A conference appearance is a lead, not proof that a startup is legitimate, commercially successful, or a sound investment. To check one properly, record exactly what the event claims, identify the company’s legal entity and jurisdiction, verify founders and business claims with independent sources, inspect the product beyond a scripted demo, and assess customers, economics, funding and any investment offer separately.
The right level of checking depends on your purpose. Procurement requires evidence that the product works and that the supplier can support you. A potential partnership requires clarity about ownership, capabilities and incentives. Reporting requires corroboration. Investment requires all of those checks plus securities, liquidity and fraud-risk analysis.
What a conference feature does—and does not—tell you
Being shown at a technology event can help you discover a company and see its pitch or product. It does not create an independent audit. Event organizers may screen applications for eligibility, choose companies for a competitive showcase, or publish information supplied by exhibitors. Those are different activities from verifying revenue, customers, security, intellectual-property ownership or investment merit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, Global Capital Network states in its own disclaimer that featured companies and people are not vetted for investment merit or endorsed, and that event presence should not be treated as due diligence. That statement applies to its events; it should not be generalized as the precise policy of every conference.

Read the role, not just the logo
Save the page that mentions the startup and label its role precisely:
- exhibitor or sponsor;
- pitch applicant, finalist or winner;
- selected live-demo company;
- speaker, panelist or company mentioned by a speaker; or
- participant in an investor-matching program.
A sponsor may have bought visibility, while a pitch finalist may have passed an eligibility screen. Neither status proves the same things as a live product demo or a verified customer reference. Record the event edition and date because criteria and programs change.
How published event processes differ
| Program | What its public material describes | What you can reasonably infer |
|---|---|---|
| CES Investor Partnership Program | Qualified investors can view company and funding information supplied by exhibitors seeking investment, including stage, funding sought, fundraising timeline, revenue and pitch materials. CES says more than 1,000 CES 2026 exhibitors shared funding information with the program. | The program can provide leads and documents for screening. The information is exhibitor-supplied, and the participation figure says nothing about any individual company’s quality. |
| SXSW Pitch | The referenced edition publishes application and finalist criteria, including company-registration and founder-ownership conditions, limits and product-category requirements. | Selection against stated eligibility rules is not independent validation of claims or an investment recommendation. Check the current edition’s rules. |
| Finovate Product Demos | Finovate describes a competitive selection process and live demonstrations of products. | A live demo lets you observe a workflow, but it does not establish paying customers, repeatable sales, security, economics or legal compliance. |
| Global Capital Network events | The organization’s disclaimer says featured companies and people are not vetted for investment merit or endorsed. | Treat the appearance as discovery only and perform your own checks. |
These descriptions come from the programs’ published pages: CES Investor Partnership Program, SXSW Pitch and Finovate Product Demos.

1. Preserve the original claims
Take screenshots or save PDFs of the event listing, exhibitor profile, speaker biography, pitch page and any investor-program entry. Record the page URL, event name, edition, publication date if shown, and the exact wording of claims about funding, customers, partnerships, patents, awards, revenue and launch status. Preserve the material before it changes or disappears.
Separate words such as “pilot,” “design partner,” “customer,” “partner,” “revenue” and “raised.” They are not interchangeable. A press mention can describe a conversation; a customer reference or contract supports a stronger claim.

2. Identify the legal entity and jurisdiction
Ask for the company’s complete legal name, trading names, jurisdiction of formation, operating subsidiaries and official website. Match those details against the conference listing, the company’s legal or contact page, invoices, contracts or privacy notice. A brand name may differ from the entity that signs a deal or issues securities.
Once you know the jurisdiction, use the appropriate public company registry and regulator for that place. There is no single worldwide database that covers every startup. Check registration status, directors or officers where public, filing dates, registered address and any available insolvency or enforcement records. An active registration confirms an entity exists; it does not prove solvency, product quality or honest claims.

