Facebook does not document a single, global “reset recommendations” button. The reliable reset is a series of feedback signals: open Feed preferences, unfollow sources you no longer want, hide poor matches or choose Show fewer, and use Interested or Not interested as new posts appear. Repeat those choices consistently; they change what Facebook has evidence to show you, but they do not promise an instant or permanent clean slate.
The same approach applies to recommended posts and to short videos (now surfaced through the Reels tab and sometimes directly in Feed). Menu names can differ between the Facebook app, mobile browser and desktop site, so treat the labels below as the current functions to look for rather than a guaranteed pixel-by-pixel path.
What “resetting the Facebook algorithm” actually means
People usually mean one of three things when they ask how to reset Facebook: remove unwanted topics, stop seeing a particular person or Page, or make recommendations reflect new interests. Facebook’s public help guidance describes controls for all three, but not a one-click command that erases every recommendation signal and starts from zero.
Your practical reset is therefore a feedback process. Broad settings influence the mix of sources you see; source-level controls change whether a person, Page or group appears; post-level controls tell Facebook that a specific item was a bad or good match. The system can then use those signals when selecting later stories. Because the help guidance presents these as ongoing customization tools, expect gradual change rather than an immediate, permanent wipe.

Facebook says it wants you to “see the stories that matter to you most.”
Choose the right control before you start
Decide whether the problem is one post, one source or the overall mix. That choice prevents an unnecessarily drastic action.

Post-level feedback is available at the moment an unwanted item appears, while Feed preferences are the place to review broader choices. Exact reversibility and menu placement can vary by client, so check the current controls on the device you use most.

Feed preferences is Facebook’s main settings area for adjusting relevance. Facebook’s help guidance directs people there when they want to see more content they are interested in.
- Open Facebook and sign in to the account whose Feed you want to change.
- Open the account menu. On the website this is usually your profile picture; in the app it may be the Menu button or your profile picture.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then look for Feed or Feed preferences. The exact nesting and wording can differ between accounts and clients.
- Review the available source and priority controls. Remove or reduce sources that no longer represent your interests, and prioritize sources you consistently want to notice.
- Save any change if Facebook presents a Save button, then return to Feed and continue giving post-level feedback.
Do not assume that changing one preference instantly removes every related story already loaded in the app. Feed content can be cached or selected from several signals. Use the controls on new items as they appear and allow the mix to adjust over time.

Step 2: Unfollow people or Pages without unfriending
Unfollow is the cleanest way to stop a source’s posts from appearing in your Feed while preserving the connection. Facebook states that unfollowing a person or Page means you will not see that source’s posts in Feed anymore. The person or Page is not notified simply because you unfollowed it, and you do not need to delete the friendship or Page connection to use this option.
- Find a post from the person or Page in Feed, or open that profile or Page directly.
- Open the post’s options menu, commonly represented by three dots, or open the source’s Following/Friends controls.
- Select Unfollow and confirm if Facebook asks.
- Return to Feed and repeat for other sources that are no longer useful.
Unfollow is source-level, not topic-level. If a Page posts both useful and unwanted subjects, unfollowing removes all of its normal Feed posts rather than only one topic. For a lighter intervention, hide an individual story or choose Show fewer when that source appears.
Step 3: Hide a bad match immediately
When one story is the problem, act on that story instead of changing an entire relationship. Facebook’s controls let you hide a single post. The post disappears from your view and records a negative signal about that item.
- Open the options menu on the unwanted post.
- Choose Hide post or the equivalent hide-story command.
- If Facebook offers a follow-up reason, select the option that best describes the mismatch. Do not choose a stronger source-level action unless you want fewer posts from that source generally.
Use Hide when the source is acceptable but this particular story is not. If similar posts from the same person, Page or group continue to appear, use the menu’s Show fewer option instead. That gives Facebook a broader source-level signal without requiring an unfollow.
Step 4: Mark topics and posts Interested or Not interested
Interested and Not interested are explicit positive and negative feedback signals. They are useful when the problem is a subject, format or recommendation pattern rather than one identifiable source.

To request more of a subject
- Open the options menu on a post or recommendation that genuinely matches what you want.
- Choose Interested when that control is offered.
- Continue selecting relevant items instead of marking every post from a source indiscriminately. A precise positive signal is more useful than a random burst of clicks.
To request less of a subject
- Open the options menu on an unwanted recommendation.
- Choose Not interested.
- Use Hide or Show fewer as well when the item comes from a source you do not want to see repeatedly.
These choices are not a subscription or a permanent block. They tell Facebook how the item fits your current preferences. If your interests change, give new Interested signals and adjust Feed preferences rather than expecting one old choice to control every future recommendation.

