Start with the least destructive option. On Android, open Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications) > Gboard > Storage and cache, then tap Clear cache. If the keyboard still crashes, freezes, lags, or mishandles voice input, Google’s next step is Clear data or Clear storage. Google says that action “resets Gboard to its default state.” It targets Gboard’s app storage, not a factory reset of the phone, but Gboard-specific settings and learned personalization may need to be set up again.
If you only want to remove unwanted learned words, do not clear all app data: use Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words on Android. On an iPhone or iPad, use Gboard’s Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary; Android storage controls do not apply to iOS.
Choose the reset that matches the problem
“Reset Gboard” can mean three different things. Clearing a temporary cache is a troubleshooting step. Deleting learned words removes vocabulary Gboard has saved for predictions. Clearing Gboard’s data or storage returns the keyboard app to its default state and is the broadest reset described in Google’s Android help.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Action | Where to find it | Best for | Effect on personalization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Android Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications) > Gboard > Storage and cache | Crashes, freezing, unresponsiveness, typing lag, and some voice-input problems | Least disruptive option; Google lists it before clearing app data |
| Delete learned words | Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words | Removing unwanted vocabulary while keeping other Gboard data | Deletes saved words stored on the device; other settings are not the target |
| Clear data / Clear storage | Android Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications) > Gboard > Storage and cache | Returning Gboard to its default state after less disruptive steps fail | Gboard-specific settings and saved learning may have to be configured again; Google does not itemize every setting that resets |
| Clear my dictionary | Gboard app on iPhone/iPad > Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary | Removing learned vocabulary on iOS | Clears the Gboard dictionary, not Android app storage |
Use the narrowest action that solves the problem. If preserving Gboard preferences and learned predictions is important, stop after cache clearing or change the single setting that is causing trouble rather than clearing storage.

Prepare before touching Gboard storage
First identify the result you actually want. A keyboard that freezes calls for troubleshooting; an embarrassing suggested word calls for dictionary deletion; a badly misconfigured keyboard may justify returning the app to defaults. Those goals should not all lead to the same button.
- Note or screenshot Gboard options you cannot easily recreate, including any layout, theme, language, or other custom choices that matter to you.
- Confirm that you are opening Gboard, not another keyboard app listed in Android’s Apps screen.
- Try the cache step before app-data deletion, because Google places it first in its troubleshooting sequence.
- Read the confirmation prompt carefully. A prompt for Clear data or Clear storage is the point at which you approve a default-state reset.
- After every step, test a text field. If the symptom is gone, there is no benefit in escalating to a broader reset.
What “without losing your phone’s data” actually means
Google’s documented procedure operates through Gboard’s app-storage controls. It is therefore different from an Android factory reset, which is designed to erase a device and return the operating system to an initial setup state. The Gboard help page describes the scope as Gboard, but it does not provide an item-by-item inventory of every phone file that remains untouched. The careful description is that you are resetting Gboard, not initiating a device-wide reset.
Before using Clear data or Clear storage, record any Gboard preferences you care about, such as layout, theme, or other options you have customized. Google explicitly says the action resets Gboard to its default state, and the help page does not promise that each individual setting or learned item will survive. A short note or screenshot lets you restore your preferred configuration afterward without assuming which controls your device will retain.
Android: clear Gboard’s cache first
Google places cache clearing first in its Android troubleshooting sequence for Gboard problems. A cache is temporary app data; removing it is the least disruptive reset in this guide.
- Open Settings on the Android phone.
- Tap Apps. Some Android versions label this area Apps and notifications.
- Select Gboard. If the first screen shows a shortened list, open the control that displays all installed apps and then choose Gboard.
- Tap Storage and cache.
- Choose Clear cache. Do not choose Clear data or Clear storage unless you have decided that a full Gboard reset is necessary.
- Return to a text field and test typing, suggestions, and any voice-input feature that was failing.
Android menu names and their order can differ by Android release and phone manufacturer. The labels above follow Google’s documented path; use the equivalent Gboard storage screen when your device presents slightly different wording.
If the keyboard still misbehaves
Restart the phone and make sure Gboard is current before taking the more disruptive step, when those options are available on your device. Then repeat the path to Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications) > Gboard > Storage and cache. If the fault remains, proceed to Clear data or Clear storage after reading the consequences below.
Android: reset Gboard with Clear data or Clear storage
Google’s official troubleshooting instruction is to return to Gboard’s storage screen and select Clear data or Clear storage when clearing the cache has not solved the problem. Google’s wording is exact: “This resets Gboard to its default state.”

- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps or Apps and notifications.
- Tap Gboard, then Storage and cache.
- Choose Clear data or Clear storage, using the label shown by your Android version.
- Read the confirmation prompt and approve it only if you are ready for Gboard to return to its defaults.
- Open a text field and test the keyboard. Reapply the preferences you noted before the reset.
This is more disruptive to Gboard than clearing its cache. Gboard-specific settings and saved learning may need to be configured again. Google’s help does not list every control that returns to default, so do not assume a particular theme, layout, language choice, shortcut, or other preference will be preserved. The operation is still a Gboard storage action, not a command to erase the entire phone.
When to stop before clearing storage
- You are trying to preserve Gboard’s learned predictions or custom settings.
- The symptom is limited to one option, such as an unwanted correction or layout choice that can be changed directly.
- You have not yet tried clearing the cache and testing the keyboard again.
- You cannot currently reconfigure Gboard after a reset, for example because you need a particular language or accessibility setting immediately.
Android: delete learned words without resetting all Gboard data
Gboard can save words that you type so it can improve spelling and predictions. Google says these saved words are kept only on the device and can be deleted separately from the app’s general storage.
- Open any app with a text field.
- Bring up Gboard, then open Gboard Settings. The settings button may be on the keyboard toolbar; if it is hidden, use the keyboard’s menu to expose it.
- Tap Dictionary.
- Select Delete learned words.
- Read the confirmation screen and enter the number shown to confirm deletion.
This route targets the learned vocabulary rather than resetting every Gboard setting. It is the appropriate choice when predictions contain names, spellings, or phrases you no longer want suggested but the keyboard itself works normally.
Google’s learning and privacy help also describes a control named Delete learned words and data under Gboard’s Privacy controls. That wording indicates a broader deletion of on-device data Gboard has saved. Labels can vary by version, so follow the precise control displayed on your phone instead of assuming that “Delete learned words” and “Delete learned words and data” always mean the same scope.

iPhone and iPad: use iOS-specific controls
Android’s Settings > Apps storage procedure does not apply to Gboard on iOS. Google documents separate actions for the dictionary and for the keyboard list.
Clear the learned dictionary
- Open the Gboard app.
- Tap Keyboard settings.
- Choose Clear my dictionary.
- Tap OK to confirm.
If Gboard is provided through the Google app on your iPhone or iPad, open the Google app’s settings, select Gboard, then follow Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary > OK.
Remove and add Gboard when it is missing or shows “null”
- Open iOS Settings.
- Go to General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Remove Gboard from the list.
- Add Gboard again from the same keyboard-management screen.
When several keyboards are installed, hold the globe key while typing and choose Gboard to switch back to it. Removing and re-adding a keyboard addresses a keyboard-list or selection problem; it is not the Android app-data reset described above.

What happens to personalization and privacy
Reset decisions are easier when you distinguish three kinds of information: settings, learned words, and other learning data. Clearing the cache is intended for temporary troubleshooting. Deleting learned words removes the vocabulary Gboard saved on the device. Clearing app data or storage returns the app to defaults and may remove or reset broader Gboard-specific personalization.
Google’s Android troubleshooting help says Gboard saves typed words to support spelling and predictions and stores those words only on the device. The same page says searches, usage statistics, and voice input used for transcription are sent to Google, while ordinary typed text other than searches and saved words is not sent, according to Google’s description of the product. These are Google’s stated product behaviors, not a guarantee about every keyboard or every Android application.
Google’s learning and privacy help says federated learning is enabled by default and can be turned off. It also describes on-device personalization and a control for deleting data Gboard has saved locally. If you are clearing data because of privacy concerns, inspect the Privacy controls rather than assuming that a dictionary deletion is equivalent to deleting every category of Gboard learning.
For voluntarily donated audio snippets, Google states: “Google won’t keep these snippets beyond 18 months.” That statement applies to those donated snippets only; it is not a retention period for all Gboard data.
After clearing data: restore only what you need
When Gboard opens in its default state, avoid changing everything at once. Test ordinary typing first, then restore only the preferences that solve a real problem. This makes it easier to identify whether a particular option caused the original behavior.
Check predictions and voice input separately if either was part of the original complaint. If learned vocabulary is missing, that is expected after deleting it or after a broader storage reset; add important words again through normal use or the available dictionary controls. If the keyboard still fails after a clean Gboard reset, repeating the same storage action is unlikely to add information, so document the exact symptom and the menu path you used before seeking further device support.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Gboard is slow, frozen, or repeatedly crashes
Start with Clear cache, then restart and test the keyboard. If the same failure continues, use Clear data or Clear storage and expect to restore Gboard preferences. Do not jump directly to a phone factory reset: that is a different, device-wide operation and is not part of Google’s Gboard troubleshooting path.

