The most reliable way to research Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) is to build your own view from the company’s filings, segment economics, cash generation, balance sheet and valuation, then use analyst ratings as a comparison with outside expectations. Start with the FY2025 Form 10-K, update the picture with the latest Form 10-Q and earnings Form 8-K, and write down what evidence would confirm or disprove your thesis. As of October 13, 2026, the latest reported quarter visible in the reviewed official materials was Q2 2026; those materials gave the July 28 release date but not the quarter’s financial figures.
What researching SHW independently involves
An analyst rating is a conclusion, not an investment process. A useful SHW investigation asks how the company makes money, which operating drivers are changing, whether accounting earnings convert into cash, how management deploys that cash, and what price would compensate you for the risks. The conclusion should be yours even when you use analysts’ estimates as a useful record of market expectations.
Sherwin-Williams develops, manufactures, distributes and sells paints, coatings and related products. Its NYSE ticker is SHW. The company reports three operating segments, each with a different customer base and economic sensitivity, so a consolidated revenue headline is not enough to understand the stock.

| Document | What to extract | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 Form 10-K | Business description, segment disclosures, audited statements, debt, accounting policies, legal and regulatory matters, risk factors and management discussion | Use it as the annual baseline and the source for definitions and multi-year context. |
| Latest Form 10-Q | Year-to-date sales and profit changes, liquidity, debt movements, working capital and updated risk discussion | Replace stale annual assumptions with the latest reported operating evidence. |
| Latest earnings Form 8-K | Quarterly release, management’s narrative, outlook and reconciliations for any adjusted measures | Use it to understand the quarter, but reconcile every non-GAAP measure to GAAP. |
| Investor-relations release calendar | Filing and earnings-release dates | As of October 13, 2026, Q2 2026 results had been released July 28 and Q3 results were scheduled for October 27. Re-check the calendar before publishing or trading. |
Sherwin-Williams says its 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K reports are available free through its investor-relations website after filing or furnishing them to the SEC. For every number you copy, record the period, unit, GAAP or non-GAAP status and comparison period. Never treat an adjusted growth rate as interchangeable with reported growth.

A practical filing-reading sequence
- Read the 10-K business and segment sections first. Learn the customers, channels, geographic exposure and accounting definitions before looking at the income statement.
- Read management’s discussion alongside the statements. Mark explanations for price, volume, product mix, currency, acquisitions, divestitures and costs.
- Read debt, liquidity and commitments. Note maturities, rates, covenants, pension or environmental obligations and planned capital spending.
- Read the risk factors and legal disclosures. Separate a risk the company explicitly identifies from an inference you make about its financial effect.
- Move to the latest 10-Q and 8-K. Update the baseline before forming an opinion; the annual report cannot capture subsequent changes.
Build a segment-by-segment operating model
Analyze each segment on its own before combining the results. For each, track net sales, segment profit, margin, volume, price and mix when disclosed. Then ask whether a change reflects recurring end-market demand or a temporary accounting, acquisition, currency or cost effect.
Paint Stores Group
Paint Stores Group operates company-owned specialty stores in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. It serves architectural and industrial contractors as well as do-it-yourself homeowners. The FY2025 filing listed 4,853 stores at year-end 2025.
For this segment, examine same-store sales, store count and productivity, contractor versus DIY demand, repaint and repair activity, new construction exposure, and the relationship between price realization and physical volume. A sales increase caused only by price has different implications from one caused by more gallons sold or a favorable product mix. Check whether margin movement follows raw-material costs, labor, freight, store expenses or mix.

Consumer Brands Group
Consumer Brands Group manufactures and distributes branded and private-label architectural paints and related categories through third-party retailers and other channels, and it has stores in Latin America. Approximately 63% of this group’s total sales in the 2025 filing were intersegment transfers, primarily sold through Paint Stores Group.
That transfer percentage is an analytical warning: segment revenue is not the same as external consolidated demand. Avoid adding segment sales together as if every dollar were an outside customer sale. Instead, use the segment disclosures to understand manufacturing, brand and channel economics, then reconcile intersegment amounts to consolidated revenue. Investigate whether changes come from retail sell-through, retailer inventory, pricing, currency or product mix.

