For a U.S. PlayStation account, begin in PlayStation Store Transaction History: open the purchase, choose Request Refund, and follow the prompts. If that option is missing or the request cannot be completed, use the PlayStation online assistant or contact PlayStation Support. Eligibility depends on the purchase type, how long ago you paid, and whether you downloaded, launched, streamed, or used the content.
The rules below summarize PlayStation’s U.S. cancellation guidance and Terms of Service. Other account regions can apply different windows and consumer rights, so check the policy for the country assigned to your PlayStation account. PlayStation’s U.S. guidance also says its policy does not remove rights that may exist under local law.
Quick path: submit the request from Transaction History
- Sign in to the PlayStation Store account that made the purchase.
- Open Transaction History and select the transaction in question.
- Choose Request Refund, if the option is shown.
- Answer the on-screen questions and submit the request.
- If the transaction is not eligible through that screen, or the option is unavailable, use the PlayStation online assistant or contact PlayStation Support.
Have the account’s Online ID, sign-in email address, and the name of the purchase ready. Support may need those details to locate the transaction and verify the account.
Submit promptly rather than waiting for a sale to end, a subscription to renew, or a pre-order to begin downloading. The relevant date can be the purchase date, signup date, or release date, depending on the category. Save the transaction date, amount, and any error or download information before contacting Support.

Which country’s policy applies?
Refund rules are tied to the region of the PlayStation account, not necessarily the country where you are currently using the console. The eligibility windows described here come from PlayStation’s U.S. refund guide and U.S. Terms of Service, accessed October 13, 2026. A different account region can use different deadlines, statutory cancellation rights, or procedures. If local law gives you a remedy for faulty digital content or another problem, the U.S. policy says those rights are not limited by its cancellation rules.
Do not assume that a U.S. 14-day rule applies everywhere, or that moving a console or payment card changes the account region. Open the cancellation policy associated with the account country before relying on a deadline. When you contact Support, state the account region if there could be confusion about which rules apply.

The category matters even when the same card, account, and date are involved. A game is tested for downloading or streaming; a consumable is tested for whether the game was launched; a subscription is tested from signup and first payment; and a pre-order is tested against release timing and preloading. Classify the transaction before choosing an explanation.

The ordinary U.S. test for a game, add-on, or season pass has two parts: the request must fall inside the 14-day period shown in the table, and the content cannot have been downloaded or streamed. Starting a download or streaming the title can therefore remove the ordinary change-of-mind route even if the deadline has not passed.
PlayStation identifies faulty content as an exception. Describe the defect clearly when you contact Support rather than presenting a technical failure as a simple price complaint. Include what fails, when it began, and whether the problem affects the whole title or a particular add-on. The result can depend on the nature of the fault, the account region, and rights provided by local law.
A later discount does not reset the 14-day clock. If you bought the game at full price and then saw a sale, you can still apply under the normal cancellation test only if the content remains otherwise eligible. Explain the actual basis for the request—such as an eligible undownloaded purchase or a fault—rather than suggesting that the sale alone creates an entitlement.
In-game consumables
Consumables include virtual currency, skins, boosts, and similar items that are used inside a game. In addition to the 14-day request period, the U.S. guide requires that the purchase was made through PlayStation Store and that the game was not launched after the purchase.

A consumable bought outside gameplay may be delivered when the game is next launched. A consumable bought while already playing is delivered immediately. Launching the game after an off-game purchase can therefore affect eligibility, even when you have not spent the item.
If you are considering a refund, do not launch the game merely to check whether an off-game purchase arrived. Record whether the game was open when you paid, the time it was last launched, and whether the item was delivered. Tell Support those facts accurately; the launch condition is different from the download rule for a full game.

Subscriptions: refunding the first payment versus stopping renewal
A subscription request is measured from the date you signed up and concerns the first payment, not an ordinary recurring fee. The request must be made during the 14-day period. Any free-trial time is included: PlayStation’s example says that a seven-day trial followed by a charge leaves seven days after that charge, rather than creating a fresh 14-day period.
If you used the subscription, PlayStation may reduce the refund to account for the time or service consumed. Explain when you noticed the charge and how much of the service was used so Support can apply the appropriate calculation. A request made after a renewal is not automatically treated like a first-payment request; identify whether the charge was the initial payment or a later recurring fee.

