Start by deciding what you actually need: selected data, money or billing information, permanent account closure, or use of the person’s device. Google and Apple handle those outcomes through different procedures, and neither provider simply gives a relative the deceased person’s password. For Google, submit a content or data request before requesting closure. For Apple, use the deceased person’s Legacy Contact access key if you have one; otherwise follow the legal-documentation process for the country or region involved.
Choose the outcome before you contact either provider
“Access” can mean several different things. A request to copy photographs is not the same as a request to close an account, recover funds, or prepare an iPhone for a new owner. Selecting the wrong route can make a later request impossible or erase information you still need.

If preserving files matters, make that the first objective. Do not choose closure or deletion merely because it appears faster. Google specifically says that once an account-closure request is selected, it cannot later process a request to turn over the account contents.

Information useful for any request
- The deceased person’s full legal name and likely account email address or Apple Account identifier.
- Your own legal name, contact details and relationship to the person.
- A death certificate or other official proof of death, kept as a clear scan or photograph.
- Evidence of your authority where applicable, such as estate-representative, heir or agent documentation required by the local process.
- A list of the specific data or service you need, so you can select the narrowest appropriate request.
Keep original documents secure and submit copies only through the provider’s official form or support channel. Do not email passwords, recovery codes or a device passcode to a third party claiming to “unlock” the account.

What Google does and does not publish
Google’s static help guidance does not provide a universal document checklist or promise that one particular document guarantees access. The troubleshooter asks questions about your circumstances and requested outcome; answer those prompts accurately and provide the documentation it requests. Google says it may work with immediate family members and representatives to close an account where appropriate and may provide content in some circumstances after a careful review.
Apple’s regional requirements
Apple verifies legal documentation before assisting. The exact documents depend on the Apple entity and the country or region involved. Apple’s UK guidance, published August 24, 2026, generally refers to a death certificate and may require a court order or other documents. It notes that Japan may instead require a family certificate indicating the account holder’s death. Treat those examples as regional rules, not a worldwide checklist.
How to request Google account data, funds or closure
1. Open the official Google request flow
- Go to Google’s deceased-user request troubleshooter.
- Read the available outcomes and select the one that matches your immediate goal: close the account, request funds, or obtain account data.
- Complete the form with your relationship, the account identifier and the requested information. Follow every document and identity prompt shown for your case.
The form is the current operational route. Google’s help page does not state a guaranteed turnaround time, so do not rely on a promised response date when planning an estate deadline.
2. Put a data request before closure
If you need messages, photographs, documents or other content, submit the content/data request first. Google warns that it cannot process a later request to turn over contents after you select account closure. If you have already submitted a contents request, wait for that request to finish before filing another request. A closure request is therefore an irreversible sequencing decision, not a harmless administrative step.
3. Understand what Google can provide
Google reviews requests carefully and may provide account content in appropriate circumstances, but it does not guarantee complete access. Its official guidance is explicit: “We cannot provide passwords or other login details.” Any approved handover is therefore a controlled disclosure of eligible content, not a transfer of the deceased person’s credentials.
Separate the funds option from a content request. If the estate needs money or billing information, use the funds route presented by the troubleshooter and supply the evidence requested there. Do not assume that approval to receive files also authorizes financial action.

4. If you selected the wrong Google option
- If closure has not been submitted, stop and return to the troubleshooter to choose the data route first.
- If a data request is pending, do not submit a closure request while it is being reviewed.
- If closure was already selected, Google’s published warning means a later contents request may not be processable. Keep the confirmation and contact Google only through the official flow for any status question.
Google’s Inactive Account Manager is advance planning, not a recovery method
When an account holder is alive and planning ahead, Google’s Inactive Account Manager can notify trusted people or share selected available data after a chosen period of inactivity. The account holder can designate up to 10 people and choose all or only selected data types; some information cannot be shared. Google uses several activity signals, including sign-ins, My Activity, Gmail use and Android check-ins, and the account holder sets the inactivity period.

This feature does not give a relative an immediate login or override the deceased-user request process. Google also says it reserves the right to delete an account and its data after at least two years of inactivity across Google. Anyone making an estate plan should therefore document the account identifier and the intended data recipient rather than relying on eventual recovery.
How Apple Legacy Contact access works
1. Check whether you were designated
The simplest Apple route exists when the deceased person named you as a Legacy Contact and you have the unique access key. The key may be stored in your Apple Account settings, printed, or included with estate-planning papers. A name in a will is not by itself the same thing as an Apple Legacy Contact designation.
2. Gather the two items Apple requires for the Legacy Contact request
- The unique Legacy Contact access key.
- The deceased person’s death certificate.
Apple’s Australian guidance says the designated contact needs both items and can begin on a device or through the Digital Legacy request site. That article also records Legacy Contact support beginning with iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2 and macOS 12.1; use the current Apple page for your own region because device and process details can change.
3. Submit through Apple Digital Legacy
- Open Apple’s current deceased-family-member account instructions and select the region that applies to the account and your legal situation.
- Choose the Legacy Contact request path and enter the information exactly as it appears on the death certificate and account records.
- Upload or provide the access key and death documentation when prompted.
- Retain the request reference and any instructions about additional verification or a device passcode.
A successful request provides access to certain data, not necessarily everything stored in the account. Keep the access key private; anyone who obtains it and the required death documentation may be able to initiate a request.