Performance Coatings Group
Performance Coatings Group serves industrial, automotive refinish, protective and marine, coil, packaging and other coatings markets worldwide. It distributes through company branches and external channels.
Map each end market to its own cycle. Automotive refinish, industrial production, packaging demand and protective or marine projects can recover at different speeds. Look for disclosed organic sales, volume and price effects, currency translation and acquisition contributions. A stable consolidated result can hide weakness in one end market and strength in another, so follow segment profit and margin as well as sales.
Questions to ask after every segment release
- Did reported growth come from volume, price, mix, acquisitions, currency or a combination?
- Are margins changing because of operating leverage, input costs, restructuring, integration expenses or an unusual comparison?
- Is the change visible in external demand, or mainly in intersegment activity?
- What leading indicator or next filing would confirm that the change is durable?
Establish the FY2025 financial baseline
The FY2025 Form 10-K supplies a common starting point. These are company-reported figures for the year, not a current forecast or a live market valuation.
| Measure | FY2025 value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $23.574 billion | The Sherwin-Williams Company, FY2025. |
| Diluted net income per share | $10.26 | GAAP diluted EPS reported for FY2025. |
| Adjusted diluted net income per share | $11.43 | Company-adjusted measure; use the filing’s reconciliation before relying on it. |
| Net operating cash flow | $3.452 billion | FY2025 operating cash flow. |
| Five-year adjusted EPS CAGR | 6.9% | Company investor overview, data as of December 31, 2025. |
| Five-year average same-store sales growth | 5.6% | Company investor overview, data as of December 31, 2025. |
| Five-year net operating cash | $14.3 billion | Company investor overview, cumulative figure as of December 31, 2025. |
Keep GAAP and adjusted EPS in separate columns in your spreadsheet. The difference is not automatically a problem, but it tells you to inspect the adjustments, their recurrence and their cash consequences. Likewise, a five-year company highlight is a useful lead, not a substitute for reading the underlying statements.
Test earnings quality and cash conversion
Start by comparing net income with operating cash flow over several years rather than judging one quarter. Then explain the bridge between them.

Working-capital drivers
Inspect receivables, inventories and payables. Rising receivables can indicate growth, collection pressure or a change in customer mix. Inventory increases may support expected demand, reflect deliberate stocking or signal slower sell-through. Payables and other operating liabilities can temporarily boost cash without improving underlying profitability.

Investment and financing demands
Subtract capital expenditures conceptually from operating cash to understand cash available for acquisitions, dividends, repurchases and debt reduction. Read acquisition cash payments separately from routine capital spending. Then check debt service and interest payments; a business can report healthy operating cash while having less flexibility because of financing obligations.
Adjusted-measure discipline
For each adjusted EPS or profit measure, list every add-back and ask whether it is genuinely unusual. Reconcile management’s presentation to GAAP, identify whether the item consumed cash, and check whether similar adjustments recur. Do not use adjusted EPS growth as proof of operating improvement until the cash-flow and segment evidence supports it.
Examine capital allocation and balance-sheet capacity
Track debt maturities, interest expense, acquisition financing, share repurchases, dividends and investment needs in one schedule. Connect each use of cash to the operating results that are supposed to fund it.
2026 interest-expense issue to monitor
The FY2025 report said management expected 2026 interest expense to increase by approximately $85 million. The cited reasons were refinanced maturities, term-loan interest related to the Suvinil acquisition, headquarters and research-and-development-center costs, and higher refinancing rates. This is a forecast stated in the FY2025 filing, not a verified 2026 outcome. Compare it with the latest 10-Q and subsequent filings before using it in a model.

Dividends, acquisitions and repurchases
The investor page highlighted 47 consecutive years of dividend increases, more than 50 acquisitions since 2000, and $14.3 billion of five-year net operating cash, with figures identified as of December 31, 2025. Treat these as starting points for verification. Read the filings for the definition of each measure, acquisition consideration, returns or integration evidence, dilution, repurchase prices and the cash left after dividends and capital expenditures.
A long dividend record does not by itself establish future safety. Test coverage against normalized free cash flow, debt maturities, interest costs and the company’s need to fund stores, plants, technology, environmental work and acquisitions.
Turn risks into testable scenarios
Use the 10-K risk factors and management discussion to define scenarios rather than listing generic dangers. For every scenario, specify the affected segment, measurable variable, time horizon and disconfirming evidence.
| Scenario | What could change | Evidence to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural or housing slowdown | Lower contractor, repaint, repair or new-construction volume, especially in Paint Stores Group | Same-store sales, disclosed volume, store productivity and segment margin. |
| Input-cost pressure | Raw materials, freight or labor reduce gross or segment margins | Price realization versus volume, margin commentary and subsequent cost trends. |
| Pricing resistance | Price increases fail to offset costs, or volume falls after pricing | Reported price and volume split, mix and customer/channel commentary. |
| Foreign-exchange movement | Translation reduces reported sales or profit in international operations | Constant-currency or currency explanations in releases and filings. |
| Acquisition integration | Expected synergies do not appear, or integration costs and debt rise | Acquired-sales contribution, margins, one-time costs, leverage and cash flow. |
| Interest burden | Refinancing and acquisition debt reduce earnings and financial flexibility | Debt maturities, average rates, interest expense and covenant headroom. |
| Environmental or regulatory obligations | Compliance spending, remediation or operational restrictions increase costs | Contingencies, capital spending, legal disclosures and management updates. |
Separate facts directly identified by Sherwin-Williams from your own inference about how a risk affects value. For example, a macroeconomic housing assumption is not a company fact unless a filing or reported operating measure connects it to SHW.