When you turn off renewal, the subscription normally remains active until the next payment date and then ends. That prevents another charge but does not itself reverse the payment already taken. If the immediate goal is to stop future billing, cancel renewal first; if the goal is to recover an eligible payment, submit the separate refund request.
Digital pre-orders
Pre-orders placed more than 14 days before release
For this category, the U.S. guide says the request must be made before the scheduled release date. The main game must not have started downloading or preloading, unless the content is faulty. The key date is the release date, not simply 14 days after the order.
Pre-orders placed 14 days or less before release
These requests use a purchase-based period. You can still request cancellation after release if the request remains within 14 days of the transaction and the main content has not started downloading or preloading. This is why a purchase made close to release can have a different deadline from one made months earlier.
Prevent an automatic preload
A console can begin a pre-order download automatically, even when you did not manually press a download button. Check automatic-download settings as soon as you decide that you may cancel, and avoid leaving the console to perform a scheduled preload. If a pre-order included bonus content that was available immediately, canceling can stop that bonus from working.
When describing a pre-order issue, state the order date, scheduled release date, whether the main content or bonus was available, and whether any automatic download began. Do not describe an order as untouched if the console has already started preloading it.
Price problems: sale price versus incorrect checkout price
A later sale does not normally create a refund right
Under section 8.9 of the U.S. Terms of Service, a temporary or permanent price drop after your purchase does not by itself entitle you to a refund. The relevant language says: “If the price for any content or services you purchased temporarily or permanently drops, you will not be entitled to a refund (unless your purchase independently qualifies for a refund under the PlayStation Store Cancellation Policy).”
You can still submit a request if the transaction independently meets the applicable cancellation test—for example, an eligible game that was not downloaded and is still inside its request period. The sale itself is not the reason for approval. A screenshot of a later sale can explain why you are asking, but it does not replace the purchase-type requirements.

An incorrect price at checkout is a different issue
The Terms of Service separately address a pricing error on an item ordered. PlayStation says it may contact you so you can either confirm the purchase at the correct price or cancel it. If it cannot reach you, the order may be canceled automatically. Keep evidence of what the checkout screen displayed and describe the discrepancy precisely when contacting Support.

For example, distinguish “the game went on sale two days later” from “the checkout page showed one price and the order confirmation showed another.” Those are different fact patterns, and Support needs the transaction details to assess the latter.
Unrecognized or potentially unauthorized charges
Do not treat an unfamiliar charge as an ordinary change-of-mind refund until you identify it. First open Transaction History and compare the amount and date with:
- a recurring subscription payment;
- a purchase made by a child or another family member;
- a duplicate transaction;
- another PlayStation account using the same payment method.
Check the exact account shown in the transaction record, not only the card statement description. Family members can use different Online IDs, and a recurring subscription can look unfamiliar if the signup happened months earlier.
If someone may have used your email address or payment details to create an account or make a purchase, contact PlayStation Support as soon as possible. If you do not have a PlayStation account but your email or payment details were used, change the email-account password immediately.
If the account may be compromised
Prioritize account recovery and security rather than waiting for a normal refund decision. Secure the email account associated with PlayStation, follow PlayStation’s account-recovery steps, and tell Support that you suspect unauthorized access. If a console was stolen, PlayStation’s security guidance includes signing out on all devices, deactivating consoles, and considering removal of saved payment methods.
Do not create a second explanation that calls a confirmed unauthorized transaction a price complaint. Tell Support whether you recognize the account, whether a family member could have made the purchase, and whether your email or payment credentials may have been exposed.
What to expect after approval
PlayStation’s U.S. refund FAQ gives an estimate of 30 to 60 days for a refund, as stated on its support page accessed October 13, 2026. This is a support estimate, not a guaranteed arrival date; payment providers and individual cases can take different amounts of time.
PlayStation says it sends the money to the original payment method where possible. If that method cannot receive the refund, PlayStation may credit the PlayStation wallet instead. Once a refund is confirmed, check the destination that Support specified. For a card or other external method, ask the payment provider if the credit is pending. For a wallet refund that is missing, contact PlayStation Support.