Confirm the regional process first
Without a Legacy Contact key, Apple describes a court-order route in the United States, Israel and other locales. In some jurisdictions, including France, Germany, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, alternative documents and a different process may be accepted. Do not automatically obtain a court order before checking the current Apple instructions for the country or region and Apple entity involved.

Apple’s UK page directs people to its regional instructions and Apple Support. Requirements can change, and a document accepted in one country may not satisfy another country’s process.
What a qualifying court order may need to say
Where the court-order route applies, Apple says the order should identify:
- The deceased person and the relevant Apple Account.
- The requesting next of kin.
- That the deceased used the associated accounts.
- Your status as legal personal representative, agent or heir and your lawful consent.
- That Apple is ordered to assist with access.
Apple says only one person can request access under this described process. Families with several heirs should agree who will be the named requester and how any approved data will be handled before filing.

Apple says some data may be end-to-end encrypted and Apple is not able to decrypt it. A request can also prompt for the deceased person’s device passcode or other information. Approval is therefore not a promise that every photograph, message, health record or keychain item will be readable.
Apple account deletion is different from obtaining data
For permanent deletion, Apple says you need your own Apple Account, the account to be deleted and the legal documentation required for the applicable country or region. The request starts on Apple Digital Legacy. Deletion should be chosen only after the estate has decided that preserving account content is no longer necessary.
If you are unsure whether a known email address or phone number belongs to an Apple Account, Apple’s Australian guidance points to iforgot.apple.com as a way to check. Treat a match as an identifier check, not proof that you are authorized to access the account.

Reusing an Apple device after the account holder’s death
Activation Lock and account requests
Apple says Activation Lock is automatically removed after a Legacy Contact or account-deletion request is completed. That does not make the device immediately ready for another person. The iPhone, iPod touch or iPad must still be erased and restored before it can be used with another Apple Account.

Erasure is destructive
Erasing the device removes on-device data. If photographs, notes or other files have not been preserved through an approved account-data process or another lawful copy, erasure can make them unavailable on that device. A device passcode lock cannot be removed without erasing the device. Do not use bypass tools or services that promise to defeat the passcode or Activation Lock.
- Finish any Legacy Contact or deletion request needed to remove Activation Lock.
- Confirm that the estate has preserved the data it is entitled to keep.
- Erase and restore the device using Apple’s normal reset process.
- Set it up with the new owner’s Apple Account only after the erase is complete.

Common problems and the safest response
You know the person’s email but not which provider owns it
Identify whether the address is used for a Google Account, Apple Account or both. An email address can be a sign-in identifier without proving that the provider stores the same data under it. Use only the provider’s official identifier and request pages; do not attempt repeated password guesses.
You have a death certificate but no Apple access key
Use Apple’s regional legal-documentation instructions. The certificate may be necessary but not sufficient; the jurisdiction may require a court order or alternative proof of authority.
The family wants the device immediately
Separate the hardware decision from the data decision. Preserve requested account data first, then complete the Apple process that removes Activation Lock and erase the device. A passcode cannot be removed while retaining the device’s contents.
Several relatives want access
Providers may deal with one designated requester or legal representative. Apple’s described court-order process permits only one requester. Agree internally who will file, what data is needed and how approved copies will be stored before submitting documents.

The account contains highly sensitive information
Limit the request to the information the estate actually needs. Store downloaded files in encrypted storage, restrict access to the authorized representative and follow any applicable probate, privacy and employment-law obligations. Provider approval does not replace local legal authority.
You need an answer by a specific date
Neither provider’s guidance supplies a universal guaranteed response time. Submit complete information promptly, retain confirmation numbers and avoid promising beneficiaries a date that the provider has not stated.
A practical submission checklist
- Write down the exact goal: data, funds, closure, deletion or device reuse.
- Identify the likely account email address, phone number or Apple Account identifier.
- Gather your identification, relationship and authority documents.
- Obtain a clear death certificate copy and, for Apple Legacy Contact, locate the unique access key.
- For Google, file the data request before any closure request.
- For Apple, verify the country or region rules before pursuing a court order.
- Read the provider’s warnings about encryption, incomplete access and required passcodes.
- Save confirmation messages and keep submitted documents secure.
- Only after data decisions are complete, submit deletion or closure.
- Before reusing an Apple device, confirm Activation Lock removal and then erase and restore it.
Plan ahead to avoid an emergency request
For Google, the account holder can configure Inactive Account Manager, choose an inactivity period, name up to 10 trusted contacts and select which available data types each person may receive. For Apple, the account holder can designate a Legacy Contact and provide the access key to the intended person or include it in estate-planning records. In both cases, the account holder should record where the key or instructions are stored and review them when devices, phone numbers or trusted people change.
These planning tools reduce uncertainty but do not turn a family member into an ordinary account user. The provider still applies its verification, privacy and encryption rules, and some categories of data remain unavailable.
