The reliable way to research a semiconductor stock is to start with the company’s latest Form 10-K and subsequent filings, then compare its products, end markets, customers, pricing, margins, factory utilization, competitive position and disclosed risks across several reporting periods. That process shows how a business may behave when demand, selling prices or customer capital spending changes; it does not by itself produce a price target or a buy recommendation.

Semiconductor companies are not interchangeable. A memory producer can be driven by average selling-price swings, a chip manufacturer by factory utilization and fixed costs, and an equipment supplier by customers’ capital-expenditure plans. Use the workflow below to identify those differences before you make an investment decision.

What you are trying to learn before buying

Your first objective is not to predict the next quarter. It is to understand the company’s economic exposure: what it sells, who buys it, which conditions increase or reduce demand, and how revenue changes flow through to profit and cash generation.

A company filing is primary evidence about that company’s own operations and the risks management is required to disclose. It is not an independent forecast of the entire semiconductor industry. The SEC filings linked in this guide contain company-specific descriptions, so keep each conclusion tied to the issuer that made it.

  • Exposure: Map end markets, products, geographies and major customer categories.
  • Profit mechanics: Track selling prices, gross and operating margins, fixed costs and manufacturing utilization.
  • Cycle sensitivity: Determine whether results depend on consumer demand, industrial or automotive production, inventory corrections, or semiconductor manufacturers’ capital spending.
  • Execution and risk: Read competition, product transitions, supply constraints, customer concentration and other risks in the filing rather than relying on a stock-screening label.

Only after this operating analysis should you consider market price and valuation. The filings cited here do not establish a fair value, return estimate or current industry-wide sales forecast.

Step 1: Define the company and its comparison group

Write a one-sentence description of each candidate before opening a spreadsheet. For example: “This is a semiconductor manufacturer serving automotive and industrial customers,” “This is a memory and storage producer,” or “This is an equipment supplier whose sales depend on chipmakers’ capital budgets.” The sentence is a test: if you cannot write it from the filing’s business section, you do not yet understand the stock.

Compare like with like. A device manufacturer and a test-equipment company may both be called semiconductor stocks, but their demand drivers and cost structures differ. A useful comparison group can contain companies serving the same end market, selling a similar product category, or facing the same stage of the semiconductor cycle. Do not rank companies on a single industry label.

Record the basic identity

  • Legal issuer and ticker symbol.
  • Fiscal year-end and the date of the latest annual filing.
  • Main product families and whether the company designs, fabricates, packages, tests or supplies equipment.
  • Reported segments, principal regions and stated end markets.
  • Whether sales are direct, through distributors, or dependent on a small number of customers.

Keep the fiscal period beside every number. A company’s fiscal 2025 may not end in December, and a newer filing can change the period you should compare.

Step 2: Read the latest 10-K and subsequent filings in the right order

Use the SEC filing as your starting document, not a summary page. Read the business description, risk factors, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), and financial statements together. The business section explains what is sold; the risk and MD&A sections explain what can disrupt it; the statements show whether those conditions are visible in reported results.

  1. Open the latest Form 10-K. Confirm the fiscal year, reporting segments and principal products.
  2. Read the business section. Note end markets, customer types, manufacturing footprint, competitors and product transitions.
  3. Read risk factors. Mark risks that could affect revenue, prices, utilization, supply, demand or capital spending.
  4. Read MD&A. Look for management’s explanations of year-over-year changes in sales, gross margin, operating expenses, inventory and cash flow.
  5. Check the financial statements and notes. Reconcile segment revenue, inventory, debt, capital expenditures and unusual charges with the narrative.
  6. Read subsequent quarterly filings and current reports. Look for changes after the 10-K, including new demand conditions, guidance, factory actions, customer developments or material events.
  7. Update your worksheet. Replace old figures, but preserve prior periods so that a new quarter does not erase the cycle’s history.

Four filings illustrate why this order matters:

Issuer and filing Company-specific evidence to examine What it cannot prove
ON Semiconductor, fiscal 2025 Form 10-K Automotive and industrial end-market exposure, demand changes, manufacturing underutilization and competition. It does not forecast every semiconductor company or establish an industry sales total.
Diodes Incorporated, fiscal 2025 Form 10-K Customer and competitor pressure to reduce prices, fixed-cost exposure and the effect of lower sales and margins. Its pricing experience should not be generalized to every chip category.
Micron Technology, fiscal 2026 Form 10-K Average selling-price volatility in memory and storage and its relationship to supply-demand imbalances. Memory pricing behavior is not a universal measure for non-memory businesses.
Teradyne, fiscal 2025 Form 10-K Recurring industry cycles, periods of oversupply and dependence on semiconductor and electronics manufacturers’ capital expenditures. Equipment demand is not the same as chip demand, and the filing is not a capex forecast for all manufacturers.

