If you bought a digital PS5 game or downloadable content through the US PlayStation Store, start the refund request from PlayStation Store Transaction History while signed in to the account that paid. Open the game transaction, choose Request Refund, and complete the prompts. For a standard full-game or DLC purchase, PlayStation’s US policy generally requires both conditions: the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the content has not been downloaded or streamed.
If Request Refund is missing or the automated process does not resolve the issue, use the support route on PlayStation’s refund page. Approval is not guaranteed merely because you submit a request. Faulty content and rights provided by applicable local law can be treated differently.

Find and select the transaction for the PS5 game or DLC.

Follow the instructions shown for that transaction. The page also provides an online assistant that can help check eligibility.

If the button is unavailable, or the request flow does not solve the problem, contact PlayStation Support through the same official refund page and explain the purchase category and what happened.
The labels and page layout can change, so use the current interface shown on PlayStation’s live US support page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a console menu that no longer matches your account.
When a US digital game normally qualifies
For a full game or DLC purchased from the US PlayStation Store, PlayStation’s standard checklist has two parts. Both must be true:
- Timing: the request is made within 14 days of the purchase. This is PlayStation’s stated US support-policy window, not a promise that every request submitted during that period will be approved.
- Use of the content: the game or DLC has not been downloaded or streamed.
That second condition applies even if you did not finish installing the game or did not play it for long. Starting a download, preload, or stream means the standard checklist is no longer met. The policy does not say that deleting the game, disconnecting the console, or stopping a download restores eligibility, so do not treat those actions as a guaranteed workaround.
PlayStation also notes that faulty content can be handled differently and that you may have additional rights under applicable local law. Its US support page states: “In addition to the below, you may have additional rights under applicable local law, such as if your content is faulty.” Read the complete, current policy at PlayStation’s refund instructions before deciding how to describe a defect.
What the 14-day rule actually means
The 14-day figure is easy to misread. It is the request deadline in PlayStation’s standard US checklist for games and DLC, measured from the purchase. It is not a 14-day trial, an automatic approval period, or a guaranteed payment date. You still need to meet the no-download-or-stream condition, and PlayStation evaluates the request through its stated process.

Can you get a refund if the game already downloaded or streamed?
Under the standard US games-and-DLC checklist, no: once the content has started downloading or streaming, the two required conditions are no longer both satisfied. That includes an automatic download or preload that began without you intentionally opening the game.

You can still read the current policy and submit an inquiry when the content is faulty or when you believe another legal right applies. Describe the actual problem accurately. Do not claim that deleting an installation, turning off automatic downloads after the fact, or avoiding the game’s opening screen reverses a download or stream; the official policy does not promise that it does.
If a download is scheduled but has not started, canceling that pending activity does not itself create an approval guarantee. Check the transaction’s status and the live eligibility guidance before proceeding.

A PS5 game ordered before release is not handled exactly like an already released purchase. PlayStation’s US pre-order policy distinguishes how far ahead of release you paid. Read the full rules at PlayStation’s pre-order cancellation page.
Pre-order bought more than 14 days before release
For a purchase made more than 14 days before the release date, the US help page says you may request cancellation before release if the main content has not started downloading or preloading.
Pre-order bought 14 days or less before release
For a pre-order paid 14 days or less before release, the page describes a request window of up to 14 days from the purchase date, again requiring that the main content has not been downloaded or preloaded.
Automatic downloads and bonus content
Automatic downloads can start the main content without a deliberate manual download, so check your console’s download activity before assuming the condition is satisfied. A pre-order may also include bonus content available immediately. Canceling the pre-order can remove access to that bonus content.

Use the pre-order page’s dates and instructions for the exact transaction rather than applying the released-game rule mechanically. If the pre-order has already begun downloading or preloading, the standard cancellation condition is not met.
Identify the purchase before choosing a route
Refund controls depend on what you bought. Use this quick classification before opening support:

If you bought a voucher code from a retailer
A code printed or emailed by a retailer is a separate purchase from a digital game transaction in your PlayStation Store history. PlayStation directs customers to contact the retailer that sold the voucher about that retailer’s refund and cancellation policy. The PlayStation Store transaction-history procedure is not a substitute for the seller’s process.

