If your streaming data shows an unexplained spike, unfamiliar territory, suspicious playlist, or other sign of artificial activity, preserve the evidence and contact the label or distributor that delivered the release as soon as possible. Ask them to review the activity with the relevant streaming service. For Spotify, report a suspicious playlist through Spotify’s artist reporting route as well. Do not buy more streams or engagement to offset the activity: an unusual pattern is a reason to investigate, not proof that you intentionally manipulated streams.
What to do first
Start by protecting the record of what happened. Do not delete the affected track, change its metadata, or attempt to dilute the numbers with additional promotion before you have documented the activity. Save the release and track identifiers, the dates involved, analytics screenshots or exports, suspicious playlist links, unfamiliar locations or traffic sources, and details of every promotion service connected with the release.
Then contact the distributor or label responsible for delivering the release. The distributor is normally the practical escalation route because platforms review suspected manipulation through their partner systems. State that you suspect unsolicited or abnormal activity, identify the track and reporting period, describe the evidence, disclose any promotion service you used, and ask the distributor to submit the case to the streaming service for review.
- Preserve: analytics, playlist information, release identifiers, dates, and correspondence.
- Report: the abnormal activity to your distributor or label promptly.
- Use the platform route: report a suspicious Spotify playlist directly when applicable.
- Stop risky activity: do not purchase guaranteed streams, followers, or playlist placement.
How to recognize activity that merits investigation
Streaming services do not treat every unusual result as fraud. A legitimate campaign, a viral post, a recommendation-system change, or coverage in a new country can also produce a sharp increase. The following patterns are warning signs that should trigger documentation and a review, but none proves intentional artificial streaming by itself.

A sudden rise followed by a drop
A brief, unexplained surge followed by a rapid return to the previous level can indicate low-quality or automated listening. Compare the change with your actual release, advertising, social posts, press coverage, and touring schedule. Record the exact dates rather than describing the event only as “a spike.”
Activity in an unfamiliar territory
Look for a country or region where the track has not previously attracted listeners and where you did not run a campaign. A new territory is not automatically suspicious: editorial placement, user sharing, or a legitimate marketing effort can create international activity. The useful evidence is the combination of location, timing, volume, and source.
Most streams attributed to an unexpected source
Spotify for Artists can show source categories. A sudden concentration in an unexpected category such as “Other” deserves attention, especially when it appears with an abrupt geographic or follower change. Capture the source breakdown and the date range shown in the dashboard.

A short-lived follower increase
A rapid burst of followers that disappears or stops almost immediately can accompany low-quality promotion. Compare follower growth with genuine audience activity, saves, playlist additions, comments, and traffic from your own campaign. Treat the pattern as a clue, not a conclusion.
A playlist you did not solicit
Check the playlist name, curator profile, track position, date added, and whether other artists report similar treatment. If the playlist appears to be generating artificial listening, preserve its public link and report it even if you did not pay for placement. Being added without your knowledge does not make you responsible for the curator’s conduct, but prompt documentation gives the distributor and platform something specific to inspect.

Evidence to collect before contacting support
Support teams can investigate more efficiently when the request is precise and reproducible. Create one folder or case document for the affected release and keep the original files. Screenshots should include the dashboard date range and labels; exports are preferable when the portal offers them.

Do not edit screenshots to emphasize a number, and do not omit a promotion service because you are concerned it may look unfavorable. A complete account is more useful than a selective one. The required fields differ by distributor, so provide the information requested in that distributor’s support form or account portal.

- Open the distributor’s support route. Use the support center or account contact method for the distributor that delivered the release. If a label manages delivery, notify the label as well.
- Identify the release. Include the artist name, release and track titles, and the identifiers shown in your distributor account.
- Define the period. Give the exact date range and, where available, the dashboard’s timezone or reporting period.
- Describe the indicators. Explain the spike, territory, source category, follower change, playlist, or other observation without claiming that it proves fraud.
- Attach evidence. Add analytics screenshots or exports and links to suspicious playlists. Keep the original files in case the case is escalated.
- Disclose promotion activity. Name every service, campaign, or playlist submission used during the period and explain what it promised.
- Ask for a specific action. Request that the distributor review the activity with the streaming service and tell you whether more information is required.
- Keep the case number. Save the submission confirmation and replies, and respond in the same ticket when possible.
A useful request is factual and narrow. You are asking for an investigation, not demanding that the platform accept your interpretation. Do not promise that the activity was entirely outside your control unless you can support that statement; instead, explain what you observed and what legitimate promotion you did or did not authorize.
Spotify: report the distributor case and the suspicious playlist separately
Spotify’s guidance places the broader investigation through the label or distributor. Send the analytics and promotion details to that partner so it can report the matter to Spotify. Spotify also provides artists with a way to notify it directly about a suspicious playlist. Use that route when a playlist is the identifiable source, while still opening the distributor case for the release-wide pattern.
When the direct playlist report is useful
- You were added to a playlist you did not request or pay for.
- The playlist appears alongside an abrupt stream or follower change.
- You can provide the playlist’s public link and the date the track was added.
What the distributor needs beyond a playlist link
A playlist report alone may not explain activity from other sources or territories. Include the stream timeline, source category, follower data, and any promotion history so the distributor can assess the complete release rather than one page.

