To investigate a medieval monastery, start with the place and its local archive—not with a search for a single medieval map. Identify the site and its historic name variants, search local map and heritage records, then compare maps from different periods. Tithe maps paired with their written apportionments can connect plots to owners and land use; manorial, enclosure, archaeological and aerial evidence can help explain changes and test interpretations. This method is primarily for England and Wales, where the archival guidance cited here applies.
1. Identify the place and its historical names
Before searching catalogues, make a short place profile. Record the site’s current name, known historical spellings, parish, county, nearest settlement, type of religious house (such as an abbey or priory), and any known religious order or dedication. A record may be indexed under a parish, estate, landowner, or variant spelling rather than the name used on a modern map.
There is no single catalogue route for every monastery site. The right archive and the survival of relevant records depend on the location, so treat each search result as a lead to verify rather than assuming the site’s papers are held in one national collection.

Begin with the county or metropolitan archive responsible for the area and the local Historic Environment Record (HER). The National Archives (TNA) describes local or county archives as a strong starting point for local maps: its own map collection is large, but is neither geographically complete nor consistently arranged as a local-map service. Search the local archive catalogue using the place profile you assembled, including spelling variants, parish and nearby estate names. Check the HER for recorded archaeological sites, reports and references to earlier investigations. Then use national catalogues and map collections to broaden the search. TNA’s maps and plans overview points to online historical-map collections including the National Library of Scotland, A Vision of Britain through Time and British History Online; coverage and availability differ by collection.
3. Look across map periods, not only for a medieval map
A map made in the medieval period may survive, but it may not show the monastery or surrounding landscape at the detail needed for your question. TNA says its oldest maps date to the medieval period, while most of its holdings fall between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. Later maps can still help reconstruct property, roads, field patterns and landscape change.

For published Ordnance Survey maps, TNA directs readers to legal deposit libraries. Its collections overview also explains routes to historical maps and plans. When evaluating any map, note its date, scale, geographic coverage, original purpose, provenance, and whether it is an original or a copy. These details shape what it can support: a map suited to tracing a boundary may not establish the date or function of a building.
4. Use a tithe map and apportionment together
For a place-focused search, find the relevant tithe map, locate the monastery site or surrounding plot, and note its plot number. Then find the corresponding entry in the apportionment—the written schedule keyed to the map. The map shows which land is being described; the schedule can identify landowners and occupiers, land use and rentcharge. TNA identifies the main series as IR 30 for tithe maps and IR 29 for apportionments. Its guide to tithe records explains how to search them.

Read the map as an administrative record
Tithe maps were produced to administer tithe commutation, not as archaeological plans. Their scale and accuracy vary. TNA notes that first-class maps were certified as sufficiently accurate for legal evidence of boundaries and plots; second-class maps range from near-misses to rough topographical sketches. Check the map’s status and scale rather than treating every line as equally precise.
Do not conclude that a feature did not exist merely because it is absent from a tithe map. Nor should you assume colours or symbols carry the same meaning across maps: consult the map and its associated documentation for the particular source.

5. Build a map regression to trace change
A map regression is a comparison of maps in date order, beginning with the earliest available. Historic England’s archaeological standards guidance calls for a map regression using the earliest available maps. TNA also notes that historical local maps can help identify place names and landscape features that have changed.

Include relevant estate, tithe, enclosure, Ordnance Survey and other local maps, rather than assuming one series answers every question.
- Order them by date. Record the date of each map and distinguish the date it depicts from any later copying or publication date where that information is available.
- Compare consistent areas. Keep the monastery and its surroundings in view at comparable extents. Note changes in boundaries, roads, watercourses, buildings, field names and land use.
- Log source details. For every item, record creator or series, date, repository, catalogue reference, scale if stated, geographic coverage, original purpose, and any known accuracy or copying caveat.
- Separate depiction from inference. A map may show a boundary or building; a conclusion that a feature changed between two dates is an interpretation based on comparison. Label it accordingly.
6. Add records that explain ownership and land change
Maps show spatial relationships, but other records may help explain why boundaries, ownership or land use changed. Search estate, manorial, enclosure and post-dissolution records where relevant. Enclosure awards and maps can record ownership and land distribution, as well as roads, rights of way and boundaries. TNA’s enclosure records guide notes that these materials are dispersed across repositories. Use catalogues to identify a likely holding and confirm its location and survival with the relevant repository; do not presume that all records for a site are kept centrally.
7. Corroborate with archaeological and aerial evidence
Search the local HER and relevant archaeological archives and reports alongside documentary sources. Aerial photographs and lidar can reveal or help map archaeological features that are not clear on historical maps. Historic England’s aerial investigation guidance identifies the Historic England Archive, CUCAP, relevant local collections—including material held by local authorities in HERs—and online aerial imagery among sources to consult.
Use aerial evidence to test a map-based interpretation, not as a replacement for dated documentary evidence. An apparent earthwork or cropmark is a clue to investigate; by itself it does not establish a monastery’s date, ownership or function.

8. Keep the evidence and your interpretation distinct
For each map or record, preserve the catalogue reference and repository information with your notes. Write down what the source explicitly states or depicts, then separately record what you infer by comparing it with other evidence. This makes it possible to revisit a conclusion if a map’s scale, purpose, date or provenance changes how much weight it can bear.
