If you own the game, footage, soundtrack, artwork, or other copyrighted material—or are the owner’s authorized agent—save the exact upload URL and supporting evidence, then file a copyright notice with every service hosting a copy. A YouTube notice does not remove a Twitch stream, Steam upload, social-media post, or mirror automatically. Viewers who do not own the rights should preserve evidence and use ordinary reporting tools or alert the rights holder instead of submitting a legal notice.
What a copyright takedown does
A copyright takedown is a legal request from a copyright owner or authorized agent asking an online service to remove or disable access to material that uses a protected work without authorization. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s section 512 process does not require the work to be registered before a notice is sent. Registration is generally required before the owner can bring an infringement lawsuit over a United States work, however, so a notice and a lawsuit are separate decisions.
The notice goes to the service hosting or transmitting the copy, not to the internet as a whole. Each platform has its own form and review process. If the same leak appears in five places, treat it as five separate reports and keep the case numbers together.
A complete notice normally identifies:
- the copyrighted work being infringed;
- the exact location of the allegedly infringing material;
- your legal name and dependable contact information;
- your ownership or written authority to act for the owner;
- a good-faith statement that the use is not authorized by the owner, an agent, or the law;
- an accuracy statement made under penalty of perjury; and
- a physical or electronic signature.
Those statements have legal consequences. A platform may reject a vague report, and a knowingly material misrepresentation can create liability. Use the process only when you can honestly make each required certification.

Who may file a notice
Copyright owners and authorized agents
The owner of the game, video, soundtrack, artwork, trailer, or other protected work can file. An employee, law firm, rights-management company, or other representative can file when the owner has authorized that person or organization to do so. Keep the authorization in writing; a platform can ask for proof.
Ownership can be split. A publisher may own the game code and characters, a studio may own a separately commissioned trailer, and a composer or label may control music rights. Identify the particular work in the upload and confirm who controls that right before signing a notice.
Viewers, moderators, and reporters
Seeing a leak first does not make you the copyright owner. A viewer should capture the URL and facts, then send them to the publisher, developer, or rights administrator. Use the platform’s ordinary “report” function if it offers one, but do not sign a copyright notice claiming ownership or agency you do not have.

Check authorization and lawful-use issues first
A leak may look obvious while still containing material that was authorized. Check the game’s press or review-access terms, creator or gameplay policies, music and stock-asset licenses, and any embargo or contract governing the upload. Also consider whether the use is commentary, criticism, news reporting, or another use protected by applicable law. These possibilities do not automatically make a leak lawful, but they are reasons to verify the facts before making a sworn allegation.
Write down what permission was granted, to whom, for which material, and for what period. If a creator had permission to show a limited preview but posted unreleased levels, compare the permission with the actual timestamps and sections. A notice should target the unauthorized portion rather than overstate the claim.
Preserve evidence without amplifying the leak
Capture enough information for the host to locate and evaluate the material, while avoiding actions that spread it further.
- Copy the full URL. Include the protocol, path, video or post identifier, and any required query-free portion that the service uses to locate the item. Record the channel, account, or profile name.
- Record timing and labels. Note the upload or stream date, title, description, visible timestamps, and the time you discovered it. A live channel URL may be the only stable address while a stream is in progress.
- Describe the protected material. List the game, trailer, soundtrack, artwork, scene, level, or other work that appears in the upload. Note the start and end times of each relevant segment.
- Save screenshots. Capture the page, account identity, title, date, and visible content. Store the originals with their creation times.
- Keep a lawful local copy or hash where appropriate. If your jurisdiction and internal policy allow it, preserve a small evidence copy or cryptographic hash for later comparison. Do not redistribute the file or make it publicly searchable.
- Maintain an internal log. Record edits to the title, privacy setting, account name, URL changes, and later mirrors. The first version may disappear before a platform reviews the notice.
Do not quote, embed, re-upload, or link to the leaked footage in a public warning post. Public amplification can increase its reach and make it harder for the rights holder to contain.

The U.S. Copyright Office maintains a directory of designated agents for qualifying services. For a service without a clear form, search its help, legal, or terms pages for “copyright,” “DMCA,” or “designated agent,” and use the current instructions shown there.

