The reliable way to research a jewellery share is to reconstruct the issuer’s economics from its latest annual filing, then test that picture against earlier annual and interim reports. Confirm exactly what the company sells, how it sources and values inventory, whether sales growth becomes cash, how exposed it is to precious-metal and diamond prices, and how seasonal discretionary demand affects results. Only after that should you compare valuation with genuinely similar companies and check the current share price and financial data.
This process produces an evidence-based investment brief, not a buy or sell call. Retail, e-commerce, wholesale, manufacturing, branded design and precious-metal exchange businesses can have very different margins, working-capital needs and risks, so a reported percentage from one issuer is not a jewellery-sector benchmark.
1. Identify the issuer before reading the numbers
Begin with the company’s official annual report or regulatory filing, not a third-party profile. Record the legal issuer, ticker, exchange, reporting currency, fiscal year-end, listing jurisdiction and share class. Check whether the filing is a consolidated group report or covers only a parent company. These details prevent errors such as comparing a calendar-year company with a retailer whose fiscal year ends after the holiday season.
Download the latest annual filing, the preceding two annual reports and the most recent interim report. Keep the documents together: a change explained in management’s discussion may only make sense when read beside the accounting note, risk factor and segment table that support it.

Build an issuer fact sheet
- Legal name and primary listing venue.
- Fiscal year-end and reporting currency.
- Ordinary shares, multiple classes and any significant voting differences.
- Main countries, brands, stores, websites and distribution partners.
- Reported operating segments and the company’s definitions of each channel.
- Debt facilities, cash balances and stated liquidity headroom.
Do not assume that labels such as “digital,” “retail,” “brand” or “wholesale” mean the same thing across companies. Read the issuer’s definitions before placing figures in a comparison table.
2. Establish what kind of jewellery business you are studying
Business model determines where profits are made and which risks matter. A store-led retailer may carry large finished-goods inventories and face rent and labour costs. An online seller may have different acquisition costs, return rates and fulfilment economics. A manufacturer or vertically integrated brand can control design and production but may carry more operational and commodity exposure. A wholesaler depends on retailer orders and customer credit, while a precious-metal exchange may earn fees on transactions rather than a conventional product margin.
Map products, channels and ownership
From the business description and segment note, classify the company across these dimensions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Channel: stores, e-commerce, wholesale, marketplaces, concessions, repairs or exchanges.
- Product: fine jewellery, bridal, watches, fashion items, loose stones, services and accessories.
- Brand control: third-party merchandise, licensed brands, internally designed products or fully owned brands.
- Customer: mass-market, premium, luxury, bridal, repeat members or business customers.
- Geography: domestic sales, international stores, cross-border online sales and manufacturing locations.
Birks Group’s fiscal 2026 Form 20-F illustrates why this mapping matters. Retail represented about 94% of net sales, while e-commerce and gold exchange together represented about 6%. The report also said internally designed and sourced products were approximately 46% of jewellery products acquired for sale in that fiscal year. Those are Birks-specific FY2026 figures, not averages for listed jewellery companies.
Describe the economic engine in one paragraph
Write a plain-language explanation of how one dollar of sales becomes operating cash. Include the main selling channel, typical product categories, who owns the inventory, when suppliers are paid, what services are attached to a sale and which costs are fixed. If you cannot explain the model without relying on promotional language, return to the segment and accounting notes.
3. Create a multi-period financial baseline
Extract at least three annual periods and the latest interim period into a spreadsheet. Use the issuer’s reported definitions first; calculate additional ratios only when the underlying figures are comparable.

