To reset a Canon camera battery, turn the camera off, remove the main battery, wait 30 seconds, then reinstall it and test the camera. Canon recommends this basic reseat for a camera that is not working properly. Removing a backup/date-time battery is a different, more disruptive step: it can clear camera settings, and the access method depends on the model.
Reseat the main battery first
- Turn the camera off. Remove the main battery according to the handling instructions in your camera’s manual.
- Wait 30 seconds. Canon USA Support gives this interval before reinserting the batteries in its general troubleshooting guidance.
- Reinstall the battery and turn the camera on. If it still will not start or the same error remains, continue with the relevant checks below.
This procedure is a low-impact reset of the battery connection; it is not the same as resetting all camera settings. See Canon USA Support’s battery troubleshooting guidance.
If the camera keeps asking for the date and time
Set the date and time in the camera menu. If the camera repeatedly loses them, the backup/date-time battery may be depleted. Some Canon cameras retain date and time settings for a limited period after the main battery is removed, but the duration is model-specific. A Canon support page last updated in 2014 says settings may be retained for about three weeks on the model it covers; do not assume that period applies to your camera. The same page describes about four hours to charge the built-in date/time battery under its stated conditions: with a charged main battery installed or the specified AC adapter kit connected, and the camera off.
Removing a backup/date-time battery can cause a full reset and clear settings, including the date and time. Not every Canon camera has a user-removable backup cell, and the access method varies. Check your exact model’s manual rather than opening the camera or following instructions written for another model. See Canon’s date and time guidance for the model-specific details it covers.

If the battery will not charge
Use the charging method and compatible battery listed in your camera’s manual. Battery families, charger behavior, and warning indicators differ across Canon models; a battery that fits is not necessarily a supported match.
- Check the battery and charger: Reinstall the battery in the charger and follow the model’s instructions for interpreting its indicator. A blinking warning can indicate a protection response, a battery or charger issue, or a communication problem.
- Consider temperature: On the EOS R7, Canon says a battery that is too hot or too cold may not charge until it adjusts to ambient temperature.
- Confirm compatibility: Canon’s EOS R7 guide lists LP-E6P, LP-E6NH, LP-E6N, and LP-E6 packs; its EOS R50 guide specifies LP-E17; its EOS R5 Mark II guide specifies LP-E6P. These are model-specific examples, not a compatibility list for all Canon cameras.
For the exact indicator meanings and recommended recovery steps, consult the guide for your camera: EOS R7 troubleshooting, EOS R50 troubleshooting, or EOS R5 Mark II troubleshooting. For example, the EOS R7 guide says a rapidly blinking orange charger lamp indicates a protection stop that may stem from a charger or battery problem or failed communication. It advises unplugging, reseating the battery, waiting a few minutes, and reconnecting. Do not apply that sequence or indicator interpretation to a different model unless its manual says to.

When to seek service
If recharging and reseating the battery do not resolve the error, Canon says the battery may need replacement or the camera may need a service evaluation. Follow the troubleshooting guide for your exact model; if its recommended steps do not fix the problem, contact Canon support or an authorized service provider.
