If someone has posted or threatened to post a nonconsensual deepfake intimate image of you, preserve basic evidence if it is safe, report each post to the service hosting it, and choose a hash service based on your age when the image was made. You do not need to prove that an intimate image is authentic to ask a platform for help. Nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) means intimate images shared without the depicted person’s consent, including synthetic or AI-generated images.
What to do first
- Save identifying details if you can do so safely. Record the post’s URL, the account or profile name, relevant messages, and dates. Screenshots of the post or threat may also help document what happened. A trusted person can assist if you want support. RAINN says this information can help platforms, law enforcement, and courts respond.
- Do not redistribute the intimate image. You do not need to send it to a friend, a support organization, or anyone else to establish that you need help. Take particular care not to download or circulate imagery involving someone who was under 18 when it was made.
- Report the post to the service hosting it. Use its reporting route for nonconsensual nudity, intimate images, sexual exploitation, or privacy violations. Include the post location and account details when the form allows. RAINN maintains a directory of service-specific reporting routes.
- Repeat the report for each location. A platform’s removal of one post does not remove copies on other services, so report each distinct URL or account where the image appears.
You can report a threat even if no image has been posted. RAINN notes that a platform may still be able to help; a threat report is not the same as a request to remove a post that is already online.
Choose the right hash service for the image
A hash service creates a digital fingerprint of an image or video so participating services can look for matching material. The relevant choice is the depicted person’s age when the image was made—not their age today.

| Situation | Route | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| The person depicted was under 18 when the explicit image or video was made | NCMEC’s Take It Down | Explicit imagery made when the person was under 18, including when that person is now an adult. |
| The person depicted was an adult when the image was made | StopNCII, identified by RAINN | Adult intimate imagery, including synthetic intimate images or deepfakes, when the person can access the image. |
| You know where a post is currently hosted | Report directly to that service | A request aimed at a specific post or account. Report other known copies separately. |
If the image was made when the person was under 18
NCMEC’s Take It Down is intended for explicit images or videos made when the depicted person was under 18. In its workflow, the image stays on the user’s device and only a digital hash is shared with participating platforms. Do not submit an image to this or any other service if doing so would require you to circulate it unsafely.

If you suspect child sexual exploitation, NCMEC directs the public to its CyberTipline. NCMEC says reports it handles are made available to the appropriate law enforcement agency. An image made when a person was under 18 remains child sexual abuse material even if that person is now older, according to RAINN.
If the image was made when the person was an adult
RAINN identifies StopNCII as the adult option, including for synthetic intimate images and deepfakes when the person can access the image. A hash service can help participating services identify matching material; it is not a replacement for reporting a known post directly to its host.

What hash services can—and cannot—do
- They do not guarantee removal everywhere. Their reach is limited to participating platforms and they do not monitor the entire internet.
- They work best on exact matches. Cropped, edited, or AI-altered versions may not match the original fingerprint. If you can safely access a different version, it may need to be hashed separately.
- They may not cover encrypted messaging. A service’s participation does not mean every channel or private message can be checked.
- They may not remove older posts. Take It Down warns that platforms may have limited ability to remove material that was posted earlier.
Use direct platform reporting for a known post and a hash service to help participating services detect matching content. Neither route promises that every copy will disappear.

In the United States, the FTC says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and remove a validly reported nonconsensual intimate image, along with known identical copies, within 48 hours. The FTC began enforcing the relevant TAKE IT DOWN Act provision on May 19, 2026. This deadline applies to covered platforms and valid requests; it is not a universal deadline for every website or country.

UK platform procedures are a separate regime
The UK Government’s Crime and Policing Act 2026 intimate image abuse factsheet describes platform measures that include a 48-hour deadline after a valid report, accessible reporting routes, and expedited complaints. The factsheet alone does not establish the current implementation status of each measure. Check current UK Government guidance before relying on a particular deadline or procedure. These UK measures are separate from the U.S. FTC process.