A confirmation of approval and the arrival of funds are separate events. Keep the confirmation, transaction number, and date of approval until the credit appears. If the original payment method has been closed or replaced, tell Support and ask whether the wallet will be used instead.
Troubleshooting when the request button is missing
The transaction is not listed
- Confirm that you are signed in with the Online ID that made the purchase.
- Check whether another family or linked account used the payment method.
- Compare the transaction date and amount with your bank or card statement.
- Have the sign-in email, Online ID, and exact purchase name ready for Support.
If the transaction still cannot be found, do not submit a different purchase as a substitute. Give Support the statement date, amount, and any order information so it can search the correct account.
The content was downloaded or streamed
For ordinary game, DLC, and season-pass requests, downloading or streaming generally removes the standard cancellation route. If the content is defective, explain the fault and ask Support to assess it under the faulty-content exception and any rights available in your region.
The game was launched after a consumable purchase
State whether the purchase was made during gameplay or outside the game and when the game was last launched. The launch condition is specific to consumables, so do not assume the rules for a full game or DLC apply.

The subscription has already renewed
Turn off renewal to prevent another charge, then check whether the payment is the first payment covered by the subscription rule or a recurring fee. Include the signup date, trial dates, charge date, and amount in your Support request.
A pre-order began downloading
Check the console’s automatic-download history and tell Support whether any part of the main content or an immediate bonus was downloaded. A preload can affect the ordinary pre-order cancellation condition even if you did not start it manually.
The purchase was a wallet top-up or outside voucher
The U.S. FAQ says a wallet top-up cannot be canceled through the normal refund process. A voucher code purchased from a retailer outside PlayStation Store is handled under that retailer’s policy, so contact the seller rather than submitting it as a PlayStation Store content refund.

A concise, complete description makes it easier to route the case. Include:
- your Online ID and sign-in email address;
- the exact purchase name, date, and amount;
- the purchase category: game, DLC, consumable, subscription, pre-order, wallet top-up, voucher, or online ID change;
- what happened after purchase, such as downloading, streaming, launching, using an item, or receiving a subscription trial;
- the specific problem: later sale, checkout price error, faulty content, duplicate charge, or suspected unauthorized use;
- the preferred contact details for follow-up.
For a price error, include the price displayed at checkout and the price actually charged. For a suspected unauthorized charge, include the date you noticed it and whether you have already secured the email account. For a subscription, provide the signup and trial dates separately from the renewal date.

Do not submit multiple contradictory explanations. If you believe the account was compromised, say so directly and ask for security and transaction assistance.
Common mistakes that reduce the chance of a clean resolution
- Waiting while a deadline runs out instead of submitting as soon as the problem is noticed.
- Launching a game after buying an off-game consumable when you are considering a refund.
- Allowing a pre-order to preload automatically.
- Confusing cancellation of subscription renewal with reversal of a payment.
- Asking PlayStation to refund a voucher bought from a separate retailer instead of contacting that retailer.
- Assuming a later discount guarantees a refund.
- Ignoring linked accounts, child purchases, or recurring billing when investigating an unfamiliar charge.
- Removing account security controls or saved payment methods only after contacting Support about a suspected compromise.
- Assuming the 14-day period starts after a free trial or after a subscription renewal.
- Describing a checkout price error as a later sale, which can send the request down the wrong path.
Practical decision checklist
- Identify the account region and locate the transaction in Transaction History.
- Classify the purchase correctly; the rules for a subscription or consumable are not the same as those for a game.
- Record whether the content was downloaded, streamed, preloaded, launched, or used.
- Separate a later price drop from a price displayed incorrectly at checkout.
- For an unfamiliar charge, check subscriptions, family accounts, duplicate entries, and other linked accounts before describing it as unauthorized.
- Submit through Request Refund when available; otherwise use the online assistant or contact Support.
- After approval, monitor the original payment method or wallet and allow for the stated 30-to-60-day estimate without treating it as a promise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a refund because a PlayStation game went on sale after I bought it?
Not normally under the U.S. Terms of Service. A later temporary or permanent price drop does not by itself create a refund right. You may still qualify if the purchase independently meets the cancellation policy, such as an undownloaded game requested within the applicable period.
What if the price was wrong on the checkout screen?
That is different from a later sale. PlayStation says it may contact you so you can confirm the purchase at the correct price or cancel it; if it cannot contact you, the order may be canceled automatically. Provide the checkout and charge details to Support.
Does canceling a subscription refund the latest payment?