Step 3: Map products, end markets and customers

Build a product-and-demand map before looking at the share price. For each segment, record the product, its customer, the end market and the event that makes the customer buy or delay a purchase.

Products and applications

List the actual product families rather than using “semiconductors” as a single category. Note whether a product is a component in a vehicle, factory, data system, phone, storage device or test line. Product mix affects replacement cycles, qualification requirements and the customer’s ability to switch suppliers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End-market concentration

Separate automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, computing, memory and other markets when the filing does. ON Semiconductor’s fiscal 2025 filing describes changes in automotive and industrial demand; that exposure can make its results respond differently from a company tied mainly to consumer electronics. Treat the stated exposure as a company characteristic, not as a forecast of those markets.

Customer and channel mix

Record whether sales are concentrated among a few customers, routed through distributors, or tied to manufacturers’ production plans. A customer’s inventory reduction can weaken orders even when the ultimate consumer market has not disappeared. Check the filing for concentration disclosures, contract terms and the timing of orders.

Use a table with one row per segment and these columns: product, end market, principal customer type, geographic exposure, demand trigger, and evidence from the filing. Leave a cell as “not stated” when the company does not disclose the detail; do not infer it from a product name.

Step 4: Measure demand and cyclicality over multiple periods

Semiconductor cyclicality is a company-specific analytical problem. Compare at least three to five annual periods when available, then add the latest quarters. Look for direction and persistence in revenue, unit volume where disclosed, inventory, orders, backlog, utilization and margins. A single strong quarter can reflect a temporary shortage, a customer restocking event or favorable pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions that reveal the cycle

  • Did revenue change because of units, selling prices, product mix, foreign exchange or acquisitions?
  • Are customers consuming products, building inventory or reducing inventory?
  • Does management describe a broad downturn, a specific end-market decline or a customer capital-spending pause?
  • Did factory utilization rise or fall with demand?
  • Did gross margin move with volume, prices, mix or unusual charges?

ON Semiconductor’s 2025 filing describes traditional semiconductor cyclicality, decreased demand in automotive and industrial end markets, lower sales volume and manufacturing underutilization. Use those disclosures to test how its own results behaved; do not turn them into an industry-wide statistic.

Teradyne’s 2025 filing discusses recurring cycles, periods of oversupply and dependence on capital expenditures by semiconductor and electronics manufacturers. For an equipment supplier, the relevant question is not only whether chips are selling, but whether manufacturers are adding or delaying production and test capacity.

Make the comparison period-aware

Create columns for each fiscal year and recent quarter. Add a note whenever the period includes an acquisition, divestiture, factory shutdown, product transition or accounting change. Compare the same metric on the same basis; mixing quarterly and annual figures can create a false trend.

Step 5: Test pricing, margins and operating leverage

Semiconductor profitability can change faster than revenue because factories, equipment, research and support costs do not all fall when sales decline. Read the income statement with the cost discussion in MD&A.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pricing and average selling prices

Search the filing for “average selling price,” “price pressure,” “pricing,” “supply and demand,” and “mix.” Diodes’ fiscal 2025 filing discusses pressure from customers and competitors to reduce product prices and the burden of fixed costs when sales and margins fall. That combination can compress profit even when the company continues shipping products.

Micron’s fiscal 2026 filing identifies average selling-price volatility in memory and storage and links it to supply-demand imbalances. For memory, track price direction separately from bit or unit shipments; rising output does not guarantee rising revenue if prices fall faster.

Margins and fixed costs

Calculate gross margin as gross profit divided by revenue and operating margin as operating income divided by revenue for each comparable period. Then annotate the result with management’s explanation: price, volume, mix, utilization, materials, labor, depreciation or restructuring. A margin change without a cause is an unresolved research question, not an investment signal.

Utilization and operating leverage

When demand falls, a factory may run below efficient capacity while many costs remain. ON Semiconductor discusses manufacturing underutilization, and Diodes discusses fixed-cost exposure during difficult conditions. Compare utilization comments with inventory, gross margin and cash flow to see whether the effect is temporary or recurring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a fab-heavy manufacturer’s margin directly with an equipment supplier’s margin without adjusting for the business model. The same revenue decline can produce different earnings effects because the cost bases differ.

Step 6: Examine competition and execution

Read the competition section and connect it to the product map. Identify named competitors where the filing provides them, but focus on the capability being contested: process technology, reliability, software, packaging, price, capacity, distribution or qualification history.

Product transitions

Record launches, end-of-life announcements, process migrations and qualification schedules. A transition can require research spending or temporary inefficiency before a product contributes revenue. Conversely, a delayed transition can leave a company exposed to price or performance pressure.