| Measure | What to record | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Total sales, by segment and channel where disclosed | Is growth organic, acquisition-driven, price-led or caused by currency? |
| Comparable sales | Same-store, constant-currency or other like-for-like measure | What stores, periods and channels are included or excluded? |
| Gross margin | Reported percentage and dollar gross profit | Did mix, promotions, input costs, currency or services change? |
| Operating profit | Operating income, adjusted measures and reconciliation | Are adjustments recurring, cash costs or merely reclassified expenses? |
| Cash conversion | Operating cash flow, capital expenditure and free cash flow | Does profit become cash after inventory investment and store spending? |
| Working capital | Inventory, receivables, payables and provisions | Is inventory rising faster than sales, and are supplier terms changing? |
| Funding | Debt, leases, cash, interest expense and maturities | Could a seasonal cash dip breach a covenant or require new capital? |
| Share count | Basic and diluted shares, buybacks, options and issuance | Is per-share growth diluted by compensation or fundraising? |
Read margins with their drivers
Signet Jewelers’ FY2026 Form 10-K says gross margin is affected by pricing, promotional activity, merchandise costs, sales mix, foreign exchange and services such as repairs and extended service plans. It also notes that average-cost inventory accounting can delay the effect of cost movements in reported margins. Consequently, a margin increase does not automatically prove that the underlying business improved: it may reflect a temporary mix shift, delayed cost recognition or fewer promotions.

For every major change, annotate the company’s explanation and then check the numbers. If management says margin improved through price increases, look for evidence in units, transaction value, comparable sales and inventory. If the explanation is currency, separate reported growth from constant-currency growth where the filing provides both.
Test profit-to-cash conversion
Calculate operating cash flow divided by net income over several years, but investigate rather than worship the ratio. A weak year may reflect deliberate inventory investment before a launch; repeated weak conversion can indicate markdowns, receivable problems or capitalised costs. Calculate inventory turnover as cost of sales divided by average inventory when the accounting basis is consistent. Record the company’s own turnover or days-inventory measure if it provides one, because its definition may differ from yours.
4. Investigate inventory, markdowns and supplier dependence
Inventory is often the central balance-sheet risk in jewellery retail. Read the inventory accounting policy, valuation method, ageing discussion, markdown provisions, shrinkage assumptions, purchase commitments and supplier-payment terms. Determine whether merchandise is physically held by the company, shipped by a supplier after a customer order, or represented through a virtual-inventory arrangement.
Questions for the inventory note
- Which categories are valued at cost, lower of cost and net realisable value, or another method?
- Does the company use average cost, first-in-first-out or category-specific methods?
- How are stones, metals, watches, work in progress and repair parts treated?
- What caused inventory to change: unit growth, price inflation, acquisitions, a new store program or slower sell-through?
- Are markdowns, obsolescence, theft and damage provisions rising or being released?
- Are purchase commitments binding even if demand weakens?
Signet describes virtual inventory and identifies merchandise and supplier management as material risks. Birks says most inventory is kept on store display and reported that merchandise from its largest luxury timepiece supplier represented approximately 22% of total net sales in FY2026. The two disclosures point to different questions: virtual inventory requires attention to fulfilment and supplier execution, while a concentrated luxury supplier creates dependence on one relationship and product range.

Separate supplier concentration from sourcing geography
A company may have many suppliers in one country, or a few suppliers spread across several countries. Read concentration tables, major-supplier references, purchase commitments and geographic risk disclosures together. Check whether the company can substitute a supplier, owns tooling or designs, and has rights to continue selling a brand if a contract ends. Do not infer resilience merely from a long supplier list.

5. Stress-test precious-metal, stone and currency exposure
Gold, silver, diamonds, coloured gemstones, labour and foreign exchange can affect cost of goods, inventory values, customer demand and cash requirements at the same time. Search the annual report for commodity, raw-material, hedging, foreign-exchange and pricing language. Note whether the issuer buys forward, hedges, adjusts prices, redesigns products, changes stone size or relies on supplier contracts.
Use a practical sensitivity worksheet
- List the materials that materially affect the product categories the company sells.
- Estimate which costs are variable and which are fixed using the cost-of-sales and risk disclosures.
- Record the company’s stated ability to raise prices, change sourcing or substitute materials.
- Model a higher-cost case in which prices rise but unit demand falls, rather than assuming complete pass-through.
- Check the effect on gross margin, inventory valuation, cash tied up in stock and debt capacity.
Signet states that higher commodity costs can pressure margins, earnings, inventory valuations and cash availability if price changes or sourcing actions do not offset them. Its FY2026 report also said products containing lab-grown diamonds represented approximately 27% of merchandise sales and described declining lab-grown-diamond costs and retail prices as a potential business risk. Treat that as Signet’s exposure, not evidence that every jeweller has the same mix or risk.
Keep natural and lab-grown diamonds separate
If the issuer reports the categories separately, track sales, units, average selling price and margin for each. Falling input prices may help affordability while reducing the value of existing stock or changing consumer expectations. A company with no disclosed split should not be assigned a lab-grown exposure based on industry headlines alone.

