To request an Xbox digital-game refund, sign in with the Microsoft account that paid for the purchase, open Order history or the official Xbox digital-games refund page, select the game, choose Request a refund, explain why, review the details, and select Submit. Microsoft reviews the request under the terms that apply to your market and purchase; submitting the form does not guarantee approval.
What to know before you start
Use the Microsoft account that made the purchase. The account you normally use on an Xbox console may not be the purchasing account, particularly if several people use the same console or family group. If you sign in to a different account, the game may not appear in Order history and the refund form may be unavailable.
Have the purchase in mind before opening the form: the exact game or add-on, the approximate purchase date, and the reason you want the money returned. The form identifies the transaction from your order history, so you should not need to recreate an order number manually when the item is listed.

Those terms can vary by market, offer, and purchase type, so treat the online form as a request for review rather than an automatic return policy.

A recent purchase or limited use does not, by itself, establish that a refund will be granted. The final decision is made under the Xbox and Microsoft terms that apply to your transaction and circumstances.
Step-by-step: submit the Xbox refund request
1. Sign in to the purchasing account
Open your Microsoft account and sign in with the credentials used when you bought the game. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, check each one only until you identify the account that owns the transaction. Do not submit a request from a family member’s or another household member’s account unless that account actually made the purchase.
2. Open Order history or the Xbox digital-games refund page
From the signed-in Microsoft account, open Order history. You can also start from Microsoft’s official Xbox digital-games refund page, which directs eligible customers into the same request workflow. The order-history route is useful when you are unsure of the game’s exact title or when the purchase included an add-on.
Use the current page shown for your market. Microsoft’s guidance notes that online returns are not available in all markets, so the page or account experience may differ by country or region.

3. Select the game or other eligible item
Find the transaction in the list and select the relevant game. The same workflow can identify eligible add-on content and other digital items, but each item is evaluated under the terms that apply to its purchase type. Check the title and transaction details before continuing so you do not request a refund for a different edition, bundle component, or add-on.
4. Choose Request a refund
Select Request a refund for the item. The button is the key indication that Microsoft’s online workflow can accept a request for that transaction in your current account and market. If you do not see it, use the troubleshooting section below rather than selecting a different order at random.
5. Enter the reason and select Next
Choose the reason that most accurately describes your situation, add the requested explanation, and select Next. Keep the explanation factual and specific: identify the purchase, describe what went wrong, and distinguish an accidental purchase from a technical or account issue. The form is for the transaction you selected, so avoid combining unrelated purchases in one explanation.

Check the account, item, reason, and any other details displayed on the review screen. When they are correct, select Submit. Submission starts Microsoft’s review; it is not a confirmation that the refund has been approved.

How eligibility works
Digital games and add-ons are conditional returns
Microsoft’s published wording says: “Digital goods like apps, games, add-on content, subscriptions, movies, TV shows, and books aren’t refundable unless the offer or applicable law states that you’re eligible for a refund.” For an Xbox game purchase, that means the existence of a transaction does not create an unconditional return right.
Xbox provides separate digital-game refund terms, and those terms are the authority for the market and purchase type involved. Read the current eligibility information presented for your region when you submit the request. A rule that applies in one market, to one offer, or to one type of content may not apply to another.
Your purchase type matters
The request can be associated with a full game, an edition, or add-on content, but the applicable terms may differ. Select the exact item in Order history and describe that item in the reason field. If a bundle contains several separately listed components, do not assume that requesting one component automatically requests the others.

Microsoft expressly recognizes that applicable law may make a customer eligible even where a digital item is not ordinarily refundable. Because statutory rights depend on your location and circumstances, use the terms shown for your market and provide accurate information in the request. Do not assume that a general internet rule or another country’s policy controls your purchase.

A request is not a guarantee
Microsoft Support says, “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” “May be able” is important: the form permits a review, while the outcome depends on the relevant terms and the facts of the transaction. Neither a recent purchase nor light use alone guarantees approval.
What to do when the online option is missing

If Sales support is required, explain that the online Request a refund option is unavailable and provide the transaction details from Order history. Support can direct you to the route available in your market; it cannot change the eligibility terms that govern the purchase.
How long an Xbox refund takes
Request processing: up to 72 hours
Microsoft states that a refund request may take up to 72 hours to process. This is the review window for the request, not a promise that the money will reach your account within 72 hours and not a guarantee of approval.
Approved refunds: generally 3–5 business days
Microsoft Support’s 2026 guidance says approved refunds are generally processed within 3–5 business days and applied to the original payment option. The business-day period begins after approval; it is separate from the up-to-72-hour request-processing period. Your payment provider’s posting schedule can affect when the credit becomes visible.

Check the status instead of guessing
After submitting, use the Refund status tab identified in Microsoft’s support guidance. It is the authoritative place to see whether the request is still being reviewed or has moved forward. Keep the account signed in while checking so you are viewing the same purchase history used for the request.

The wrong game appears, or the item is missing
- Sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account that completed payment.
- Open Order history and verify the edition, bundle, or add-on title before selecting anything.
- If the transaction remains absent, use Microsoft’s support route for the account and market instead of creating a request against another order.
The Request a refund button is not shown
Microsoft says online returns are not available in all markets. The missing button can therefore reflect market availability or the terms for that purchase type, rather than a problem with your browser. Confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that you selected the correct item. If the button still does not appear, contact Sales support as Microsoft recommends.
You submitted a request but cannot see a decision
Allow the stated processing window of up to 72 hours, then check the Refund status tab. A request that is still under review is different from an approved refund that is moving through the 3–5-business-day payment period. Do not interpret the absence of a credit during the review window as proof that the request was denied.

The online form is a review mechanism, not an entitlement. Re-read the eligibility terms for your market, purchase type, and offer, and make sure the submitted explanation accurately describes the transaction. If you believe applicable law gives you a right that the ordinary digital-goods terms do not cover, state the relevant facts when contacting Microsoft support. Avoid claiming a legal entitlement unless it genuinely applies to your location and situation.
You used the wrong account or submitted incorrect details
Check which account owns the transaction and use that account for future correspondence. If a submitted request contains an error, use the available Microsoft support channel to explain the correction and refer to the transaction shown in Order history. Creating multiple requests for the same item can make it harder to tell which request is current, so check Refund status first.