Use more than one valuation lens
- Price-to-earnings. State whether you use GAAP diluted EPS or the company’s adjusted EPS, identify the period and explain every normalization. Do not mix a current price with an outdated annual EPS without labeling the mismatch.
- Enterprise value relative to operating earnings or cash flow. Define enterprise value, debt, cash and the operating metric consistently. Align the measurement date and treatment of leases or other obligations.
- Scenario-based discounted cash flow. Model revenue growth, segment margins, working capital, capital expenditures, taxes, acquisitions, interest and terminal assumptions. Show how changing each major assumption changes the result.
Build a transparent scenario table
| Input | Downside case | Base case | Upside case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | Use a defensible low-growth or contraction assumption tied to disclosed volume risks. | Use a documented continuation or recovery assumption. | Use a documented improvement assumption, not an unsupported market statistic. |
| Segment margins | Reflect cost pressure, weaker mix or poor operating leverage. | Reflect the latest sustainable margin evidence. | Reflect demonstrated pricing, mix or productivity gains. |
| Interest cost | Include refinancing and acquisition-rate pressure. | Use the latest disclosed debt and rate information. | Assume improvement only when maturities or rates provide evidence. |
| Terminal assumption | Use a conservative long-run growth or exit multiple. | Use a supportable steady-state assumption. | Stress-test rather than rely on a permanently high multiple. |
Label the date and source of every price and estimate. If you compare SHW with another coatings company, align fiscal periods, accounting measures, end-market mix, acquisition contribution, cash conversion, capital expenditure, debt, interest costs, dividends, repurchases and valuation definitions before drawing a conclusion.
Use analyst ratings as a test, not a substitute
Collect the rating, target price, earnings horizon, estimates, valuation method and the assumptions behind each analyst’s view. Then ask what evidence would make that analyst raise or cut the estimate. A rating can reveal the market’s embedded expectations even when you disagree with the recommendation.
- Compare analyst revenue and EPS assumptions with the segment-level volume, price and margin evidence you found.
- Check whether the estimate uses GAAP or adjusted earnings and how recurring charges are treated.
- Identify whether the target depends on a higher valuation multiple, faster growth, margin recovery or lower interest costs.
- Look for disagreements about acquisitions, currency, housing exposure and end-market timing.
- Record the date of every rating; targets change as filings arrive.
Your independent check is a reproducible model tied to filed results. If your value differs from consensus, explain which operating assumption differs and what future disclosure would resolve the disagreement.

- Set the information date. Record the latest 10-Q, 8-K and market price date. As of October 13, 2026, Q2 2026 was the latest reported quarter in the reviewed official material, and Q3 was scheduled for October 27.
- Update the segment sheet. Enter sales, profit, margin, price, volume, mix, currency and acquisition effects for all three segments.
- Reconcile earnings. Bridge GAAP results to adjusted measures and mark recurring adjustments.
- Update cash and debt. Roll forward operating cash, capital expenditures, acquisitions, dividends, repurchases, maturities and interest.
- Refresh the risk dashboard. Mark each scenario as confirmed, weakened, unchanged or untested, with the filing line or disclosed metric that supports the status.
- Revalue the shares. Use the same period and accounting definitions for price-to-earnings, enterprise-value measures and any discounted cash-flow cases.
- Compare with analysts last. Document where their assumptions differ from yours and define the evidence that would change your mind.
Common mistakes that produce a misleading SHW view
- Using only the headline revenue number. It can hide price-versus-volume effects, acquisitions, currency and intersegment transfers.
- Adding segment sales without eliminating intersegment activity. Consumer Brands Group’s approximately 63% intersegment-transfer figure in the 2025 filing demonstrates why segment revenue is not consolidated external demand.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted EPS. The two figures answer different questions; keep the reconciliation visible.
- Calling a forecast a result. The approximately $85 million 2026 interest increase was management’s expectation in the FY2025 report, not a realized figure.
- Treating company highlights as independent industry evidence. The five-year growth and cash figures are issuer-selected metrics that require definitions and filing-level verification.
- Ignoring financing needs. Acquisitions, refinancing, environmental work, stores and research facilities can compete with dividends and repurchases for cash.
- Comparing peers on mismatched bases. Different fiscal periods, segment mixes, leverage and adjusted-earnings definitions can make a cheap-looking multiple meaningless.
- Publishing an undated target. A price target without its date, earnings period, method and assumptions cannot be independently checked.
What a finished research note should contain
Before acting, make sure your note has a dated source list, a three-segment operating summary, GAAP-to-adjusted reconciliations, a multi-year cash-conversion view, debt and interest schedule, scenario risks, at least two valuation methods and a comparison with analyst assumptions. End with the specific evidence that would invalidate your thesis. That structure turns SHW research into an auditable process rather than a reaction to a rating headline.
