After replacing the water filter, reset the refrigerator’s reminder using the control or touchscreen route for your exact model. Many Samsung models use a three-second button hold, but the button varies; Family Hub and some older touchscreen models use menus. Resetting the light restarts its timer—it does not replace or refresh the filter.
Reset the filter reminder using your refrigerator’s control type
First install the correct replacement filter. Then identify the control layout and follow the matching instructions below. Samsung’s button labels and menu paths vary by model, so don’t assume one reset method applies to every refrigerator.
Standard control panel
- Look for a button labeled Filter Reset (3 sec), or a button with that function printed as a secondary label.
- Press and hold the indicated control for three seconds. Depending on the model, the filter indicator may turn off, change color, or return to its normal state.
- If there is no dedicated reset label, Samsung says common controls include Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water. Some models require holding two buttons together. Use the combination specified in the instructions for your model or its user manual rather than trying combinations at random.
Family Hub touchscreen
From the home screen, tap Apps > Fridge Manager > Fridge Settings > Water Filter > Reset > Proceed. This resets the reminder and starts its timer again.

- Open Settings > Water Filter.
- Tap Next until you reach page 4/4.
- Touch and hold Reset the water filter until the filter status changes, then tap Save.
Models with arrow-button navigation
On some models, use the arrow buttons to open More Options, then select Filter Reset. If the names or screens differ, find the exact procedure in Samsung’s reset instructions or the manual for your refrigerator.

Choose the right replacement filter before resetting
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same cartridge. Check your refrigerator’s model number and manual, or read the number on the existing filter, before ordering. Samsung’s filter finder can help identify a filter by refrigerator model. Samsung recommends genuine filters, but whichever filter you choose must match the refrigerator’s model and filter requirements; a generic compatibility claim alone does not establish fit.
Replace the filter and flush the water system
Samsung recommends replacing the filter about every six months. The indicator is a timer and guideline, not a measurement of water quality: actual timing can vary with water quality and use. A noticeable difference in water flow with the filter installed compared with without it may also indicate that the filter needs replacement.

Follow the instructions for your refrigerator and cartridge type. Samsung’s replacement guidance describes shutting off the water supply, relieving pressure by dispensing water, removing and installing the cartridge, confirming it locks, restoring the supply, and checking for leaks. The handling details depend on the filter and model.
After installation, flush and discard water as directed for your filter and refrigerator. Samsung Canada’s guide specifies about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses for the filter types it covers; that instruction is not established as universal for every model or region.

Troubleshoot a reminder or water-flow problem
The reset control does not respond
Confirm that the replacement filter is installed and that you are following the instructions for the exact model. Because button functions and combinations differ, consult the user manual if the three-second hold or touchscreen route above does not match your panel.
Water flow is slow after replacement
Check that the filter is fully installed and locked, then dispense additional water to clear air from the system. Samsung also notes that a change in flow can be a sign the filter needs replacement.

The water tastes or smells unusual, or the filter leaks
If taste or smell is unusual after replacement, flush more water. If the filter leaks, reinstall it fully. Samsung says continued leakage may mean the O-ring is damaged and recommends using a new genuine filter.
A filter warning appears even though the refrigerator has no filter
This is not a reason for every owner to buy a filter. Samsung UK identifies a software issue affecting certain RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025, with an update route through SmartThings. Check Samsung’s UK guidance to confirm whether your model is included and follow its update instructions.
The indicator changes color
Color meanings are model-specific. Samsung’s UK guidance describes one model family in which blue indicates a reset, purple appears after six months, and red indicates the replacement point. Do not apply that sequence to other Samsung refrigerators without checking their manual.
