Do not accept a rare game’s asking price until you can match it to recent sales of the same release, region, edition and condition. Start by identifying the exact copy, separate loose, complete, sealed and graded examples, inspect several completed transactions, then calculate your all-in cost after shipping, taxes and import charges. A price guide is a useful benchmark, not an appraisal of the individual copy in front of you.

Start with the exact release, not the game’s name alone

Rare games often have multiple releases that look similar in a search result but trade at very different prices. Before opening a price history page, write down the identifiers on the copy and in the seller’s listing.

  • Title and platform: Record the exact title and hardware, including regional naming differences and ports.
  • Region: Confirm NTSC, PAL or Japan. PriceCharting says its coverage supports these regional releases, but a PAL sale is not automatically comparable with an NTSC or Japanese sale. See its coverage description.
  • Edition and variant: Note first print, later reissue, greatest-hits or budget label, special edition, bundle copy, promotional version and any catalog or product code.
  • Physical identifiers: Photograph or transcribe label text, cartridge or disc markings, rating symbols, publisher logos, barcode and packaging language.
  • Included material: List the original box, manual, inserts, maps, registration cards, case, artwork and accessories. Reproductions and replacement parts should be identified explicitly.

Save screenshots of the title screen, labels and packaging before comparing prices. A seller’s broad phrase such as “rare version” is not evidence of a distinct edition, and a high asking price does not prove rarity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also record the market in which the sale occurred. A transaction in the United States, United Kingdom or Japan may reflect different buyer pools, currencies, shipping distances and import rules. Keep those markets separate when possible; if you combine them, explain why and label the result as a less precise comparison.

Classify the copy’s condition and completeness

Condition is one of the largest drivers of price. PriceCharting’s FAQ separates loose, complete-in-box, new or sealed, graded, box-only and manual-only categories. Use the same category for every comparison rather than blending them into one average.

Category What to verify Why it changes comparability
Loose Cartridge or disc only; note label wear, scratches, corrosion and whether a case is included. A loose item lacks packaging and paper components that support complete-in-box premiums.
Complete in box Original game, box, manual and the inserts expected for that release; inspect tears, crushing, sun fading and writing. Missing or replacement parts can move a copy below other complete examples even when the game media is identical.
New or sealed Factory seal type, seal integrity, tears, resealing signs and whether the release was commonly shrink-wrapped. A sealed copy is not interchangeable with an opened complete copy, and an alleged seal needs authentication.
Graded Grading company, grade, case condition and whether the graded item is the same regional edition. Grading fees, market preference and the exact grade affect the transaction; compare like grades where possible.
Box only Original box artwork, tabs, inserts and structural condition; confirm that no game is included. Box-only sales answer a different question from a complete game sale.
Manual only Original manual language, edition markings and condition. Manual-only prices cannot establish the value of a complete copy.

Describe defects precisely: cracked cases, water damage, missing tabs, sticker residue, writing, sun fading, disc rot, label lifting and replacement shells can all invalidate a seemingly close comparison. Authenticity is a separate question from condition; a clean-looking reproduction can still be misidentified.

Do not let a seller’s adjective substitute for evidence. “Near mint,” “museum quality” and “CIB” can mean different things to different people. Check every component in photographs and ask which parts are original. A complete set for one edition may require inserts that another edition never shipped with, so use the release’s own expected contents rather than a generic checklist.

Find completed transactions for the same match

Use sold or completed listings rather than active asking prices. An active listing shows what a seller hopes to receive; a completed transaction shows what a buyer actually paid under stated conditions.

  1. Search the marketplace: Enter the exact title, platform, region and edition terms. On a marketplace such as eBay, use the completed or sold filter, then sort by sale date when that option is available.
  2. Exclude obvious mismatches: Remove lots, reproduction or reproduction-like listings, damaged or incomplete copies, accessories, box-only and manual-only items, and listings where the edition cannot be established.
  3. Open each candidate: Record the final sale price, currency, sale date, shipping charge when shown, photos, description, included parts and any accepted-best-offer indication.
  4. Check for lot pricing: A listing containing several games does not reveal the price of one copy unless the allocation is explicit and defensible. Keep lot sales out of a single-item estimate when you cannot separate the values.
  5. Cross-check a price-history service: PriceCharting says it collects sold listings from eBay and its own video-game marketplace and lists historical sales by item and condition. Review the underlying sales rather than copying one headline number from its methodology or item pages.

Read the listing’s fine print. An auction may show a winning bid but omit accepted-best-offer details; a “sale” may be cancelled; and a photo may depict a different item than the title describes. Preserve the URL, screenshots and notes while the page is available. If you cannot establish what changed hands, downgrade the observation or reject it.

Do not confuse eBay’s Price Guide with a video-game valuation tool. The cited page describes guidance for trading-card games, estimates based on completed marketplace sales, up to two years of history, updates every 24 hours and availability in the UK and US. Those claims concern that card-focused feature and should not be transferred to video games.

Build a comparable-sales worksheet

A small worksheet prevents a memorable outlier from becoming your entire estimate. Keep one row per transaction and preserve the original currency and date.