Predictions contain words you do not want
Use Dictionary > Delete learned words on Android, or Clear my dictionary on iPhone and iPad. Clearing the entire app storage is broader than necessary when the keyboard otherwise works.
Gboard disappeared on an iPhone or iPad
Manage it under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Remove Gboard and add it again, then use the globe key to select it while typing.
You cleared data and the keyboard looks unfamiliar
That is consistent with Google’s description that Clear data or Clear storage resets Gboard to its default state. Reopen Gboard settings and restore your preferred options. If a particular learned word is missing, add it again through normal use or the dictionary controls rather than clearing storage repeatedly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing Clear storage when you only wanted to remove one word: use the dictionary deletion control instead.
- Applying Android instructions on iOS: iPhone and iPad use Gboard’s own dictionary control and iOS keyboard-list settings.
- Assuming every menu has identical wording: Android may show Apps or Apps and notifications, and may call the reset Clear data or Clear storage.
- Calling a Gboard reset a phone reset: the documented action is inside Gboard’s app storage; it is not a factory reset.
- Expecting a complete inventory of what survives: Google confirms the default-state reset but does not enumerate every individual setting affected. Save screenshots of important preferences first.
- Confusing dictionary deletion with all privacy deletion: Google documents a separate Privacy control called Delete learned words and data on some versions.
A safe decision sequence
- Identify the goal: fix a malfunction, remove learned vocabulary, or return all Gboard settings to defaults.
- On Android, restart or update when appropriate, then clear Gboard’s cache.
- Test typing, predictions, and voice input.
- If the malfunction remains, clear Gboard data or storage and reconfigure the keyboard.
- If only learned words are the issue, use the dictionary deletion control instead of clearing app storage.
- On iPhone or iPad, clear the dictionary from Gboard settings; manage a missing keyboard through iOS’s keyboard list.
Following this order limits the reset to the smallest scope likely to solve the problem while keeping the operation separate from a device-wide data wipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing Gboard data erase photos, messages, or other phone files?
Google documents this as a reset of Gboard’s app storage, not a factory reset. It does not describe an item-by-item inventory of every other file, so the precise claim is that you are resetting Gboard rather than intentionally wiping the phone.
Should I clear cache or clear storage first?
Clear cache first. Google lists it before Clear data or Clear storage for crashes, freezing, unresponsiveness, typing lag, and some voice-input problems. Escalate only if the symptom remains.

Delete learned words targets saved vocabulary. Clear data or Clear storage is broader and returns Gboard to its default state, so other Gboard-specific settings and learning may need to be configured again.

Where are learned words stored?
Google says Gboard’s saved words are stored only on the device. Android users can remove them through Dictionary > Delete learned words and confirm by entering the number shown.
Does Clear my dictionary on an iPhone reset all Gboard settings?
Google’s iOS control is specifically named Clear my dictionary, so it targets the learned dictionary. It is not the Android app-storage reset. If Gboard is missing or shows “null,” remove and add it again under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
Why do I see Clear data on one Android phone and Clear storage on another?
Android releases and manufacturers vary in menu wording. Google’s documented path uses the Gboard storage screen and lists Clear data or Clear storage as the reset choice.

Will my learned predictions come back after a reset?
Do not assume they will. Google says Clear data or Clear storage resets Gboard to its default state, and its help does not promise that every learned item survives. Preserve important preferences before proceeding.
Can I remove Gboard learning for privacy reasons without resetting everything?
Use the Privacy controls available in your version. Google describes Delete learned words and data as clearing on-device data Gboard has saved; that can be broader than the dictionary-only control.
How long does Google keep voluntarily donated Gboard audio snippets?
Google states that it will not keep those snippets beyond 18 months. That statement applies only to voluntarily donated audio snippets, not to every category of Gboard data.
The Bottom Line
For Android, clear Gboard’s cache first. Use Clear data or Clear storage only when troubleshooting still fails and you accept that Gboard will return to its default state. If unwanted vocabulary is the issue, delete learned words instead. iPhone and iPad users should clear the dictionary or manage Gboard through iOS’s keyboard list, never Android’s app-storage menus. These are Gboard-specific actions, not a phone-wide factory reset.
