Report the specific message, voice interaction, player behavior, username, user-created item, or game through the service that hosts it. Open the game’s in-game safety or report tool when one is available, choose the closest factual reason, and add a brief description. Use the console or platform’s separate reporting route for a gamertag, platform chat, or other platform-level material. Block or mute the player afterward if you need to stop further contact.
Menus and categories differ by game, device, region, and service. The examples below show the general process and several current official flows; your game’s support page remains the authority when its labels do not match.
Start with the exact thing that violated the rules
Before opening a report form, identify what moderators need to review. A report aimed at the wrong object can leave the relevant evidence out of scope. Common targets include:

- Voice chat or a voice interaction: use the game’s voice-report control while the interaction is still available, if the game provides one.
- Player behavior: report the player in the match, session, or recent-player list and describe the conduct.
- A username, gamertag, avatar, or profile: use the platform or game’s identity-report category.
- User-created content: report the particular map, item, image, experience, mod, or other upload.
- An entire game or experience: select the game or experience itself when the content, rather than one isolated player, is the problem.
Roblox Support specifically tells users to report the particular chat, private message, experience, or other content that violates its rules. It warns that a profile-only report may not show moderators what the person did wrong. Xbox gives a similar warning: an enforcement review may be limited to the item you reported, so a gamertag report is not automatically a report of the conversation or other conduct.

Use the closest truthful category, such as harassment, hate or discriminatory conduct, sexual content, threats, cheating, spam, or another category shown by the service. Do not select a more serious reason merely to attract attention; accurate categorization helps the correct moderation team evaluate the material.
Choose the reporting channel that owns the material
Many incidents require only one report, but platform-hosted material may need a separate platform report. Use this decision table before you submit:

EA’s guidance illustrates the distinction: use EA Help for game-specific issues when in-game reporting is unavailable, but send reports about a PlayStation or Xbox username, gamertag, or harassing platform chat to the relevant platform. Do not assume that reporting in one system automatically reaches the other.
Use the in-game report tool while the evidence is visible
Exact controls vary, but the practical sequence is consistent. Keep the interaction open long enough to identify the correct target, then submit the report before a match, chat log, or player list disappears.
- Open the safety or moderation control. Look for a flag icon, a three-dot menu, “Report,” “Report abuse,” “Safety,” or a context menu beside the message or player. Nintendo notes that many of its online services and games include built-in reporting features; Epic documents in-game reporting for supported games.
- Select the target. Choose the individual message, voice interaction, player, item, or experience. Avoid selecting only a profile when the problem was a specific action.
- Choose the closest reason. Select the category that describes what happened rather than guessing at an internal rule number.
- Add concise factual context. If there is a description field, state what was said or done, where it appeared, and approximately when. Identify the relevant player or content if the form does not already attach it.
- Review and submit. Confirm that the target and category are correct. Save any confirmation number or on-screen acknowledgment if the service provides one.
- Reduce further contact. Block or mute the account after submitting when that option is available.
Reporting text chat
Use the message-level option whenever possible. In Fortnite, Epic documents submitting text-chat messages as evidence when text reporting is enabled. A report made from a player list may identify the account, but attaching the actual message gives reviewers the material at issue.

Reporting voice chat
Some games provide a report command inside the voice interface or recent-player list. Epic describes voice-chat reporting in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys. If the game does not retain a reportable voice interaction, write down the approximate time, participants, and words or conduct in the description field; do not claim that you have a recording unless you actually do.
Reporting a player or user-created item
Open the context menu attached to the player or item, select the conduct or content category, and include the session or location if known. For user-created material, report the item itself rather than only its creator. Microsoft developer policy requires covered titles that use user-generated content to provide an in-product way to report harmful or inappropriate UGC or to use proactive detection, but that policy does not mean every game has identical controls.
Reporting an entire game or experience
If the objection concerns the experience as a whole—such as a persistent rule-breaking theme, an unsafe design, or prohibited content—select the game or experience report option. Roblox’s guidance lists an experience as a reportable target, alongside chats and private messages.
Official examples by platform and publisher
These examples demonstrate how the general method appears in named services. They are not universal button sequences; interfaces can change.
Roblox
Roblox’s Report Abuse guidance asks you to identify the particular chat, private message, experience, or other content that violates its rules. A profile-only report may not tell moderators what the user did. On Roblox for Xbox, the documented flow is to open the menu, choose the flag or Report tab, select Person or Experience, choose the subject and reason, add details if needed, and submit. The same guidance distinguishes an in-experience Roblox report from an Xbox Live complaint about an abusive Xbox player.

