To research a rare video game, treat its ownership history, physical authenticity, condition, grading, and functionality as separate questions. Identify the exact release, assemble dated evidence of its chain of custody, compare its physical features with copies of the same release, corroborate historical claims, and verify any grading certification with the issuer. No single seller story, visual clue, grade, or archive search can establish all of those things.
What provenance and authenticity mean
Provenance is the documented history of an item’s ownership and transfers. It answers questions such as who owned the game, when they acquired it, and how it moved from one owner to the next. A dated receipt or a photograph tied to a known collection can support part of that history; a seller’s account, by itself, is an assertion rather than independent documentation.
Authenticity concerns whether the object is what it is represented to be: for example, the claimed game, release, packaging, or factory-sealed copy. That is not the same as a grade, which describes condition under a grading service’s standards. Nor does authentication necessarily establish that a cartridge or disc works, that the packaging contains the claimed contents, or that the item’s ownership history is complete.

Keep these questions distinct when buying or evaluating a collection. A genuine game can have a weak or undocumented provenance. An item with a persuasive ownership history can still be misidentified, altered, or resealed. A slab or label records a grading service’s opinion within its stated scope; it does not independently fill every gap in either the physical examination or the chain of custody.

Start by identifying the exact copy
Before searching for comparable examples or evaluating a seller’s claim, write down exactly what the object is said to be. A title alone is not enough: different platforms, regions, editions, publishers, packaging types, or variants may look similar while having different expected features.
- Record the title and platform, including the specific system or format when relevant.
- Record the region, edition, publisher, and any claimed variant or special release.
- State whether the item is loose, complete-in-box, or sealed. For a complete-in-box claim, list the components the seller says are included.
- Note whether the copy is raw or in a grading holder, and record any certification number and label description.
- Record the seller’s exact claims about release, ownership, rarity, and condition separately from facts you have independently confirmed.
Photograph all sides, labels, seams, inserts, and visible damage before handling or opening the item. Preserve the original image files and their dates if possible. This creates a record of what you actually examined and helps you compare later images without relying on memory. Do not open a sealed item just to investigate it: opening changes its state and may affect its value. If an examination would require opening or disassembly, decide whether that is appropriate for the item and consult a qualified specialist first.
Build a documented chain of custody
Ask for records that connect the present seller to earlier owners or transactions. Useful evidence may include dated receipts, prior listings, correspondence, photographs, estate or collection records, and transfer documentation. The value of a record depends on what it establishes: a receipt can document a sale, while a photograph may show that a particular-looking item was in a collection at a particular time. Neither automatically proves every earlier link or the object’s current physical state.
Compare records instead of collecting a story
Make a simple timeline with each claimed transfer, the date, the person or organization involved, and the supporting record. Check that descriptions, dates, and visible details agree across independent materials. If an old listing describes a sealed copy with a particular label or packaging feature, compare it with current photographs. A mismatch may have an innocent explanation, but it needs explaining before you rely on the history.

Record gaps plainly. If the available documents establish ownership only from a certain year, say that; do not extend the documented history backward based on an unverified story. Also distinguish a document that supports a claim from one that merely repeats it. Several listings copied from the same original description do not necessarily amount to several independent confirmations.
Treat pedigrees as claims with limits
A collection pedigree or grading label may identify an asserted prior collection, but it is not a substitute for the underlying transfer records. CGC’s Guarantee, accessed October 11, 2026, says pedigrees are not guaranteed. Read the service’s written terms and determine what evidence supports the attribution rather than treating the label as proof of an unbroken ownership chain.
Compare physical features with the right examples
For a claimed sealed copy, a visual comparison is useful only when the reference is genuinely comparable. Seek examples of the same title, platform, region, edition, publisher, and packaging type. Differences between releases can make a feature that looks suspicious on one version entirely ordinary on another.

Compare the construction and placement of seals, box printing, labels, and included components. Use clear images from multiple known examples where possible, and note the source and identification of each comparison copy. A single online photograph may be misidentified, show a different variant, or fail to reveal a detail that matters. The aim is not to find an image that resembles the seller’s copy; it is to test whether the claimed copy’s features are consistent with the specific release.