Customer relationships and switching

Look for qualification requirements, long design cycles, contracts and claims about service or reliability. These may make revenue more durable, but they do not remove cyclicality. Test management’s durability claim against changes in backlog, customer concentration and reported orders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational execution

Track capacity additions, factory utilization, supply commitments, inventory and capital expenditures. Ask whether management’s actions match the conditions described in the risk factors. A plan to add capacity during weak demand can increase fixed-cost exposure; a cutback can protect cash but constrain a later recovery.

Step 7: Analyze capital-spending linkage for equipment suppliers

If the company sells testing, manufacturing or other equipment, build a separate demand bridge. Start with the customer’s capital expenditure rather than semiconductor revenue alone.

  1. Identify which semiconductor or electronics manufacturers buy the equipment.
  2. Record whether purchases support new capacity, technology transitions, maintenance or test intensity.
  3. Check the filing for order timing, backlog, cancellations and customer concentration.
  4. Compare equipment revenue with customers’ stated capital-spending plans across several periods.
  5. Test whether a pause in customer spending would affect new orders, service revenue or both.

Teradyne’s 2025 filing explicitly discusses dependence on capital expenditures by semiconductor and electronics manufacturers and the industry’s recurring cycles. This makes customer investment behavior a first-order comparison factor, not an afterthought.

Step 8: Build a comparable worksheet

Use one row per company and keep source notes beside every conclusion. A practical worksheet contains:

How to interpret the four cycle examples

ON Semiconductor: demand and factory utilization

The fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes lower demand in automotive and industrial end markets, lower sales volume and manufacturing underutilization. When reviewing this company, compare end-market revenue, utilization comments, inventory and margin changes across periods. The key question is how much profit changes when those markets weaken, not whether the company belongs to a semiconductor category.

Diodes Incorporated: pricing pressure and fixed costs

Diodes’ fiscal 2025 filing discusses pressure from customers and competitors to reduce prices and the potential burden of fixed costs when sales and margins decline. Review price changes, gross margin, factory costs and operating income together. A revenue decline accompanied by lower prices can be more damaging than a volume decline with stable pricing.

Micron: memory price volatility

Micron’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K identifies average selling-price volatility for memory and storage products and links it to supply-demand imbalances. In a memory analysis, separate price, bit shipments, product mix and cost per bit. Do not apply memory pricing behavior to an unrelated analog, power or equipment supplier without evidence.

Teradyne: customer capital spending

Teradyne’s fiscal 2025 filing discusses recurring industry cycles, periods of oversupply and dependence on semiconductor manufacturers’ capital expenditures. Analyze equipment orders, backlog, service activity and customer investment plans. A chip market recovery may not immediately produce equipment orders if customers are still using existing capacity.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using one strong quarter as a forecast

Problem: A shortage, restocking event or temporary price increase is treated as a permanent trend.

Correction: Compare multiple annual periods and recent quarters, and identify whether changes came from volume, price, mix or utilization.

Comparing companies with different exposures

Problem: A memory producer, automotive chip supplier and equipment maker are ranked by revenue growth alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Compare product, end market, customer trigger and cost structure first.

Ignoring fixed costs

Problem: A small revenue decline is assumed to cause a similar percentage decline in profit.

Correction: Read utilization and fixed-cost disclosures, then track gross and operating margins through weak periods.

Treating a company filing as an industry forecast

Problem: One issuer’s risk language is presented as a statistical forecast for all semiconductors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Attribute each observation to the filing company and seek separate, authoritative industry data before making a market-wide claim.

Confusing equipment demand with chip demand

Problem: Semiconductor sales growth is assumed to guarantee immediate equipment orders.

Correction: Examine customers’ capital-expenditure plans, capacity utilization, backlog and order timing.

Skipping subsequent filings

Problem: An annual report is used even after conditions have changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Read the latest quarterly filing and material current reports, then preserve the prior 10-K for a period-over-period comparison.

A pre-purchase decision checklist

Before placing an order, you should be able to answer these questions in writing:

  • What exactly does the company sell, and which segment generates the economics?
  • Which end markets and customer types drive demand?
  • What would cause customers to delay purchases or reduce inventory?
  • Are revenue changes coming from units, prices, mix, acquisitions or currency?
  • How have average selling prices and margins behaved across several periods?
  • What happens to utilization and fixed costs when sales weaken?
  • For an equipment supplier, what customer capital-spending decision drives the next order?
  • Which competitors and product transitions could alter the company’s position?
  • Which disclosed risk would most directly invalidate your thesis?
  • What evidence would make you revise or abandon the thesis?

If you cannot answer a question from the latest filing and subsequent disclosures, mark the uncertainty explicitly instead of filling it with a broad industry assumption. This discipline keeps a stock purchase decision tied to evidence that can be checked and updated.

Scope and limits of this method

Filings provide detailed, issuer-specific facts, but they do not eliminate uncertainty. They may not disclose every customer, product price, unit volume or future capital-spending decision. They also describe management’s reported view and required risk disclosures, not an independent guarantee of future results.