Step-by-step workflow for a leaked game upload
1. Freeze the facts
Complete the evidence log before contacting the uploader. Save the exact URL, account, title, date, timestamps, screenshots, and a description of the copied work. If the uploader later edits or deletes the post, your original record should still show what the host was asked to review.
2. Establish ownership and authority
Identify the owner of each relevant element. If the upload combines game footage and a separately licensed song, confirm that your authority covers both or limit the notice to the work you control. If you are acting for a publisher, studio, composer, or other owner, retain the written authorization and use the authorized entity’s legal details in the form.
3. Compare the upload with permissions
Check review keys, press-access terms, embargoes, creator policies, music licenses, and contracts. Document why the particular use exceeds permission. This step supports the good-faith statement and helps prevent a notice against an authorized review, trailer, or news report.

4. File with the host
Use the host’s official copyright process, not an unrelated customer-service category. Enter one direct URL per copy when the form allows it, and give enough detail for a reviewer to find the precise segment. If a form limits the number of URLs, submit additional notices and cross-reference your internal case log.
5. Notify the publisher or other rights team
For a commercial game, send the same evidence to the publisher’s official piracy or intellectual-property channel. Nintendo accepts piracy reports and provides a separate intellectual-property notification route. Konami’s form accepts reports about illegal uploads or piracy involving videos, social posts, songs, and still images. A publisher may be able to identify ownership, coordinate multiple hosts, or address a leak that includes confidential material in addition to copyright.
6. Repeat for every copy
Search your internal monitoring sources and the information already captured in the evidence log for mirrors. Submit a separate notice to each host and, when a service creates a new URL for a re-upload, file again. A removal on one service does not remove copies elsewhere.
7. Track responses and preserve correspondence
Use a spreadsheet or case log with these columns:
- host and content type;
- full URL and account name;
- discovery and notice dates;
- confirmation or ticket number;
- copyrighted work identified;
- response, removal, restriction, or rejection;
- removal date and any later mirror URL; and
- follow-up owner and next action.
Keep the submitted notice, attachments, automated confirmations, and platform correspondence together. This record is useful if the uploader sends a counter-notification or if ownership is later questioned.

Use YouTube’s copyright removal-request process. Identify the video or other material with its direct location, describe the original game or footage, and complete the good-faith, accuracy, authority, and signature statements. Treat the submission as a legal process rather than an ordinary community flag.

Plan for identity disclosure. YouTube states that the claimant’s name may appear in place of a removed video’s listing and that the full legal name may be shared with the uploader. Use a reliable business or authorized-agent contact where appropriate, but do not provide false information. If several channels have reposted the same leak, report each URL.
Twitch
For a live broadcast, Twitch asks for the channel URL. For recorded material, use the direct VOD or clip URL rather than only the creator’s profile. The form asks for the current date, type of material, identification of the copyrighted work, contact information, a good-faith statement, an accuracy statement under penalty of perjury, and a signature. Twitch also lists email, mail, and phone alternatives for its designated copyright agent.
Because a live stream can end while a notice is being prepared, record the channel URL, stream title, account name, and relevant timestamps immediately. After the stream becomes a VOD or clip, log those new direct URLs and submit them separately if they remain available.
Steam and Valve
Use Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form for material hosted through Steam. Supply the Steam URL, describe the specific material, explain where the original work can be identified, and provide full legal contact information. The form also requires a statement of ownership or authorization, good-faith and accuracy statements, and a signature.
Valve describes a copyright claim as a serious legal matter and warns that knowingly material misrepresentation may create liability under section 512(f). Do not use the form to settle a dispute about a review, user conduct, or a trademark unless the facts actually support a copyright claim.
Other platforms, forums, and file hosts
Look for a current copyright, legal, DMCA, or designated-agent page on the service. Follow its required format exactly; some services accept a web form, while others specify email or postal delivery. Include the direct item URL, the original-work identification, contact details, authority, sworn statements, and signature unless the service requests a different process.
If the host is outside the United States, the platform may apply another country’s law or its own terms. You can still report an unauthorized upload through the host’s stated copyright channel, but obtain local legal advice before relying on United States procedures in a cross-border dispute.
What to include in the notice
Use this checklist before pressing submit:
- Identity: your legal name, organization if applicable, mailing address, email address, and another dependable contact method.
- Authority: identify the owner and state that you own the work or are authorized to act for the owner.
- Infringing location: provide every direct URL, account or channel name, upload date, and relevant timestamp.
- Original work: identify the game, footage, trailer, soundtrack, image, or other work and give an original-work URL or other details when the form permits.
- Good faith: state that you believe the challenged use is not authorized by the owner, the owner’s agent, or the law.
- Accuracy and perjury: confirm that the information is accurate and that you are authorized to act, under penalty of perjury.
- Signature and date: sign electronically or physically in the format the host accepts.
A concise notice can be clearer than a long narrative. Keep legal conclusions tied to facts: identify the copied scene, explain your authority, and state why the permission or license does not cover it.

