After installing a new water filter, reset the refrigerator’s filter indicator. On many Samsung models, press and hold the panel’s Filter Reset control for three seconds. The exact control varies: some refrigerators use another button or a button combination, while Family Hub models use touchscreen menus. If your panel does not match the steps below, follow the manual for your exact model.
Reset the filter light using your refrigerator’s control type
Standard control panel
- Find a button labeled Filter Reset (3 sec), or look for a secondary function label indicating a filter reset.
- Press and hold the specified control for three seconds, until the indicator turns off or changes.
- If there is no Filter Reset label, check your model’s manual. Samsung Canada says that Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water can serve as the reset control on some models, and some require two buttons. Don’t try arbitrary combinations if the indicator does not respond.
Samsung describes the indicator as a six-month timer and advises resetting it after installing a new filter. Resetting only restarts the reminder; it does not replace a filter that is due. Samsung US explains the filter indicator and replacement process, while Samsung Canada lists model-dependent reset controls.
Family Hub touchscreen
- Open Apps.
- Select Fridge Manager, then Fridge Settings.
- Open Water Filter and tap Reset.
- If prompted, confirm by tapping Proceed.
Menu labels can vary by region or software version. Samsung Canada also documents a separate route for the older RF4289 and RSG309 models: open Settings, select Water Filter, advance to page 4/4, press and hold “Reset the water filter” until the status changes, then save. These legacy directions are specific to those models, not a general Family Hub procedure. See Samsung Canada’s model-specific instructions.
If the filter light stays on after resetting
- Check the cartridge installation. Make sure the new filter is fully inserted and locked in place. Incorrect installation can cause problems, according to Samsung Canada’s troubleshooting guide.
- Verify the reset method for your exact refrigerator. Samsung’s instructions differ by control panel and model. Find the model number and consult its manual rather than repeating an unverified button combination. The Samsung Canada guide covers several control types.
- Check whether your refrigerator has a filter. Samsung UK says some RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025 may show a filter alert even though they have no water filter. For the affected UK models, Samsung describes updating software through SmartThings or dismissing the alert. Confirm that advice applies to your model and region in Samsung UK’s support article.
- Address slow flow or unusual taste after replacement. Check that the cartridge is fully locked, then dispense more water to flush air or carbon particles, as advised by Samsung Canada.
Confirm the replacement filter fits your refrigerator
Filter compatibility depends on the refrigerator model. Samsung’s US guide names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filter types; that list does not make them interchangeable or universal. Check the number printed on the installed cartridge, your refrigerator’s model number, or its manual before buying. Samsung Canada also provides a filter finder.

Samsung advises using its filters and warns against third-party replacements. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not independent proof about the performance of every third-party filter. See Samsung’s US replacement guide for its named cartridge types and recommendation.

Samsung recommends replacing the filter every six months. Its US support page describes the indicator as a six-month timer and says to reset it each time a new filter is installed. Samsung Canada notes that local water quality and dispenser use can affect when replacement is needed, and recommends checking water flow if needed. Follow the instructions for your refrigerator and region if they differ from a general schedule.

After replacing the cartridge, flush the system and discard the water as directed for your model. Samsung’s regional guidance specifies different procedures: the US guide says to dispense several gallons for its described cartridge process; the Canadian guide gives about seven minutes, or 10–12 large glasses; and the Australian guide gives about 3 L for one internal-filter procedure. These figures describe different regional instructions and are not a single universal amount. Use your refrigerator’s manual when the amounts or procedures conflict: Samsung US, Samsung Canada, and Samsung Australia.