Step 5: Retrain recommendations by repeating the signals
Retraining works best as a short daily habit rather than a one-time cleanup. Each new recommendation is an opportunity to distinguish what you want from what you do not.
- For the first few sessions, scan the first screen of Feed instead of scrolling automatically.
- Hide or mark Not interested on clear mismatches as soon as they appear.
- Choose Show fewer for sources that are repeatedly wrong but do not warrant a complete unfollow.
- Use Interested on several genuinely relevant subjects and formats.
- Unfollow sources you have definitively outgrown, then revisit Feed preferences to check broader choices.
- Repeat this review whenever the mix drifts. Do not promise yourself an exact number of days or clicks; Facebook publishes no fixed schedule for when these signals change your Feed.
Avoid contradictory feedback. Marking a topic Not interested and then spending time reacting to many posts about that same topic can provide mixed evidence. If you want to read a subject occasionally but not see it in recommendations, use source-level controls where available and limit engagement with unwanted examples.
Apply the same cleanup to Reels and short videos
Facebook renamed the Videos tab to the Reels tab in June 2025. Reels can also appear directly in Feed, so cleaning the main Feed does not automatically make every short-video recommendation relevant.
- Open the Reels tab or wait for a reel to appear in Feed.
- Open the reel’s options menu.
- Use Not interested for an unwanted subject or format, Hide when you only want to remove that item, and Show fewer when a creator or source appears too often.
- Use Interested on reels that accurately represent the topics and style you want more often.
If the same creator or topic appears in both Feed and Reels, give the appropriate feedback in each place. A reel’s presence in Feed means it should be treated as another recommendation surface, not as proof that your broader Feed preferences were ignored.

A practical reset plan for common situations
“Facebook keeps showing the same topics”
- Use Not interested on several representative posts, not just one duplicate.
- Check Feed preferences for old priority or source choices.
- Mark a small set of genuinely wanted topics Interested so the system has positive direction.
- If the repetition comes from one Page, choose Show fewer or Unfollow that Page.
“I want to stop seeing a Page but keep the connection”
Choose Unfollow from one of its posts or from the Page’s following controls. This removes its posts from your Feed without requiring you to unlike the Page or otherwise end the connection. If you only dislike a particular campaign or post, use Hide or Show fewer instead.
“One upsetting recommendation keeps returning”
- Hide the individual story immediately.
- Choose Not interested if the control is offered for the topic.
- Choose Show fewer if the same source continues supplying similar posts.
- Review Reels as well if the recommendation is a short video appearing in both surfaces.
“My Feed changed after I used these controls”
That is the expected trade-off of stronger feedback. Unfollow and Show fewer reduce a source’s visibility; Not interested reduces similar recommendations. If the result is too narrow, use Interested on relevant posts and revisit Feed preferences to restore useful sources.

The menu label is different
Facebook serves multiple clients and account layouts. Look for functions named Feed preferences, Hide post, Show fewer, Unfollow, Interested or Not interested even if they appear under a different menu. Update the app or try the desktop site if a control is missing from one client, but do not assume every account receives the same labels at the same time.
A hidden post appears again
Hide applies to the selected story; it is not documented as a permanent block on every similar story. Use Not interested for the topic and Show fewer or Unfollow for the source when the pattern continues.

Unfollow stops that person’s or Page’s posts from your Feed, but other accounts, groups or recommended material can discuss the same subject. Mark those separate items Not interested, and review Feed preferences for broader source choices.

The app and website do not match
Use the client where you spend most of your time and verify the current wording there. Facebook’s public help pages cover multiple clients, so an instruction that is accurate for the website may be arranged differently in the app or mobile browser.
You want a guaranteed blank slate
The reviewed Facebook help guidance does not document a global reset that erases all recommendation history. Do not trust a third-party tool or browser extension that promises one. Use the official controls above and treat the result as gradual customization.
What to expect after the reset
These controls change visibility and feedback, not your account’s existence or your underlying friendships. Unfollow preserves the connection. Hide removes a story. Show fewer reduces a source. Interested and Not interested steer similar recommendations. Feed preferences provide the broader review area. Because Facebook does not publish a universal timing or score threshold for these signals, no responsible guide can promise that a particular number of actions will produce a perfectly reset Feed.

The most dependable pattern is consistent, specific feedback: remove clearly unwanted sources, act on poor matches while they are visible, and positively mark the subjects you really want. Revisit the settings when your interests change, and apply the same process to Reels that appear in Feed.
