Report a suspicious message or call without replying, clicking links, or using contact details supplied by the sender. On an iPhone, use Messages’ Report Spam or Report Junk option when it is available. In Google Messages on Android, use Block and Report spam. Then use a separate block, filter, or call-screening control if you want to reduce future contact.
For U.S. incidents, forward unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), send scam information to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, use DoNotCall.gov for unwanted calls without a reported loss, and consider an FCC complaint for imposter scams or unwanted calls and texts.
Report, block, filter, and screen are different actions
A report sends information about a suspicious message or caller to a platform, carrier, or government agency for filtering, analysis, or enforcement. Blocking is a device or account control intended to stop a particular number or contact from reaching you. Filtering sorts likely spam away from your main inbox. Screening asks an unknown caller to identify themselves or routes the call without ringing normally.

These actions can be used together, but one does not automatically perform the others. An in-app report is not a government complaint, and blocking a number does not notify a regulator. A report also cannot guarantee that a scammer will be removed or that you will receive a response.

How do I report a scam text on my iPhone?
Apple’s iPhone instructions differ slightly depending on whether the suspicious message has been opened and whether it is an iMessage, SMS, MMS, or RCS message.
Report an unopened message
- Open the Messages conversation list without opening the suspicious message.
- Swipe left on the message or conversation.
- Tap Delete and Report Spam.
- Confirm the action if iPhone asks you to do so.
This route both removes the message from your view and sends the available report through Apple’s messaging system. Do not open links or reply before reporting.
Report a message you already opened
- Open the conversation from an unknown sender.
- Scroll to the bottom of the conversation.
- Tap the Report Spam link when it appears.
- Choose the option to delete and report if iPhone presents it.
Apple says the in-message option may not appear for SMS, MMS, or RCS messages, depending on your carrier and country or region. For iMessage, the report and sender information go to Apple. If the control is missing, use your carrier’s reporting method or a U.S. reporting route described below rather than interacting with the sender.

After reporting, open the sender’s contact or message details and use the iPhone blocking control if you want to prevent that contact from reaching you. Reporting is an information-sharing action; the separate block is the control that addresses future delivery from that contact. A scammer may switch numbers, so blocking one number will not stop every later attempt.
How do I report spam texts on Android?
The steps below apply to Google Messages. Other Android messaging apps can use different names or locations for the same controls.

Report from the conversation list
- Open Google Messages.
- Touch and hold the suspicious conversation.
- Tap Block.
- Choose Report spam.
- Confirm the report.
Report from an open conversation
- Open the conversation.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Details.
- Tap Block & report spam.
- Confirm the action.
Google says a Google Messages spam report can submit the sender’s number and recent incoming messages to Google. A separate spam-reporting conversation may send the number and most recent message to your carrier. Review the confirmation text so you understand which report is being sent.
Report without submitting information
Reporting is optional. If you only want to stop a sender, use the block control without confirming a spam report when your version of Google Messages offers that choice. Menu wording and the ability to send a carrier report can vary by Android phone, app version, and carrier.
Where do I report scam calls?
Use the phone app’s controls to manage what happens on your device, then use an official agency when you want to submit a complaint or scam report.
iPhone call controls
The iPhone Phone app provides controls for screening or silencing unknown numbers, filtering calls identified as spam, and blocking a specific contact or number. These settings reduce interruptions on the phone. They do not replace a complaint to a government agency, and they do not establish who is behind a spoofed caller ID.
Choose the control that matches your goal:
- Screen unknown callers: have unfamiliar callers provide identifying information before the phone rings normally, where the feature is available.
- Silence unknown callers: send calls from numbers that are not recognized to voicemail or the appropriate missed-call list.
- Filter or identify spam: use the available carrier or iPhone spam-identification setting.
- Block a number: stop calls and messages from a particular contact on the device.
Android call controls
Google Phone supports caller-ID and spam protection and can let you mark a number as spam. Look for Report spam or a similar option in your Phone app if it offers one. Android dialers are not identical: a manufacturer’s phone app, carrier configuration, and Android version can change the menu labels.

Google’s documentation explains that information about remote numbers can be used in caller-ID and spam determinations. Treat caller-ID as a warning signal, not proof of identity. A displayed number can be spoofed to resemble a bank, delivery company, public agency, or a local number.

