To reproduce a Linux page-cache race, you need three things working together: a debug kernel instrumented with KCSAN and lockdep, a workload that repeatedly overlaps the exact page-cache operations implicated by the bug, and logs that preserve enough configuration to replay the result. KCSAN can report sampled conflicting memory accesses; lockdep can identify invalid lock ordering or lock-context usage; neither tool proves correctness when a run is clean.
The practical rule is simple: treat every run as an experiment. Freeze the kernel, hardware, filesystem, mount, and workload matrix; change one variable at a time; save complete detector and workload output; and document intentional races with kernel annotations only after proving their synchronization under the Linux Kernel Memory Model.
What each tool can—and cannot—tell you
Page-cache races are highly dependent on the filesystem implementation, kernel revision, architecture, page size, scheduler, storage latency, and the precise operation sequence. There is no universal page-cache race harness or fixed success rate. Build the test around the failing path rather than around a generic stress command.

|---|---|---|---|
| KCSAN | Sampled conflicting memory accesses using compile-time instrumentation and watchpoints; reports access stacks, sizes, task and CPU context, and available lock information. | A sampled execution found accesses that may race under the observed memory-ordering conditions. You must verify whether the accesses are genuinely concurrent and whether the suspected invariant is violated. | It does not prove that an unreported interleaving is impossible. Sampling can miss a race, especially when the workload does not reach the path or the timing window is rare. |
| lockdep | Lock-class acquisition history, dependency ordering, recursive locking, and IRQ/softirq safety relationships. | An inverse order, unsafe context transition, or recursive use is a concrete hypothesis for deadlock or lock misuse. lockdep can expose a potential deadlock before a final deadlock occurs. | It only reasons about paths and lock contexts that execute. Missing a warning does not establish that untested paths are safe. |
| Stress workload | Operation coverage, overlap between actors, scheduler and storage perturbation, and repeatability over a chosen window. | It raises the chance that KCSAN samples the race and that lockdep sees the relevant lock graph. | Stress is part of detector setup, not a proof of correctness. A long run with the wrong operations can provide no useful coverage. |
Linux kernel documentation describes KCSAN as a dynamic race detector that relies on compile-time instrumentation and a watchpoint-based sampling approach. The lockdep design documentation describes mathematical closure for each simple, standalone single-task locking sequence that actually occurred during the kernel’s lifetime; that guarantee does not extend to lock sequences your workload never exercised.

Freeze a reproducible test matrix
Before changing code or tuning timing, record the complete environment. Page-cache behavior can change when any one of these values changes:
- Exact kernel commit, local patches, compiler version, and build configuration.
- Architecture, CPU model, online CPU count, preemption model, page size, memory size, and boot parameters.
- Filesystem type and revision, filesystem image or backing device, mount options, quotas, and journaling mode.
- Storage backend, device scheduler, cache settings, and any virtualization layer.
- Workload source revision, actor count, process and thread topology, CPU affinity, random seed, iteration count, and test duration.
- KCSAN and lockdep settings, including runtime parameters and debugfs state.
Store this information beside every log. A report without the kernel commit, configuration, architecture, filesystem, mount options, CPU count, and duration is difficult to compare with another report and may not be reproducible at all.
Build and boot a debug kernel
Enable KCSAN
Enable CONFIG_KCSAN=y in the kernel configuration. KCSAN inserts instrumentation at compile time and uses sampled watchpoints at runtime, so the resulting kernel has different timing and overhead from a production build. Where supported by your kernel version, also evaluate CONFIG_KCSAN_STRICT for stricter checking. The available options and semantics are version-dependent; record the final configuration rather than relying on a menu screenshot.
A typical configuration workflow is:
make menuconfig
# Enable Kernel Concurrency Sanitizer in the kernel debugging section
# Enable the locking-debug options required by your kernel version
make -j$(nproc)
make modules_install install
Boot the new kernel explicitly and save the boot command line from /proc/cmdline. KCSAN exposes controls under /sys/kernel/debug/kcsan when debugfs is mounted. Runtime parameters documented by the kernel include kcsan.skip_watch, kcsan.udelay_task, and kcsan.udelay_interrupt. These parameters alter sampling or injected delay and therefore alter the experiment; record them with each run.
Enable lockdep and locking debug checks
Enable the locking-debug configuration required by your kernel version. The debugging guide identifies CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCKDEP as a prerequisite for lockdep diagnostics. The exact set of dependent options can change, so inspect the configuration generated for the target commit and preserve it in the run record.