Reporting activity on other streaming services
For services other than Spotify, use the service’s available artist portal or reporting tool and contact the distributor responsible for delivery. The exact access level differs: some reporting and fraud data is available to artists, while other reports are partner-facing.

Partner tools can include daily Flagged Streams and In Review Content reports, Excluded Streams reports, and financial reporting that shows stream-manipulation adjustments. Apple announced on September 28, 2026 that its Music Analytics API would add a Disguised Listening Report identifying cases in which content is used as cover while manipulative users stream unrelated material. Artists who cannot access these partner reports should ask their distributor or label to inspect and interpret them.
Do not assume that a finding on one service automatically applies to every service. Each DSP uses its own detection systems and makes its own determination. Send the same factual timeline to the relevant distributor, but identify the service and account involved in each report.
Message template for a support request
Adapt the following structure to the distributor’s form rather than pasting it unchanged when the form asks for different fields:
Subject: Request to review suspected abnormal streaming activity — [track title] — [date range]
I am reporting suspected unsolicited or abnormal activity for [artist] — [track/release title].
Release or track identifier: [identifier]
Affected period: [start date] through [end date]
What I observed:
- [stream or listener change]

What a platform review can mean
An alert, an abnormal pattern, or a distributor notice does not necessarily mean that you deliberately generated streams or that the release has already been removed. Platforms use different systems and can reach different conclusions. The distributor or label may also apply its own account policies while the DSP is reviewing the activity.

Spotify says the distributor or label royalty report is the most accurate source for understanding royalty results. A dashboard, public stream count, and royalty statement can therefore differ because activity may be filtered at different stages. Some detected activity can be removed before it appears in an artist dashboard, while private analytics can retain a historical spike after public metrics have been corrected.
Fees and distributor policies
Fees are not universal. They depend on the distributor, territory, account terms, and the platform notice involved. TuneCore currently states that it passes through a €10 monthly per-track fee for tracks identified in Spotify’s fraud report. According to that policy, TuneCore sends an email and invoice naming the impacted tracks. This is a TuneCore policy statement, not a standard charge applied by every distributor.
If you receive an invoice or warning, compare the named track and period with your records, read the account terms that apply to you, and ask the distributor to explain the basis for the charge. Do not infer from a fee alone that you intentionally caused the activity. Conversely, do not ignore a notice: failure to respond can leave the distributor without the context needed to review an unsolicited playlist or campaign.
What not to do while the case is open
Do not buy replacement streams or engagement
Purchasing streams, followers, or guaranteed playlist placement can create additional artificial activity and make the pattern harder to interpret. Spotify warns that paid guarantees may violate its terms and may rely on artificial methods. Distributor guidance also warns against these offers. Buying more engagement to “balance” a suspicious spike does not erase the original event.

Do not hire a service that promises a guaranteed result
Legitimate promotion introduces music to potential listeners and leaves the listening decision to them. A service that guarantees a number of streams, followers, or playlist placements is materially different from ordinary advertising or audience development. Save its promises and invoices if you already used it, disclose them to the distributor, and stop the campaign while the case is reviewed.
Do not delete useful evidence
Removing a playlist, canceling a campaign, or deleting messages can make it harder to establish what occurred. Preserve copies first. If a platform or distributor instructs you to take a specific action, follow that instruction and record when you did it.
Do not publicly accuse a curator or service before the review
A suspicious pattern is not proof of who caused it. Keep the initial report factual and private. Public accusations can complicate communication and may be wrong if the platform later attributes the activity to a different source.

How to monitor the case after submission
- Maintain a dated log. Record ticket numbers, submissions, replies, notices, invoices, and any change in the affected analytics.
- Check the same metrics consistently. Use comparable date ranges and note whether the figures are private dashboard values, public counts, or royalty-report values.
- Preserve new evidence. If another playlist appears or a second territory changes, add it to the existing case rather than opening unrelated duplicate tickets unless the distributor instructs you to do so.
- Ask focused follow-up questions. Request the status of the review, the tracks or dates included, any action you should take, and the policy or terms supporting a fee or restriction.
- Use the distributor’s escalation path. If the first support channel cannot answer a partner-facing question, ask for escalation to the team handling platform or royalty investigations.
There is no universal response deadline or guaranteed outcome for these reviews. The service and distributor control their investigation process, so keep communicating through the channel they identify and avoid promising an outcome to collaborators until the review is complete.
