Report a suspicious calendar event through the service that put it on your calendar, and don’t click its links, open attachments, RSVP through a suspicious page, or provide a password or one-time code. The reporting control depends on whether you received a calendar event, an invitation-themed email or text, or an unwanted subscribed calendar—and on the app and version you use. For US incidents, additional reporting options include the FTC, the Anti-Phishing Working Group, and the FBI’s IC3.

First identify what you received

An unexpected “You’re invited” email or text is not the same thing as a calendar event already appearing on your calendar. It may be an attempt to get you to click a link or hand over an email password or passcode. A calendar event, by contrast, is content inside a calendar service or app. A third case is an unwanted calendar that you subscribed to, which can add events over time.

Start by identifying where the suspicious item actually lives. If it is an event in Google Calendar, use Google Calendar’s event-reporting control. If it is an iCloud invitation, look for Apple’s Junk reporting option. If it is an Outlook email, use the message-reporting control for your Outlook version. If it is a subscribed calendar, remove the subscription rather than treating each event as a separate invitation. The available controls and their effects differ by service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Calendar event: Report it in the calendar service that received or generated it, when that service offers a reporting control.
  • Invitation email or text: Report the message using the email or messaging service’s controls, and consider the US reporting routes below.
  • Subscribed spam calendar: Delete the unwanted calendar subscription in the calendar app or service.

Reporting an item to a provider is useful for that provider, but it is not automatically the same as reporting a phishing email, a text, a financial loss, or a compromised account to the appropriate agency.

When choosing a route, consider four things: what kind of item it is, which service received it, whether that particular app or version offers a report control, and whether anything more serious happened than unwanted calendar content. Provider reporting is the direct path for the event or message in that service. A separate report may be appropriate if you received a phishing email or text, disclosed credentials, lost personal information, or experienced cyber fraud. No single option described here replaces every other one.

Report an event or calendar through its service

Google Calendar: report the event as spam

  1. On a computer, open Google Calendar and click the suspicious event.
  2. Choose More actions, then Report as spam.

Google’s event-reporting control applies to events sent from Google Calendar. It does not report an event created by another provider, app, or service. Google says reporting removes the event from your calendar; if it belongs to a recurring series, reporting removes the entire series as well. Check the event details before reporting if you are uncertain whether it is legitimate, because the action affects the series rather than only one occurrence.

This removal is a practical difference from routes that report an accompanying message: the Google action removes calendar content as well as reporting it. It is not a general-purpose way to report every suspicious event you might see in another calendar app. If the event came from a different service, look for that service’s own help and reporting options instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If unwanted events are appearing automatically, Google documents a setting to limit which invitations are added to your calendar: Settings → General → Event settings → Add invitations to my calendar → Only if the sender is known. Under this setting, invitations are automatically added only from senders in your contacts, within your organization, or with whom you have interacted. Google warns that choosing this option might reveal to senders that they are not in your contacts. It changes how invitations are added; it is not a substitute for reporting a suspicious event already received.

Apple Calendar and iCloud: use Junk or delete a spam subscription

Apple Support says an unwanted or suspicious invitation in Mail or Calendar can be reported as Junk in iCloud. If the problem is an unintentionally subscribed spam calendar, delete that calendar instead. These are different actions: reporting an invitation addresses an invitation, while deleting the subscription removes the calendar feed that is adding events.

Apple’s instructions are on its Singapore English support site, so wording and availability may differ by locale, app version, or where the invitation appears. If you do not see a Junk option, check the current controls in the Apple app or service where the invitation arrived. Do not click through to a suspicious page just to decline or inspect an invitation.

In particular, distinguish an invitation arriving in Mail or Calendar from a calendar you do not intend to follow. In the first case, use the Junk reporting route where it is available. In the second, remove the unwanted calendar subscription so it stops supplying events. Reporting one invitation and deleting a subscribed calendar solve different problems.

Outlook: distinguish a message report from a calendar-item report

Outlook’s reporting steps depend on the product and version. Microsoft documents Report → Report phishing for a phishing message in Outlook.com. For Outlook on Android or iOS, its guidance is to select the email, tap the three-dot menu, choose Report Junk, then select Junk, Phishing, or Block Sender, as appropriate. Those are message-reporting paths; they should not be assumed to report every calendar item in every Outlook client.

