A report sends content to Meta for review; it does not guarantee deletion. How do I report election misinformation on Facebook?
1. Open the exact item making the claim
Go to the individual Facebook post, Reel, Story, comment, or profile that contains the questionable statement. Read the wording carefully. Identify whether it gives a voting date, polling place, registration rule, eligibility requirement, ballot method, or election result that appears wrong.

If the claim is in a video or image, note the relevant timestamp or wording before you report it. If the item may disappear or change, save the permalink and a screenshot for your own records, including the date and time. Do not edit or annotate the copy in a way that could obscure what was originally published.

2. Open the item’s options menu
Select the options control attached to that item (often shown as three dots) and choose Report, or the equivalent label currently displayed. Facebook’s exact control and wording can differ between the main feed, a group, a Page, a Reel, a Story, and a comment.
3. Select the closest accurate reason
Choose the reason that actually describes the problem. Depending on what Facebook shows, that may refer to false or misleading information, election interference, a safety issue, or another more specific category. Do not select an unrelated reason simply because it is the only way to continue.
For example, an invented election day or wrong polling-place address is a factual voting-information problem. A post telling eligible voters to use a nonexistent procedure may be voter interference. A threat aimed at voters or election workers is a violence or safety concern. The available category is a reporting route, not your personal legal finding that the post is false.
4. Add locating details when Facebook allows it
Write a short, factual explanation. State what the post says, what appears incorrect, and which part could affect voting. If the form provides fields for additional information, include the direct post link, the account or Page name, and any relevant date or location. Avoid insults, speculation about the author, or a long political argument; reviewers first need to find and understand the content.
5. Submit and save the confirmation
Send the report and keep any confirmation screen or reference information that Facebook provides. Reporting the original item is generally more useful than reporting a general profile without identifying the specific claim. If several separate posts repeat the same false instruction, report each material item rather than assuming one report covers every copy.
How do I report a false voting post on Instagram?
1. Open the post, Reel, Story, comment, or profile
Navigate to the exact Instagram content. For a Story, open the frame containing the claim; for a Reel, pause at the relevant statement. Record the account name and the claim’s wording. A profile report may be appropriate when the problem is a pattern across an account, but identify the individual content whenever the form lets you.

Open the item’s options menu and select Report (or the current equivalent). Instagram changes labels and placement across surfaces, so do not rely on a fixed sequence of submenu names. The same report control may be reached differently from a feed post, a comment, a Story, or a profile.

Choose the closest available option for false or misleading information, election interference, a threat, or another accurately described issue. If no option says “election misinformation,” select the truthful category that best captures the conduct shown. A wrong voting location is different from a threat of violence, and neither should be reported as spam merely to obtain a review.
4. Supply the identifiers Instagram requests
Instagram’s published guidance specifically asks reporters to provide information such as links, usernames, and descriptions when the form permits. Paste the direct link to the post or profile, spell the username exactly, and describe the false voting instruction in one or two sentences. Explain why the statement matters without asserting facts you have not checked.
5. Submit the report
After submission, note any confirmation that appears. Do not assume that the account will be removed or that the poster will be told who reported it. The available material does not establish universal reporter anonymity or a detailed, current Instagram appeal timeline.

- Provide the locator: include the direct link and username when the form allows it.
- Keep the tone neutral: report the content, not your assumptions about the creator’s motives.
For example: “This Reel says voters in County X must vote on Tuesday at the county courthouse. The county election office lists Wednesday as the early-voting date and gives different locations. Link: [the direct link].” Do not include bracketed placeholders in a real submission; replace them with the actual link.

Which election claims fall within Meta’s stated policies?
Meta’s election guidance identifies several policy areas on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads:
- Inaccurate information about when, where, or how to vote. Examples include a false election date, an incorrect polling place, a made-up registration deadline, or an instruction to use an invalid voting method.
- Voter interference. This covers content that attempts to prevent, intimidate, misdirect, or otherwise interfere with people’s ability to participate.
- Electoral violence. Threats or calls for violence connected with an election may fall under this policy area.
In its 2026 US midterm election guidance, Meta states: On Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, we enforce our policies against voter interference, electoral violence and inaccurate information about when, where, and how to vote in an election.
Its 2025 Canada election guidance uses the same policy focus and refers to “misinformation” about when, where, and how to vote. Those statements describe the areas Meta says it enforces; they do not mean every disputed political opinion violates a removal rule.
Does reporting guarantee that a post will be removed?
No. A report brings content to Meta’s attention. Meta says it takes action when material violates an applicable policy or standard, but an inaccurate, offensive, or disputed political statement may not meet a rule requiring removal. The platform may leave an item up, apply another measure, or determine that the report does not establish a violation.

Check the Support Inbox
Facebook says it sends a notification to the Support Inbox after a report. Open the Support Inbox from your account’s help or menu area to see the report status and decision. The exact navigation can change, so search the account menu for “Support Inbox” if it is not immediately visible.
Request another review when offered
If Facebook decides that the reported content does not violate its standards, it usually offers an option to request another review. This opportunity is not available for every content type. Facebook’s help material says a requested second review is usually completed within 24 hours after the request is made; that is a typical timeframe, not a guarantee.

Understand what the notification does not tell you
A status decision concerns the item and the policy applied. It does not establish that the underlying election claim is correct, and a decision to leave a post up is not an endorsement of its accuracy. Continue to rely on the responsible election authority for voting logistics.
What happens after I report a post on Instagram?
The available official guidance confirms the reporting mechanism and the value of supplying links, usernames, and descriptions, but it does not document a comparable, universal Instagram status-and-appeal workflow or a guaranteed response time. You may receive an in-app notice, but do not promise yourself or another reporter a particular follow-up schedule.

How to handle different types of election content
Posts and Reels
Report the individual post or Reel containing the claim. Include the caption and, for a video, the words spoken or the point in the video where the instruction appears. If the same claim is reposted by several accounts, each copy has its own locator and may need its own report.
Stories
Stories can expire or be deleted before a review occurs. Capture the account name, the Story frame, and its wording for your records, then report it while it is available. Do not treat a screenshot alone as a substitute for using the in-app report control.

Use the comment’s own options menu so the reviewer can see the exact statement and its surrounding context. A comment giving a false polling address may need a different category from a threatening comment, even when both appear under the same post.

Accounts and Pages
If an account repeatedly publishes the same false voting directions, report representative posts and, when offered, the account-level behavior. Explain the pattern without claiming that every post is unlawful or intentionally deceptive. A profile report should not replace reporting the specific item that could mislead voters.
Verify the voting fact outside the platform
For the correct election date, polling place, registration requirement, eligibility rule, ballot-return method, or certified result, contact the responsible state or local election authority. Use the official election office for the relevant jurisdiction, because voting rules are geographic and can differ within one country or state.
Meta says it surfaces official election information and, in some contexts, provides links or alerts from state and local election officials. Those features can help, but their availability and presentation vary. A platform report cannot correct your registration, tell you where your ballot must be returned, or replace confirmation from the authority running the election.
- Write down the exact claim and jurisdiction named in the post.
- Check the official state or local election office for that jurisdiction.
- Compare the date, address, eligibility rule, or method line by line.

Meta’s 2026 materials include company-reported scale figures: more than USD 30 billion spent on safety and security over the preceding decade, more than 200 coordinated inauthentic-behavior networks removed since 2017, and more than 1 billion notifications sent through Facebook Voting Alerts by state and local election officials.
