Report illegal material from the exact post, List, profile, or Direct Message where you found it. Select Report, choose the issue that best describes the conduct, and complete every prompt. If the content may violate European Union or member-state law, use X’s dedicated Report Illegal Content in the EU form and provide the URL, applicable country or law, legal reason, and supporting facts. Save the confirmation: X says it acknowledges properly submitted reports within 24 hours, usually resolves them within a few days, and can take up to 30 days when user input or an appeal affects the review.
Choose the right X reporting route
The correct form depends on four things: what you are reporting, why it is illegal or violates X rules, where the conduct is legally relevant, and who you are as the reporter. Use the route below rather than sending the same complaint through several unrelated forms.

Do not use the ordinary report menu when you need to explain a specific EU legal violation; the EU form has fields designed for that purpose. Conversely, being in the EU does not turn every rule violation into an EU illegal-content complaint: choose the legal route when you can identify the relevant law and jurisdiction.
Report a specific post, List, profile, or Direct Message
Use the item’s own report control
- Open the exact post, List, profile, or Direct Message conversation containing the material.
- Open the overflow or more icon.
- Select Report.
- Choose the issue category that most accurately describes the conduct.
- Complete the follow-up prompts, supplying concrete context rather than a general accusation.
- Submit the report and keep the confirmation.
Reporting the exact item gives reviewers the object they need to inspect. If you are reporting a profile, X may ask you to identify additional posts so the review team can understand the account’s broader conduct.

Posts and Lists
Report the individual post or List from its own overflow menu. A report does not automatically suspend the account or guarantee that the post will be removed. After you report a post or List, X replaces the original item for you with a notice and an option to view it. That replacement changes your view while the review is pending; it is not a promise that X has taken enforcement action.
Profiles
Open the profile before starting the report so you can identify the account accurately. The profile-report flow can request additional posts. Include the posts that best demonstrate the conduct, especially when one isolated item does not explain why the account itself presents a problem.
Direct Messages
Report the specific Direct Message or conversation from the conversation’s more menu. Reported Direct Messages and conversations disappear from your inbox and cannot be recovered, so preserve any information you are legally allowed to retain before submitting if you may need it for a later explanation or official report.

For content that is illegal under EU or member-state law, use X’s dedicated Report Illegal Content in the EU form. The form is intended to let X evaluate the legal basis, not merely the offensiveness or rule violation.

Information the EU form requires
- Content URL: the direct address of the post, profile, List, or other item at issue.
- Country or law: identify the EU member state and the relevant legal framework.
- Legal reason: explain which conduct is unlawful and why the material falls within that rule.
- Supporting details: provide concrete facts that help reviewers locate and understand the violation.
Keep the explanation specific. A reviewer should be able to tell what happened, where it appears, which law you rely on, and what part of the content establishes the violation. If X needs more information, it may request it during the review.
When an authority or Trusted Flagger should use another channel
Trusted Flaggers have a dedicated route rather than the ordinary public workflow. National judicial or administrative authorities should use X’s legal-request channel. X describes its law-enforcement and government intake channel as the most expeditious route for official requests because it is designed for those users and the legal context they provide.
Report illegal and regulated activity
X’s illegal-and-regulated policy covers conduct such as human trafficking, drugs, weapons, and sales involving endangered species. Anyone can use the Illegal and Regulated report form. Describe the activity, identify the relevant content or account, and include the facts that make the conduct illegal or regulated.

X may ask for more information. It may also ask that a law-enforcement agency contact X when official context is needed. That request does not mean your initial report was ignored; it means the case may require authority-specific information that an ordinary user cannot provide.

What to save immediately after submitting
Keep the confirmation
X says a properly submitted report is routed to the appropriate team and that you are notified of the outcome once the team has enough information. Save the submission confirmation, including the email account or X account associated with the report. It is the most useful reference if you need to identify the case in later correspondence.
Expect an acknowledgement within 24 hours
X states: X acknowledges properly submitted reports within twenty-four hours.
This is an acknowledgement of receipt, not a promise that the content will be removed or an account suspended.
Understand the normal review window

The 24-hour and “few days” statements are X’s stated service expectations, not guaranteed deadlines for removal. A case that needs additional information or includes an appeal can take as long as 30 days.

Use the associated email and X notifications
- Check the email address connected with the report for X’s acknowledgement and subsequent messages.
- Check notifications in the X account used to submit the report.
- Match each message with the content you reported and the confirmation you saved.
- Read any request for more information and respond with the specific facts requested.
X’s documented tracking method is confirmation followed by email and in-product notifications. X help pages do not describe a public case-number dashboard where you can enter a number and view a live status. If you cannot find a message, check the account’s notification area and the email address used during submission, including its spam or filtered folders.

What the notifications may contain
X may include text from reported posts in follow-up emails and notifications. Profile-report instructions describe an opt-out checkbox for those updates. If seeing the reported text again could be harmful or distressing, use that opt-out option when it is presented.
What a report does—and does not—do
- A report sends the item to an appropriate review team; it does not itself decide that the content is illegal.
- Reporting a post or List does not automatically suspend the account.
- The reported post or List is replaced for the reporter by a notice with an option to view it; that is a viewing change, not confirmation of removal.
- Reported Direct Messages and conversations disappear from the reporter’s inbox and cannot be recovered.
- X may seek further information before it has enough facts to issue an outcome.
These distinctions matter when you are checking the account after submitting. Continued account visibility is not proof that X rejected the report, and the notice shown in place of a post is not proof that enforcement has occurred.

Reply through the email or notification thread associated with the report and answer the requested points directly. For an EU complaint, make sure the response still identifies the content URL, the member state or law, the legal reason, and the supporting facts. For illegal or regulated activity, clarify what happened, when it occurred if that is relevant, and how the content demonstrates the activity.

An ordinary user should not present themselves as an authority or use an official channel intended for government requests.

What to do if X rejects the report or takes the wrong action
EU users: appeal qualifying decisions
For users in the European Union, X provides an internal appeal process when it removes content, restricts visibility, suspends or terminates an account, or restricts monetization and the decision is wrong. Use the appeal option in the decision notification and explain precisely which part of the decision you contest.
EU users may also choose a certified out-of-court dispute-settlement body or seek judicial redress. Those options address qualifying X decisions; they are not a substitute for identifying the illegal content and legal basis in the original report.
When there is no public case dashboard
If you are waiting for a decision, do not interpret the absence of a dashboard entry as a closed case. Follow the email and X notifications linked to the submission. X states that some reviews can take up to 30 days when user input or an appeal is involved.

- Open the exact post, List, profile, or Direct Message.
- Choose the report category that matches the conduct.
- Use the EU illegal-content form when the complaint is based on EU or member-state law.
- For an EU submission, provide the URL, country or law, legal reason, and supporting details.
- For trafficking, drugs, weapons, endangered-species sales, or other regulated conduct, use the Illegal and Regulated form.
- Save the confirmation immediately.
- Monitor the associated email address and X notifications.
- Respond if X requests additional information.
- Remember that a report alone does not guarantee removal or suspension.
- If an EU enforcement decision is wrong, use X’s internal appeal and consider certified out-of-court or judicial redress.