Jewellery is often discretionary, and the same annual revenue can produce very different cash patterns depending on when it is earned. Build a quarterly history using the issuer’s fiscal quarters, not calendar quarters. Compare each holiday quarter with the same quarter in prior years before drawing conclusions from sequential growth.
What to extract from quarterly reports
- Revenue, comparable sales, units and average transaction value.
- Promotional intensity, markdowns and clearance activity.
- Store traffic, conversion, online traffic and return rates where disclosed.
- Customer financing balances, credit losses and third-party financing exposure.
- Geographic, channel and product mix.
- Inventory at quarter-end and management’s comments on holiday readiness.
Birks reported that its third fiscal quarter contributed 34% of FY2026 net sales, versus 34% in FY2025 and 33% in FY2024. This is a company-specific pattern, but it demonstrates why a retailer’s quarter cannot be judged without its own fiscal calendar. Signet lists seasonality and promotional competition among its risks and states in its FY2026 Form 10-K: “Because of the highly seasonal nature of Signet’s sales, any one of these factors that occurs during the Holiday Season would have an increased adverse impact.” That sentence describes Signet’s risk assessment, not a universal forecast.
Assess competitive pressure without counting logos
Identify the actual basis of competition: price, design, brand trust, store network, service, bridal expertise, delivery speed, financing, resale value or exclusive products. Then check whether the company measures those advantages through repeat rates, conversion, market share, gross margin or customer-acquisition cost. A long list of competitors is less informative than evidence that the issuer can retain customers without permanently increasing discounts.

7. Read responsible-sourcing and traceability disclosures critically
Responsible-sourcing language can describe a serious control system, a limited legal report or a broad aspiration. Read the scope and methods before treating it as evidence about upstream risk.
Use a six-part sourcing checklist
- Materials: Which metals, stones and minerals are covered?
- Suppliers: Are direct suppliers covered only, or are refiners, mines and subcontractors included?
- Screening: What questionnaires, certifications, country-risk checks or contract terms are used?
- Audits: Who performs them, how often, against which standard and with what remediation?
- Traceability: Can the company trace a material to a refiner, mine or batch, and what percentage is traceable?
- Limitations: Which products, minerals, years or suppliers remain outside the process?
Signet’s conflict-minerals report for calendar year 2024 describes supplier reporting under its Responsible Sourcing Protocol, alignment with OECD due-diligence guidance and third-party audit procedures. Its conclusions apply to the covered products and stated reporting period. They are evidence of the process Signet reported, not independent proof that every upstream risk has been eliminated.
Distinguish mandatory conflict-minerals reporting from voluntary commitments covering broader environmental, labour or human-rights issues. Record the reporting year because a current filing can contain historical supply-chain findings.
8. Compare jewellery companies on consistent axes
Peer comparison is useful only when the companies are economically comparable and the periods and definitions match. Create one row per issuer and one column per consistently defined measure.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Business model | Retail, online, wholesale, manufacturing, exchange and service mix | Comparing a store retailer with a fee-based exchange as if both earn product margins |
| Products and brands | Owned brands, third-party goods, watches, bridal, lab-grown and natural stones | Calling different product mixes a margin-management skill |
| Channels and geography | Sales by channel, region and comparable-store scope | Mixing reported and constant-currency growth |
| Profitability | Gross and operating margins, with reconciliations | Ignoring promotions, services or accounting classifications |
| Inventory | Turnover, ageing, markdowns, commitments and valuation method | Comparing ratios calculated from incompatible cost bases |
| Suppliers and sourcing | Concentration, geography, audits and traceability scope | Treating a supplier code as proof of mine-level traceability |
| Balance sheet | Debt, leases, liquidity, covenants and share dilution | Using enterprise-value multiples without including lease or debt differences |
| Demand risk | Seasonality, financing, promotions and discretionary exposure | Annualising a strong holiday quarter |
Brilliant Earth Group’s annual filing can serve as another issuer-specific example for retail, inventory and sourcing risks, but its disclosures should remain attributed to that company. Never turn any one issuer’s figures into an industry statistic.
9. Build a valuation framework only after the operating work
Valuation is the final layer because a cheap multiple can reflect weak economics, and a high multiple can reflect durable cash generation. Select a peer set based on business model, geography, product mix, growth and leverage. State the fiscal period and whether each measure is reported, adjusted or estimated.