Lockdep constructs a dependency graph from observed lock acquisitions. It checks lock-class ordering, inverse ordering, recursive locking, and whether locks are used safely from process, hard-IRQ, or soft-IRQ contexts. Its value is greatest when the workload reaches all relevant entry points and context transitions.
Keep debug and production kernels separate
Do not compare a clean KCSAN run directly with a production run as though they had identical timing. Instrumentation, watchpoint delays, lockdep bookkeeping, and debug assertions can change scheduling and memory pressure. Use the production configuration as the baseline, then document every debugging difference.
Design a workload that overlaps the suspected page-cache operations
Start from the operation named in the bug report or failing assertion. Then create at least two actors whose lifetimes overlap at that operation. The following patterns are starting points, not claims that every filesystem implements them identically.
Buffered read versus buffered write
Run readers and writers against overlapping offsets and file sizes. Vary alignment, access length, and whether readers revisit pages that writers dirty. Keep enough concurrency to overlap the accesses rather than merely running a reader and writer sequentially.
Truncation or invalidation versus faults
Have one actor truncate, punch, invalidate, or otherwise remove cached ranges while another actor performs buffered reads, writes, or page faults. Include file growth and shrink cycles if the suspected bug involves index or mapping updates.

Writeback versus mutation
Combine dirtying operations with writeback pressure and metadata changes. Storage latency, memory pressure, and the filesystem’s writeback implementation can determine whether the relevant window opens, so record those conditions and vary them deliberately.
Memory mapping versus invalidation
Exercise mapped access while another actor invalidates or changes the underlying file range. Include faulting of previously untouched pages and repeated unmapping or remapping if those actions are part of the report.
Increase overlap methodically:
- Repeat the smallest operation sequence that reaches the suspected code.
- Vary process and thread counts instead of assuming that more workers always improve coverage.
- Run with different CPU affinities and online CPU counts to change migration and interleaving opportunities.
- Introduce controlled delays immediately before and after the suspected operation, not random sleeps throughout the test.
- Vary scheduler pressure, memory pressure, and storage latency one at a time.
- Use independent seeds and preserve the seed for every run.
A generic file-copy or filesystem stress test is useful only if it actually reaches the page-cache operation under investigation. Confirm this with tracing, debug counters, or carefully placed temporary diagnostics before interpreting a clean detector run.
Run KCSAN as a sampling experiment
Establish a baseline
- Boot the instrumented kernel with the original workload configuration.
- Mount debugfs and capture the KCSAN control state under
/sys/kernel/debug/kcsan. - Run the smallest reproducer without extra delays or altered watch frequency.
- Save the complete console and kernel log, not only the final warning.
- Record start time, end time, seed, iteration count, CPU affinity, and exit status.
A KCSAN report should include both access stacks, access sizes and types, task and CPU information, and held-lock information when present. Preserve all of it. Truncating a report to the first stack often removes the information needed to decide whether the accesses are truly concurrent.
Adjust sampling and delays deliberately
If the baseline does not report anything, change one KCSAN parameter at a time. The documented kcsan.skip_watch setting changes watchpoint frequency; kcsan.udelay_task and kcsan.udelay_interrupt alter delays in task and interrupt contexts. A setting that makes a report appear is evidence about timing or observation probability, not proof that the modified run alone represents production behavior.

Run a control case after each promising change. If the report disappears when a delay or CPU count changes, keep both outcomes and the exact settings. The disappearance is a scheduling or sampling clue, not evidence that the underlying code became safe.
Classify a KCSAN report
- Identify the two accesses and confirm that their addresses or fields can refer to the same object or cache state.
- Check whether at least one access is a plain, unsynchronized access. Atomic operations and documented synchronization may change the interpretation.
- Determine which lock, barrier, reference-count protocol, or ownership rule is supposed to order the accesses.
- Compare the stacks with the page-cache invariant in the bug report: mapping lifetime, page state, index membership, dirty state, or invalidation ordering.
- Re-run with the narrowest workload that still reaches both stacks, then compare the result with a configuration that changes only one timing variable.
KCSAN can report intentional races and false positives when the synchronization protocol is not visible to its instrumentation. Do not suppress a warning merely because it is inconvenient; first establish the protocol and document it using the kernel’s supported annotations.
Use lockdep as a companion, not a replacement
Exercise the lock graph around the page-cache path
When the hypothesis includes a lock change, run the page-cache reproducer with lockdep enabled and collect the first warning. Later splats may be consequences of the initial ordering violation. Reconstruct every lock class and acquisition context shown in the splat, including whether the lock was taken from process, hard-IRQ, or soft-IRQ context.
An inverse pair—one path taking A then B and another taking B then A—is a concrete deadlock hypothesis even if no deadlock occurred during the test. An IRQ-safety warning can indicate that a lock acquired in interrupt context is also used unsafely from a context where interrupts are enabled. Recursive-lock reports require checking whether recursion is intentional and explicitly supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdd lock-torture coverage where appropriate
Enable CONFIG_LOCK_TORTURE_TEST and use its reader/writer stress parameters as a companion test when you are validating a locking primitive or lock-order change. Lock torture stresses core kernel locking mechanisms; it does not substitute for a filesystem workload that reaches the page cache. A passing torture run therefore cannot clear a filesystem-specific race.