For classic Outlook calendar items, Microsoft’s known-issue notice, last updated January 7, 2026, records that the Report button had been missing and that a fix was available in specific Microsoft 365 subscription builds: Beta version 2512, build 19524.15010; Current Channel Preview version 2512, build 19530.20000; and Current Channel version 2512, build 19530.20000. Microsoft says the fix advances to other Office channels as they receive build 19530.20000 or later. If you cannot find a report action on a calendar item, check your Outlook client and build rather than assuming the control is universally available. For a work or school account, report the event to your organization’s security team as well.

That build-specific note matters if you are comparing instructions with what you see on screen: a phishing-report option for an email does not establish that the calendar item has the same control, and a missing calendar-item button may reflect the client or build. The January 7, 2026 notice describes specific Microsoft 365 subscription builds, not a universal procedure for every Outlook product or account. Use the reporting feature exposed by your version, and use your workplace or school’s security-reporting process for a managed account.

Choose the right reporting route for the incident

The provider’s control is the direct route for an event or message inside that service. The additional routes below apply to particular message types, harms, and jurisdictions; one does not necessarily replace another. The government reporting options here are US-specific.

What happened Useful route What it covers
A suspicious event appeared in a calendar Use that calendar service’s reporting control, if available. The event within the provider’s service. The FBI advises reporting calendar phishing attempts to the calendar service.
You received a phishing email, including an invitation-themed email In the US, forward it to reportphishing@apwg.org and report the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The phishing message and the attempted fraud; forwarding the email does not itself submit a calendar event to its provider.
You received a phishing text In the US, forward it to 7726 (SPAM) and report the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The text message and the attempted fraud.
The message impersonates an organization or you were victimized by cyber fraud Report phishing or spoofing to FBI IC3. The FBI calendar-fraud guidance also directs victims to IC3 or a local FBI office. Phishing, spoofing, and cyber-fraud victimization; use the provider route too for the calendar content.
You lost personal information Use IdentityTheft.gov. Tailored next steps for identity theft.
You are unsure which US agency handles the scam Use USAGov’s report-a-scam guide. A guided route based on where the incident took place, the scam category, and other details.

These routes serve different purposes. For example, if a calendar event led to an invitation-themed email, reporting the event to the calendar service addresses the event, while forwarding the email to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and filing a report with the FTC address the message and attempted fraud. If the incident also involved phishing or spoofing, the FBI points people to IC3. If personal information was lost, IdentityTheft.gov offers tailored next steps. Select based on what occurred rather than assuming the calendar provider will notify every relevant agency.

Why report a calendar event to the provider?

The FBI’s Oregon FBI Tech Tuesday calendar-fraud guidance says: “Report calendar phishing attempts to the calendar service you use.” The FBI explains that provider reports can help services block future spam. Use the calendar provider’s route for the event itself, even if you also report an accompanying email or text elsewhere.

Invitation-themed email and text scams

The FTC’s May 2026 consumer alert describes fake party invitations sent by email or text that try to obtain email login credentials or passcodes. For a suspicious email in the US, forward it to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org; for a suspicious text, forward it to 7726. The FTC also directs people to report the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These steps concern the email or text. They do not automatically report a calendar event that was added separately.

If you are not sure whether an invitation is genuine, contact the purported host using a phone number or other channel you already trust—not details or links in the suspicious message. A familiar name or event theme is not enough to establish that the invitation is legitimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC alert concerns the invitation-themed message, not a calendar event as such. Treat the message and event as separate items if you received both: report the email or text through the appropriate messaging route, and report the event through its calendar provider when that service offers a control. Do not use a link in the invitation to verify the host or to reach a reporting page.

Phishing, spoofing, and organizational incidents

The FBI’s phishing guidance directs people to report spoofing and phishing to IC3. It also advises against clicking unsolicited links and recommends contacting a purported company through independently obtained details. For an organization, a joint advisory from CISA, NSA, the FBI, and MS-ISAC recommends using built-in reporting features in Outlook and other cloud email platforms, and reporting spam to the relevant provider, such as Microsoft, Apple, or Google.

Organizations have additional channels that are not ordinary consumer reporting routes. The joint advisory lists CISA’s report@cisa.gov and its 24/7 response line for organizations, FBI IC3 or a local field office for spoofing, phishing, or victimization, and a separate MS-ISAC channel for state, local, tribal, and territorial entities. Follow your organization’s incident-response process, and tell its security team promptly if a work or school account or calendar is involved.

For a managed account, do not treat a personal consumer route as a replacement for internal reporting. The joint advisory specifically recommends built-in reporting features in Outlook and other cloud email platforms, alongside reporting spam directly to the relevant provider. State, local, tribal, and territorial entities have a separate MS-ISAC channel identified in that advisory. CISA’s report@cisa.gov and 24/7 response line are organizational channels, not a general consumer hotline for every unwanted invitation.

