If Linux Mint’s Cinnamon desktop is still usable, the safest reset is built in: right-click an empty area of the panel, choose Troubleshoot, then Restore all settings to default. If the panel or settings application cannot be used, reset Cinnamon’s dconf settings from a terminal with dconf reset -f /org/cinnamon/ or gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon. Log out and back in afterward.
Back up your current settings first if you may want to recover your panel layout, keyboard shortcuts, themes, or other customizations. A Cinnamon reset changes Cinnamon’s stored settings; it does not automatically remove every applet, extension, theme, Nemo preference, or configuration file in your home directory.
What a Cinnamon reset actually changes
Cinnamon stores many desktop preferences in the dconf configuration database. The Cinnamon subtree is /org/cinnamon/. Resetting that subtree removes the values Cinnamon has stored there and lets its schemas provide their defaults again.

This is narrower than deleting all hidden files in your home directory. A reset can restore panel and desktop preferences while leaving separately installed components and unrelated application settings in place. In particular:

- Nemo, the Cinnamon file manager, has its own dconf path,
/org/nemo/. - Installed applets, desklets, extensions, and themes are not guaranteed to be uninstalled or erased.
- GTK preferences and other files under your home directory may remain unchanged.
That scope is useful when a panel layout, desktop setting, or Cinnamon preference has become corrupted. It also explains why a reset may not fix a problem caused by an extension, a theme, Nemo, or another user-level configuration file.
Back up your settings before resetting
A dconf dump gives you a text backup of the values currently stored below a path. It is the quickest way to make the reset reversible.
Back up Cinnamon
- Open a terminal in your normal Linux Mint user session.
- Run:
dconf dump /org/cinnamon/ > ~/cinnamon-backup.dconfThe file cinnamon-backup.dconf is saved in your home directory. The dump records values that differ from the defaults, rather than creating an image of the whole desktop.
Back up Nemo when its preferences matter
If the problem involves Nemo’s views, behavior, or file-manager preferences, save that separate subtree as well:
dconf dump /org/nemo/ > ~/nemo-backup.dconfKeep these files somewhere you will not accidentally overwrite them while troubleshooting. They are plain-text configuration exports, so you can also copy them to external storage as part of a broader backup.
Why the backup matters
A reset is easy to perform but can remove deliberate customizations such as panel arrangement, applet settings, hotkeys, and desktop behavior. The dump lets you restore the saved values selectively or return the entire Cinnamon subtree to its previous state. If the desktop is unstable enough that you are considering broader file changes, make a full home-directory backup or a Timeshift snapshot before proceeding.
Choose the reset method
Use the least invasive method that you can access. The graphical command is the first choice when Cinnamon is functioning; the terminal commands are useful when the panel or settings application is not.

Do not use a system administrator account or add sudo to these commands. Reset the settings for the user whose Cinnamon session is broken.
Reset Cinnamon from the graphical interface
Use the panel Troubleshoot menu
- Save the dconf backup described above if you may need your customizations later.
- Right-click an empty area of the Cinnamon panel.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Restore all settings to default.
- Allow the reset to finish, then inspect the panel and desktop.
The wording Restore all settings to default is the built-in Cinnamon troubleshooting action documented for this purpose. It is intended for a session where the panel can still receive a right-click.
Use a dialog’s Reset to defaults control
Some Cinnamon configuration dialogs expose a Reset to defaults control. Use it when only one settings area is misbehaving and you do not want to reset the complete Cinnamon subtree. Open the dialog that contains the affected option, select Reset to defaults, apply the change if the dialog asks you to, and then test the desktop.
A dialog-level reset is more targeted than the panel troubleshooting action. It will not necessarily change settings stored in other dialogs or remove an extension that supplies the behavior you are trying to fix.

Reset Cinnamon from the terminal
Use a terminal when the panel, menu, or settings application is unusable but you can still run commands in the affected user session.
Primary dconf command
- Open a terminal.
- Run:
dconf reset -f /org/cinnamon/The -f option applies the reset recursively below /org/cinnamon/. It targets Cinnamon’s stored settings rather than every application’s configuration.
Alternative gsettings command
You can reset the Cinnamon schema namespace recursively instead:

gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamonThis is a documented alternative to the dconf command. Use one method, not a chain of increasingly broad deletion commands. Neither command is a substitute for a full home-directory cleanup.
Refresh the session
- Log out of Cinnamon.
- Log back in and check the panel, menu, desktop, and affected preferences.
- If the old state is still displayed or the panel does not redraw correctly, reboot once and test again.
Some components read their settings when the session starts, so a command can succeed without changing an already-running component until you start a fresh session.
Restore a backup if the reset removed a customization
If you created ~/cinnamon-backup.dconf, restore it with:
dconf load /org/cinnamon/ < ~/cinnamon-backup.dconfFor the Nemo export, use:
dconf load /org/nemo/ < ~/nemo-backup.dconfAfter loading either file, log out and back in if the affected application does not immediately pick up the values. Restoring a dump brings back the values captured in that file; it does not restore an applet, desklet, extension, or theme that has been removed separately.
Restore selectively when possible
A dump is text, so you can inspect it before loading. If only one feature caused trouble, avoid restoring the entire export blindly. Keep the reset in place and load only the settings you are confident about, or make a smaller export after you have rebuilt a stable desktop. This prevents a problematic value from re-entering the session along with otherwise useful customizations.
What the reset does not remove
Applets, desklets, and extensions
The dconf reset changes stored Cinnamon values. It does not guarantee that every installed applet, desklet, or extension is removed. A broken extension can continue to affect the session after Cinnamon’s core settings return to defaults. If the problem follows one of these components, disable or remove that component using Cinnamon’s own management interface after the basic reset, then start a fresh session.
Themes
A theme can remain installed and selected through files or settings outside the part you reset. If the desktop still looks or behaves incorrectly, test with the default theme separately rather than assuming the reset removed all theme data.

Nemo preferences
Resetting /org/cinnamon/ does not reset Nemo’s /org/nemo/ path. If file-manager behavior is the issue, either restore the Nemo backup or reset its settings deliberately after saving them. Keep the two exports separate so that you know which application’s configuration you are changing.
Other user configuration
GTK settings and arbitrary files under your home directory may be unrelated to Cinnamon’s dconf subtree. Deleting the entire user configuration directory is therefore a much broader action than the commands in this guide and can affect many applications at once.

Confirm that the session was restarted
First log out and back in. If the panel or desktop still shows the previous state, reboot. This distinguishes a settings reset that has not yet been re-read from a problem that survives a new session.
Separate Cinnamon settings from add-ons
If a clean session appears only after an applet, desklet, extension, or theme is disabled, the add-on—not the Cinnamon defaults—was the likely trigger. Re-enable components one at a time so you can identify the one that recreates the fault.
Use a broader recovery only after backing up
When the session remains unusable, make a full home-directory backup or Timeshift snapshot. Then move relevant user configuration aside so Cinnamon can regenerate defaults. Do this selectively and retain the original files; moving known configuration out of the way is safer than deleting an entire home directory or copying every old file back at once.
After Cinnamon starts with fresh configuration, restore files selectively. Test after each group of changes. If the fault returns, remove the last group and keep the working configuration, rather than restoring the whole old configuration in one operation.
Common questions and failure points
“The command ran, but nothing changed.”
A running session may still be displaying values it loaded earlier. Log out and back in, then reboot if necessary. Also verify that you ran the command as the affected user; a reset performed for another account does not change this session.

“My panel is back, but an applet is still present.”
That is consistent with the reset’s scope. Cinnamon settings were reset, but installed applets and extensions are not guaranteed to be removed. Manage the add-on separately.
“The desktop is fixed, but Nemo still behaves the same way.”
Nemo has its own dconf path. Save /org/nemo/ first if you may need the settings, then reset or restore that path independently.
“Can I undo the reset?”
Yes, if you made a dconf dump. Load the corresponding file with dconf load, then start a fresh session. Without a backup, there is no general command that reconstructs every individual customization exactly.
“Should I delete all hidden files to get a true factory reset?”
No—not as a first step. A Cinnamon reset is intentionally narrower. Broad deletion can affect unrelated applications and may make recovery harder. Use a full backup first and move only relevant configuration aside if narrower methods fail.
A practical reset sequence
For most Linux Mint Cinnamon problems, follow this order:
- Export Cinnamon settings with
dconf dump /org/cinnamon/ > ~/cinnamon-backup.dconf. - Export Nemo settings too if file-manager customizations matter.
- Use the panel’s Troubleshoot → Restore all settings to default action when the panel works.
- If the graphical route is unavailable, run
dconf reset -f /org/cinnamon/orgsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon. - Log out and back in; reboot if the panel or desktop does not refresh.
- Test before restoring add-ons or old configuration.
- If the problem persists, make a full backup, move only relevant user configuration aside, and restore files selectively.
This sequence gives you a reversible first step, a terminal fallback, and a controlled escalation path without confusing a Cinnamon settings reset with a complete deletion of your Linux Mint user profile.