Interpret a clean lockdep run correctly
lockdep’s strongest guarantee applies to simple, standalone locking sequences that actually occurred. If your workload never exercised a mount-error path, reclaim path, interrupt context, or alternate filesystem operation, lockdep has no evidence about that sequence. Expand path coverage before treating an absence of splats as meaningful.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture logs and triage failures
Use one directory per run and keep detector output, workload output, and environment metadata together. At minimum, save:
- Complete KCSAN reports and lockdep splats, with the first warning clearly identified.
- Kernel commit, compiler, configuration, architecture, CPU count, memory size, page size, boot parameters, and module list.
- Filesystem type, image identifier, mount options, backing storage, and filesystem-specific feature settings.
- Workload revision, command line, seed, actor counts, CPU affinity, iteration count, start and end timestamps, and exit status.
- KCSAN debugfs state and every runtime parameter used.
- Any tracing, assertions, page-cache counters, or temporary instrumentation used to confirm path coverage.
When KCSAN reports nothing
- Verify that both suspected functions execute; a successful workload completion is not proof of path coverage.
- Check that the actors overlap in time rather than merely touching the same file at different times.
- Increase repetitions or alter one scheduling variable, then restore the baseline and compare.
- Try different CPU affinities and CPU counts while keeping the filesystem and workload constant.
- Review watchpoint and delay settings; a clean result under one sampling configuration is only a negative observation.
When lockdep reports nothing
- Confirm the lockdep configuration is active in the booted kernel.
- Exercise error, reclaim, remount, close, and unmount paths if they can acquire the relevant locks.
- Check for lock classes created only under a particular filesystem or mount option.
- Use lock torture for primitive-level coverage, then return to the filesystem reproducer for path-level coverage.
When reports are noisy or contradictory
- Start with the first warning and preserve ordering by timestamp.
- Separate reports from independent runs; do not merge stacks from different kernel commits.
- Reduce the workload to the smallest reproducer that retains both accesses or the lock inversion.
- Change one factor at a time so that a disappearance has diagnostic value.
Change one variable at a time
The most informative sequence is:
- Reproduce on the original kernel configuration and workload.
- Change only KCSAN sampling or delay settings.
- Restore the baseline, then change CPU count or affinity.
- Restore the baseline, then change preemption or scheduler pressure.
- Restore the baseline, then change storage latency or backend.
- Restore the baseline, then vary workload concurrency or actor timing.
- Only after these comparisons, test a code change or alternate filesystem.
For each change, report whether the warning appeared, disappeared, or changed stacks. A change that removes a warning may have prevented observation, altered the interleaving, or avoided the code path; it is not automatically a fix.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11How long should you stress a workload?
There is no authoritative universal duration, success probability, or iteration count for reproducing page-cache races. The required window depends on the race, kernel revision, hardware, filesystem, workload, and detector sampling. Upstream documentation provides tunable controls but does not define a duration that makes a clean run trustworthy.
Choose a duration based on the bug’s known frequency and the coverage you can demonstrate, then report the exact duration. Prefer several independent runs with different seeds and affinity choices over one opaque marathon run. Stop only when you have either a report, a controlled negative result across the planned matrix, or a practical resource limit that you state explicitly. Even a clean result after all those runs means only that no report was observed under those conditions; it does not show that the race cannot occur.
Document intentional races instead of hiding them
Some lock-free or read-mostly protocols intentionally permit races under a defined memory-ordering model. KCSAN documents data_race(...), __data_racy, function exclusions, compilation-unit exclusions, and explicit assertions such as exclusive-writer checks. Use the narrowest annotation that matches the proven protocol.
- Describe which actor owns writes and which actors may read.
- Identify the barrier, lock, sequence counter, reference count, or other mechanism that orders publication and observation.
- Check the argument against the Linux Kernel Memory Model, including required ordering and lifetime guarantees.
- Add the annotation or assertion together with a comment explaining why the access is safe.
- Re-run KCSAN and lockdep to ensure that the annotation removes only the intentional report and does not conceal a second unsynchronized access.
An exclusion without a synchronization explanation converts a useful diagnostic into silence. Keep the explanation close to the code and in the bug record so future changes can be checked against the same protocol.

A practical run checklist
- Environment: kernel commit, compiler, architecture, CPUs, memory, page size, boot parameters, filesystem, mount options, storage, and workload revision recorded.
- Kernel: KCSAN enabled, required lockdep debugging enabled, optional strict checking noted, and the booted configuration verified.
- Workload: actors overlap the suspected page-cache operations; seeds, affinities, counts, and path-coverage evidence saved.
- Observation: complete KCSAN and lockdep output retained, including first warning, stacks, access sizes, contexts, and held locks.
- Experiment: baseline run completed; each subsequent change alters one variable and is reversible.
- Interpretation: reports triaged against the page-cache invariant and lock graph; clean runs described as negative observations, never as proof.
- Intentional behavior: synchronization protocol established under LKMM before applying a race annotation or exclusion.
This workflow turns a rare page-cache failure into a sequence of testable claims: whether the workload reaches the path, whether KCSAN observes conflicting accesses, whether lockdep finds an invalid relationship, and whether the proposed synchronization actually orders the operations.