Useful measures
- Price-to-earnings: useful when earnings are positive and accounting policies are reasonably comparable.
- Enterprise value to operating profit or EBITDA: helps compare different debt levels, but reconcile leases and company-specific adjustments.
- Price-to-free-cash-flow: tests cash generation, while requiring careful treatment of seasonal inventory investment.
- Enterprise value to sales: a fallback for low-margin or loss-making companies, not a substitute for assessing eventual margins.
Explain why a multiple is appropriate and list the adjustments. Compare growth, margin durability, inventory risk, supplier concentration, commodity sensitivity and balance-sheet strength alongside the number. A general method cannot establish whether an unnamed jewellery share is attractive at its current price; that requires the named issuer’s latest market price and financial data immediately before publication.
10. Red flags that deserve a second reading
- Inventory grows materially faster than sales without a clear launch or expansion explanation.
- Reported profit rises while operating cash flow repeatedly deteriorates.
- Gross margin depends on unexplained “adjustments,” unusually low promotions or a changing definition.
- A major supplier, brand licensor or customer represents a large share of sales or product availability.
- Commodity pass-through is asserted, but unit volumes and conversion weaken after price increases.
- Quarterly results rely on one holiday period, while the company provides little quarterly history.
- Responsible-sourcing language omits supplier coverage, audit outcomes or known limitations.
- Debt, leases or seasonal borrowing are discussed separately from liquidity needs.
- Share-based compensation, convertibles or repeated equity issuance obscure per-share progress.
A red flag is a prompt to investigate, not automatic proof of wrongdoing. Reconcile the concern with the footnotes, subsequent interim report and management explanation.
11. Turn the work into a repeatable investment memo
After reading the filings, write a short memo that another investor could audit. Keep facts, calculations and judgements in separate sections.
Recommended Free Tools
- Business: describe the model, channels, products, brands and geographic footprint.
- Economics: show three-year revenue, comparable sales, margins, cash flow, inventory and debt trends.
- Risks: rank demand, seasonality, commodities, suppliers, sourcing, currency and financing risks by likely impact.
- Evidence: attach the filing page or note for every important figure and record the reporting period.
- Scenarios: model a base case, a weaker-demand case and a cost-inflation case, changing units, prices, margins and working capital together.
- Valuation: list the peer set, multiple definitions, adjustments and the market date used.
- Disconfirming evidence: state what result would invalidate your thesis, such as persistent inventory build, lost supplier access or falling cash conversion.
- Decision: specify whether the evidence supports further work, a watchlist, or no investment at the current information set.
Update the memo after each annual and interim filing rather than relying on a static screen. Preserve the old version so you can see whether the thesis changed because the business changed or because your assumptions drifted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many reporting periods should I compare?
Use at least three annual periods plus the latest interim report, while comparing each quarter with the same fiscal quarter in prior years to account for holiday seasonality.
Can a responsible-sourcing report prove that a jewellery company has no supply-chain risk?
No. It can document the company’s stated scope, supplier checks and audits for a particular period, but it cannot establish that every upstream risk is absent.
Should I compare a jewellery retailer with a manufacturer using the same margin target?
Only with substantial qualification. Their channels, inventory ownership, product mix, supplier terms and accounting definitions may differ enough to make a direct margin comparison misleading.