Field Entry to capture
Identity Title, platform, region, edition or variant and product code.
Condition Loose, complete in box, sealed, graded, box-only or manual-only, plus defects.
Transaction Sale date, final sale price, currency, shipping shown and whether the item was a lot.
Evidence Listing URL, photographs, included components and notes on authenticity or ambiguity.
Strength Exact match, close proxy or reject; explain the reason in one sentence.

Use at least several strong observations when they exist. An exact same-region, same-condition sale from last month is stronger than an older sale from another region, and both are stronger than an active listing. Keep the date window visible so a reader can tell whether the sample reflects the current market or a thin historical record.

Separate strong and weak comparables

  • Strong: Same title, platform, region, edition, completeness and comparable physical condition, with a clearly completed single-item sale.
  • Usable with a caveat: One small difference, such as a minor case defect or a nearby release variant, when you explain why it is a weaker proxy.
  • Reject: Unverified region, mixed lot, reproduction, missing major components, obvious misidentification, unsold listing or an exceptional celebrity-owned or heavily modified example.

For a practical confidence check, count exact matches separately from proxies. A conclusion supported by several exact transactions deserves more confidence than one supported by one exact sale and several cross-region examples, even if both sets contain the same number of rows. Explain the spread rather than hiding it: a narrow cluster suggests consistency, while widely separated prices call for closer inspection of condition, timing and listing quality.

Normalize dates, currencies and checkout costs

Never merge amounts without recording the currency and date. Keep original figures in the worksheet, then convert only for a clearly labeled summary using an exchange-rate date. A converted figure is still an approximation because the buyer’s card issuer, marketplace and bank may use different rates or fees.

Separate the seller’s item price from costs that depend on the buyer. A domestic buyer and an international buyer can face different shipping, tax and import charges for identical copies. If a completed listing does not show shipping or the buyer’s location, mark that part of the comparison unknown instead of assuming free delivery.

Understand what a price guide is calculating

PriceCharting describes coverage of more than 45,000 games, consoles and accessories, daily price updates, broad console support and NTSC, PAL and Japan regions on its About page. These are the service’s stated capabilities, not an independent audit. Its methodology page says the algorithm considers the most recent sale, median, average, age-weighted average, sale date and outliers, and that abnormally high or low listings are flagged for review.

Those statistics answer a different question from “What should I pay for this copy today?” A guide aggregates observations across time and listings; your purchase depends on the exact edition, completeness, defects, location, shipping and transaction timing. Treat the guide as a starting benchmark, then inspect the sales that produced it. The algorithm is proprietary, so no outside reader can reproduce every weighting decision from the headline estimate alone.

The most recent transaction is not automatically the best benchmark. It may be an unusually damaged copy or an exceptional example. Conversely, a median can conceal a shift in demand if older sales dominate the sample. Use the guide’s displayed context, then compare its implied category with your own worksheet. Never quote a guide number without naming the condition and region it represents.

Handle sparse or conflicting sales without false precision

Rare games may have only a few credible transactions in a long period. In that situation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Show the number of usable sales and their date range.
  2. Widen the window gradually instead of jumping straight to very old data.
  3. Label each older sale as historical context, not a current market price.
  4. Use a nearby region, edition or condition only as a clearly marked weaker proxy.
  5. Report a range or the observed spread when the sales disagree; do not manufacture a single exact value.

Do not infer rarity from a high asking price or from a thin record. A one-off result may reflect urgency, a bidding contest, a seller mistake, an unusually pristine copy or an undisclosed defect. Conversely, a low sale may be a damaged item, a rushed local transaction or a listing with incomplete contents.

When evidence is thin, the honest conclusion may be “insufficient comparable sales.” That is useful information: it tells you to negotiate cautiously, wait for another transaction or obtain specialist advice rather than paying a premium based on speculation. Do not fill the gap by averaging unrelated platforms, regions or conditions.

Compare the asking price with an all-in purchase cost

The amount charged at checkout can exceed the visible sale price. For each comparable and for the item you are considering, calculate:

All-in cost = item price + shipping + taxes or import charges + buyer-side platform fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record whether shipping was included or separately billed and keep currencies distinct until you convert them using a stated exchange-rate date. Taxes, customs treatment and platform fees depend on the buyer’s country and transaction, so there is no universal percentage adjustment. If a seller will not disclose shipping or import terms, mark your estimate as incomplete rather than silently treating the listed price as the final cost.

Use the same cost basis for every comparison. Comparing a domestic delivered total with an overseas item-only price can make an ordinary listing look cheap. Note whether tax was collected at checkout or may be due on delivery, and preserve the date because marketplace policies can change.

Use a decision framework before paying

After cleaning the worksheet, compare the asking price against the strongest recent matches in the same currency and market.

  • Within the observed range: Verify condition and authenticity, then decide whether the copy’s defects and all-in charges justify its position in that range.
  • Above the range: Ask what documented feature supports the premium—exceptional condition, a verified variant, complete inserts or a trusted grading result. Without such evidence, negotiate or continue searching.
  • Below the range: Treat the discount as a prompt for extra checks, not proof of a bargain. Confirm photos, serial or label details, completeness, seller history and return terms.
  • No reliable range: Pause the purchase, seek more observations and state openly that the market is too thin for a confident estimate.

