually means the server is still advertising that ID from another configuration source, or the old process did not stop cleanly.

Use a “wipe” or “reset mods” action when available
Some managed hosts provide a panel action to wipe the server’s mods folder on the next restart. The wording may be “Reset Mods,” “Wipe Mods,” or similar. This is different from editing the startup list: it removes downloaded mod files, while the startup configuration determines which projects should be requested again.

- Stop the server from the control panel and wait for the status to show it is offline.
- Open the settings, tools, or file-management area and locate the host’s mod-reset action.
- Read the confirmation text carefully. A reset normally affects all downloaded mods, not just one project.
- Confirm the operation, then start the server.
- Allow extra startup time while the configured mods download again.
- Check the console and join the server to verify that the intended list loads.
One managed-host implementation limits this reset to once every 24 hours. That limit is provider-specific; if the button is disabled, wait for the displayed cooldown or edit the configured mod IDs instead. Because all configured mods download again after a wipe, schedule the operation when players can tolerate a longer restart.
If the panel has no reset button
Use the panel’s startup-parameter editor and apply the same ID-removal procedure described for self-hosting. Do not delete arbitrary directories through the file manager unless the provider documents the exact path and effect. A universally safe self-hosted mods-folder location and wipe procedure could not be established, so guessing a path risks deleting saves or other server data.
How to remove every mod temporarily
For a clean diagnostic start, stop the server and remove the complete -mods=... argument from the launch configuration. If your installation demonstrably uses ActiveMods=, clear that list too. Start the server and test the map.

The server still asks for a removed mod
- Stop the process again and search every startup script, service definition, container variable, and panel parameter for the old numeric ID.
- Check
ActiveMods=only if your installation uses it; remove the ID there as well. - Make sure an old server process is not still running on the same port.
- Confirm that the edited file belongs to the instance you actually start. Hosts often expose separate settings for test, production, and cluster servers.
A desired mod does not load
- Verify that the value is the CurseForge project ID, not an ARK: Survival Evolved Steam Workshop ID.
- Check spelling of the argument: it must be
-mods=followed by IDs separated with commas. - Remove spaces, quotation marks, or trailing punctuation that your host does not document.
- Review the startup log for a download error, an unavailable project, or a dependency that must load first.
- Confirm that the server was fully stopped before saving the change.
The server starts but the map will not load
Map and total-conversion mods are especially sensitive to order and compatibility. Restore the backed-up list, place the map project first when its documentation requires that position, and test with only the map plus its stated dependencies. Do not delete the world file as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Players see a version or content mismatch
Restart after changing the list so the server can advertise the new set. Ask an affected player to let the game finish downloading the server’s current mods, then reconnect. If only one player fails, compare that client’s downloaded mod state with a clean client before changing the server world.
The server becomes unstable after a removal
Some mods add saved objects, items, or data that another mod or the map expects. Stop the server, restore the previous configuration backup, and test in a copy or disposable instance before attempting another removal. Keep the original save untouched until you know that the remaining mod set can load it.

Resetting mods without destroying your world
The safest sequence is configuration-first: preserve the save, stop the process, change only the mod IDs, and restart. A mod reset does not require deleting .ark files. Removing those files is a separate world-reset decision that should be made only after a verified backup and an explicit plan to create a new map.
Likewise, do not treat cluster-transfer directories as mod caches. If you operate a cluster, document which folders contain transfer data and back them up before any cleanup. A panel’s “wipe mods” function is preferable to manual deletion because its scope is defined by the provider.