Roblox announced a redesigned in-game flow in July 2026 for reporting text and voice interactions, offensive players, and entire games. Treat that as a Roblox product update; it does not describe the controls in other games.

Nintendo’s support guidance covers offensive, discriminatory, bullying, and disruptive behavior on Switch 2 and its games and online services. It says many services and games include built-in reporting and describes blocking a player encountered online. Features such as GameChat can have their own procedure, so use the support instructions for the particular Nintendo feature when the ordinary game menu does not show a report option.
Epic Games and Fortnite
Epic’s safety policy provides reporting routes for suspected violations of its rules or content guidelines. It documents voice-chat reporting in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys. Fortnite also offers in-game and player-list routes, with controls that depend on the platform, and can attach text-chat messages as evidence when text reporting is enabled. Epic maintains a separate category for illegal content; use it when that category accurately describes the material.
Xbox
Xbox asks users to report the player or content item in the appropriate category and encourages blocking and muting as well. Its standards explain that an enforcement review may apply only to the reported item. For example, reporting a gamertag may initiate a gamertag review without automatically covering a conversation, image, or other conduct by that account.
EA games and platform reports
For an EA game, use the in-game reporting feature when available. If it is not available, EA directs users to EA Help for game-specific issues. Reports about a PlayStation or Xbox username, gamertag, or harassing message in platform chat belong with those platforms instead.

Write a report moderators can act on
A useful description is short, specific, and observable. The form may already attach the account, match, message, or item, so do not fill the box with repeated insults or speculation.
- State the action: “The player sent repeated sexual comments in team chat,” rather than “This person is dangerous.”
- Give the location: name the mode, lobby, map, channel, or experience if the form does not capture it.
- Give timing: include an approximate date and time, especially when the interaction occurred outside the current session.
- Identify recurrence: say whether it happened once or repeatedly, and whether blocking or leaving the session stopped it.
- Describe the evidence attached by the service: identify the message, clip, image, or item without editing it to make the claim appear stronger.
Do not include passwords, payment details, a home address, or another person’s private information. Do not threaten the reported player or organize other users to contact them. If the form has a character limit, prioritize the exact words or conduct, the target, and the approximate time.
Block or mute the account after reporting
Blocking or muting is a protective measure, not a substitute for a report. Nintendo, Epic, and Xbox all describe these controls as ways to limit future contact. Use mute when you want to stop voice or text interaction temporarily; use block when you do not want the account to contact, follow, invite, or match with you where the service supports those restrictions.
Blocking can also remove the player from your immediate view, so submit the report first if the report menu is attached to the current conversation or player list. If you have already blocked the person, use the service’s blocked-user list or recent-player history to locate the report route, if available.

Handle threats, illegal material, and immediate safety risks
Ordinary moderation is not an emergency response. If someone makes a credible threat of imminent harm, shares suspected illegal material, attempts to obtain a child’s personal information, or reveals an immediate risk to a person, leave the interaction, preserve the relevant account and message details, and use the service’s safety channel. Contact the appropriate emergency or law-enforcement service for your location when there is an immediate danger or suspected crime. Do not confront the person or try to investigate them yourself.

Epic’s safety materials include a separate route for illegal content, but the correct authority and reporting obligation depend on the user’s country and circumstances. The general game report can still be useful for preserving the service-side record; it does not replace an urgent report to the appropriate local authority.
When there is no report button
Not every title exposes the same controls, and some features hide them until a player list, message, or recent-session screen is open. Work through these checks:
- Open the message, player card, recent-player list, or item menu rather than the game’s top-level pause menu.
- Check whether the account is on a console or platform service; platform chat and gamertags may need a platform report.
- Search the publisher’s official support site for the game name plus “report,” “safety,” or “moderation.” Use the publisher’s support route if the in-game feature is absent.
- Record the title, platform, mode, approximate time, player identifier, and a factual description before the session data disappears.
- Use the service’s block or mute control immediately if you need to prevent further contact.
Exact instructions are edition- and device-specific. A guide for one platform, such as Roblox on Xbox, should not be treated as the procedure for a different device or game.

Services may acknowledge receipt, ask for more information, or provide no visible status beyond confirmation. The available guidance does not establish one universal review timeline, a guaranteed removal decision, a guaranteed penalty, or a single appeal process shared by all games and platforms. Outcomes depend on the provider’s rules, the evidence available to reviewers, and the category you selected.
A report normally concerns the item you submitted. If the same account also sent a separate platform message, used an offensive username, or posted another piece of content, submit those items through the responsible service’s route as well. Keep any confirmation details until you know the issue is resolved, but avoid repeatedly filing identical reports unless new conduct occurs.