What to do if you clicked or shared information

Reporting is only one part of responding. Take the next steps that match what happened:

  • If you entered an email password: Change the compromised password promptly. Use a strong passphrase. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too, starting with accounts that can reset other passwords.
  • If you provided personal information: Use IdentityTheft.gov for tailored steps. If money was lost or a financial account may be involved, contact the relevant financial institution using a known, trusted channel.
  • If you opened an attachment or clicked a link that may have downloaded malware: Update your existing security software, run a scan, and remove anything it detects. A scan is a useful response, not a guarantee that a device is clean.
  • If you only saw the invitation and did not interact with it: Do not open links or attachments to investigate. Report it through the appropriate provider control and use the relevant message-reporting route if you also received an email or text.

Do not reply to a suspicious invitation to ask whether it is real. Verify with the supposed host through a separate contact method you already trust.

Match the response to the exposure. A suspicious invitation that you only viewed calls for caution and reporting; it does not mean you should open the message again to inspect links. If you entered an email password, the FTC alert’s warning about credential theft makes changing that compromised password promptly important. If you gave up personal information, use IdentityTheft.gov rather than relying only on the calendar provider’s report button. If a link or attachment may have downloaded malware, the FTC recommends updating security software you already have, scanning the device, and removing anything detected. A scan does not guarantee cleanup, and the FTC guidance does not make a paid security product necessary.

A short, safe response checklist

  1. Pause. Do not click links, open attachments, RSVP through a suspicious page, or enter an email password or special code to view an invitation.
  2. Identify the item. Determine whether it is a calendar event, an email or text, or an unwanted subscribed calendar.
  3. Verify independently if needed. Contact the supposed host through a trusted channel that is not provided in the suspicious content.
  4. Report it where it arrived. Use the calendar provider’s event control, the email or messaging app’s report control, or delete an unwanted calendar subscription.
  5. Use additional US routes when applicable. Forward phishing email to reportphishing@apwg.org, forward phishing texts to 7726, and report the attempt to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Use IC3 for phishing or spoofing and IdentityTheft.gov if personal information was lost.
  6. Recover based on what you did. Change a disclosed password, follow identity-theft guidance if personal information was exposed, or update security software and scan if malware may have been downloaded.

If you are outside the United States

The FTC, IC3, IdentityTheft.gov, USAGov, APWG forwarding address, and 7726 instructions above are US routes. Outside the US, use the calendar or messaging provider’s local help and consult your country’s national cybercrime or consumer-protection authority for the appropriate agency. Reporting bodies and text-reporting numbers vary by country; the routes in this guide do not establish which authority applies elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I report the calendar event or the email that invited me?

If you received both, report each through the route for that item: use the calendar service’s event control when available, and report the invitation email or text through its messaging service and appropriate US routes. Forwarding an email to APWG or reporting it to the FTC does not automatically submit the calendar event to its provider.

Will reporting a Google Calendar event remove it?

Google says its Report as spam action removes the event. If it is part of a recurring series, reporting removes the entire series, so check that the event is unwanted before reporting.

What if I can’t find a report button in Outlook?

Outlook controls vary by product and version, and email-reporting steps are not necessarily calendar-item steps. Microsoft’s January 7, 2026 known-issue notice describes a fix for specific Microsoft 365 subscription builds and says it advances to other Office channels as they receive build 19530.20000 or later. Check your client and build; report work or school events to your organization’s security team too.

What should I do if I entered my password or a passcode?

Change a compromised email password promptly and use a strong passphrase. If you lost personal information, use IdentityTheft.gov for tailored steps. Do not provide additional passwords or codes through the invitation.

What if I subscribed to a spam calendar instead of receiving one invitation?

Delete the unwanted calendar subscription. Apple Support distinguishes removing a subscribed spam calendar from reporting a suspicious invitation as Junk in iCloud.

Can I use these US reporting numbers and agencies outside the United States?

The FTC, IC3, IdentityTheft.gov, USAGov, APWG forwarding address, and 7726 instructions here are US routes. Elsewhere, consult the provider’s local help and your national cybercrime or consumer-protection authority.

The Bottom Line

Report the event through the calendar service that received it, and separately report any phishing email or text through the relevant message and US reporting routes. Don’t click or reply to suspicious content; if you shared credentials, personal information, or may have downloaded malware, take the matching recovery steps promptly.