Troubleshoot a missing or unsuccessful refund option
The transaction does not appear
- Confirm that you are signed in to the exact PlayStation account that paid.
- Check the purchase date and the product name in Transaction History.
- Make sure you are looking for a PlayStation Store transaction, not a retailer voucher purchase.
The Request Refund button is unavailable
Review whether the purchase is outside the 14-day US window or whether downloading, preloading, or streaming has started. Those are the two standard conditions for a released game or DLC. If the content is faulty or you believe another local-law right applies, use the support route on the official page rather than assuming the missing button ends every possible inquiry.
The automated flow does not solve the issue
Contact PlayStation Support from the official refund page. Give the transaction date, the account that made the purchase, the exact product, and whether it was downloaded, preloaded, streamed, or received through a voucher. State the problem without suggesting that you meet a condition you cannot verify.
You are close to the deadline
Submit through Transaction History as soon as possible. The stated window is 14 days from purchase for the standard US games-and-DLC checklist. Save the confirmation or reference shown by the support flow, but do not interpret submission as approval.

You received an error after starting a download
Record the error message and describe when the download or stream began. Do not delete the game or repeatedly start and stop downloads in an attempt to change eligibility; PlayStation does not state that those actions restore the standard condition. Ask support whether the content may be treated as faulty.
What to prepare before contacting support
Preparing factual details makes it easier to explain the transaction without guessing:
- The PlayStation account used for payment.
- The game or DLC title and edition, if the listing offered more than one.
- The purchase date shown in Transaction History.
- Whether the main content downloaded, preloaded, or streamed, and when that happened.
- Whether the item was a released game, a pre-order, an in-game purchase, a subscription, or a voucher obtained from a retailer.
- A concise description of any fault, including the error text or behavior.
- Any order confirmation or retailer receipt that identifies the transaction.
Do not buy hardware, a disc, extra storage, or a third-party service to make a refund request. The process is account-based; those items do not establish eligibility.
US policy versus other countries
This guide describes the United States support flow. PlayStation publishes country-specific cancellation policies, and local law can change the rights available to a customer. Canada and the United Kingdom also describe 14-day frameworks for games, but their jurisdictional terms, product categories, and legal wording are not identical to the US policy. If your account is registered outside the US, use that country’s PlayStation support page and cancellation policy rather than assuming the US checklist applies. The country associated with the account and store transaction matters more than where the console is physically being used.
What happens after you submit
PlayStation’s cited support pages do not publish a universal approval percentage, average processing time, or guaranteed date for funds to appear. Do not rely on an online estimate or assume that submitting the form automatically authorizes a refund. Follow the status or follow-up instructions shown for your transaction and respond if support requests more information.
If the request is declined, review the reason provided and the applicable policy for your product category and country. A declined standard request does not prove that every faulty-content or local-law issue has been decided; explain a genuine defect through the support route if that is the basis of your claim.
How to avoid common mistakes
Most confusion comes from treating every digital purchase as the same. A released game, a pre-order, an in-game consumable, a subscription, and a retailer voucher can appear related in your overall spending history, but they have different routes. Identify the seller and product first, then use the matching support page.
Do not rely on the purchase date alone. For a released game or DLC, the 14-day condition and the no-download-or-stream condition work together. For a pre-order, the relevant date may be how far before release you paid, and the main content must still not have downloaded or preloaded. Immediate bonus content can also be affected when a pre-order is canceled.
Be precise about what happened. “I changed my mind” and “the game displays a reproducible fault” are different descriptions. If you report a defect, include the error text or behavior and when it appeared. If you are unsure whether a download or stream began, say so rather than guessing; support can review the transaction and the applicable category.

Is the content faulty? Describe the defect to PlayStation Support; faulty content may be treated differently.
