To restore Chrome’s settings on a computer, open More (⋮) > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults, then select Reset settings to confirm. This restores selected browser settings; it does not erase your whole Chrome profile or device.
Reset Chrome settings on a computer
- Open Chrome.
- Select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Select Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings to confirm.
Google’s steps are for Chrome on a computer. Menu labels or locations may differ between Chrome versions, so use the labels visible in your installed version. Google’s reset instructions describe this as a way to restore settings, including when an app or extension changed them without your knowledge.
What the reset changes—and what it leaves alone
The reset restores selected preferences and site settings. Google lists the default search engine, homepage and tabs, New Tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes among the items that change. Changes may also affect other devices where you are signed in to the same Chrome profile.
Google says saved bookmarks and passwords “won’t be deleted or changed.” This is not a full browser or profile wipe: some settings, including fonts and accessibility settings, are not removed. If you want a separate, fresh Chrome profile, Google recommends adding a new user rather than treating settings reset as a profile deletion.

Resetting settings is different from deleting browsing data
Restoring settings and clearing browsing data are separate actions. A settings reset changes selected browser preferences and site data; it is not the control for choosing to erase browsing history, cached files, or another specific data category.
To delete selected browsing data, open Chrome’s browsing-data controls, choose the categories and time range you want, and review those selections before confirming. Google documents this as a separate process in its instructions for deleting browsing data.

If settings change again or Reset settings will not open
Settings keep changing
An app or extension may have changed Chrome settings. Google also says Chrome checks settings at launch and may automatically restore selected settings when it detects a problem. If unwanted changes persist, follow Google’s advice to check for unwanted software. After resetting, enable only extensions you trust; Google’s guidance on unwanted software and settings changes explains this troubleshooting step.
The Settings menu is missing or will not open
If you cannot access Settings, Google’s reset guidance recommends uninstalling Chrome, downloading it again from google.com/chrome, and reinstalling it.
