There is no single hard-reset sequence for every LG device. First identify whether you mean a phone or a TV and check its exact model: an LG phone’s recovery-mode factory reset can erase personal files, an LG TV’s menu reset removes apps and settings, and a TV power-cycle is a separate troubleshooting step that does not use the factory-reset menu.
Before resetting: identify the device and the result you want
Check the product label, model information, or the device’s settings to identify the exact LG model. The procedures below are not interchangeable, and LG phone recovery-key combinations can differ by model. LG’s cited instructions are from LG USA; if you are outside the United States or have a different model, use the support guide for your device and region.
- Phone that will not start or needs its data wiped: look up its model-specific recovery-mode factory-reset instructions.
- TV that you want to restore to initial settings: use the settings-menu route for its webOS generation.
- TV with no picture or sound: try the separate power-cycle procedure first; it is not a factory reset.
How to factory-reset an LG phone in recovery mode
The documented key sequence below is for the LG VS876, not a universal LG-phone shortcut. LG’s VS876 user guide says to turn the phone off, then hold Volume Down and Power/Lock together. Release the buttons when the System recovery screen appears. Use the volume keys to highlight Factory data reset, select it with Power/Lock, and confirm the reset on screen.

The VS876 guide specifically warns that this includes pictures, videos, and music saved in internal memory. Back up what you can before confirming. Do not assume the same buttons or menu names apply to another LG phone: an LG LS740 user guide documents a different recovery-key sequence. If your model’s official guide is unavailable or the recovery screen differs, stop rather than guessing at an option that may wipe data.
How to factory-reset an LG TV from its settings
LG’s TV menu path depends on the set’s webOS generation. The routes below are from LG’s reset-to-initial-settings guidance; LG notes that menu settings can vary by model.

A TV factory reset removes installed apps and personal settings. LG says not to unplug or turn off the set while the reset is running. Some 2024-or-later models offer Reset all except network settings, which can retain the current Wi-Fi connection while resetting other settings; availability is model-dependent, so do not expect to see it on every TV.

If the remote is missing or its Settings controls do not work, the menu procedure may not be accessible as described. Check the TV’s model-specific support guide for available controls and compatible accessories rather than assuming any replacement remote will work.
How to power-cycle an LG TV with no picture or sound
For a TV that has no picture or sound, LG documents a power-cycle that is different from restoring the TV to initial settings. Follow the steps in LG’s no-picture/no-sound troubleshooting guidance:

- Disconnect the TV’s power cable.
- Press and hold the physical Power button on the TV for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on the TV.
This procedure is a power reset, not a settings-menu factory reset: it does not follow the Reset to Initial Settings menu route.