Can I report a scam text to my phone carrier?
In the United States, forward an unwanted text to 7726 (SPAM). This alerts your wireless provider and is separate from reporting the same incident to the FTC. Do not add a reply to the scammer; forward the message through your phone’s normal forwarding function.
Google Messages may also create a carrier-reporting conversation when you select its spam-report option. That report can include the sender’s number and most recent message. If the in-app option is unavailable, check your carrier’s official support channel or use 7726. Carrier procedures and message types supported can vary.
When should I use the FTC or FCC?
Scam, fraud, or financial loss: ReportFraud.ftc.gov
Use the Federal Trade Commission’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov route for a scam or fraud, including an incident where you lost money or have useful information about the caller. Include the details the form requests and describe what the caller or texter claimed, what they asked you to do, and what happened.
If you already gave a scammer account credentials, payment details, an access code, or other personal information, contact the relevant bank, card issuer, payment service, or account provider through a trusted channel as soon as possible. Make the FTC report as well. A phone spam report by itself is not a universal process for recovering money.

Unwanted call without a reported loss: DoNotCall.gov
The FTC’s National Do Not Call Registry guidance says, “Report unwanted calls.” For an unwanted call with no reported financial loss, use DoNotCall.gov. This route is distinct from an in-app spam label and from an FTC fraud report.
Imposter scam or unwanted call/text: FCC complaint
The FCC complaint form includes the category Phone and the issue Unwanted Calls/Texts. It is appropriate for an imposter scam or an unwanted call or text when you want to provide information to the communications regulator. Supply as much incident detail as possible. The FCC guidance notes that a recording or text screenshot can be included when available.
What information should I save before reporting a scam call?
Preserve enough detail to identify the incident, but do not keep engaging with the sender to gather evidence.
- The phone number that received the call or text.
- The caller-ID number, even when you suspect it was spoofed.
- Any callback number the caller or message supplied.
- The date and time, if known.
- A screenshot of the text or call details when an agency or carrier accepts one.
- The claim made by the caller, such as pretending to be a bank, delivery service, employer, or government office.
- What the sender requested and whether you clicked, replied, paid, or shared information.
Caller ID can be faked, so do not assume the number on your screen identifies the person or organization responsible. Include it because investigators and carriers still use the information to correlate reports, while clearly describing any callback number separately.
What should I do before and after reporting?
Before you report
- Do not click a link in an unexpected message.
- Do not reply, call back, or follow instructions in the message just to test whether it is genuine.
- Capture a screenshot or note the incident details if you need them for a complaint.
- Use the built-in report control, forward the text to 7726 in the United States, or open an official reporting site directly.
Verify a claimed business or agency independently
If a message says it is from a company or public agency, find that organization’s website or phone number independently. Type a known web address, use a saved statement or card, or look up the agency through a trusted source. Do not use the URL, QR code, callback number, or contact button supplied in the unexpected message.

After you report
Block the sender if you want to stop that number, and enable the available spam-filtering or call-screening feature for broader reduction of unwanted contact. Keep any confirmation from an official complaint. Do not expect an immediate response or removal of the scammer; reporting contributes information for filtering and enforcement rather than guaranteeing a case outcome.
Why is the report option missing?
iPhone Messages does not show Report Spam
- The message may be SMS, MMS, or RCS and your carrier or region may not support Apple’s in-message report control.
- The conversation may not qualify as a message from an unknown sender.
- Your iPhone may be using a different messaging configuration or an older software release.
Do not reply to make the option appear. Block the number, use your carrier’s official process, forward the text to 7726 in the United States, and report an actual scam to the FTC.
Android menus do not match
- You may be using a manufacturer’s messaging app instead of Google Messages.
- Your Android phone or carrier may use different labels.
- The app may offer blocking without a carrier-reporting step.
Open the conversation details and look for a spam or block control. If none exists, use the carrier’s official instructions and the appropriate government route. Never install an unknown app offered by the sender to “verify” a message.
A call app has no Report spam button
Phone-app features vary by device and dialer. Use the available block, filter, caller-ID, or screening controls, then submit the incident through the FTC, FCC, or another appropriate official route instead of assuming the device has reported it.
Are U.S. reporting routes available outside the United States?
The FTC, DoNotCall.gov, 7726 guidance, and FCC complaint process described here are U.S.-specific. If you are elsewhere, use your country’s consumer-protection or telecommunications regulator and your local carrier’s spam-reporting short code or support process. Apple and Google messaging controls can also vary by country, region, carrier, app, and device model.