3. Corroborate founders and company claims independently
Compare founder biographies with records not written by the startup whenever possible. Verify prior-company roles through those companies’ own announcements, regulatory filings, reputable conference biographies or institutional pages. Check award claims on the awarding organization’s site, patent claims in the relevant intellectual-property database, and partnership claims on the partner’s site or a joint announcement.
Use original sources for funding announcements and distinguish an announced round from money actually received. A profile supplied to an event is a lead. CES explains that its investor program makes exhibitor-provided company and funding information available to qualified investors; treat those fields as management claims until you corroborate them.
4. Inspect the product, not only the presentation
Request a live walkthrough of the core workflow. Ask the presenter to use a realistic input, show the output, explain failures and identify which functions are generally available. A recording or a carefully staged path can hide manual work, unavailable features or dependencies on a particular operator.

Document what you observed and what you could not test. Ask which parts are production software, a prototype, a pilot or a roadmap item; which third-party services are required; how data is stored and exported; and what happens when an integration, model or supplier is unavailable. If the product handles sensitive information, request security documentation, incident history and independent assurance appropriate to the intended use.
Keep four stages separate: a functioning demonstration, a pilot, a paying customer and repeatable commercial traction. Finovate’s live-demo format can help you see technology operate, but demo selection alone cannot prove sales or retention.
5. Verify customer and market evidence
Ask for customer references or permission to contact identifiable users, subject to confidentiality. Confirm what the customer bought, when it went live, whether it is paid, the scope of deployment and whether the customer would renew. For a confidential enterprise buyer, request a redacted contract, purchase order, usage report or reference call arranged through a verifiable corporate address.
Map the business case:
- Who has the problem and how is it solved today?
- Who is the economic buyer, and who uses the product?
- What is the pricing unit, contract term and implementation cost?
- How does the company reach customers, and what does acquisition cost?
- What evidence supports demand, retention and expansion?
- Which alternatives, including an internal process, compete for the budget?
Request the source and date behind market-size estimates. A large addressable market is an assumption to test, not evidence of demand. Compare the startup’s statements with customer evidence and credible alternatives.
6. Analyze funding, ownership and the offer separately
For a partnership or procurement decision, funding information helps you assess continuity but does not replace product and customer checks. Ask who invested, when, through what instrument and whether the announcement was a completed round, a target or a commitment. Confirm material claims with the investor or an official filing where available.

If someone is asking you to invest, identify the issuer, the security or other instrument, the person or firm soliciting you, the price, fees, rights, restrictions and offering documents. Research both the investment and the person offering it. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov Pre-IPO Investment Scams investor alert warns that a company may never go public, a resale market may never develop and you can lose the entire investment. That is general U.S. investor education, not a legal conclusion about a particular offer; local securities rules may differ.
Do not send money merely because a founder appeared at a recognized event. Verify the issuer’s identity, the intermediary’s authorization where applicable, payment instructions and the documents governing your rights. Independent legal or financial advice is appropriate for a consequential investment.
7. Screen for recruitment-led models and hard-to-value offers
Some pitches focus more on bringing in new participants than on selling a product to genuine users. Investor.gov’s Pyramid Schemes guidance identifies recruitment emphasis and products or services that are difficult to value as warning signs. Use those signs to investigate further; they are not, by themselves, a legal finding about a specific company.
Questions to ask a founder at the conference
Ask questions that produce verifiable details rather than broad assurances. Request permission to follow up by email so the answers and documents are attributable.
Company and people
- What is the full legal entity name, where is it registered, and which entity would sign my contract?
- Who owns the company, who controls it, and what are each founder’s current responsibilities?
- Which previous-company, award, patent or partnership claims can I verify through the other party?
Product and delivery
- Can you show the core workflow live with a realistic example?
- What is available to customers today, what is in pilot, and what is only planned?
- What third-party services, data rights and integrations does the product require?
- How do you handle outages, security incidents, data export and customer support?
Customers and economics
- How many customers are paying, what does “customer” mean in your figures, and may I speak with one?
- What was the most recent renewal or expansion, and what evidence supports retention?
- Who pays, how is pricing calculated, what does implementation cost, and how do you acquire buyers?
- Which alternatives do prospects consider, and why do they choose you?
Funding or investment
- What funding has closed, on what dates and instruments, and who can confirm it?
- What exactly am I being offered, what rights and restrictions apply, and who is soliciting the transaction?
- Which regulator, offering document or exemption governs the sale in my jurisdiction?
Compare two startups on the same evidence
When a conference introduces several companies, avoid ranking the most polished pitch. Build one evidence sheet for each startup and use identical definitions and dates.