CGC’s December 30, 2022 guidance on reseals notes that seal types vary by console and publisher, recommends comparison with known copies, and warns that third-party seals are common on resealed games. It also says the service rejects submissions showing evidence that a used game was resealed afterward. Those points make comparison important, but they do not turn a visible clue into a definitive diagnosis. Genuine-looking materials can be used in a reseal, while wear or an unusual seam may have more than one explanation.
- Document the feature you are checking, such as seam placement or label printing, rather than writing only “looks right.”
- Compare the same location and angle across multiple examples when available.
- Separate observed facts from interpretations: “the seam is on this edge” is an observation; “therefore factory sealed” is a conclusion that needs stronger support.
- Escalate material inconsistencies to a specialist or grading service instead of attempting a definitive judgment from photos alone.
Use archives to corroborate historical claims
Contemporary magazines, catalogs, press kits, promotional material, and archival records can help verify release details or provide context for an ownership claim. The Video Game History Foundation describes library and digital archive holdings that can support this kind of inquiry. Its Library help and Digital Archive help pages, accessed October 11, 2026, explain the collections and search resources; its January 30, 2025 announcement described the library opening in early access.
Search for specific claims rather than expecting an archive to certify an individual copy. A catalog may help establish that an edition or promotion existed; it cannot prove that the seller’s object is that edition. A period photograph might support the presence of an item in a collection, but only if the item can be identified and the date and context are credible.

Therefore, a missing search result does not prove that a release, promotion, or ownership event never existed. Record what you searched, which collection or catalog you used, and what the result actually says. Treat an archive hit as corroboration for the particular fact it documents, not as a blanket authenticity finding.

Verify a grading holder and understand its label
If the game is in a slab, use the issuing service’s official certification lookup rather than relying only on a seller’s screenshot or a QR image. For CGC Video Games, enter the certification number in its official lookup or scan the holder’s QR code. The lookup returns the description and grade and, according to the service, can help check whether its holder is genuine and untampered. Compare the returned record with the item in front of you, including the title and other identifying details, and inspect the holder for signs of alteration.
A matching online record is evidence that a certification record exists; it is not a replacement for checking whether the physical item matches that record. If the number returns a different description, the holder appears altered, or the record cannot be verified, pause the transaction and ask the service or seller for clarification before proceeding.
Read rejection or qualification language carefully
CGC’s December 28, 2022 explanation of rejection labels distinguishes findings such as counterfeit, resealed, ineligible type, and questionable authenticity. These terms do not mean the same thing. A counterfeit finding is not interchangeable with a reseal finding, and an ineligible item is not necessarily a judgment that it is counterfeit. Read the exact label and the service’s description of its meaning instead of reducing every nonstandard result to “fake” or “authentic.”

Compare evidence and protections before buying
Evaluate the deal along separate axes. Strong evidence in one category does not erase a weakness in another, and the appropriate level of confidence depends on both the price at risk and the importance of the claim.

Ask the seller for the written return terms and any authenticity or provenance policy before paying. Save the listing, photographs, messages, invoice, and payment records in their original form. If the item is auctioned, read that auction’s own terms rather than assuming another auction house or seller uses the same deadline. Heritage Auctions’ terms accessed October 11, 2026, for example, say authenticity or provenance challenges must be submitted in writing within 30 days after the auction. That is an example of one set of terms, not a universal deadline.
When a claim matters to the purchase, put the question to the seller in writing and ask for evidence tied to the specific copy. A vague assurance such as “from an old collection” is less useful than a dated record that identifies the item. If the seller cannot substantiate a claim, price the item and make the decision as though that claim remains unverified.
What rarity data can—and cannot—tell you
Rarity claims often mix several different ideas: how many copies were produced, how many survive, how often copies appear for sale, how many are in a particular condition, and how many have been reissued. These are not interchangeable. A low number of current listings does not, by itself, prove a low original print run or authenticate a specific copy.
A 2023 Survey of the Video Game Reissue Market in the United States by the Software Preservation Network and Video Game History Foundation reported that 13 percent of classic video games published in the United States were in release. The survey describes a sample of 1,500 games and says its results were accurate through April 15, 2023. This is context about commercial availability and reissues; it is not evidence that any individual object is genuine, rare, or from a particular ownership history.
A practical research record to keep
Keep a concise file for each candidate game so that your conclusion can be revisited or shared with a dealer, specialist, grading service, or auction house. Preserve the evidence, not just your final judgment.
- Identity: stated title, platform, region, edition, publisher, variant claim, packaging type, and certification number if applicable.
- Condition record: dated photographs of all sides, labels, seams, inserts, visible damage, and holder details.
- Provenance timeline: each documented transfer, its date, the evidence supporting it, and any gap or unresolved inconsistency.
- Comparisons: the identity and source of each reference copy, the feature compared, and whether the comparison is direct or based on images.
- Historical corroboration: archive or publication searched, the specific claim it supports, and the date or issue information.
- Service and sale terms: lookup result, exact label language, relevant guarantee coverage, return terms, notice requirements, and deadlines.
- Open questions: list unresolved claims explicitly rather than converting uncertainty into a positive assertion.
This record makes it easier to see where confidence comes from. It also prevents a seller’s description, a grading label, or an appealing historical story from silently standing in for evidence that has not been found.