Keep guide-versus-transaction as a separate comparison axis. A guide’s aggregate estimate and one completed sale are related evidence, but they are not interchangeable numbers.

Before making an offer, write down your maximum all-in budget and the evidence supporting it. This prevents a live auction or seller countdown from turning an uncertain estimate into an impulsive premium. If the seller supplies new photos or clarifies a variant, update the worksheet rather than relying on your first impression.

Authenticate independently of price history

Sold listings can help you spot an implausible price, but they cannot certify the item in your hands. Compare label fonts, screw types, board markings, disc artwork, cartridge plastics, serial placement, manual paper and box printing with trusted reference photographs. Ask for clear images in natural light and be cautious when a seller refuses to show identifying details. If authenticity matters, obtain an expert examination or a recognized grading service; do not treat a guide value, a high sale or a sealed appearance as proof.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Mixing regions: Rebuild the set with the same NTSC, PAL or Japan release, and label any cross-region proxy.
  • Mixing completeness: Remove loose, box-only and manual-only sales from a complete-in-box comparison.
  • Averaging lots: Exclude bundles unless each game’s allocation is documented.
  • Using active listings: Replace asking prices with completed transactions.
  • Ignoring dates: Show the sale date and widen the window only with an explicit caveat.
  • Overweighting an outlier: Investigate unusual photos, defects, bidding conditions and exceptional provenance before including it.
  • Ignoring checkout costs: Add shipping, taxes, import charges and buyer fees before comparing with your budget.
  • Calling a guide an appraisal: Present the service estimate as one input and cite the individual matched sales.
  • Treating a high price as proof of authenticity: Verify the physical item independently.
  • Assuming “complete” is universal: Check the expected contents for that exact release and identify replacements.

What broader market data can tell you

A University of Minnesota repository record identifies a 2025 paper titled “High score or game over? The financial returns of retro video games on the secondhand market.” Its result record says the study uses monthly eBay sales-price data dating back to 2008: repository record. Long-run datasets can put market cycles in context, but they do not replace checking the exact copy, region and condition of a purchase. Do not apply a study’s broad trend to one rare game without reading its methods and results.

Printed price-guide books can be useful for identification and historical context, but edition freshness and availability vary. A list of video-game books is cataloged on Wikipedia; use any book as a secondary reference and verify its figures against current completed sales.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Photograph and transcribe the game’s title, platform, region, edition and product markings.
  2. Classify it as loose, complete in box, sealed, graded, box-only or manual-only.
  3. Search completed single-item sales and remove mismatches, lots and unverifiable listings.
  4. Capture sale date, price, currency, shipping, contents, defects and listing evidence.
  5. Assemble several strong matches and mark every weaker proxy.
  6. Review a price guide’s methodology and underlying sales rather than relying on one headline figure.
  7. State the date window, market and number of usable observations.
  8. Add shipping, taxes, import charges and buyer-side fees to compute your all-in cost.
  9. Check authenticity separately and retain screenshots of the evidence supporting your decision.
  10. Set a maximum all-in offer and revisit it if new evidence changes the comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sold listings do I need before trusting an estimate?

There is no universal minimum. Use several strong, same-region and same-condition observations when available, show the number and date range, and lower your confidence when only one or two usable sales exist.

Should I use the newest sale or an average?

Neither is automatically correct. The newest sale may be an outlier, while an average may include older or unlike copies. Inspect the individual transactions and report the observed range, using guide statistics only as context.

Can I compare a PAL copy with an NTSC copy?

Only as a clearly labeled weaker proxy when exact-region sales are unavailable. Region, market and buyer demand can differ, so do not present the cross-region result as an exact match.

Do sold prices include shipping and taxes?

Not consistently. Record the item price and any shipping shown, then calculate your own all-in cost with applicable taxes, import charges and buyer-side platform fees. Mark unknown charges instead of assuming they are zero.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a graded or sealed game automatically worth more?

Not automatically. The exact grade, case condition, seal integrity, edition and buyer demand matter. Compare like grades or like sealed status, and authenticate the item independently.

Can a price guide prove that a seller’s copy is authentic?

No. A guide summarizes transactions and does not examine the physical copy. Verify labels, boards, plastics, printing and components, or seek expert examination when authenticity is important.

What should I do when there are no recent sales?

Widen the date window gradually, label older transactions as historical, and use nearby variants only as explicitly weaker proxies. If the evidence remains too thin, pause or negotiate cautiously rather than inventing a precise value.

Is eBay’s Price Guide suitable for rare video games?

The cited eBay UK page describes a trading-card-focused guide. Its claims about completed sales, up to two years of history, daily updates and UK/US availability should not be treated as video-game valuation coverage.

The Bottom Line

Match the exact release, region, edition and condition before looking at price. Use several completed single-item sales, document dates and costs, reject lots and unverifiable listings, and treat guide estimates as benchmarks rather than appraisals. When the record is thin, disclose the uncertainty; when authenticity matters, verify the object separately.