| Dimension | Evidence to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Product maturity | Live workflow observed, production features, prototype or pilot boundaries, dependencies and support arrangements | Can it perform the required job reliably in the intended environment? |
| Customer proof | Named or referenceable users, paid status, deployment date, usage, renewal or expansion evidence | Is adoption independent of the founder’s claims? |
| Legal entity and ownership | Registered name, jurisdiction, contracting entity, ownership and founder roles | Can you identify who is responsible and who controls the business? |
| Business model | Buyer, pricing unit, contract terms, route to market, alternatives and implementation burden | Is there a plausible way to acquire and retain customers profitably? |
| Claim quality | Original sources, dates, independent confirmations and unresolved discrepancies | Are important statements current and corroborated? |
| Investment risk | Instrument, issuer, offering terms, fees, transfer restrictions, liquidity and downside | What can you lose, and can you exit? |
This is a practical comparison framework, not a validated scoring model. A startup with fewer customers may be the better fit for a narrowly defined procurement need; a larger funding round does not settle product or governance questions.
Red flags and how to respond
- Only event materials support a major claim: ask for the original announcement, filing, customer reference or partner confirmation.
- The legal name keeps changing: pause contracting or payment until the entity, jurisdiction and ownership are clear.
- The demo avoids realistic inputs or failure cases: request a controlled trial with agreed acceptance tests.
- “Customer” includes trials, wait-list names or unpaid pilots without explanation: ask for definitions and separate paid, active and retained accounts.
- Urgency, guaranteed returns or pressure to recruit: stop the transaction and review the Investor.gov warning signs before sharing money or personal information.
- Funding, patents or partnerships cannot be confirmed by the other party: treat the claim as unverified and reflect that uncertainty in your decision.
Do not try to resolve every uncertainty with more marketing material. A missing document, contradictory answer or refusal to provide a reasonable reference is itself relevant evidence about the risk and the time you should spend.
Match the depth of checking to your decision
For a news story or briefing
Attribute every material claim, link to the original source, label promotional language and give the company a chance to correct factual errors. Do not present event selection as endorsement or repeat an unverified market-size, customer or funding figure as fact.

Run a proof of concept with written acceptance criteria, security and privacy review, service-level terms, data ownership, exit assistance and a named contracting entity. Check references from organizations similar to yours and confirm who provides support after the event ends.
For a partnership
Clarify territory, exclusivity, intellectual-property rights, data responsibilities, commercial milestones and termination rights. Verify that the person negotiating can bind the relevant legal entity and that any promised integration or customer access is authorized.
For investment
Complete entity, founder, product, customer and funding checks before analyzing valuation. Then review the instrument, offering documents, intermediary, liquidity, dilution, fees and loss scenario under the rules that apply where you live. Early-stage and pre-IPO investments can lose all invested funds.
When you can make a decision
Proceed only when the evidence matches the decision’s risk. You should be able to name the contracting or issuing entity, explain what the product does today, identify the evidence for customer demand, distinguish verified facts from management claims, and describe the downside if the company fails. If those answers remain unclear, keep the startup on a watch list or request more evidence rather than treating the conference appearance as a substitute for diligence.
