If a fake account is pretending to be you or a synthetic video, image, or voice falsely depicts you, preserve the evidence first, then report the exact account or post through the platform’s native reporting flow. Select impersonation for a fake account, deepfake, manipulated media, or misinformation for synthetic content, and a privacy or non-consensual-likeness route when your face, voice, or personal information is used without permission. Explain the deception and concrete harm, save the case number, and use the platform’s appeal or privacy process if the first report is rejected.
Do these things before you report
Content can disappear, change, or move while a platform reviews it. Preserve a complete record before clicking Report. Keep the original files and metadata whenever possible rather than relying only on a screenshot.
- Copy the profile, channel, conversation, and individual post URLs.
- Record the username, display name, account ID if visible, and the date and time with your time zone.
- Take screenshots that show the account name, post text, media, comments, and any warning or context around the content.
- Download the image, video, or audio in its original available quality. Keep an untouched copy separately from any cropped or annotated version.
- Save direct messages, payment requests, phone numbers, email addresses, wallet addresses, and instructions to contact or pay someone.
- Write down the exact false statement and what a reasonable viewer could be led to believe.
Do not edit the only copy, confront the operator in a way that could cause evidence to be deleted, or publish private information about the suspected operator. If the account is trying to take over your account, secure your email and social accounts immediately with a new password and multifactor authentication, independently of the report.

A single incident can involve both an impersonating account and a deepfake post. Report each object separately when the platform offers separate routes.

Use the platform’s own form rather than a general comment or a message to another user. A report about a profile may not cause the service to review every post on that profile, and a report about one post may not remove the account.
How to report on each major platform
X
A person or an authorized representative can file an impersonation report through the X Help Center. A bystander can report the account directly from its profile. X states that you do not need an X account to report impersonation on X. The platform says a valid report can result in suspension or a requirement that the profile be changed.
For a fake profile, open the profile’s reporting controls and choose the impersonation option. For synthetic or altered posts, use the report category that addresses deceptive impersonation or misleading manipulated media. Include both the profile URL and the specific post URL when they are available. X’s authenticity rules prohibit deceptive impersonation and misleading synthetic or manipulated media.

If you are reporting for someone else, explain your relationship and authorization. If you are the target, say plainly which identity is being copied and whether the account is making claims, soliciting money, or contacting your audience.
YouTube
YouTube prohibits unauthorized impersonation that may mislead viewers, including AI copies of a person’s voice or likeness. Report the channel through YouTube’s reporting tools when the channel itself is presenting as the person or organization. Also report individual videos when a particular upload is the harmful object.
If a video uses your personal information, face, or voice without consent, YouTube provides a separate removal-request route under its privacy guidelines. Use that route in addition to an ordinary policy report when the central harm is non-consensual use of your identity. Explain exactly where your likeness or voice appears and why viewers could connect it to you.
YouTube considers context, including parody and satire, when evaluating removal. Do not describe a clearly labeled parody as a factual impersonation unless the surrounding presentation is actually misleading. Preserve the title, channel name, video URL, upload date, and the relevant time stamps before submitting.
TikTok
Reporting an impersonating account
- Open the account’s profile.
- Choose Share.
- Select Report, then Report account.
- Choose Pretending to Be Someone.
- Select Me or Celebrity, whichever applies, and complete the requested explanation.
TikTok’s online US impersonation form may require valid identification. The non-US form uses the path Report a potential violation, Account violation, and Impersonation. Submit only accurate information and provide identification through the official form, not in a public comment or direct message.

Reporting an AI deepfake post
- Open the video or post and choose Report.
- Select Misinformation.
- Choose Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media.
- Describe the false claim, the altered elements, and whether the depicted person consented.
TikTok says this category includes AI impersonation and non-consensual use of the likeness of private adults or minors. If both the account and the post are abusive, report both rather than assuming one report covers the other.

Snapchat recommends its in-app reporting flow for abuse, illegal content, and other violations. Capture the exact Snap, Story, account, or chat before submitting because ephemeral content may no longer be visible during review. Record the sender, recipient, time, and any linked account or payment request.
Snapchat’s support guidance also describes routes for non-consensual intimate imagery and notes that some jurisdictions impose specific reporting obligations. Use the intimate-imagery route when that is the harm, and follow any local instructions shown in the reporting process. If a threat, extortion attempt, or immediate safety risk is involved, preserve the messages and contact the appropriate local authority as well as Snapchat.
Facebook and Messenger
Messenger has a direct route for a conversation in which someone is pretending to be another person:
- Open the conversation.
- Choose Privacy & support.
- Select Report.
- Choose Pretending to be someone.
Report the message thread and the sender’s profile when both contain evidence. Include the exact messages, payment requests, and profile URL in your notes.