Expect a platform decision, not an automatic judgment
A valid notice can lead to removal or disabling access, but the host may ask for clarification, reject an incomplete submission, or apply a different process. Save the confirmation and read the response carefully. If the host says the URL is inaccessible, supply the corrected direct location rather than sending the same incomplete form repeatedly.

Understand counter-notifications
The uploader may dispute a removal through the platform’s counter-notification process. A counter-notice can assert that the material was removed by mistake or that the use was authorized. Review the underlying permission, ownership chain, timestamps, and license before responding. Do not threaten the uploader, impersonate a rights holder, or continue filing claims after learning that the use is authorized.
Escalate carefully
For substantial commercial harm, a dispute spanning several countries, uncertain ownership, confidential trade information, or a likely lawsuit, consult an intellectual-property lawyer. A lawyer can assess registration timing, contract rights, jurisdiction, evidence preservation, and whether another remedy is more appropriate. Keep the platform notices and publisher reports factual; avoid public arguments that disclose more unreleased material.
Common mistakes that delay removal
- Reporting only the profile: a reviewer needs the direct video, post, clip, or file URL whenever one exists.
- Sending one notice for every platform: each host requires its own process, and one service’s removal does not reach mirrors.
- Filing as a viewer: ordinary users should report and alert the owner, not sign a sworn notice without authority.
- Skipping permission checks: press access, review copies, creator policies, licenses, and commentary can change the analysis.
- Using a vague work description: name the game, scene, soundtrack, trailer, or asset and give timestamps.
- Overclaiming ownership: distinguish publisher-owned game assets from separately owned music, footage, or artwork.
- Ignoring identity exposure: YouTube may show or share the claimant’s legal name; plan contact details accordingly.
- Re-uploading the leak as evidence: public copies amplify distribution and may create additional rights problems.
- Threatening or impersonating: false authority and knowingly inaccurate statements can create legal risk.
- Failing to monitor mirrors: maintain a case log and repeat the notice for later copies.

Can I report a leak if I am not the copyright owner?
You can preserve the URL, use the platform’s ordinary reporting tool, and notify the publisher or developer. Do not submit a DMCA notice unless the owner has authorized you in writing. The legal notice requires a statement of authority, not merely proof that you discovered the upload.
Does a game need U.S. copyright registration before I file?
No registration is required before sending a U.S.-style takedown notice. Registration is generally required before suing on a United States work, so consult counsel if removal does not resolve the harm or litigation is being considered.

For the fastest containment, send a complete notice to the host and notify the publisher’s official piracy or intellectual-property channel in parallel. The host controls the specific copy; the publisher may coordinate ownership questions and additional services.

What URL should I use for a Twitch leak?
For a live stream, Twitch requests the channel URL. For recorded material, provide the direct VOD or clip URL. Record the channel and stream details immediately because a live URL can change when the broadcast ends.
Will my name be visible to the uploader?

Recheck ownership, permissions, timestamps, and the exact material challenged. Respond through the platform’s process with accurate facts, and obtain legal advice when the dispute involves significant harm, unclear contracts, or multiple countries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a publisher remove a copy hosted by a platform without my filing a notice?
A publisher may report through its own piracy or intellectual-property channel, but the hosting platform still controls its separate copyright process. Supplying the publisher with the URL and evidence helps it decide whether to file or coordinate a response.
Should I include the entire leaked video in my submission?
No. Provide the direct URL, screenshots, timestamps, and a precise description. Preserve a local copy or hash only when lawful and necessary, and never redistribute the leak publicly.
Is an ordinary platform report the same as a DMCA notice?
No. An ordinary report is a moderation request available to general users; a DMCA-style notice is a legal statement reserved for the owner or an authorized agent and includes sworn declarations.
How do I handle several mirrors that use different accounts?