For Facebook profile impersonation, use the Facebook Help Center’s impersonation process. If the account is also publishing an altered video or image, report that individual post under the closest manipulated-media, privacy, or misinformation category available in the current interface. Menu names can change by account type and region, so read the confirmation screen carefully and save it.
The reviewed guidance does not establish a single stable, dedicated Instagram deepfake menu. Use the current in-app Report action on the profile or post, then search the Help Center for the applicable impersonation, privacy, or manipulated-media process. Report the profile and the specific post separately when both are present.
For a fake account, identify the real person and explain that the account is presenting itself as that person. For an altered post, state what was generated or changed and whether the depicted person consented. Keep screenshots of the selected category and the resulting confirmation because the labels may vary between the mobile app, web interface, country, and account type.
Optional protection for Facebook and Instagram creators
Meta Verified for creators on Facebook and Instagram is a paid subscription that Meta says includes impersonation protection and enhanced support. Availability, eligibility, and pricing can change. Treat it as an optional account-protection service, not as a replacement for reporting a specific fake profile, post, or message.

Write a report that a reviewer can act on
Short, factual descriptions are easier to evaluate than a long account of every upsetting detail. Put the most verifiable facts first:

- Identify yourself or your authority. Say whether you are the person depicted, an authorized representative, or a witness.
- Name the copied identity. Give the real person’s public name and the URL of the legitimate account, if relevant.
- Describe the alteration or false attribution. Specify whether the face, voice, body, words, background, or account details were generated or changed.
- State consent clearly. Say whether you authorized the use, and identify any part that was authorized separately from the disputed material.
- Describe concrete harm. Mention fraud, harassment, threats, doxxing, reputational damage, employment consequences, account takeover, or non-consensual sexual content.
- Point to the evidence. List the profile URL, post URL, message date, time zone, and the exact sentence or time stamp containing the deception.
- Ask for the appropriate action. Request removal, account review, privacy removal, or preservation of related evidence, depending on the platform’s form.
A useful description can be as direct as: “I am the person shown and I did not authorize this account or synthetic recording. It presents a generated voice as my statement and asks viewers to send money. The profile URL, post URL, screenshots, and messages are included.” Adjust the wording to the facts; do not claim something is AI-generated if you only know that it is false or manipulated.

“Not stated” means the reviewed platform instructions did not publish a comparable requirement or route. It does not mean that a platform can never request additional information.
If the platform rejects the report
A rejection may mean that the wrong object or category was submitted, that the reviewer lacked enough context, or that the platform’s policy does not cover the material in the way you described. Do not respond by filing dozens of duplicate reports or by knowingly overstating the facts.
- Read the decision and identify whether it concerns the account, the individual post, or the privacy claim.
- Use the platform’s appeal option if one is shown. Re-submit the relevant URL and add the missing facts rather than repeating the original text.
- If the content uses your face, voice, or personal information without consent, try the platform’s privacy or identity-verification route even if a general deepfake report was rejected.
- For an account impersonation decision, use the platform’s identity or impersonation form and explain your authority to act.
- Save the decision, case number, dates, and screenshots of the appeal. Keep the original media and metadata unchanged.
Platforms do not publish one comparable response-time figure for these reports. A lack of an immediate reply is not proof that the report was ignored, so preserve the confirmation and continue using the documented appeal or privacy channel.
When to escalate beyond the platform
Platform moderation cannot recover money, reverse an account transfer, or guarantee that copies elsewhere will disappear. Consider contacting the relevant local authority or a qualified lawyer when the incident includes:
- Money transfers, investment or payment fraud, or requests for account credentials.
- Threats of violence, stalking, blackmail, or extortion.
- Unauthorized access to an email, financial, or social account.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery, especially involving a minor.
- Serious employment, professional, immigration, or reputational harm.
There is no single worldwide law-enforcement route for every deepfake. The correct authority depends on your jurisdiction and the type of harm. Preserve payment instructions, message headers, dates, time zones, URLs, and original files so an authority or lawyer can assess the incident without relying on a reposted screenshot.
